Chapter 125
Monday morning had arrived, and after two days of visitors and screaming babies, it was nice to get out of the house. I loved the twins, as much as I loved my own girls, but handing them back was something I was looking forward to doing as a grandparent. Depending on what our plans were, I was thinking in time of perhaps moving them in to their own apartment to give them more space, or having them return to Munich in time.
Maggie for her part was being magnificent. Nothing was a problem, and whilst she was yet to come out to me, she had dropped enough hints indicating that I should know by now. She was due to return to New York tomorrow as she needed to get back in to college, but I also think she was wanting to see Beth. I had laid out some new rules, including her detail being increased to two, with only one visible at any time. This was to give her the same privacy, but more security.
Turning up to the Hyatt, I was ushered straight to the boardroom by Michael, who wasn't yet a fan of me being out in public, despite the increase presence of security. In essence he'd wrapped me in cotton wool, and for now as I was still not strong, I was happy to oblige.
"Johan, Steve, Klaus. Great to see you all," as I walked in with Sam by my side.
"Sorry for all the cloak and dagger, but I think I have a plan that could see us make an older airline, profitable quickly, allowing for fleet renewal and also expansion."
"Would you like to share, or is this a game of guessing" Steven joked from the other side of the table.
"Simple. We buy a bank here"
"I don't understand" Johan said writing down some notes.
"OK, so, the balance sheets show bank fees and costs hitting 9 digits a year. This includes electronic banking on ticket purchases, that is passed on to travellers, but we still pay it. This increases ticket prices, and reduces our competitive edge in the market. Take Sydney to Melbourne, the most popular route in Australia and the third most popular in the world. Average ticket price is $220. We drop to say, $199, plus there is the usual bank fee of $19 dollars, which we aren't paying, we are ahead of our rival, and for them to continue to discount would hurt their margin. Take this across all routes, and we are in front. Then, we have 4.5 million frequent flyer members, and we use that info to promote the bank, with discounted travel, cross promotions, integrated cards etc and I am adding $200,000,000 back on to the bottom line with out even taking in to account the profits from having a bank here that has lower home loan rates, lower credit card rates and all the things that are working in America, and we are way in front. But I was thinking of timing, and I would rather purchase an existing tier two bank than one of the big 4 in Australia, but tackling them head on. We have more money than him, but a buyout of one of those could be financial suicide imposed by the other 3"
There was silence in the room as the three brains trust digested everything I had said. It was a lot to take in, and my figures were only rough, but in my gut it would work.
"So essentially you want to buy a bank to stump up an airline, that is making a small profit, to reduce fares and to grow that business whilst making profits off the bank as well, allowing us to grow capital in a market and build what is a domestic carrier into an international carrier."
Johan was trying to summarise what I had said by way of putting it into his own words.
"Basically, yes"
"I love it. It is brilliant. I really think this plan could work. Klaus, there would be considerable input by you and your team around the digital cross over, We'd need someone we trust here on the ground, but I think it would work. Steven. Your thoughts?"
"Well, I must say, how in the world did my little brother ever come up with such a brilliant idea"
Steven's comment really hit home. Deep down, we may not be blood, but to me he was the only one that ever treated me like family. His comment meant a lot to me.
"And with your approval, I would like to stay here for at least the first 12 months and get it up and running with your support. I know time differences and distance is a big issue, but we already run Munich IT 24/7, we have people around the globe. We pick a top team from America and Germany and have them work with me."
"I don't know about you Steven, but I am happy to sound this out." Johan said looking very intrigued by my idea.
"What you're saying" Steven added is, "You more or less asked out here to scope out a bank to buy, not knowing whether one for sale or not"
"Basically" I replied.
"Smart move champ. I am impressed"
We spend the next four hours strategizing on a range of issues, but by then I was too tired to keep going on and signalled Michael to bring the car around. As I was leaving Steven came up to me.
"I was going to visit dad this weekend. Did you want to come"
I stopped and looked at him. I could see the answer he was hoping for.
"Steven, the pain in my life caused by both them, I have had to shut out. You have given me hope in life that the Smith clan is not that bad. But unfortunately, I can't go with you. I just don't have the strength for it. Maybe one day, maybe one day when I can forgive, but today is not that day"
I could not have been anymore raw or honest with him. It wasn't the answer he wanted, but it was the only one I could give. I knew he was due to turn 85 soon. And if he passed without me making peace, it was something I was willing to live with.
Driving across the cross city tunnel the lights overhead took my attention, and allowed me the opportunity to reflect back on my life, and what I had become, more so in the past 15 months. Who would I be if I had been raised a Von Garbner, would I be a bastard tycoon that so many people think I am, or would I be guided by the same moral compass I carry today. It was a big hypothetical and one I couldn't answer. I think I would have been harder than I am today, but I probably wouldn't have had true love, nor two wonderful kids I had been blessed with.
I was bought back to reality as we exited the tunnel near Kings Cross. In the distance there was the familiar sign of the BMW Sydney dealership I had driven past daily on my commute to my old office. "Michael, let's call in. I want to look at some cars" I instructed
"Are you sure you are up to"
"Yes mum. We won't stay long I promise"
"Drop the attitude, bitch" Came his friendly response.
As we pulled up, I hopped out unassisted and walked towards the door. As tired as I was I loved looking at cars. Especially when I had the money.
"Tim, wonderful to see you. Sorry we are here earlier than we mentioned, but I was just driving past, and thought I would browse."
"Wonderful to see you. Glad you are back on your feet."
"Lets not get too carried away. I'm getting there"
"Can I get you a water or something sir."
Tim, please, you have to stop calling me Sir. It is Grant. And I would love a coffee. A real one. The shit they served me at the Hyatt was almost instant coffee in taste"
"Certainly" he said as he signalled an associate to grab both Michael and I a coffee.
"Would can I do for you today then"
"First up, I have done the research on the i7 and I am interested in the one coming this week. We are planning on staying in Sydney for an extended stay and will need more than just the car I have at the moment. What colour is the one you have coming."
"It's a burgundy, beige Nappa Leather interior, Executive seating, Massage rear seats, TV's, full optioned. "
"Ok, we will take that. I will also like two 2 series sedans for staff use. An 8 series convertible, which I know Jackson will love."
"I have a blue and white 2 series in stock, and a navy blue 8 in stock. Sorry I am limited but supply is truly dreadful at the moment." He apologised as I made my shopping list sound like a trip to Walmart.
"And something sporty. Roomy. Powerful. Something that screams Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and makes plenty of noise." I said jokingly
"Actually Grant, I may have just car." He said guiding Michael and I across the showroom floor.
"2023 BMW M5 8 Cyl, full of grunt and life."
Before I could say anything, Michael piped up and commented.
"They are fully sick Boss. My dream car. Just look at it. It's a beast"
Laughing I turned to Tim and nodded. "We will have this one too, but this one goes in his name." Pointing my stare in Michael's direction.
"Boss, I can't let you do that. It is too expensive."
"Michael. Remember the talk we had about family. Well, this is one of those family moments"
His face lit up as he buzzed around to the driver's seat and jumped in the $250,000 car.
We had spent close to a million dollars on the 5 cars. It felt good. It was wealth at its finest and it was obnoxious. But I really didn't care. I wanted to, and that was the only justification I needed to give.
Signing a heap of paperwork, we left the dealership after an hour or so. I needed a nap but I was happy with my day
Chapter 126
I was happy with how I had thought out my plan. Whilst there were a lot of hiccups that we would encounter, the biggest one finding a bank we could buy, getting approval from regulators, it was all a forward rolling motion that had been set in place.
Jackson returned from lunch with some friends, and as he walked in I was sitting out on the veranda having a vodka taking in the sight.
"You look well" he commented on my appearance.
"I feel well. Besides the breathing issue, I actually feel good for the first time in a few weeks"
"That's good. How did your meeting go"
"I wanted to talk to you about that."
"Remember how we spoke on the boat about me stepping back."
"Yes, and you promised me you were ok with that. Let me guess, you've changed your mind" he said as his voice raised with impatience.
"Well yes and no. Grab a drink and let me explain." I could see he was not too happy but as he returned with a beer he sat next to me, arms crossed
"OK, I'm waiting."
"Well, ............." As I went through the plan from top to bottom, not leaving anything out. I owed him the truth, and I was going to be 100% so there were no hidden surprises.
"OK, I am not completely against it. It is not as bad as I thought, and we get to stay here for at least a year"
"Minus some obligations we have overseas, but yes"
"What am I going to do all day?"
"That's up to you. Whatever you want. Talk with Cath, look at opportunities, where we can make a difference, maybe attach yourself to some organisations that match with you. There is plenty of options. But remember, you still have your quarterly obligations in Munich which you need to keep"
"That sounds fair. But what about the boys, will they stay? The girls? What about them. The twins?"
"You are over thinking it. The boys stay with us, where ever we are. Maggie wont leave New York, and I am pretty sure that Jules and Marcus will want to return to Munich soon as Jules wants to continue working. We are slowly becoming empty nesters."
"I kind of like just you and I being alone. It's been a long time coming. So I guess it is a yes from me"
"Good. I was hoping you would say that, as I was prepared to step away if that was what you wanted."
"You are so full of shit" he laughed before adding. "There was no way you would have stepped away. This is your baby, and in a way your dream"
"True, but in perspective, you are far more important."
He grabbed me by the hand and squeezed it for reassurance
"So I guess that you now agree, I can take back the bribe I just bought you then"
"What. What have you done"
"Not telling, but you will see tomorrow" I laughed at him.
"You seriously spoil me too much"
It was true, but I was also making all his dreams come true that he had mentioned in the years before we have this wealth. We had travelled, we had a holiday home, he didn't have to work, he wanted a sports car. All of these things that he had said, "I wish we had the money for" There were still a few more things on the list, but in time he would have it all. That was I wanted for him.
Jules came down with Max in her arms and stood at the door. "I am not coming out in the sun, he's too young" she said.
"Well best I come in and give him cuddles" I responded as Jackson helped me up. Sitting in a chair she passed the newest addition to me who was half asleep, struggling to keep his eyes open.
"Poppy loves you, as does grandpa" I whispered in the babies ear.
"How are you doing sweetheart"
"Not too bad. I think Marcus is worse. I have to drag him to bed because he hates leaving them alone"
We laughed as one as she said this.
"Where is the man in question"
"Asleep on the bed with Jack. They were too cute to wake. We are going to see the Sydney Rabbi with his parents this afternoon. We were invited for dinner, but I asked if could be afternoon tea, as I don't want them out of their routine yet"
"Just do what you need to, and yell if you need support. Any plans on when you will be heading back"
"We were thinking next week. We were going to head to New York first and see Marcus' extended family, before Germany. I do want to get back to work. I love being a mother, but I don't think I can do it 24/7"
"Don't feel bad sweetheart, do what is right for you and the boys. Please let Sam know and he can organise the plane to take you. I need you safe and protected at all times."
Marcus soon came down holding Jack. "the little fella needs a feed. He wont keep still." He said as he handled him over to Jules. You could see the love that he held for his family in his eyes. It was there in everything that he did. To see it first hand was amazing, and I knew Jules was the same and I was happy she had found her mate.
"Are you ok if I go for a run? It has been a while"
"That's fine but remember, we have to go out soon"
As Marcus ran upstairs to change, Jules smiled. As he reappeared in his running kit, he kissed Jules. "Take care of my little family. I love you" as he bolted out the door.
Whilst Jules fed the twins, Jackson and I played dotting grandparents in holding the other. Having this time, uninterrupted, was what family was all about. Watching Jules being a mother was also a beautiful sight.
Maggie walked in at this time, with a bag. "Well guys, I guess I am out of here" she stated with her hands on her hips.
"Do you really have to go" I asked not wanting my baby to leave.
"Yes dad, I do. I have college to get back to. You're fine, and this one has her boobs out too much" pointing at Jules as she laughed.
"Rumour has it you like boobs"
The silence that spilt out across the room was deafening.
As Maggie looked at Jackson, and I looked at Maggie, she raised her hands in disbelief.
"What you thought I wouldn't tell him" Jackson said breaking the silence.
"What's this Jules" added.
"OK, I'm gay. So what, so are you two"
"There is nothing wrong with it. I'm just surprised that you didn't feel like you could tell me. Both of you girls need to understand. We are both here, always, no matter what it is"
"I know. I guess I was just struggling with it myself at first"
"Fair enough. Now, when you get back to New York, remember the new rules. And it is only until we find out who is behind everything. It is not a long term solution"
"Yes dad, I know. You have told me 20 times already, now give me these little munchkins so I can give them a hug and squeeze before I go."
As she grabbed Max, Jules reminded her that she would see her next week in New York.
"I know, and I look forward to it. We can take them shopping"
"We will see." Jules being the protective mother said.
As Maggie hugged me and moved on to Jackson, It was a strange feeling, knowing how we lived in each other's pockets for so long, but were now all stretched around the world on different continents.
"Before you go, I want to let you both know, that we have decided to stay here for the next year. You will see us overseas on business trip and such, but for us, this will be home and you will always have a place here."
"Aww the empty nesters are retiring" Maggie through in before Jackson gave her a playful swat on her bum.
"Get out of here trouble, and remember to call us daily. We will miss you so much" he said as he grabbed her from behind in a bear hug.
"Love you dada" She smiled.
"Michael, can you please take Maggie to the airport. I would rather you drove her than the driver."
`OK Boss. If I am not back in an hour, I have either driven on the wrong side of the road, or been arrested for road rage. These Sydney drivers are lunatics"
"Seriously dad, you are letting him drive after saying that. Come on big bro. Let's get moving." She said as she yelled out for Sally that they were leaving.
As quiet descended back over the house, Jules and Jackson took the twins up to bed. It was nice. It was not often it was the quiet, and as Karl walked in I patted the seat next to me.
"Pull a seat" I gestured
"How you feeling" he asked as he sat
"I'm OK, but I think I can't say the same about you. What's eating you away"
"Nothing really."
Nothing? Really? You wouldn't be looking like a cat with a smacked arse if it were nothing. Now spill the beans kiddo"
"On one condition. You are not to mention it to Jackson"
"Trouble in paradise?
"No, not between us, our bond in stronger than ever. But, I have some concerns"
"Well spill it and let us get it out there. There is no need to carry it around"
"Hmm" he sounded as I could tell he was processing it
"Every night, about an hour after we go to bed, Michael wakes up screaming and lashing out. He brakes out in sweat, and a few times he has inadvertedly struck me. He is in a cold sweat, it is like he still asleep, and as I try to talk to him he doesn't respond and just goes back to sleep."
As he said this he lifted his shirt to show me a massively large amount of bruising on his abdomen.
"Fuck Karl. Why haven't you said something earlier. This isn't right."
"I didn't want to get him trouble. It's like he is doing it in his sleep, and half hour later he is cuddling into me and I am laying there petrified."
"You know I can't let this go unsaid. I have to do something. I might phone Cath first and seek her advice"
"Would you please. I will do whatever I can to help, but I am not sleeping, and he shrugs it off in the morning"
"Leave it with me. No promises. But leave it with me."
As we were finishing up James joined me for a drink. He had been working around the clock, and we'd had little change to be social, just our daily catch ups and run of the mill things.
"Karl, can you please let cook know there will be 8 of us for dinner." I said as he started to walk away.
"What's knew old timer" I asked casually.
"I think we have found our problem. Again, I only tell you what you need to know, and the source is very credible. I just need your permission to use the discretionary fund for a large withdrawal."
"Yes, that's fine, and I don't think I want to know."
"You don't. But once this is done, our lives will be easier. I may even get a holiday"
I always felt uneasy around these conversations, but I trusted James to make the right decisions in these matters. It was never an easy `yes' from me, but I did so on the best possible advice.
"I need to return to Germany tomorrow though. I have had Sam book me a flight. I need to be on the ground close when this goes down."
"I understand. I don't really need Sam here for a while, at least a month, so he can go with you, if he wants."
"Once this goes down, I will be leaving Germany ASAP. So, I would rather he didn't"
"James, please tell me you are not doing it yourself"
"No, but it is just safer in the fallout."
"OK, why doesn't Sam fly to the house in the Cayman's and you can join him there afterwards?" I thought out loud. "You could both use a break. Between Chris and Michael, they can hold the fort down"
"If you are happy with those arrangements, I will put them in place."
"I wouldn't have suggested it if I wasn't. But I do have some concerns regarding Michael"
"Oh, what are they"
As I explained Karl's re-enactment of what was happening nightly James thought it might be some sort of PTSD. He was reluctant to place Michael in any form of leadership position whilst he was like this. I knew this would be upsetting, but it was James' call, and I couldn't over ride it.
I Suggested that I talk to him first. I was planning on talking to Cath too, but at the end of the day it was Michaels welfare that concerned me more than anything.
"Smart move, I will leave that in your hands"
"Best I call her then"
Chapter 126
Picking up the phone it was good to hear Cath's voice. We chatted about the work she was doing, and how much joy she was getting out of establishing the platform they would use to move forward.
"I am also guessing this isn't just a social call" she added as she finished speaking.
"Not entirely. We have a small issue I need advice on."
I went on to explain the actions of Michael. She did agree that it would possibly be a type of PTSD, but it may be something else."
She offered to come out, but I suggested not yet. I needed to dig a little further and I would keep her posted.
We agreed I would call tomorrow after I had had a chance to talk with Michael. I needed some understanding from him, and I needed to get my head around it too.
"Don't push him too hard. He needs to open up to you."
"Thanks for the advice. I will talk tomorrow"
Just as I ended the call, Michael arrived back from the airport.
"Perfect timing. You got a few minutes for a chat." I asked as he walked in
"Always, what do you need"
"Help me up, let's go somewhere private for a chat"
We walked into one of the large sitting rooms which overlooked the gardens. I knew we would not be disturbed in here as I shut the door behind us.
"We need to have a chat about you" I started as I could see his eyes narrow and his defences kick in. It was Michaels least favourite subject, and it was my first words that caused him to stand.
"Sit down, listen to me. Karl came and spoke to me"
"He had no fucking right"
"Michael, listen to me. I am not angry. I am worried. I am worried about you. Drop the bravado bullshit and listen"
As he turned sullen he sat and grabbed a cushion which he hugged as I spoke.
"We need to stop these outburst and I need to make sure you are all right. That is what I am trying to do. We love you more than anything, but, this needs to stop, and we need to work through it together if need be"
"It will stop, I promise"
"And how will you stop it, superman"
"I don't know. It just will. It comes and goes"
"But wouldn't you like to stop it for ever"
"It never will. It will always stay"
"Is it about your family?"
"Yeah, every night I close my eyes I picture it. Every time I am alone I just want to end my life because I miss them so much"
His tears were falling freely down his face as he spoke. He needed to let it out. Cath knew this would come, but she wasn't sure when. It appeared the dam wall had finally broken as he went on about his pain.
I stood up and sat next to him as he turned and placed his head on my shoulder. "It is ok. Let it all out. You need to. Not all superhero's wear capes" I added stealing a line I knew.
"But I hurt Karl, and I am struggling to live with myself over it. I didn't mean to, but it just happens and I am asleep, and I don't know I have done it"
"It's called night terrors and it is ok. But, I am going to suggest until we get it under control you maybe should sleep in separate beds."
He nodded in agreement, and I could tell he wanted to fix this. I knew he loved Karl. I knew he would go to the ends of the earth to fix this.
"When was the last time you went to LA."
"I never went back afterwards." He said as he pulled out his wallet and removed a key tucked inside it.
"I pay the taxes, I pay for the upkeep, but it sits there empty"
"Maybe you need closure. Maybe you need to go and lock the door one last time and walk away. Do you think that would help. I know you are trying to hold on, but is that holding you back?"
"I just don't know. I just don't know what to think anymore."
"You have carried this on your shoulders for far too long. Time to let it go, I think. How about we talk to Cath together tomorrow and see what she thinks"
"I'd like that" He said as his eyes started to dry up.
"Now, I want you to go wash your face, and then if you are up to it, join us with Karl for dinner."
"OK."
He was like a child sometimes. A big lost one that needed some help and guidance. But when I need him to be my protector, he was always right on his game. He carried a lot of hurt, and I needed to help him lighten the load.
I wandered around and found Jackson. I needed to ask him permission to do something. It was something that might help Michael.
Again I went through the process of explaining what was happening with Michael, and as I expected Jackson had cause for concern.
"So, what are you thinking." He asked
"I was thinking of lying to LA with him. Just me and him, no add on's, on the quiet, and just helping him say good bye. I think he needs closure"
"How long would you be gone."
"Probably a week max. The guy has never been back. He holds his house key in his wallet. It is really sad actually, and, he has become a part of us. I treat him the same way I treat the girls at times."
"I agree. I just don't want you over doing it. That's all"
"If I didn't think I was up to it. I wouldn't"
"I was thinking of flying commercial over, then the plane can swing back through LA and collect us on the way back from taking Jules to Munich. How does that sound"
"That should work. I will ask, but I think I know the answer, but did you want Karl and I to come with you"
"I thought about that. And I was ready to say yes. But after reflecting, I think it might be a case of the less the better."
"That's fine. I am sure we can get up to our own trouble here all by ourselves. Oh, by the way. There was something I wanted to talk to you about too"
"Yeah, what's wrong bub"
"Nothing is wrong, but the property next door is being listed for sale. It is nothing like this. 1960's brick number 4 bedrooms. Needs to be bulldozed really. But it is very liveable"
"What's your thoughts?"
"Buying it. Moving some staff in there. Maybe Security, Michelle, cook etc. I'd keep Michael. Karl here, but I think reducing the people in here would be nice. It's a massive home, but at times it feels like a hotel."
"I'm ok with that. Would you like to do it as a project? Maybe a gut and redo, or just a makeover? Perhaps extend the fencing from here to encompass that place as well. Make it a little compound like we have in Germany, but on a much smaller scale?"
"Oh, I could buy up the whole neighbourhood." He laughed.
"Honey, with the prices of Sydney real estate, that is a bit too fanciful"
"I'll call the agent tomorrow and see what we can do. I think they are hoping for about $4-5m, which isn't bad for this area. It is basically land value"
"Agreed. If you can make it happen, just put it in your name. That way it will be the same as this place."
"What do you mean."
"I put this place under your name. Technically it's our cause of our marriage, and the law here, but it is in your name only"
"Why do you not tell me these things"
"Would it make a difference"
"No, I guess not"
"Well there you have it then."
Jackson always thought of the practical. And whilst purchasing the house next door was excessive, in our lives and everyday world, it was practical to have our full-time staff living next door. It would return some privacy to us, and it would return to us some peace. The coming and going of people at the moment was intrusive on our everyday. All the bedrooms here were full. It was like a small hotel with feeding times. It would be nice to have our lives back.
That night James & Sam, Jackson & I, Karl & Michael, Marcus & Jules, and as a last-minute thought, Chris & Michelle, all joined to us for a semi farewell dinner. I also wanted to talk to our key people about of plans. It affected all of the people at this table and they all needed the option to stay or go.
"Guys, I have asked you all to join us tonight as over the next few days, half of you will be off and away. But before we do, I wanted to discuss our future. Jackson and I have decided that we will be staying in Sydney for at least the next 12 months. I am exploring a few business opportunities here, and we will be opening offices in the coming weeks. But I want to open the table to discussing everyone's thoughts. Let me start by saying no one is out of a job, and we will redeploy if you want. You are all too valuable for us to lose. So, Karl, you're closest. I'll let you start"
"I absolutely love it here. Not only the house, but the relaxed lifestyle here. I'm in"
"Michael?"
"Well it will be a bit hard for me to protect you from Europe" He laughed, knowing he wouldn't be going over.
"Sam & James, you will continue to do as you do. I am happy to find you a house here if you were to relocate. I would hate to lose either of you, but please, consider moving here, at least on a mid-long term"
"I think it will be on our list to discuss when we start holidays next week" James laughed "I will let you know, but it is certainly an option we should explore" Grabbing Sam's hand in the process.
"Chris?"
"Well, I guess I should come clean on something"
This sent the room into silence as no one was sure what he was about to expose. I thought I was going to have a heart attack as I waited. It was then that a smile appeared on his face
"It would all depend on what my fiancé wants to do"
The room was stunned silence and no one knew where this was leading until Michelle piped up and said "Well I think we should stay. This family needs us to put them back together"
As we all realised there were hugs and kisses all round. I, along with the rest of the room did not seeing any of this coming. We were stunned but over joyed.
"Well, fuck me, you kept that well-hidden. I did not see that coming at me." I said
"You are by my side every minute. How did I miss this" Jackson said.
"Well, I don't sleep with you Mr J. I am allowed some privacy. Michelle and I got to know each other when you were sick. We just became close. We decided that, well, we travel well together, we see each other often enough, why not marry as well. We really have so much in common"
"Mich, you are such a minx" Jackson said as he stood between them with his arms draped around them. "I am so happy for you both. Champagne for all" He yelled.
As Karl went to get champagne, it was Chris who grabbed Michael for a quiet word.
"Hey bud. You know you're my best friend, don't you. We have done some crazy shit over the years, all over the place. I love you like a bro. So I was kind of hoping that you would be my best man"
"As if you ever had to ask. If I wasn't, I would have snapped you in two like a twig"
"Yeah yeah, you know I could beat you in a fight"
The two hugged tight, and out of the corner of my eye I could see a tear in Michael's eye. `Bloody softy' I smiled.
"Love you bro"
"Love you too, bro"
Chapter 127
The morning rose, and I was waiting for James to come down and leave. I hugged him tight, and wished him well.
"Call if you get in to any trouble. You don't have to do this"
"We both know I do boss. Plus, it's been a while since I was involved in anything like this. It is what I do. Just take care of Sam"
"I'll take him to the airport myself and make sure he gets to the Cayman's. Take advantage of the place. Treat it as your own"
"Oh, we will. I actually cannot wait to unwind. Just promise me you won't do anything stupid" He laughed as Chris was ready to take him.
Michael was there to say good bye, and my understanding was that James had sat them both down and laid down the law. James had slightly caved and given them both lead roles but if the crunch came and they couldn't agree, it was Chris' call. Afterwards James explained to Michael why, and whilst I know this would have been disappointing for him, he was mature enough to understand.
"let's grab a coffee big boy" I suggested as they left. "Do you ever put a shirt on" I said as I tweaked his nipple.
"Only when I have to. I hate clothes. None ever fit right."
"Well stop being so bloody big then" I joked with him.
As I poured coffee the cook was already in the kitchen.
"Morning my friend, can we please grab some breakfast when you are free."
"Certainly boss. Omelette? Poached Eggs? What do you feel like?"
"I'll let you surprise me, but I am sure this one will demolish an omelette"
"Sure will!"
"Sit, I had a thought I want to discuss in private before everyone gets up"
"Oh God, again"
"Just listen. I was planning on you and I taking a little trip for about a week, and closing some doors for good. A trip to LA. Maybe sell the house, visit your families grave site. Pay your respects, and perhaps once and for all let them go"
I could tell how confronting it was to actually think about doing this. And I could see him churning it through his brain.
"Just you and I. No one else. I call the shots and if I back out you won't nag me?"
"I will push a little, otherwise you will avoid it. But I think its time Mr. I think you owe it to yourself to stop the torment. I have only discussed it with Jackson, and he is fine with it. But I want to do it with you. For you" I said as I reached out for his hand.
"OK, I will do it for you"
"No,
As Michael, I want you to do it for you"
"I'm just scared"
"And that is why I am coming with you."
"OK. I can show you around my old hood. Where I grew up"
"We can do whatever you want"
Thankfully breakfast interrupted us and we could change subject. I didn't need a Michael meltdown this morning. It was going to be a fun day. We were scheduled to collect the new cars today, and that was always fun.
Jackson and others started to circle the kitchen, and I could only agree with Jackson that we needed the house next door to expand and have our team living in there. I missed our privacy in the morning, but as I had everyone gathered around, I told them to be ready with in 30mins to leave.
"Where are we going" Jackson asked with excitement rising in his voice.
"Just wait. God your impatient." I added as he squeezed at my shoulders.
As everyone grabbed coffee's and bits and pieces, I was ready to go.
"Michelle, Chris, Sam. I will need you to follow in the van."
"Ok, I wish I knew where we were going thou" Chris added in.
"Hey bud, it is OK. I have been there, and it is safe. Just chill and enjoy"
As they headed to the garage, I threw the keys to the X7 we had bought for Jules trip over to Chris.
"Next week after they have left. This ones for you"
"I don't understand." Chris said.
"What don't you understand. The fact I am giving you a high performance SUV for your personal use, or do you not know what a car is" I laughed as he was trying to take it all in.
"This is bullshit. Are you serious. This thing flies. It is a beast" I could tell that he was excited by my largesse and wasn't sure what to say.
"It's my way of saying thank you for staying with us. Just enjoy it. You never know, Michelle might want to drive it all the time"
"Hardly" he laughed
As they left, Jackson looked at me across the back seat. "You've bought them all cars haven't you"
"Maybe, maybe not" I replied.
"Cars and planes are your thing. I know you better than you think"
"Whatever" I laughed.
In 20 minutes we were pulling up in the dealership as I hopped out to be greeted by Tim.
"Morning Grant. How are you this morning"
"Great. I assume the transfer went through alright"
"It sure did. Thank you for that"
As we rounded the corner there were 5 cars lined up with big red bow's on them. Ignoring them, I walked inside to the showroom, as everyone followed.
"Coffee?"
"I'd love one, not sure about this motley crew behind me"
"I will" Jackson said as he wandered off to browse.
As Tim returned, he had a pile of keys and paperwork in folders for each vehicle. It was moments later that our coffee was bought over.
"Grant, why is there paperwork? What have you done?" Jackson asked.
"I did a little shopping" I said handing him the keys to his new car. "It's outside. Go figure out which one"
"OMG. I know which one it is" He said as he kissed me and ran off.
"Big Boy, you know which is yours" Enjoy it. Michael smiled as he grabbed Chris. "Come check this out Bro"
As the two walked off, I could hear them competing as to who had the better vehicle. It was like two teenagers fighting over a girl at high school. It was laughable.
"Michelle, I didn't think you'd be a the sports car type, so I went practical for you."
"Grant, seriously. You didn't have to"
"It is a company car. You need one to get around in in your role, and plus, pblic transport isn't very classy"
"Thanks Boss. I really do appreciate it"
Lastly I handed Sam the final key. "This is the staff runabout for shopping etc."
"Cool. You make life so easy. Hopefully James will want to settle here. It is so much better"
He made me smile. He was a good lad that kept me going daily
"Now Grant" Tim started, "Yours is a spectacular vehicle in so many ways. I am a little envious, but I am so glad you are the first in the country to take delivery. Let's go out and explore the vehicle."
Walking around the vehicle it was a spectacular piece of machinery and one I could only ever have dreamt of owning just over a year ago. Opening the drivers door that new car smell was overwhelmingly powerful and the leather seats felt so right wrapped around me. I felt I had truly spoiled myself with this purchase.
I asked Michael if I could drive myself home to have one sample of the technology before me.
"As long as you stay between Chris and I, I don't see a problem with it."
I was like a big kid when it came to these types of things, and even if I got 20 mins to drive myself, it was going to worth it.
As we all hopped into our new purchases, I could see Jackson was in love. He looked damn sexy in his, with the roof down, Ray ban aviators perched on his face. He was a golden god in my eyes.
As Michael moved in behind me, Chris set off in a convoy of cars that we would be taking home.
Having never driven a full electric vehicle before it's silence was a strange sensation. It was like driving with the motor off, and as I drove the road that hugged the harbour, I felt like I was in another world.
The drive was over to soon for me, as we reached home and the familiar garage door slid back. One after one we entered and found our place to park. I knew we would be out and about in them again soon, but for now, I had had my treat, alone in the car driving. My happy place I so desperately missed these days.
As we walked up stairs, Jackson grabbed me.
"Next door will take it off the market for $4.85m"
"And I assume you said yes"
"I thought I should ask you first"
"Bub, you don't have too. We've discussed these things. You can make those decisions and we both agreed it was the right thing to do"
"I still struggle. We have always decided on big purchases together"
"I know. Well, I think you should call him back and say yes. Then you need to find an architect to help you remodel it"
"I know just the person" I gathered he was referring to Kieran. A guy we had played with a few times before who had his own architect firm in the city. He had a good eye for design, and whilst I wasn't going to rebuild the place, I wanted it updated, and preferably expanded to 6 bedrooms, a couple of extra bathrooms, and have our existing boundary wall extended to incorporate next door as well.
I asked Sam to arrange one-way tickets for Michael and I to LA. I wanted to leave in the coming days. Tomorrow, I had a catch up with Johan and Steven & Co to discuss any opportunities they may had discovered, and also an update on the Airline purchase. I was balancing both the personal and the professional side of our lives, and I needed to see some closure on both, soon.
"Boss I can get you on a direct Qantas flight, first class, both of you on Friday, depart 10:30am, arriving the same day 7:30am."
"That's fine. Can you please make sure we are in the double seating area, so we can talk"
"I have already confirmed that is available"
Not that I planned on having sex with Michael at 40,000ft on a commercial flight, but the first class double cabins had a drop down wall between them, which allowed `couples' to dine together, and also have a double bed if they so choose. I was doing it for practical reasons, as I knew Michael would be anxious, and I needed to keep him calm the whole trip. I could have waited till Tuesday and flew with Jules, Marcus, the twins and his parents, but I think Michael would have thrown the Finkelstein's out mid-flight the way they talked non-stop. This way was safer for everyone, I laughed to myself.
Chapter 128
The morning bought with it dark clouds and storms as they rolled in from the west. I hated stormy weather as it always made me feel sleepy.
I had no time to dwell as Jeff, my driver let me know we were ready to leave.
"Come on Romeo, time to hit the road. Long day ahead' I said as we made our way to the garage.
I was excited to get in the new car again, and although I was now relegated to the back seat, she was still extremely comfortable to ride in. I played with all the gadgets in the back. The massage seats, the seat heaters, the TV's, and even a little fridge located between the seats. It was sheer luxury.
"Can you please stop sliding the seat back and forth" Michael said as I continued to bump in to the front with my feet.
"Shut up, it's fun" I joked.
"Whatever boss. You're like a bloody kid"
"Yep, and I am allowed to be"
Peak hour traffic was a shit, as it always is, and as we finally made the 30min trip in just under an hour, I walked straight in to the boardroom and got down to business with the 3 amigo's.
"Fire away, what's news" I started the meeting off with.
"Shall I start by saying it has been an interesting week." Steven started the conversation off with.
"Australia is a different kind of country. Very laid back in terms of urgency" added Johan
"Ah, I see you found out the hard way" I laughed
"Good News and OK news, but no bad news." Steven said turning to the business at hand. "I am pretty sure we can secure the airline, on favourable terms, and at a price better than asking. But, in saying that, we won't know about acquiring a bank for some time. What that means is do we take the gamble and purchase the airline, before we know if we have secured a bank, or wait, and potentially miss out on one or both."
"It's a good point to make. My thoughts are, and if you would allow me some indulgence, I want the airline. The bank sweetens the deal. So, I would like to move forward on the airline, but, and I need to stress, if the dollars don't add up, I am prepared to walk away from it, and continue our search. In saying that, if we do secure the airline, and not the bank, I am sure that with in time we can either find another bank, or, depending on the market at the time, launch our own here"
"I tend to agree with that decision." Johan added. "The airline, even at asking is a good buy. If we can secure it around $4.5-$5 billion, it would make an even better proposition. All agreed?"
As the four of us agreed in principle, I felt like we had made the right decision, plus I got the airline that wanted. I felt like it was a personal win that indulged my fantasy and as we had not secured it yet, I would have to sit back and wait and see.
"What has everyone go planned now" I asked.
"We are going to the great barrier reef. It has always been on our bucket list, and to get this close and not visit, I would never here the end of it. We are flying back Tuesday from Brisbane, so we will be back in Munich Thursday"
"How wonderful, it is an amazing place to visit. We've been a few times. Enjoy & sorry I haven't seen Sophia whilst she has been here, but I believe her and Jackson did lunch and some shopping yesterday"
"Yes, please thank him for that, it was appreciated"
"I'm going to visit dad"
There was a sense of awkwardness as Steven said that. Although I hadn't forgotten, I should not have raised the subject.
"Klaus, what have you got planned."
"I have an old aunt I keep promising to visit in New Zealand. I thought I would spend a few days with her, before heading back to New York."
"Sounds great. If you two are ready to leave Tuesday night, my plane is heading to New York with Jules and her extended crew. Jump a ride with them."
"I will get to meet my great nephews at last" Steven smiled.
"Sounds great. I will make sure I keep in contact with Steven. I am flying to New Zealand shortly, if you don't need me, I need to run"
"Certainly. Enjoy the land of the long white cloud" I said as he departed.
"just before you go, I am heading to LA on Saturday on some personal business. I will be gone a week. If you need me I will be on cell, but just remember the time difference"
"Oh, you and Jackson holidaying?" Steven asked.
"I wish. I need to help a friend with some family issues that are long overdue"
Shooting off home I just wanted to kick back. Something was nagging me and I couldn't put my finger on it. I was tired, I still wasn't 100%, so maybe that was it. But I just didn't feel right, and I couldn't figure out why.
"Feel like some lunch big boy" I asked Michael as we hopped in the car.
"I'm always hungry." He smiled
"Good. Hang on a second then" as I picked up my phone.
"Hey Bub. I'm hungry. Want to meet somewhere for lunch?"
"OOOOHHHH a date. Sounds good. How about Otto's down on the finger wharf?"
"Sounds great. I have Romeo with me. Bring Chris. It will be nice to have those two for a change."
"Done. Give me 30mins"
It was only 10 mins drive for us to get there. And as we arrived, I walked the old wharf and surrounds and just felt the sun on my face. As we approached the restaurant, people were staring at us, and I felt uncomfortable for a change. We sat anyway, and had a lovely waterfront table that had just the right amount of shade to enable us to enjoy the heat the sun bought with it, but protected from the direct heat. I ordered a bottle of wine, and a vodka whilst I waited, and a Coke Zero for Michael."
"I'm watching my weight" he said as he placed the straw to his mouth.
"Whatever" I laughed. As we opened our menu's Jackson and Chris arrived, and as he lent down to kiss me, I could see from the corner of my eye camera's clicking everywhere.
"Arseholes. Just one bit of peace would be nice" I spat out in frustration.
"Let's give them a show as he grabbed me and stuck his tongue down my throat"
I broke out laughing as he did such and was trying to picture the headlines in the morning's papers. We were out and proud. If they chose to make a scene out of it, go for it. I personally no longer gave a fuck. I was rich, I was generous, I was also now powerful. Let them come at me.
As we were sitting on the promenade the paparazzi would not leave us alone and sat directly opposite us in the public space clicking pic after pic of everything we were doing. I was at the end of my tether when Chris spoke up.
"Please, let me deal with it, boss"
"Go for it"
As Chris stood and Michael joined them, they both removed their jackets to reveal that they were carrying a gun. There was no problem with it. They were licensed security recognised by the Australian Government. As I watched them go over to talk to the paparazzi, they seemed to have everything under control. They spoke quietly for a few minutes and as they turned to walk back to us, one of them made a comment that stopped Michael in his tracks. I could see Chris clench his fist and turn back towards them.
It happened all so fast as they both picked up a photographer each and hurled them in the depth of the harbour some 6 meters below, with camera gear around their neck.
As the stunned group of patrons in the restaurants watched, they rose to their feet and applauded the actions of Michael and Chris. I was probably not feeling the same way, but I did admire them for getting rid of trash.
Calmly as the returned to their seats, I looked at them both. "Wasn't an easier way?"
"I thought about it, but looked like fun"
"So now we await the police" I guess as poured us another glass of wine.
We'd spent the next hour and a half eating and chatting in relative peace. It was just other diners who kept thanking us as they were leaving. Some minor celebrities, high flying business types and a few high profile Sportspeople mainly, who were sick of the pap attacking all the time.
By the time we left, we still hadn't seen the police, and figured we wouldn't, or if we did, they'd call at home.
As we drove home, I managed to convince Michael that I would be safe in the passenger seat with Jackson, and that they could tail us.
Jackson loved his car and I knew it was a good choice. It suited him so well and his smile when driving it was evident as we pulled up at the lights and people stared at him. He'd wave and smile as if he was the most important person in the world. I was glad I could spoil him and I was glad I was sharing it with him.
Arriving safely at home Chris lectured Jackson about speeding.
"Slow down or you are grounded"
"Yes Dad" Jackson replied
As the garage door was closing, the police pulled up out front. How did we know this was coming. I went out to greet them and spoke to them for about 5 mins. I explained what had happened, and then explained the homophobic remark the photographers had made, directed at Michael.
"You do know that hate speech is a great crime, don't you officers?"
"Thanks Mr Von Garbner. We will see that no further action is coming. But can I please ask that Starsky & Hutch there don't expose their firearms in public, unless needed"
I laughed at this analogy and shook both their hands before walking inside with a smile.
"He called you two Starsky & Hutch" I nodded as I walk to the stairs.
As they all laughed, I went upstairs and into my office to follow up on some items that I needed to attend to.
One of things in my email I wasn't expecting was the resignation of Inga. She was turning 70 in 6 weeks, and wanted to leave then. She had devoted 55 years to our organisation and had dealt with some crap over the years, including my grandparents. I couldn't blame her, but I thought about replacing her, and then thought, it is actually Johan's decision. I would talk to him later.
Karl came and spoke to me about clothing I would need for the trip, and was in the middle of packing. It was a fairly run of the mill afternoon, followed by a pleasant evening of dinner with the family, before I left in the morning.
