A new start coming out of pain:
Chapter 2
Well that speech, reaction and football practice went very well. I was one of the five players that started out. As I walked out of the back of the school to go to my car I heard my name yelled out. As I turned around I got a fist shoved in my face. I stumbled back and hit my car. But my moves were fast enough for my head to dodge the next fist that was aimed to hit my face again. I was also able to use my book bag as a shield. Just as I was falling to the ground from the constant barrage of fist hitting my book bag, my football teammates came running to my aid. My attacker fled when he heard my teammates running toward us. I was dazed and totally out of it.
One of my teammates ran to get the coach and told him what happened. The coach quickly told one of the guys to get my stuff and take my car to my house and for another teammate to follow him so he could take him home after delivering my car and book bag to my home. He sent another teammate to the school office to inform the Principal and to have someone call my dad with instructions for him to meet us at the hospital. Then the coach sent another teammate to get his car from the teacher's lot to bring it around to where we were at. I got loaded into the coach's car and he took me immediately to the hospital.
Just as we got in the ER my dad came running in. As the doctor was checking me out, the coach and dad talked. I was told that I had a mild concussion and could go home. But I asked dad if I could go and see Devon first. So both of us went up to see him. He was awake and looked very upset and alone. When we walked in he broke down and cried. When I reached the edge of his bed I took him in my arms and hugged him and tried to comfort him.
While I was holding Devon my dad leaned over and ran his hand through Devon's hair and spoke to us. He told us he was in court today regarding Devon and his parents. In short the Judge removed Devon from his parents care for his safety. Before my dad finished speaking Devon cried, "I don't have anyone anymore." My dad soothingly calmed Devon down. Then dad continued to tell us the reason he was in court was to ask the Judge for custody of Devon. The Judge agreed to dad's request with no objection and with the approval of CPS (Child Protective Services). Dad told Devon that him being the sheriff helped along with Kurt and him growing up together. Dad said to Devon, "So when you are released from the hospital you will come live with us. We have already collected everything from your bedroom where you used to live and we will set you up in the spare bedroom next to Kurt's bedroom." We both looked at dad and then at each other. Devon looked conflicted and concerned but dad told him not to worry about it and that we will handle everything together as a family. To say the least, I was ecstatic and elated with joy with everything my dad and mom were doing. A nurse came in to tell us visiting hours were over for the day. Before we said good night and headed out I leaned over to kiss Devon and told him, "I love you very much."
On the way home Dad and I talked about what happened at school. I told him the team meeting went very well and that the team is supportive of me and that they were sorry about the way somethings were previously handled. He then asked about what happened in the parking lot. I said, "Oh that." I told him someone yelled my name and that as I turned around I got hit in the face but did not see who it was. We talked a little more about Devon's and my personal safety and that for now I need to be alert of my surroundings.
As we pulled up the house we both looked at each other in shock. There were at least 15 to 20 cars all over the place. We parked and went inside. My mom had a look on her face that made me and dad crack up laughing. She came over to us and said if I was throwing party I should have asked first! She told us everyone is out back. She asked how I was doing and that she had been told what happened when my car and book bag were dropped off. And dad had also called her while I was visiting with Devon.
Dad, mom and I went into the back yard and we saw what looked like a pizza party. Everyone was talking and hanging out. What I suddenly realized was that all of the varsity and JV football teams and the whole scholastic debate team were at the party. I joined the crowd with mom and dad. The two coaches came over to me and asked how I was doing and how Devon was feeling. I told them Devon was still hurting but that I was fine. I then shared with them everything my dad told Devon and me at the hospital. They were thrilled with the news. Especially regarding dad and mom getting custody of Devon.
When my conversation with the coaches was basically over Riley and Baron from the debate team come over and with the coaches help got everyone's attention. What was said was mainly directed towards me but it was also to affirm the group's resolve on the matter of Devon's and my wellbeing. All three teams had talked after today's event in the parking lot. It was decided that until Devon and I go off to collage we are to be under the combined protection of the debate team and both the varsity and JV football teams. It was all worked out that neither Devon nor I would be without two or more guys at any given time at school or in between and if we ever found ourselves in a situation we were to call one of the coaches with our location.
The coach told me that it was something some of the guys talked about after practice and that the details were going to be worked out as the week went on. The plan without the details was put together rather fast after what happened in the parking lot. And the group also figured the news about Devon being in the hospital and me being attacked in the parking lot will hit the school gossip mill by Tuesday but will definitely be all out by Wednesday. So the three teams decided that if they demonstrate that Devon and I are accepted and protected, their "show of force" will head off any "issues" or confrontations with the school bullies.
Tuesday at school was strange. I pulled in to the parking lot and got a decent parking space. A few of my teammates were there and we were talking as the bell went off so we went on inside to go to our classes. I was walking to my locker and as I got there some other students that I did not know very well came up and asked me what happened. I simply told them there was a fight in the parking lot after school yesterday.
During first hour the principal announced that there had been attack on a student in the parking lot yesterday and that this kind of behaver would not be tolerated. He asked that if anyone was a witness to the parking lot incident to please report it to his office immediately. After that all eyes in the classroom were on me. I cleared the air and stated that I was one that was attacked.
The rest of the day went well until lunch. I will admit it was great having everyone around to watch my back. As I finished eating I realized that I needed to hit the restroom. As I was getting up to go Riley got up to go with me. But I told him I was going to restroom and that I felt I that didn't need a "bodyguard" to piss. So I left the cafeteria by myself to hit the restroom. I went in to piss and just as I zipped up Sean (one of the school bullies) and his group of assholes came in. The first words out of his face was, "So Kurt, I hear you're a fag." I turned around and looked at him, nose to nose. I told him to fuck off and tried to walk around him but one of his little minions got in my way.
Just as Sean was about to grab me a toilet flushed. A kid came out and saw us and had a look of fear on his face. Sean took one look at him and told him to get the fuck out. He ran out really fast. As he ran out Sean looked at me and said, "Fag, I am going to kick your ass!" I chuckled and had a grin on my face. I knew who that kid was. Troy is on the debate team with Devon. I knew he would get me the help I so desperately needed at that moment in time.
Back in the cafeteria Troy ran up to David and told him I was in trouble and needed help "like right now" in the restroom. David quickly gathered all the guys from the football team that were in the cafeteria and headed to the restroom. Just as Sean threw his fist toward my face, which I was able to dodge, the restroom door swung open. He and the other bullies turned around saw a large group of football jocks heading right toward them. The thought coming out of my mind was that the whole situation was about to get very "intense".
To be continued with Chapter 3.
