This is my first story, so please let me know how I'm doing. I have been reading the stories on Nifty for about three years, and decided that I wanted to give it a try as a Nifty writer. I would like to know what you think... so drop me an email, and let me know. Please add the story title in the subject line. I want to thank the few that have taken the time to email me. Good or bad I would like to know that you are reading my story.

I want to thank Joe for all the help he has given me throughout this story. Without his help, I probably wouldn't be as far into the story as I am. I also want to thank Jere for taking the time to edit the story for me.

So, get comfortable, read the story, and I'm hoping that you enjoy it!

A Voice from The Past

Chapter 8

"Andy! What is going on? Why did Jimmy just run out here crying?" Mrs. Caldwell asked.

"I----I don't know! We were having a nice conversation; then I mentioned that I was a police officer, and he took off running. I didn't mean to upset him. What did I do?" Andy asked.

"Oh, Andy, just let me have a minute with Jimmy. Then you come to his room. It will be okay. I don't think you want to talk about things out here. Evidently, Jimmy needs more privacy," Mrs. Caldwell said. She gave Andy directions to Jimmy's room, then left to find Jimmy.

"Jimmy?" Mrs. Caldwell said, while looking around Jimmy's room. "Jimmy, I know you're in here," Mrs. Caldwell said. She saw Jimmy in the corner, holding a picture tight to his chest, just rocking back in fourth, talking quietly to himself.

"Jimmy, Honey, come on; get up from the floor and tell me what happened," Mrs. Caldwell said, as she put her arms around him, and held him close to her.

"Mrs. Caldwell did you know Andy is a cop ?" Jimmy asked.

"No I didn't. What does that have to do with anyth------ Oh no! Jimmy, sweetie," Mrs. Caldwell said, being interrupted by Andy at the door.

"Mrs. Caldwell, can I have a minute with Jimmy." Andy asked.

"NO! NO! NO! Please don't leave me with him!"Jimmy begged.

"Jimmy, sweetie, it will be okay. Just talk to him. I will be right outside your door; just let me know if you need me," Mrs. Caldwell said, hugging Jimmy. She had become very fond of the boy, and it pained her to see him so miserable.

"Andy, take it easy with him; just talk with him. Try to get him to tell you what is going on," Mrs. Caldwell said to Andy, as she left the room.

"Jimmy" Andy said. As he pushed the door closed, but not quite closing it all the way.

Jimmy looked up at Andy, with tears in his eyes. "Can you leave me alone, please?" Jimmy said.

"Jimmy, I'm not going to hurt you, and, no, I am not going to leave you alone. You and I will work through this together! Please give me time, and tell me why you are so upset. I would like to help, if I can," Andy said.

"You're a cop! I don't want to be around you, much less be friends!" Jimmy said, almost yelling.

"Yes, I'm a cop; what does that have to do with our being friends?" Andy asked.

"Cops get away with anything they want. If they do something wrong, they work their way out of getting in trouble," Jimmy said.

"I'm not going lie to you, Jimmy. Yes, sometimes a cop can get out of trouble, just because they are a police officer. The good cops outweigh the bad cops, so we try to stop it. What is it about me being a cop that is causing trouble for you?" Andy asked.

"Do you know a Lieutenant Daniel McDowell?" Jimmy asked.

"Yes, I do; he is in jail awaiting trial for allegedly killing his son. Why do you ask?" Andy questioned.

"You see this picture here?" Jimmy asked, showing Andy the picture.

"Is that you?" Andy asked.

"No, it is not!" Jimmy said.

"The picture looks like you," Andy said, looking closely at the picture.

"It's my twin brother," Jimmy said, and broke down crying.

"Jimmy, I know we just met, but I would like to help! So, please, tell me what Lieutenant McD---- Oh NO!" Andy stopped. He now thought he knew what was happening with Jimmy.

"The picture is my twin brother, Jeremy. He was my best friend, and my Dad killed him, thinking he was me," Jimmy said, breaking into tears again.

"Your father thought he was killing you? Why?" Andy asked, not believing what he heard.

"Yes, he wanted to kill me, because he found out that I am----," Jimmy paused for a minute, and thought, `If I tell Andy that I'm gay, he would be gone.' "He found out that I'm gay," Jimmy said, in a whisper so low that Andy was almost not hearing him. "He was not happy about it. Jeremy didn't care. He loved me for me. He said he would always be there for me, no matter what. Now he is gone and it is my fault." Jimmy began crying harder.

"Jimmy, that can't be; you poor thing. Where is your Mother?" Andy asked.

"She died when we were born. It has only been me, Jeremy, and Dad," Jimmy said.

"I have known Lt. McDowell for awhile, and I had no idea he was homophobic. He knew my....," Andy stopped what he was about to say.

"See, I knew you would be on his side, because you are a cop. GET OUT! Mrs. Caldwell!" Jimmy started yelling.

"No, Jimmy, just let me talk to you, please." Andy asked.

"What is going on?" Mrs. Caldwell asked, peeking in the door.

"It's okay; can you give us a few more minutes?" Andy asked.

"Jimmy, is that okay?" Mrs. Caldwell asked.

Jimmy looked at Andy. "Please, Jimmy can we talk about this?" Andy asked.

"Okay, I'll talk to him, but will you leave the door open?" Jimmy asked.

"I'll be right here outside the door. If you need me, Jimmy, just call for me!" Mrs. Caldwell said, giving Andy a stern look.

"Jimmy, can you tell me what happened?" Andy asked.

"Jeremy had gone away for the weekend, camping with some friends. He wasn't due home till Sunday. So, I guess Dad had planned for this all to happen Saturday, since Jeremy would be gone. I had made plans to go to the movies with some friends. Dad and I had been fighting since Jeremy left. Like I said, he was not happy to find out that I am gay. So he said I could go, so I would be out of the house, I think. Then I guess he made his plans to make the house look like it had been broken into. I was to come home, and would be killed. I was told to come home right after the movies. Dad and I had been fighting, as I said, and I decided I would go out for pizza after the movie. By the time I got home, maybe Dad would be asleep. Little did we know that one of Jeremy's friends got sick, and they came home early," Jimmy said, he had to stop for a minute.

"Take your time," Andy said.

"From what I have been told, Jeremy got home, and the house was dark. It was early, way too early for Dad and me to be in bed. He thought maybe I was out, and Dad got called to work, like he often does. For some reason, which I will never know, Jeremy started to go into the kitchen door. He usually goes in at the front door. As soon as Jeremy opened the door, Dad shot him. That is where Dad was waiting for him. Well waiting for me. I don't how much time passed before I got there. The place was crawling with cops. Even with Dad and I fighting like we were, I got a big knot in my stomach. I walked in the kitchen, and I couldn't believe what I saw. Dad was on the floor holding Jeremy in his lap, crying. I knew the moment I saw Jeremy that he was gone. My life is over; there is no reason to live. Dad looked at me, and made me feel even worse. He said `This wasn't supposed to happen! Why my boy? You were supposed to be out of town. This can't be happening!" Jimmy stopped again, thinking. I will hear those words for the rest of my life."

Jimmy looked at Andy, who was now in tears himself, so, Jimmy went over to Andy and gave him a hug. "I was on leave when this was happening, because my brother was in the hospital. I never heard any of this. I guess it's because we are not suppose to discuss the Lieutenant at work. Jimmy, I'm so sorry you have gone through this, but please don't think you will be alone. I would like to be your friend, and help you through this," Andy said.

"You can't help me! You work for my father!" Jimmy said.

"Just because I work at the same precinct, does not mean that I believe him, and am on his side. Jimmy, he is in jail, so I doubt that I will be working with him," Andy said.

Jimmy looked up at Andy. "You believe me? You know I'm gay, and you still want to be my friend?" Jimmy said, with the biggest grin.

"Jimmy, I'm going to tell you something, but I'm not going to get into a lot of details right now. However, I will tell you one day. We have a lot in common, that you don't realize. I have a twin brother, as well, and he is also gay.
