I had to force myself to go back into my room, my brain had been thrown into overdrive. I sat down at my desk and tapped my hand annoyingly on the top of it. Opening my computer I sent an email to my friend back home, she was good at giving me perspective when weird stuff happened like this. It helped to type it, getting it out made me realize that it was real but that there was more that I didn't know...like why?
I lay back down on the bed and Corey sleepily curled up into me. I laid on my back with my chest bared and my sleep pants comfortably fitted to me. His hand was on my chest slowly playing with my muscles running them under his fingers. It was strangely relaxing, due to the fact that I was in shock.
"Good morning my knight..." He said.
"Good morning." I said rather non-emotionally.
"What's wrong, are you upset about what happened last night?" He said fearfully.
"No, it was amazing, just like you are. There is just something going on right now I'm not so sure about." I said smiling.
"Okay Mr. Cryptic, I'm going to get something to drink, you think about whatever you're thinking about." He rose and walked to the door, with his hand on the door; I jumped up and stopped him.
"No! Don't do that...um...stay here let me get it." He looked at me strangely.
"Why? What's out there?" He said.
"Nothing, I mean I just don't want you to...I mean...just let me get it." I looked at him pleadingly. He went and sat down at my desk after giving me one last estranged glance.
I opened the door just enough for me to slip out and then closed it again, slowly and quietly. I treaded across the floor softly, trying to make as little noise as possible. I stood at door to the kitchen when I turned to look at the couch, Cameron slept on silently...alone.
I spun around so fast, to get a good view of the couch, that I nearly lost balance. Cameron was lying there gripping a silk blanket and smiling softly in his dreams. I was looking around almost franticly trying to find where Ben had gone. My door was still shut and no sound coming from inside, so I glance toward Cameron's door and I hear the toilet flush in the bathroom. Borderline panic I almost dove into the kitchen, opening the fridge and hiding in it.
"Oh..." A voice came from the door. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Standing I looked at Ben East. At first I could do nothing but glare at him, anger flooded to replace the panic that had been there a moment before.
"Um...I...um...how's it going?" He asked me.
"What?! You..." Anger flooded me; I lurched toward him picking up a frying pan as I stormed toward him. He franticly backed up tripping over a kitchen chair and stumbling back into the living room. Cameron stepped in front of him and calmly placed a hand on my chest.
"Please calm down. Listen to me." His blue eyes pierced me and sent shocks down my body. I focused on his blue eyes, letting all my rage slowly collect back. Ben was actually looking fearful; he didn't know what I knew and where this rage came from.
"You said once that you were happy as long as I was happy, now can't the two of you get over your hatred toward each other. For me..." his stare was on me again. He knew that this would at least abate my anger.
"You don't know what he's done." I pointed blazing at Ben.
"What are you talking about?" Ben said incredulously.
"I'm talking about the fact that you beat your brother so bad he ended up in the hospital!" I almost screamed this last bit, I was furious.
"What are you talking about? When was Corey in the Hospital?! I would never lay a hand on him!" Ben shouted.
It was then that I noticed that my door was cracked, and Corey was peeking out at us. Gently I moved to the door and I saw him draw back away. Opening it I reach my hand in, leading Corey out. He was in tears, and he looked fearful...not of his brother...but of me.
"Corey, what's going on?"
"I lied..." A knife pierced my heart. "...Ben did nothing, I'm so sorry!" He pleaded. He dropped to his knees still holding my hand. I was staring at him with my mouth agape, how could he have tricked me like this, this was treason to our 'love'.
"I told you I loved you..." I said as it was the only thing that I could think of.
"I love you too!"
"No...I don't think I can love you." I turned and walked back to the kitchen slamming the slide away door. I picked up a glass intending on getting something to drink but I hurled at the opposite wall instead. Picking up a second glass, I took a deep breath, and tears flowed from my eyes.
"Stop this..." a soft voice came from the door. Cameron walked in and slid the door behind him. I took a deep breath and my shoulders sank. He walked up and hugged me from behind allowing me to sink into his comfort.
"...he did it out of love for you; he wanted you to love him. There has to be more behind this... And Ben wouldn't do that." He said slowly.
A bit of my anger toward Ben had gone away when I found out Corey was lying, so I turned and looked him in the eyes. "When were you planning to tell me?"
"Tell you what?" he said coyly.
"About you dating my one time worst enemy, at this crazy school." He smiled at me when I said this.
"Oh I don't know, I was waiting for this opportune moment, you know me omniscient as ever." I rolled my eyes at him. "So are you ready to forgive and forget?"
"No I don't think so but I am at least ready to listen." I took a deep breath as we strode from the door and walked toward the pair now sitting on the couch.
Ben's mouth twitched toward a smile at me hopefully. "Tell him what you just told me." He pointed at me. I grimaced as I stared back at the two of them, I couldn't help but look at Corey with a pain in my chest where my heart was aching. I loved him still...after the lie I want to do nothing more than sweep him up, tell him it's ok, and then ask him what really happened. At least one of those things was about to come true.
"Well..." he glanced at me and then looked back at his knees and began to speak rapidly. "...I was at this party thing, because I was upset that I had yelled at you, and I was planning on like make it all go away for a little bit. I wanted to be with you and I could stand the fact that I had been too ashamed to not be with you. Well when I was leaving the party I was stumbling around in the park and I tripped and rolled down a small hill." He point to the small scrapes and bruises on his body. "When I stood up I was even more depressed and still rather drunk, so I began to wander along again, when a running figure came up beside me. I thought it was you at first, and when the hands wrapped around me...I didn't hesitate to return the kiss. I thought it was you. But when the hands dove into my pants, my senses flooded back to me...The Dean was standing there massaging both my front and behind. I was in ecstasy and too drunk to resist. However when he flipped me over on a bench, I knew something wasn't right and kicked backward almost aimlessly, I connected with something, then I stood and slid my pants back up and ran. I tripped and that's when I sprained my ankle, and I stumbled to the hospital in the morning." He took a deep breath and shuttered into sobs.
"WHAT!" I stood and yelled angrily. Everyone jumped at my random outburst. The story had taken a second to sink in and then I had registered everything. "The Dean tried to rape you?!"
"That's what he said..." I thought at first Ben had said it, but when I realized Cameron was staring at him disbelieving and had said it, I looked incredulous again.
"I'm so sorry." Corey muttered. I looked down at him pushing every ounce of anger to the back of my head, and tried my hardest to smile at him. The smile came out genuine and Ben moved over so that I could sit with him. I put my arm around and he shuttered and fell into me. I smiled as his weight and warmth enveloped me.
I fixed him a cup of tea and sent him back to my room to lie down to relax; crying and reliving something like that had exhausted him. I sat down with Ben and Cameron, holding hands on the couch.
"Firstly I want to know why you flipped out when you found out Corey and I were talking to each other." I stared at Ben
"Ah...about that, first I'm sorry about that, but he is my brother and I didn't know what you were like, you had smarted off to me randomly, so you know I had instant dislike for you. And you had already had a reputation of man handling some people, so I didn't know what to think of you."
"Second, why were gay bashing Cameron in the shop that day, and now you're sitting there holding hands with him." I stared at him.
"Well, could I get past with the excuse of the old "schoolyard" excuse? Ah I guess not, well that is the best answer I'm afraid. I liked him, and I was afraid so the best way I knew to handle it was to bash him. When he stood up to me, it made me realize how dumb I was and so I quickly tried to remedy it, by kissing him unexpectedly." Cameron almost blushed as Ben said this.
"Third..."
"Look, I have answered your questions to the best of my ability, and I am quickly falling for your roommate and you are just going to have to get used to it." I managed a smile as I saw Cameron beam at Ben.
"Well if you protect him as much as you protect your brother then I have no quorum and can say confidently that we may become friends on some level yet." I said smiling. Ben returned my smile and I looked down at my hands. "On to more pressing business, what are we going to do about the Dean?"
"I have a thought about that..." We discussed our plan to get the Dean found out and fired, possibly imprisoned for his crimes. It was going to be interesting to set this up, and was going to take a lot of planning and fake seduction on our part. But it was going to get done and Corey's injustice was going to be righted.
I returned to my room at lunch time to find Corey sound asleep. I clicked my email and opened the letter from my friend back home.
Ayden,
It was interesting to read your letter this morning, it sounds like you attend a very interesting school. I can say I can't wait. The best advice I can give you is to listen and be aware of what's going on. Not everything always is what it seems. You know this. But anyways I have a surprise for you my darling...I've been accepted to Gray Academy under the new Integration Constitution that it's implementing by the end of the semester.
Love,
Jem
I stared at the computer screen and then instantly checked the school website and there it was. Apparently overnight all in one move the School Governors had fired the Dean and brought in a new person, a woman. She had brought with her, Integration Constitution Decree of Equality. Female students were now welcome to apply and be accepted for attendance at Gray Academy.
