Correction

This is a corrected version of Part 6. During Tom and Calvin's discussion near the end of the chapter I mistakenly identified Tom as Mike. Thanks to Micheal for his assistance in catching my boo-boo. I appreciate the help greatly. Also Tom should have been telling Calvin to learn to control his temper, not Rusty. Thanks to Joseph for that catch. I appreciate the help.

Allen - by tim Part 6

(Earlier in the evening at the Cooper home.)

Rusty had never felt so bad in his life. Just three nights ago his best friend had been savagely attacked while coming out. His buddy was in pain, both physically and emotionally. In response Rusty went after the attacker today and found out that he was a victim as well. Rusty now hated Calvin's dad, he was the one who caused all of this. But he didn't know how to feel about Allen and Calvin. After all Allen was his very best friend, but he felt awful about his fight with Calvin and the abuse Calvin has been through. Suddenly Rusty's misery was interrupted by a soft knock on the door.

"Rusty" called out Allen. "Is everything okay buddy?" There was no answer so Allen opened the door. "Bud, you look like you're going through hell! What's wrong?" He then sat down next to Rusty.

"I'm so-o sorry" said Rusty.

"Sorry! Sorry for what?" replied Allen.

"I feel like I let you down today" said Rusty.

Allen gave his friend a brief, but warm hug and said "Russ, my amigo, you've never let me down and I don't think you ever could. What would make you think that?"

"Becuase" said Rusty, "when I got to school this morning and saw Calvin acting like nothing had happened, I decided to confront him."

"Oh no!" exclaimed Allen. "You didn't, did you?"

"Yes" replied Rusty sullenly.

"He was really acting like nothing had happened?" asked Allen.

"Yes, he was" said Rusty. "Anyways, I was really pissed off so I almost had it out with him in English class until the teacher walked in. After Chris stopped me, I decided to wait until after school. When Calvin showed up after school, I knocked him down and told him I wanted him to know what that felt like." By now Rusty had begun softly sobbing again.

Allen put his hand on his friend's shoulder and said "Oh my god! What happened then?"

"I wish I had kept my promise to my dad." said Rusty, then continued. "Calvin told me he already knew what it felt like, and then told me some of the things that has happened to him. He told me about his mother leaving him when he was eight, and then when he cried to his dad about it, his dad knocked him down so hard it hurt for a month. Then he said his dad hit him almost every day until he became good at boxing."

Allen's eyes grew wide and a look of shock spread across his face as he said, "I knew there was something wrong with Calvin, but I didn't know it was that bad!"

Rusty said, "He also said his dad would actually kill him if he thought Calvin was gay. He seemed to be convinced about it and he convinced me too. Dude, I think Calvin is really sorry about what happened, but he doesn't think you'll ever forgive him."

"Rusty pal," said Allen "you've got to talk to your dad about this. He wants me to have Calvin arrested!"

"Oh no!" exclaimed Rusty. "That would be so wrong! Don't worry, I'll have a talk with him after dinner. One thing I can't figure out though is, why does God let everything get so screwed up?"

"Don't look at it that way" said Allen. "I think it's more like, some people like Calvin's father insist on screwing things up in spite of what God wants."

"Thanks pal" said Rusty. "I really think I needed to hear that."

With that both boys got up with their arms around each others shoulders and went downstairs to dinner. Just before they came into view of Mike and Emily they separated, then looked at each other and began to giggle at each other. It was the first time today for Rusty.

When they sat down at the table Emily said "Is everything alright now boys?"

Both boys replied "Yeah" in unison and then began giggling again.

Then Rusty said, "I need to talk to you after dinner dad."

As Mike was repying "Okay. We'll talk in my office." he noticed Rusty and Allen exchanging glances at each other. He thought, "Oh no, what am I in for now."

After the carnage known as dinner with two teenage boys, both boys stood up at the same time, wiped their mouths at the same time, and thanked Emily in unison. Emily laughed as she responded to Allen and Rusty's thank you, then Rusty went to join his dad in the small room Mike had turned into a home office.

Mike said to Rusty "I'm glad you wanted to talk Rusty, I need your help with Allen."

"Allen?" replied Rusty. "What's wrong with Allen?"

"I just can't seem to convince him he needs to file a report against Calvin." said Mike.

"You mean turn Calvin in?" exclaimed Rusty. "No dad! He can't do that!"

"Oh no!" groaned an exhasperated Mike. "Not you too! What is wrong here? Are you and Allen both coming down with something?"

"No sir," cried out Rusty, "we just can't have him locked up!" Rusty then told Mike the story about his encounter with Calvin today. By the time he finished he was crying again and Mike had a few tears running down his cheek.

"Dad," said Rusty, "I'm worried about Calvin. The way he was acting this afternoon, I'm afraid something might happen to him. Please dad! You gotta help him!"

"Don't worry son," replied Mike, "I understand now. I'll do everything I can to make sure nothing happens to him." Mike then kissed his son on top of the head and sent him off to be with Allen. Mike was going to have a few calls to make, including to Robert Wilson. If Robert was anything like he was being made out to be, Mike wasn't looking forward to this at all.

Robert Wilson was sitting in his living room with his buddies, getting drunk and watching a boxing match on pay per view. Apparently Calvin just missed his father when he left, fortunately. Suddenly Robert was interrupted by the phone.

"Wilson here!" snarled Robert. "What the hell do you want?"

"Hello sir," replied Mike in a civil tone, "My name is Mike Cooper and I'm a caseworker for the DCF. Do you mind if I record our conversation so I'm not accused of doing anything improper later on?"

"You can do whatever you want," barked Robert "because I'm done talking to you!"

"Before you hang up, please hear me out for a minute." said Mike. "We can either talk now, or in about 30 minutes in the presence of a police officer."

"Okay," Robert conceded, "what the fuck do you want?"

"Well," said Mike, "I wanted to talk to you about Calvin."

"What has the little son of a bitch done now?" screamed Robert.

"Calm down sir." replied Mike. "He hasn't done anything, I just have information that he might be in trouble. Have you seen him this evening?"

"No I haven't!" growled Robert. "But when I do I'm gonna smack the shit out of him for causing me trouble tonight!"

"You're going to do no such thing Mr. Wilson." Mike stated forcefully.

"Are you trying to tell me how to raise my child you asshole!" screamed Robert. "I'll punish him when and how I see fit."

"That's the problem," replied Mike, "I don't think you are fit to be his parent. Let me tell you now Mr. Wilson, when I find Calvin I will file papers to have him removed from your home!"

"Not if I find him first!" said Robert in a menacing tone.

"Can I take that as a threat?" asked Mike.

"You can take that anyway you want you meddling, no good, piece of shit!" Robert spat out. "Now I'm through with you!" With that Robert slammed the phone down.

Mike smiled to himself as he thought "I've got that stupid drunk right where I want him now. Thank God for tape recorders." Mike knew he had his work cut out for him though. Now he had to find Calvin before his father did. Mike immediately called the police and put out an APB on Calvin, but he wanted more than that. He needed to get some leads on Calvin's possible whereabouts. It was time to talk to Rusty and Allen together. "Rusty! Allen! Please come down to my office." Mike yelled out his door.

Tom DeBarry had just carried Calvin in, gave him a mild sleeping pill, and layed him on the bed in the spare bedroom when his telephone began ringing. "Hello," said Tom, "Tom DeBarry here. May I help you?"

"Yeah." slurred an obviously drunk Robert. "Havf you sheen that shon of mine this evenining?"

"No I haven't." said a repulsed Tom. "I really don't expect to see him until Wednesday, that's the only time he has scheduled to work out this week."

"Welll, if you shee him before I do, plleashe gif me a call." said Robert, barely able to form a complete sentence.

Tom set the phone down and thought to himself, "God, what a revolting piece of crap!" He then went to check on his boy and make sure he was going to be comfortable through the night. He knew tommorrow was going to be a rough day.

"Okay boys," said Mike "me and Calvin need your help. Do either of you have any ideas on where I might be able to find him?"

"You mean Calvin is missing?" asked a frightened Allen.

"Oh my god!" exclaimed Rusty. "You don't think something's happened to him already, do you?"

"No, no." said Mike in a reassuring tone. "I don't think anything has happened to him yet. I just talked to his father on the phone and he hasn't seen him yet, but now we have to find him before his father does."

"Is his father going to hurt him again?" asked Allen.

"No, not if we find him first." said Mike. "I've got enough of Mr. Wilson on tape to make sure he never hurts Calvin again. All we have to do is find him."

"Okay." said Rusty. "The only thing I can think of is his coach at the gym he works out at. It's the one on Center Street, I think."

"Yeah," said Allen "that's the only thing I can think of too. He doesn't have a lot of friends at school."

"Okay." said Mike. "I'll have to check out the gym first thing in the morning. Maybe we'll get lucky and the police will pick him up first. Don't worry guys, it's only for his protection. If they find him we'll find him a nice, safe place to hide out."

"Thanks dad." said Rusty.

"Yeah, thanks Mr. Cooper." said Allen.

The next morning when Rusty woke up, he took a shower then dressed, ate his breakfast, said goodbye to his parents and Allen, gave Allen a hug, then rushed out the door to get to school. "Wait a minute" thought Rusty. "Gave Allen a hug! What was that about?" When he got to school Rusty rushed around the school to see if he could spot Calvin but had no luck. He thought he might have better luck in second period English, but when he got there Calvin's usual seat was empty.

"Dude!" said Chris. "You must have messed Calvin up pretty bad yesterday. He didn't even come to school today."

"Shut up Chris!" exclaimed Rusty. "I don't feel like hearing about that today."

"Whoa dude!" said Chris. "Chill out man. Don't be so testy. Anyways, if you did he probably deserved it." Then Chris turned and went to his seat.

"Not if you knew what I know." said Rusty softly.

After class Rusty pulled out his cell phone and dialed his dad's number. "Dad," said Rusty "did you find Calvin yet. I looked here at school, but he didn't show up today."

Mike replied, "I'm on my way over to coach DeBarry's house right now. It seems he didn't show up for work today either. I think Calvin might be there and safe."

"Oh god," answered Rusty "I hope so!"

There were two others that were looking for Calvin at school that day. First, Robert Wilson dropped by the school on his way to work to look for his son. Fortunately he had no better luck than Rusty in spotting Calvin. Also a boy sitting in his lonely corner of fifth period Algebra, known as Ricky's World, was waiting and hoping the boy he now loved with all his heart would walk through the door and sit with him again. Unfortunately, that would not happen today.

Calvin stirred from his slumber. He couldn't remember sleeping so long in quite some time, even though his sleep had been invaded by terrible dreams all night. Most of the dreams were concerning different ways that his dad killed him when he found out Calvin's secret. Then Calvin remembered last night. The park, the coach! Oh my god, this must be coach DeBarry's house!

"Oh my god!" screamed Calvin. "The coach! He knows!"

Tom rushed into the room and said, "Calvin, son, are you alright? What was the screaming about?"

Then Calvin babbled out "Coach....last night.....the park....what I said.....I didn't mean.....Coach! Please don't hate me! You're all I have left now!" Then Calvin started crying in the coach's arms.

The coach rubbed Calvin's back and said, "Shh son. I don't hate you, and I'm not going to let anything happen to you. I made you a promise last night and I intend to keep it."

"But coach," cried Calvin "I'm gay!"

"I know, I know." said Tom. "But I also know you didn't choose to be that way. You probably hate yourself right now because you're gay, and you wish more than anything in the world that you weren't. That should tell you that you didn't choose to be gay. It's the way you were born Calvin, and you have to learn to live with it, and accept yourself the way you are."

"Coach! How do you know all that?" inquired Calvin.

"Because my boy, we all go through that." stated Tom.

Calvin looked at Tom with his eyes wide and stammered, "You...you mean you're.....you're gay....too? But coach, you don't act gay!"

"Where does it say in the gay handbook that we have to go around with our wrists bent down, talking like a girl?" asked Tom with a smile on his face. "Just kidding Calvin, there is no gay handbook. The only thing that's expected of us is to be who we are. You don't have to put on some kind of show unless you want to."

"This is a lot to get used to in just twenty four hours." remarked Calvin.

"You just take your time Cal" said Tom. "This is your home now for as long as you need it. I'm going to provide you a home where you can be, and accept who you are. Who knows, you may even begin to enjoy being gay. It can be really fun at times, take my word for it. Just one piece of advice for now though Calvin, if you don't want the whole world to know, don't be so obvious when you check out the other guys."

Tom smiled a very wide, handsome grin, while Calvin blushed furiously then began to laugh softly.

Allen was out walking around the neighborhood just in case he could spot anything that could help. He didn't believe it would do any good, since Calvin lived on the other side of the school from them. But he has been in this area before, so you never know. Just as Allen was about to approach Oak Lane he saw Mike's car come up the street and slow down.

Mike stopped the car and hollered out the window, "What are you doing out here Allen? You want a ride?"

"Sure." said Allen. As soon as he sat down in the car he asked, "What are you doing out here Mr. Cooper? I thought you were supposed to be finding Calvin."

"I think I have." responded Mike. "I think he might be here on Oak Lane at his boxing coach's house."

"Cool!' exclaimed Allen. "Do you mind if I tag along."

"Sure son, no problem." said Mike. "Just make sure you stay out of the way. We wouldn't want anything to happen to those broken ribs of yours."

From inside the house Tom and Calvin heard a knock at the door. Calvin glanced outside the window and turned as pale as a ghost.

"Coach!" exclaimed a panic stricken Calvin. "Don't answer the door. They'll take me away to jail."

"Who'll take you away to jail Calvin?" asked Tom as he looked out the window.

"That's Allen Martin and his friend Rusty's dad. Rusty's dad works for the DCF. Friday night I kind of beat up Allen, and Rusty said I hurt him pretty bad."

"Calvin," said Tom "you've got to learn to control your temper. Do you know if you went to court for something like that with your background, they could have your fists declared deadly weapons? Anyways, I don't think they're here to take you to jail. If they were they would have brought the police with them. Let's go see what they want, okay?"

So Tom went to answer the door with a scared Calvin hiding behind him.

Well, that's about it for now everyone. I probably could have went a little longer with this chapter, but I wanted to make sure I got it posted tonight for you guys. At least things are starting to turn around for the boys now, but don't expect it to be completely smooth sailing, that only happens in books and movies. (Not mine though) We'll see what happens between Calvin and Allen in part 7.

Next: Chapter 8
