Angel in Black, Chapter 4
Old Contacts
"What? I need a reason to visit my son?" the Consul said.
"You're not my father, SIR!" Marcos spat.
"No, maybe not. But I have tried to be the best father I could to you Marcos," the Consul said soothingly.
"You weren't there when I needed you!" Marcos stated.
"I did all I could do Marcos," the Consul replied.
"YOU COULD HAVE DONE MORE!" Marcos yelled at the man.
"Marc! You're out of line!" Calvin stated.
"It's alright Calvin... I understand Matthew's anger. He doesn't understand there wasn't anything more I could do, short of standing down as Consul. And that wouldn't have helped anyone."
"Sir?" Calvin said confused.
"It's okay, Cal; he's right. Sorry, Consul, I was out of line," Marcos apologised.
"Quite alright, Marcos. It's been a few years since we last talked. And you having to move on every few months can't have helped," the Consul allowed.
"It hasn't, sir," Marcos confirmed.
"Things are changing with the Council here, Marcos; soon I might be able to do more to help. For now keep your head down and take care of those boys and their parents."
"Sir, how did you know?" Calvin asked.
"Cal, who did you think my contact was?" Marcos asked.
"Sir?" Calvin asked, completely confused now.
The Consul nodded his head, confirming what Marcos was saying. "I think it's time we left young Marcos here to finish healing."
"Yes sir. I will be out in a moment," Calvin said.
"Alright Calvin, but not too long. And Marcos impressive work with Jacobs. I especially liked how you made it look like suicide. See you again soon Marcos."
"Good evening Consul Larson," Marcos said, and the Consul left.
"Marc what was all this about?" Calvin asked.
"Cal, if I knew, I would tell you. You better not keep the Consul waiting," Marcos said.
"Oh yeah. Later Marc!" Calvin said, following after the Consul.
Marcos was a little suspicious as to exactly why the Consul would visit him like that. He appreciated the help he was given, but it still hurt Marcos that his master wasn't able to do more when Marcos had needed him.
Time passed quickly, and Alex and Tommy grew closer everyday. They really seemed to be brothers to anyone who saw them together. Marie and Bill were happy; they had a happy family and Marcos would visit every couple months. Bill and Marie were even starting to see Marcos as part of their family.
Marcos watched his family everyday. The boys grew older and closer. He could swear they really were brothers. He heard from Calvin more frequently, and his information on the Council became more current. He had no doubt Consul Larson had been helping him there.
As for the Davies family, Marcos was trying his best to keep his distance. But that was getting more difficult. More then a few nights, he found him self walking to their door. Sometimes he would catch himself and go back to his home. But sometimes he just decided to go visit; he would stay for a while play video games with the boys and talk to Marie and Bill.
Bill had asked Marcos exactly what had happened with Tommy's father, so Marcos explained it to him, leaving out a few details: how Tommy had told him what had happened, how he had gone to visit Walter, seen what Walter had planned and that nothing would change his mind, and how he had forced the weak-minded drunk to write a letter explaining everything before shooting himself.
Bill had been a little shocked at first. But when Marcos explained that Walter was either going to murder Tommy if he had lied and gone back to him or the whole family if he hadn't, Bill seemed to calm a little. But he was still a little weary around Marcos for a while after that. When Bill realised that Marcos wasn't just trying to stop a crazed man from murdering his own son but had saved his whole family he cried, not only for what could have happened but for the one who had saved them all.
Life went on for the Davies family without much trouble, just normal everyday life. Bill had lost his job due to budget cuts, but he was still fairly young and skilled so he found another job easily. Marie had become bored being a stay at home mum, and the boys were old enough now anyway, so she decided to go back to work. She had been a nurse before Alex was born. She needed to get some training down before she could go back full time, but she did it.
Alex never had any trouble in school after Tommy had become his friend. They shared all the same friends, tastes in games, movies and everything. Everyone thought it was great. Alex had never looked so happy, and Tommy had changed for the better. His grades were up, he was polite to his teachers, and he never bullied anyone else.
They made the transition to high school pretty well. It took a while to get use to the change in routine, but they managed. The teachers soon realised that Alex was extremely bright. He was bored in classes for students his age. He was tested in all his subjects by his teachers; they found he was ahead of the other kids his age by at least a year. Alex and his parents decided, in consultation with the school, that he would be placed in classes the same as Tommy. Alex loved it; not only was he challenged academically but he was with all his friends and his brother.
They had no real trouble in high school. Alex did get picked on a little. He was a shy boy with brown hair and jade green eyes and a slight figure, but his big brother was always there for him. Tommy had become quite the athlete; he was really into Aussie rules football though it was somewhat a cover for the kids and teachers. Unknown to anyone, Tommy had asked Marcos to teach him some martial arts; he wanted to be able to defend himself or his family if he had to. He had started to get some pretty good definition to his arms, chest, and abs, and the football was a good excuse.
Marcos would train Tommy every night after school for two hours. Even though Marcos would restrain himself from harming Tommy, as a result of training with a vampire he would have several small cuts and more then a few bruises. Tommy never complained about any of them; he was glad he would be able to protect himself or his friends. By Tommy's fifteenth birthday, he was much stronger and faster than all the other boys on his team, which didn't go unnoticed by his coach and teachers.
During a practice game after classes, Tommy kicked a goal from well behind the seventy meter marker on the field. All the players on the field and the coach stopped and looked at Tommy wide eyed. "Jacobs how the hell did you kick the ball that far?" the coach asked, still shocked.
"Umm... I just kicked the ball coach," Tommy replied confused.
The coach looked at Tommy like he was joking. "Tommy, that was an amazing kick! Even the best in the AFL have a hard time with the long kicks!"
"It was nothing, coach! Just luck, that's all..." Tommy shrugged then left the field to shower.
The next day Marie and Bill were asked to come to the after school football training by the coach. The school principal and the coach were both waiting for them. Alex was there also. Both Bill and Marie noticed that Alex would watch the boys on the field, especially the ones leaving for the showers shirtless. They knew then that both their boys were not going to have easy lives.
The coach talked to them about how well Tommy was doing with his practice and told them that he would be happy to recommend Tommy for the junior league. Tommy didn't want to play in the juniors. He was happy playing at school games; he didn't want to leave his friends or family. The coach seemed disappointed and the principal was indifferent: Tommy had decided he didn't want to go pro and the discussion was over.
Tommy kept playing until his final year. He had gotten too strong to continue. He was nowhere near a match for Marcos, but any normal teenagers and quite a few adults would have trouble keeping up with him.
Alex's grades were exceptional, and he graduated top of his class with highest marks. Tommy was also extremely bright and graduated with high marks as well. Their parents were at the graduation ceremony, and they were disappointed that Marcos couldn't make it but Bill had brought a video camera so Marcos could see it all later.
Marcos however was there and saw it all. He was so proud of both boys. No! Young men! Tommy's training had made him a powerfully built young man, Marcos couldn't help but notice how handsome a man Tommy had become. Marcos' thoughts, however, always drifted back to Alex...
To Marcos Alex was a truly beautiful young man. He had grown quite tall and was slim, with a very slight tan. His hair had lightened a few shades over the years and was now a very light brown. His jade green eyes captivated Marcos. He was usually lost in thoughts of Alex. Marcos would occasionally drift into Alex's thoughts when he visited and saw that Alex too had feelings for him but also doubts. Alex didn't know much about Marcos and that scared Alex. That would change soon enough...
Alex also had two questions on his mind all the time. 'What happened to me? And why can't I remember?' Marcos wanted to tell Alex everything that happened to him, but Alex wasn't quite ready to hear it yet.
After Tommy's father died and the case was officially closed the estate all went to Tommy. The house was sold and the money from the sale went into a trust account for him. He had a small fortune in waiting, but he had no interest in the money.
After graduation, Tommy wasn't sure of what he wanted to do, but after all the training he had done with Marcos Tommy was interested in doing more, so he signed up for some martial arts classes and used some of his trust to pay for them. He was quickly moved to the advanced classes, then the master classes. He was stronger, faster and more agile than the instructors. They struggled to lay a hand on him.
Marcos had taught him several different styles and techniques, including a couple no normal human had ever seen before. Marcos was surprised when Tommy actually landed a hit on him while they were sparing. Marcos had no idea Tommy had gotten so fast.
Tommy had also been training Alex a little in defence techniques so he would be able to defend himself if needed, and Marcos was glad Tommy wanted to do that for his brother.
Everything seemed to be going well for the family; Alex was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life so his parents suggested he take some time off. They thought he needed it.
Just after Alex's eighteenth birthday he was becoming lost and depressed. All he could think was 'Why can't I remember?' It was becoming a bad problem for the whole family. They tried to help Alex but he just pushed them away. It was when things had gotten worse that Tommy asked for Marcos help. Alex seemed to shut off completely. No one could get a word out of him; he curled up on his bed and cried silently. Everyday for a week this went on. They were all depressed, even Marcos felt it. Combined with the rest of the family's feelings he couldn't restrain himself. Marcos too cried.
Marcos was fed up. He walked into the Davies house one evening without even knocking. He just walked in and went straight to Alex. He found Alex on his bed curled up weeping, his jade eyes red and swollen. Bill, Marie and Tommy came into the room worried about what was going on. When they saw Marcos they all stopped he waved them all away and said, "Don't worry he will be ok," Then he closed the door behind them.
"Alex? I'm here, you're safe," Marcos said to him, but Alex didn't acknowledge him. Marcos tried something different, 'You're ok, Alex! I'll keep you safe,' He thought to Alex. Marcos had thought the exact words to Alex when Tommy was going to beat him eight years earlier.
Alex's eyes seemed to come back to life, but he wouldn't talk. Seeing the lost look in Alex's eyes Marcos decided it was time. He sat down on the bed and easily pulled Alex into a tight hug. 'I'm here Alex. I'm never going to leave you alone again,' Marcos thought, cradling Alex in his arms.
Marcos waved them out of the room so Bill, Marie and Tommy went in to the family room. They all sat on the couch in a big hug, worried for Alex. And hoping Marcos could get through. Tommy was the first to speak, "I hope he will be ok," he said.
"I hope so too," Marie echoed.
"He will. He has Marcos in there. Marcos has so much love for Alex. Don't tell me neither of you have noticed the way Marcos watches Alex?" Bill asked, surprising them.
Marie and Tommy both looked at Bill, shocked he would say something like that, but they had to admit Marcos did seem to want to be around Alex when ever he came to visit. Tommy realised that Marcos would always ask how Alex was before he would ask about anyone else. "You're right, dad. I love Marky too but I see him as a brother. When Alex talks about Marky, it's not like how he talks about me. His eyes sparkle, and he goes all weird like he's in a dream or something," Tommy tried to explain.
"Tommy, there's something we haven't told you about Alex," Bill said looking at Marie for her consent, she nodded.
"What dad?" Tommy asked.
"Alex was molested when he was six; Marcos was the one who brought him back to us. He also helped to put the man who molested Alex in jail," Bill told him.
Tommy was shocked and felt angry at the thought of someone doing that to his brother. "Why?" he asked.
"Jordan, the man that did it, was a serial rapist; he just did it because he could. Alex had been separated from us after we took him to a movie, and Jordan simply took advantage of that," Bill continued.
"For weeks after Alex would wake up screaming and every time Bill would go in his room and calm him down. Alex would tell Bill of the man in black that brought him back to us; we knew who it was he was dreaming about. But after a while his dreams stopped and he just forgot or suppressed what happened," Marie cut in.
"It wasn't until you went to beat Alex that Marcos came back into our lives. I at first couldn't place his name, but when I saw him at our door that night I immediately knew who he was. And we knew then Marcos had been watching over our family for years. He even helped us to gain a son," Bill said ruffling Tommy's hair.
"Mum, dad excuse me a minute!" Tommy said. He got up and ran into his and Alex's room. He stopped at the door and knocked softly. 'Come in Tommy,' he heard in his head.
Tommy walked in quietly; he was going to ask out loud but decided against it. 'Marky mum and dad just told me what happened to Alex when he was little. And I just wanted to say thank you for everything you did for him and everything you have done for all of us. But we want to ask two things,' Tommy asked.
'Go ahead buddy,' Marcos said. He was singing an old lullaby to Alex in his thoughts, so he didn't bother reading more then Tommy was sending him.
'Well, we are all wondering how Alex is?' Tommy thought.
'His past is haunting him, and I'm going to do my best to help him through it. Soon I'm going to help Alex see what happened, what's hidden in his mind. It's going to be very painful for him emotionally. And I'm not going to leave his side,' he explained to Tommy.
'Okay, we will all be here for you both. We all love Alex and want him to get through this. And we love you too Marky,' Tommy thought and turned to leave the room.
"Tommy, what was the other thing you wanted to ask?" Marcos asked out loud.
Tommy stopped and turned around he had an embarrassed look on his face, "Well, mum and I realised something after dad pointed it out. Alex loves you Marky. It's kinda obvious. We were wondering if you loved him too?" he asked.
Marcos was floored by that question; he never thought about it. He looked down into the jade green eyes of Alex, who was watching him. Alex's eyes were wide and watery. It was that moment he realised every time he had seen Alex, talked to Alex and thought about Alex, just how much he did love Alex and that he had for some time. 'Tommy could you share with Marie and Bill that you're all right,' he thought.
"I do love Alex with all my heart!" he said aloud, and then he leaned in and gently kissed Alex on the lips. Alex was crying, but he had a smile on his face.
"I do love Alex with all my heart!" Alex couldn't believe it! His angel... his Marcos loved him. Alex was looking into Marcos' eyes and for the first time he saw the gold glow. Alex still couldn't bring him self to speak, but he felt the same about Marcos.
Marcos looked at the young man who at that moment looked very much like the frightened little boy he cradled in his arms all those years earlier.
It was time. Marcos was going to help Alex through his pain and help him remember what he needed. Marcos thought, 'Alex, what's going on in that head of yours?' Alex just looked at Marcos; he still wouldn't reply. 'Alex you don't need to talk. Just think what you want to say; I can hear you.' He thought to Alex.
'Marky, why don't you ever use your real name?' Alex asked.
Marcos was shocked; Alex couldn't possibly know his real name. 'How do you know that Alex?'
'Your name is Matthew Jameson, and you were born in eighteen ninety eight in London, England. Matthew's a nice name I like it, why don't you use it?' Alex thought like he was reading it straight from Marcos' mind.
Marcos couldn't understand. How could Alex know his name and when he was born? 'Alex, I don't use that name because people might find me, and they could hurt you. Please tell me how you know that? I haven't told any one my real name or when I was born in more then fifty years,' Marcos thought still confused.
'I saw it in your head Matthew. You're not going to go away again are you?' Alex thought, anxious.
'How is this possible?' Marcos thought to himself. Marcos stopped projecting his thoughts to Alex, 'Alex can you still hear me?' he thought to himself.
Alex nodded as he projected a 'Yes' to Marcos.
"This shouldn't be possible," Marcos said. "It takes lots of training for even a vampire to be able to read another vampire's mind. You are very special Alex."
'I am?' Alex asked a little worried.
'You are Alex. And no I'm not going anywhere; I'm here for you from now on.' Marcos then hugged Alex tight and kissed his forehead.
'Matthew, do you know what happened to me? All I remember is you looking down at me, and then I woke up in my bed screaming for dad,' Alex said.
'Sweet Alex! I didn't see what happened, but you did. It was your memory. I looked into your mind when I explained to the police what happened. Since then your mind has blocked those memories. I can, if you want, help you remember,' Marcos explained.
'Please, Matthew? I need to know what happened. Help me please?' Alex pleaded.
'This is going to be painful, Alex. Just remember I'm here with you...'
A while later, Marcos and Alex came out of the bedroom just as Bill, Marie and Tommy were really starting to think something was wrong. They hadn't heard a noise from the room for almost an hour.
The door opened, and Alex came into the living room. Marcos stepped in behind him and wound his arms around Alex's waist. Marcos had taken his hat and coat off. It was the first time that any of them could remember him doing so.
'Everyone, first I'd like to say I'm ok.... Matthew has helped me remember what I needed. And, second, I want to ask if Matthew could live with us?' Alex thought to his family.
Tommy stood getting up off the couch and almost ran to Alex and Marcos then hugged them both. "I love you both!" he said. "Hey wait! Umm... Marky did you help Alex do that? And who's Matthew?" he asked confused.
"Nope, that was all Alex here!" Marcos proudly said. "Oh! Matthew Jameson, pleasure to meet you all," he added smiling.
"What's going on?" Bill asked confused.
"Alex, Marcos, what are you two going on about?" Marie was just as confused as her husband.
"Well, Mrs. Davies, after Tommy came in to ask how Alex was and to confirm what you suspected Mr. Davies, I realised I do love your son. And I found out something interesting about him," Marcos said smiling.
'Mum, dad, I'm telepathic! I can read minds and project thoughts,' Alex thought.
"That's... umm... I'm not sure what to say?" Marie said.
"How could this happen? You haven't done something to Alex have you Marcos?" Bill wasn't angry but his question came out sounding more like an accusation.
"MATTHEW HASN'T DONE ANYTHING TO ME!" Alex both screamed and thought, but the thought was only projected towards Bill with a little too much force behind it.
Bill staggered back a few steps and fell onto the couch. "I'm sorry Alex. I didn't mean to sound like I was accusing Marcos of anything; I just don't understand how this is possible," Bill said softly to Alex while holding the sides of his head.
"Dad! I'm so sorry!" Alex cried as he ran to hug his father.
Marcos was surprised. "I'm sorry too, Mr. Davies. I had no idea Alex could do that. I do have a suspicion as to why he can, but I'm going to contact a friend and find out more," Marcos said.
"What about Matthew Jameson?" Tommy asked.
"He is me!" Marcos said. "I was born Matthew Jameson one hundred and nine years ago in London, England. My family came to Australia when I was twelve," he added. Marcos wasn't ready to fill them in on his past just yet.
Alex was sitting on the couch hugging Bill tightly, crying. He had hurt his dad; he didn't mean to but it happened. "I'm okay Alex. I know you didn't mean to do that, its ok" Bill said with a little discomfort.
"If I may, Mr. Davies?" Marcos asked walking toward Bill.
"What?" Bill asked trying to look at Marcos through blurred vision.
"Just hold still a moment. This won't hurt at all" Marcos said as he put his hands on Bill's head, his right hand on the back and his left hand on Bill's forehead. Then Marcos closed his eyes. He searched through Bill's head for the cause of his pain; he found a small blood clot. Using some of the healing magic he had learnt with Elder he made the clot dissolve back into Bill's blood stream.
Bill froze as the pain in his head faded. He took his hands away from his head and looked up at Marcos. "The pain's gone! What ever you did Marcos, thank you!" and he pulled Marcos into a warm hug.
"It seems you should thank Alex for his little outburst. He dislodged a small blood clot in your brain with the force from his projection; I found it and dissolved it back into your blood stream. If he hadn't, you could have died from it Mr. Davies," Marcos explained to him.
Bill looked at Marcos, then Alex, in disbelief. He then grabbed them both into a three way hug thanking them. "Thank you for saving my life!" he said crying.
"Oh, thank you, lord!" Marie stated relieved.
"Marky how did you dissolve it? All you did was hold dad's head!" Tommy asked both confused and fascinated.
"I used some special healing magic I learned from a very old friend," Marcos said a little vaguely.
Bill got up slowly from the couch, letting go of Marcos and Alex. He said "Marcos, I think its time you were going..."
