Angel in Black, Chapter 6
Family matters
The family were quiet. They could all see his logic and that Marcos wasn't exactly happy about having to turn Alex.
Marcos was listening to Alex's heartbeat slowing, getting weaker with every beat. Marcos was in Alex's mind singing his lullaby. Alex's consciousness was starting to cloud; it was time. 'Alex, baby, please drink! I'll be here when you wake up.' Marcos thought as he tore into his own wrist and put it to Alex's mouth. "Oh god, I hope this works..."
Marcos felt Alex draw on his wrist a few times before the remaining strength left his body and he went limp. Marcos broke down; he cradled Alex's body and whimpered, "He's gone, he's gone."
Bill and Marie hugged each other and cried. "My son's dead... Why would anyone do this?" Bill asked sobbing.
"It's my fault! They came here because of me; I'm so sorry!" Marcos cried.
"How could this be your fault Marcos?" Bill asked.
"They were after me! There were two waiting for me at my house. I took care of them, but I didn't know there would be anyone here, I ran as fast as I could but I was still too late," Marcos explained, sobbing.
"YOU'RE the reason my son my son is dead!" Bill said shocked.
"NO! That vampire Tommy opened the door to is the reason your son is dead! But he was here because I was here," Marcos said.
"He saved me... Alex died saving me!" Tommy said in shock.
"Please I need help. I can't just leave Alex here on the floor," Marcos said.
"But he's dead we can't do anything for him now," Marie said.
"He won't stay dead; usually it takes a few days. Then Alex will rise again. Please someone help me get him to the bathroom so I can clean his body?" Marcos pleaded.
"I'll help you Marcos," Bill said.
Bill helped Marcos carry Alex into a bathroom and stripped Alex of his blood soaked clothes; Marcos stripped to his own underwear and easily supported Alex's full weight under the shower, while Bill helped to wash him. Bill gasped at the inch long wound on Alex's chest and the matching one on his back. "Marcos will these be here when he comes back to us?" Bill asked.
"Most likely, I've never heard of a vampire that didn't have a scar from the moment they died and were turned. Mines on my stomach," Marcos told him
Bill couldn't help but wonder, "Why on your stomach?"
"I was living on the streets after my family were murdered. I just fell asleep one night in an alley and I woke up sometime later with this scar... I never knew who turned me. Whoever it was drained me while I was sleeping, I guess they must have felt guilty, or maybe they thought I wouldn't have lasted much longer so they turned me," Marcos said as he showed Bill the bite mark on his left flank.
"That's... Murdered? I'm so sorry Marcos. You have us now... son," Bill said feeling it was the right thing to say to Marcos.
"Son," Marcos sobbed.
"You are part of this family now, Marcos, you are loved. And Alex would never forgive me if I turned you away now," Bill said.
"Okay, sir. I think he is clean now; help me dry him off," Marcos said, and they got out of the shower, dried Alex off, and carried him to his bed. Marcos put his pants back on and laid down next to Alex on the bed, whispering into Alex's ear, "I'm never going to leave you again baby... never again."
Marie had her arms around Tommy, who was still on his knees near where Alex was laid on the floor, the large pool of blood cooling on the tiles. "Mum, what happened? I opened the door... I...I thought it was Marky. Then Alex yelled at me to stop, but it was too late. He pushed me out of the way... he saved me," Tommy said in shock.
"I'm not sure baby, Alex did save you. Marcos saved the rest of us... Alex is gone, Tommy." Marie said.
"No... he can't be," Tommy said shaking his head.
"Marcos and your dad took him to the bathroom to get him cleaned up. I think someone's going to have to clean up this mess," Marie said. She knew she would be cleaning up her son's blood. Marie was trying her hardest not to cry; she had to be strong for Tommy and William.
Bill came back from Alex's room. He had left Marcos in there, he saw Marie comforting Tommy. He quietly placed a hand on her shoulder and said, "Dear, go sit with the Marcos for a moment. I think he could use a mother right now."
"Okay, Will," Marie replied, then got up and went to check on Marcos.
"Tommy... Look at me! This wasn't your fault; Marcos didn't know this was going to happen!" Bill said trying to consol Tommy.
Tommy looked at Bill; they were both crying. "All this strength and I still couldn't protect him," Tommy sobbed.
"You were tricked, Tommy; he caught you off guard. It could easily have been me or your mum who answered the door," Bill answered.
"I guess, dad. But I just can't help but feel helpless," Tommy said softly.
"Try not to think about it too much, Tommy. Just wait! When Alex wakes up, I'm sure he won't be mad. Alex love's you." Bill then kissed Tommy's forehead. "Go be with your brother. I'm going to clean this up."
Marie softly knocked on the bedroom door. "Come in," she heard.
"Marcos, you okay dear?" Marie asked.
"No, I'm not. He's laying here now because of me. If I had never stayed to protect Alex, he would still be alive!" Marcos cried.
"Marcos how could you say that? After all the good you have done for this family! We would have never gotten Tommy, and Alex could have died years ago," Marie said trying to help. She sat on the edge of the bed and cradled Marcos as he cried. "Let it all out baby, mama's here."
"Mum?" Tommy asked softly.
"Come in, dear. I think Marcos needs his brother now," Marie said getting off the bed to leave the room. "I think you need him, too."
"Bill... What are you...? Oh no, Bill!" Marie exclaimed as she dropped to Bill's side. "What were you doing?"
"I was trying to clean up his b..b..blood, but I couldn't. I just couldn't." Bill's face was wet with tears. "My boy is dead!"
"I know, William, I know. But it's out of our hands... We have to trust Marcos and hope to god Alex comes back to us," Marie sobbed she leaned in and put her arms around her distraught husband. "Help me clean this up; we have to be strong for our boys. We'll grieve later."
"Marky, will Alex wake up?" Tommy asked.
"Yeah, Tommy, in a few days," Marcos said.
"Why did this happen?" Tommy asked.
"I don't know, Tommy. The men that were at my house were going to try to kill me. They said they had been watching me for a while. I'm glad he didn't get you too," Marcos said only slightly relieved.
"He almost did get me, Marky. Alex pushed me out of the way... he saved me," Tommy said.
Marcos saw the fresh tears falling from Tommy eyes, "Tommy, don't blame yourself! They were watching me; if anyone's to blame it's me!"
"I couldn't blame you, Marky. I know Alex wouldn't. Alex said you were coming back. When I answered the door I thought 'Marky is that you?' and I heard a reply in my head. I thought it was you," Tommy explained.
"Please, Tommy, don't blame your self. That vampire tricked you. Alex only knew because he could read the other vampires mind. He knew it wasn't me. I was close but not close enough," Marcos said as he put an arm around Tommy and hugged him.
"You don't blame your self for what happened, do you, Marky? It's not your fault," Tommy said.
"I do blame myself. It is my fault Alex is laying here. I was just so happy to have found this family. And you all accept me for who I am. Even knowing what I am. And I screw it up by getting you all involved with something that started over half a century ago. I should have told you all what happened to me years ago," Marcos said.
"Why do you blame your self? What happened?" Tommy asked.
"Tommy, the vampire that came here tonight was sent by the people that murdered my family before I was turned. They have been looking for me for a long time... I lost my temper with them Tommy," Marcos said.
Tommy thought for a moment. "Why?" he asked.
"I was fourteen when my family were murdered; I had been out with some friends exploring the city, we were only gone for the morning. When I got home I found my family. My mum, dad and my two little brothers had been brutally murdered."
"Oh, God!" Tommy said, shocked.
"I went inside our house and found them... I was in shock. There were body parts and blood everywhere. I heard a noise. When I turned around I saw one of my brothers reaching out to me. He was covered in blood and missing a leg. I screamed for help ... but by the time someone came he had died," Marcos sobbed.
"I'm so sorry," Tommy said.
"Jayson, that was my brother, he told me a monster did it. He said it looked like the tigers in the zoo. He then died in my arms. I lost everything that day. I was put into an orphanage after the police cleared me of killing my family. But I couldn't stay there. I ran away as soon as I could. I lived on the streets for a few years barely surviving before I was turned while I slept one night," Marcos said.
Tommy couldn't say anything else, so he just hugged Marcos and let him continue to speak.
Marcos began again, "I was found before I could get into too much trouble by an older vampire, James Larson. He helped me learn what I needed to know and how to hunt, some magic and a few other skills. He took me under his wing and trained me personally. I was shocked when I learned of his position in the Shadow Council and that he would want to help me. But it was almost twenty years before I learned who the monster that murdered my family was."
Tommy wasn't sure who Marcos was talking about but decided not to ask about him yet. "What were these monsters?" he asked instead.
"They were Thylacines: were-thylacines to be exact," Marcos said.
"Tasmanian Tigers? But aren't they extinct?" Tommy asked.
"The ones in captivity are, yes, and most of the normal ones too. The were-thylacines are protected by the council. Like I said, I lost my temper. I had been ordered to find out as much as I could about rumours that the were-thylacines were murdering innocent people, so I worked my way on to their council, where I found detailed files about assassination and kill orders for dozens of people and family's...including my family," Marcos answered.
Tommy looked at the tears trying to fall from Marcos' eyes and said, "You found who killed them?"
"Yes, at the time the man who was given the order was just a gun for hire. When I found out who he was I went mad. I hunted after him for a long time attracting a little too much attention from both the Thylacine Council and the Shadow Council, but I couldn't get close enough. Consul Larson told the Council that I was working under orders, but, when it became too obvious to them that I had disregarded my orders, I had to run from them too. I really caused some problems when I finally thought I had caught up with Jackson, but it was a trap for me. Though, with my training, it wasn't too much of a problem, so I dealt with it," Marcos replied.
"What did the Council do after that?" Tommy asked, listening intently to Marcos.
Marcos explained, "Consul Larson tried his best to help me but eventually even he had to turn his back on me to save his position. He was ordered to declare me a rouge vampire and if anyone from the Council found me they had orders to either put me down or inform the Council of my location. I know now it must have been hard for him to give that order, but I thought he was abandoning me and hated him for it."
"What happened to make the Council order him to do that?" Tommy asked.
"I had followed a lead to a building where Jackson was supposed to be hiding out. When I got there Jackson wasn't there, but his brother and a dozen men were waiting for me. I took them all out with the exception of Sirus; I searched his mind for what I needed but found nothing. He was Jackson's brother, but he was also just a lackey. I couldn't let him live to continue senseless murders. I had seen all the evidence that the Council needed in those files. The thylacines had killed countless innocents for little to no reason, but I made a pretty big mess the Council couldn't over look so they gave the order. I had the evidence to prove what the Thylacines were doing. But I couldn't get it to the Council. Every time I tried there were Thylacine Council agents waiting for me. I tried to mail the files I had in to the Council, but they must have been intercepted."
"So you have been hiding since then?" Tommy asked.
"Yes not only from the Council, but from Jackson too. I killed his brother; he wanted me dead! But I also have his and just about every high level Thylacine Council member's dirty laundry, so to speak. I have done my best to keep ahead of Jackson, usually by moving on every few months. I did manage to disappear for a decade once. And I learnt a lot while I was gone. I've used some of what I learnt then to help me stay hidden these last few years. Until tonight I thought I had lost him. I don't know how he found me, but I look forward to the day that I finally avenge my family," Marcos said.
"What ever happens, Marky, you have my support," Tommy said.
"Thank you, Tommy. That means a lot to me. Still I can't help but blame myself for this. If I had not gone to get my stuff, I would have been here to stop the vampire and Alex wouldn't be lying here like this," Marcos said looking down at Alex.
"He looks like he's asleep. Will he be in pain when he wakes up?" Tommy asked.
"I'm not sure. I tried to comfort him as much as I could when he died. But it was very traumatic. I hope he will be okay," Marcos said worried but relieved for the subject change.
"He will be alright, Marky, I just know it," Tommy said.
"Tommy, can you stay with Alex for a bit? I have to make a call. I know its silly - Alex technically is dead, but I just can't leave him alone," Marcos said.
"I understand, Marky. Go! I'll stay with him," Tommy said.
"Thanks," Marcos said, squeezing Tommy a little, then got off the bed. He took his cell out of his coat and went out the back door.
Marcos dialled a number on his cell. "Cal? Yeah. I was attacked... No, I need to talk to the Consul... My house is gone... I'm FINE... At the Davies house. And Cal? Tell him to come alone. Thanks" Marcos said, ending the call and went back inside.
"Bill, Marie... someone will be here soon. He might be able to help me get the people that caused this. And I would like you to meet him," Marcos said.
"Who is this man?" Bill asked.
"He is someone very powerful who carries a lot of influence with other creatures like me," Marcos said a being a little vague.
"Alright son." Bill said sensing that Marcos didn't want to get into it.
Marcos went back into Alex and Tommy's bedroom and sat on the bed. 'God he is beautiful,' he thought to himself looking at Alex's body covered in just a sheet.
"He is beautiful, Marky," Tommy said.
Marcos was stunned. "What?" he asked.
"You said 'God he is beautiful.' I said he is," Tommy replied.
"Tommy, I didn't say anything. I thought it to myself. You shouldn't have been able to hear it," Marcos said.
"Oh! You don't think it was Alex, do you?" Tommy suggested. Then he and Marcos looked at Alex.
"Could be.... If it is then at the least it means he definitely will wake up. Please don't tell anyone yet Tommy," Marcos said. "Tommy, I'm going to need a few minutes alone when Consul Larson gets here. He should be here soon," he added.
"Okay Marky," Tommy answered.
Marcos walked to the front door and opened it before the Consul could even knock. "Consul Larson, good to see you again," Marcos said. He even hugged the man.
"Marcos? What's wrong?" James was surprised. He had never seen Marcos like this.
"They killed him, sir! My Alex, they killed him!" Marcos sobbed.
"Marcos, calm down, and tell me what's happened," James said.
"It was their leader, the were-thylacines leader. He sent men to find and kill me. They had been watching me long enough to know about my family here. I dispatched the two at my house; you might have heard the sirens? Then I ran back here, but I couldn't get here quick enough," Marcos explained.
"Oh, Marcos, no," James said.
"They sent a vampire assassin; I caught him off guard and incinerated him. But he had already run his blade through Alex. I ... had no choice! He was going to die!" Marcos sobbed.
"Take me to see Alex," Larson said softly.
Marcos stopped him, "In a moment, sir. I would like you to meet the family that has taken me in." Marcos then led Consul Larson into the living room where Bill and Marie were still trying to clean up Alex's blood.
Bill was the first to notice their guest. "William Davies, and this is my wife Marie," he said, extending his hand to shake the strangers.
"James Larson, a pleasure... It's unfortunate it had to be like this," James said, shaking Bill's hand.
"I understand we have you to thank for some indirect help over the years?" Bill said.
James was a little surprised. "How did you know?"
"Marcos hasn't said anything directly, if that's what you're worried about. He has mentioned a contact in the council before. I just assumed it was you," Bill said.
"You are a smart man, Mr. Davies," James started with a smile, but then grimaced at what they had been trying to do. The blood on the tiles was starting to dry and stain the floor. "Let me help you with that," he added, then waved his arm over the pool of blood. It seemed to evaporate, taking the stains with it. "If there is anything I can do for you and your family, please ask."
Marcos looked at the floor where Alex's blood had been; he had never seen anyone do that before. "Bill, Marie can you excuse us a moment. I'm going to take the Consul to meet Tommy and see Alex."
"Okay, son," Bill said. He and Marie sat on the couch comforting each other.
Marcos took James to Alex's room. Tommy was sitting on the edge of the bed waiting. "Sir, I would like you to meet Thomas Jacobs, my brother."
"Consul Larson," Tommy said, as he got up to shake the man's hand.
"Thomas," Larson said. As soon as their hands touched, James knew there was something about Tommy. "You are a special young man Thomas. And you must mean a lot to Marcos for him to call you brother."
"Please, sir, call me Tommy. Marky has been nothing but the best person in my life since he saved me from my dad. I couldn't wish for a better brother," Tommy said.
Marcos stepped forward and hugged Tommy. "I need to talk to the consul alone now, Tommy. I'll call you in a few minutes." And Tommy left the bedroom.
"You have found a very special family here, Marcos.... So this is the young man that has stolen your heart? He is beautiful," James said.
"Yes, sir," Marcos blushed as much as a vampire could.
James could sense the strong mental presence. "Marcos, you said he just died?"
"Yes, couldn't have been more then an hour ago," Marcos said.
"How is this possible? I can sense a very strong mental presence coming from him," James said, amazed.
"Yes, sir, I had just noticed that my self. I was going to ask you about it. I discovered tonight that Alex is telepathic. I suspect all the years his mind suppressed what happened to him somehow turned on the dormant abilities in his mind. But he was able to read my mind. How could a human do that?" Marcos said.
James was stunned. "I'm not to sure; I have never met a human that actually could read minds. At least not well. But a human that can read a vampire's mind, that's impossible," he said.
"And yet he could. But that's not all. Tommy and I discovered just before you arrived that what ever is happening with Alex's mind allowed Tommy to hear my private thoughts. I think it's only when we are close to Alex though," Marcos added.
"Well seems Alex will be a something special when he wakes up. I wouldn't be surprised if he remembers most of what's going on around him when he rises. You should stay close to him. Now tell me what happened tonight!" James said.
Alex couldn't see or hear; he couldn't feel anything. He had died; he remembered the pain, then Matthew telling him to drink. And he heard the lullaby Matthew had sung to him earlier in the night. Then nothing... Now he could sense Matthew and another man, someone older. Tommy had just left and these two were talking about him and what had happened. Alex wanted to reach out to Matthew and tell him to be careful, but he couldn't. Then the lullaby started again.
"I had come here to help Alex; he wasn't talking to anyone. He was depressed and needed help; I helped him remember a few things from his past that he needed to get through. I realised I love him and have for a while," Marcos said as he sat down on the bed next to Alex and started mentally singing his lullaby again. "Then Alex asked me to stay here with him. We went to discuss it with his parents," he added.
"They agreed with him and said yes," James interjected.
"They did. How did you know?" Marcos asked.
"It's obvious Marcos; this family care's a lot about you. So what happened next?" James asked.
"I left and went to get a few things from my home. When I got there, the door had been forced and there were two men waiting in ambush. I tricked them, paralysing the human and luring the other one out. He was one of them, James, one of those murders. I had to force my way into his mind to find out who sent them," Marcos said angrily.
"That's how you found that the leader of the were-thylacines sent them?" James asked.
"Yes, I lost my temper after that and decapitated him, burning the body and draining his human associate. I left them to burn in my house. I came back here as fast as I could. But I didn't make it in time. I saw the door open as a vampire drew his short sword, then I saw him stab it into Alex. I was so angry I didn't even wait for him to turn around. I used the incinerate spell and burned him to ashes," Marcos explained.
"Then you rushed to try to help Alex here and found there was nothing that could be done and decided that you couldn't let go?" James asked.
"Not exactly. Alex asked me to help him. But you are right, I couldn't let go, not now that I know I love him and he feels the same. And now we are here," Marcos said.
"Well Marcos I must go, I will see what I can do. You look after this one and I'll be in touch." James then quietly left.
Marcos again lay down beside Alex still singing his lullaby. 'I hope you know I'm here baby. I'll keep singing for you til you wake up,' he thought to Alex.
In the dark void of nothing where Alex's mind was currently stuck, he was peacefully listing to his angel sing. 'I know Matthew my love,' he thought.
Bill, Marie and Tommy were sitting on the couch; no words were spoken they just sat there. 'Goodbye Consul Larson,' Tommy thought as James quietly slipped out the door.
'Goodbye, Thomas, it was nice to meet you and your family,' James replied as he left.
Tommy hugged Bill and said, "Consul Larson just left. I know it's going to be hard, but we should all try to get some sleep. I'm going to go to bed. Good night I love you both." He kissed them each on the forehead and went to his and Alex's bedroom.
"Bill you know he's right there is nothing we can do. We might as well go to bed," Marie said.
"I know Marie. It's just hard to sleep knowing that Alex is in there dead," Bill said.
"Bill, Marie could you come with me a minute?" Marcos said softly taking each of their hands and leading them to Alex and Tommy's bedroom.
"What are you doing Marcos?" Marie asked.
"I want to tell you all that James and I think Alex can hear our thoughts. Alex has a very strong mental presence, we both felt it. Tommy even noticed it as we sat here earlier. Thanks to Alex, Tommy could hear my thoughts," Marcos explained.
"What does that mean?" Marie asked.
"We think that Alex is aware of our thoughts, that he can hear what we are thinking when we are close to him. If you want to tell him anything, just sit close by and think what you want to say, I'm pretty sure he will hear," Marcos explained.
Alex sensed his family all close by him. 'Alex we love you son come back to us soon,' Bill thought.
'Wake up soon sweetie,' Marie thought.
'Alex, I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you. I hope you can forgive me. I love you,' Tommy thought.
'We are all here for you Alex. Come back to me soon baby,' Marcos thought.
'I love you all,' Alex thought to himself.
