Angel in Black, Chapter 9
Preparation
'Today's the day. Marcos and Calvin should be able manage without my help, and they have a surprise in Thomas. I hope Calvin has told Marcos about his relation to Thomas by now,' James thought to himself as he looked at a few reports.
"Sir we have a report of Thylacine Councillor Jackson planning to attack a group of humans," Leon said, walking into James' office.
"Yes, Leon, I know already," James cut in. "We cannot do anything about it, HE is protected," James finished, the distaste for Jackson obvious in his voice.
"Sir, also... Calvin has disappeared," Leon added.
"I know that too, Leon, just keep me informed," James said.
"Sir," Leon finished and left the room.
'Damn it! I can't sit here and do nothing,' James thought to himself in frustration.
Sunday started slowly for everyone at the Davies home. Calvin had stood watch all night, allowing everyone else to sleep or rest.
Marcos didn't sleep much; he was too concerned about the coming day. He stayed by Alex's side, mentally singing and talking to him through most of the night. Marcos could feel something different with Alex as the sun rose. Alex wasn't waking yet; it was still too early. But sometime today he would rise.
'Not long now Alex! Sometime today you will wake up, and no matter what I will be here waiting for you,' Marcos thought to Alex.
In his own mind Alex was still trapped, unable to let anyone know what he felt or what he was thinking. 'I can't wait Matthew, I miss you so much,' Alex thought as he felt he was slowly going crazy. He felt if he was stuck like this much longer he wouldn't be the same person anymore. That scared Alex more than when he thought he was dying.
Tommy slept for a few hours; he had been exhausted after his intense training with both Marcos and Calvin. Around four in the morning he woke feeling rested and wide awake. Tommy decided to get some training in before anyone else woke up. It was a very warm morning so he didn't bother putting on more than his shorts; he then went outside taking his katana with him.
Calvin watched Tommy walk into the yard and start practicing some moves, leaving his katana in its box on the ground. His movements were so graceful, so fluid. Calvin was completely taken by the beauty of Tommy's motion! He didn't want to disturb Tommy, so he stayed back and watched him for a few minutes then went about checking the house.
Bill and Marie woke up sometime later to Tommy cooking a rather large breakfast. "What's all this?" Marie asked surprised.
"I was hungry," Tommy shrugged.
"Seems given Tommy's nature and what we woke up in him yesterday, he needs to eat more," Calvin said walking into the kitchen.
"A faster metabolism will do that to you," Marcos grinned, following Calvin in. "You're probably going to be a little warmer now too," Marcos added laughing.
"Morning, cousin Marky!" Tommy laughed as Marcos walked up and put an arm around his shoulder.
"What are you talking about, cousin?" Marie asked confused.
"Marky is my cousin, and I'm part were-wolf," Tommy said nonchalantly.
"When did all this happen?" Marie asked even more confused.
"Obviously a long time ago," Marcos smiled. "Cal told me yesterday, and I had to tell Tommy. He is the only biological family I have left," Marcos explained.
"He's also part were-wolf. Not enough to turn into one but enough to give him a physical advantage, and cute pointed teeth," Calvin giggled then realised what he said and blushed slightly. "Ah... did I say cute? I meant... um," Calvin stammered.
"Cal, stop talking. We get it, you like him," Marcos laughed putting a hand on Calvin's shoulder making him blush slightly harder.
Tommy smiled, ignoring Calvin's slip, and showed them all his now slightly longer canine teeth. "That's amazing!" Marie said.
At that moment, Calvin noticed Marcos starting to cry. "Marc what's wrong?" Calvin asked.
They all looked at the man they had come to call friend, son and brother. "Nothing... I just never realised how much I missed this. I haven't just talked at breakfast like this since my family were murdered. It's just so overwhelming," Marcos said sobbing.
Bill and Marie joined Tommy in hugging Marcos. "We love you to Marcos," Marie said teary eyed.
"I love you all too! I just hope we can get through today," Marcos said stepping back from them, his mood darkening. "We have a lot to do today. I want Tommy to train a little more, Cal, if you could help him with that?" Marcos asked.
"Of course, Marc," Calvin said. He was more than happy to spar with Tommy; it wouldn't really be training as both Marcos and Calvin knew Tommy could already match them both in a fair fight.
"Thanks Cal. Tommy, don't you give Cal too much trouble," Marcos said winking at Tommy.
Tommy blushed thinking of the trouble they could get into. "I'll try not too Marky," Tommy said with a sly grin.
"What about us?" Bill asked.
"Well, Bill, I actually want to do some training with you this morning. And Marie, to be honest, there isn't much you can do to fight, but your nurse's training might be needed. Who knows what's going to happen? But until your needed I would like you to stay with Alex. He will be waking up today sometime, and I don't want him to be alone when he does," Marcos said directing them.
"I guess that's about all I can do. Just don't you dare get hurt! Human, I can patch up, but vampire I have no idea!" Marie said trying to add her own humour to lighten the mood a little.
"They are moving so fast, how do you keep up with them?" Bill asked, watching Calvin and Tommy train on the other side of the back yard.
"Vampire, remember?" Marcos laughed.
"Funny," Bill said glaring at Marcos. "So what do you need me to train with you for?" he asked.
"Actually, I want to see how skilled you are," Marcos said.
"But I haven't trained with anything in years," Bill said slyly.
"Ah, but you have trained," Marcos said assuming.
"A little," Bill grinned.
Marcos took a sword that was smaller than Tommy's Katana out of his bag and handed it to Bill. "I want you to attack me with that Wakizashi much like I had Tommy do; I will only block your attacks at first but I want you to keep attacking," Marcos explained.
"Alright, Marcos, lets give this a go," Bill said, holding the Wakizashi at his side.
"Bill, I warn you, that blade is an extremely sharp silver alloy. If you manage to hit me with it I'm really going to feel it," Marcos said. Bill looked at him worried for a moment but it passed when Marcos smirked.
Marcos again using his favoured hunting knives stood ready, waiting for Bill to attack. Bill took a stance with the sword pointing out to his right then he launched himself at Marcos...
Across the yard, Tommy froze in the middle of attacking Calvin and turned to look at his cousin and adopted father. Calvin panicked for a moment thinking he had actually injured Tommy; he was relieved when he followed Tommy's gaze to Marcos and Bill.
They were on the other side of the good sized rear yard as to not distract each other, yet Tommy still stopped to watch just as Bill was about to attack Marcos.
Marcos stood like before with Tommy, waiting until the last possible moment to block Bill's attack. He was surprised when just as he was prepared to block, Bill changed his movements and attacked from a different angle. Marcos was just able to move in time to block the attack; if Bill were as fast as a vampire Marcos could have been in serious trouble. Bill skidded to a stop, turning to charge at Marcos again; he knew that last attack wouldn't work a second time, at least not on Marcos.
This time he thought something a little more advanced wouldn't hurt. He charged Marcos, sword facing the ground, and at the last second feigned a change of direction as he did before, then he jumped and flipped over Marcos's head and landed behind him.
Marcos watched Bill leap into the air in front of him; he barely had enough time to drop to the ground as Bill's blade swept past the top of his head, right where his neck had been. "Stop!" Marcos yelled.
Bill immediately stopped and brought the sword to his side, "What? Did I injure you Marcos?" Bill asked concerned.
"No, I'm fine. But I am impressed! Even Tommy wasn't able to get that close in two attempts," Marcos said smiling.
"Really? I had no idea! I've tried to keep in shape over the years; I usually go to the gym before and after work everyday. And a few times a week I use sword length sticks to practice my movements, I was pretty quick back in the day," Bill explained.
"Well, you still are damn quick. I'm not the first vampire you have battled with am I, Bill?" Marcos asked.
"No, not exactly. When I was in the army there were a few highly classified missions involving rogue vampires or were-wolves. We were given our orders to find and take out the creatures with minimal collateral damage. Because of my previous training with swords and small blades and my proficiency with small arms, I was chosen to lead most of those missions; I was also the fastest in our squad. I thank all the training I did as a child for that," Bill explained.
"Well, that explains a lot, especially why you didn't seem to be so surprised when I told you what I was. Well I think you can definitely handle yourself in a fight, maybe even against Tommy, though I wouldn't rely on speed too much. After all you are an old man! And the team that's coming here are going to be A LOT faster than you," Marcos said. When Bill blinked Marcos moved and was right behind him. "If they really wanted to they could kill you in an instant," Marcos warned.
Tommy watched as Bill jumped over Marcos' head and landed behind him and swung in a move that would have killed anyone else. Marcos dropped to the ground and yelled stop, and Tommy knew something was up.
Calvin saw everything Tommy had; he was surprised at how quickly Bill changed his moves and attacks to try and throw Marcos off and at how well it worked. "Wow, I've never seen a human get that close to Marc before," Calvin said surprised.
"Do you think we should help?" Tommy asked sounding concerned.
"No, looks like they can handle each other," Calvin said grinning.
"Let's get back to it then," Tommy smirked.
"How about we really work up a sweat?" Marcos asked.
"Alright. Just remember I'm not a young man anymore," Bill said smirking.
Laughing loudly Marcos said, "Says the man who just jumped and flipped over six feet in the air! Bill I want you to block or deflect my attacks or try your best."
Smiling Bill said, "Alright, Marcos, you're on!" Then he took up a defensive stance and waited for Marcos to attack.
Marcos took a moment to plan his offensive; he knew Bill would most likely anticipate a head on assault so he had something a little more indirect in mind.
"What are you waiting for Marcos? Not scared of a little old human are you?" Bill taunted.
"You're enjoying this a little too much, I think, Bill," Marcos smiled. Ditching his hunting knives for another Wakizashi similar to the one Bill was using, Marcos took an offensive position and glared at Bill. "Ready?" he asked, to which Bill nodded.
Marcos charged Bill. Just as he was within striking distance, he vanished and reappeared behind Bill. Bill instantly knew Marcos was trying to blindside him and spun around to meet Marcos's blade. "Saw that one coming did you old man!" Marcos laughed.
"I saw you do that to Tommy yesterday, Marcos! Don't think your magic tricks are going to work so easily on me," Bill said, then threw a small fireball at Marcos catching him completely by surprise. Marcos stumbled back and barely had enough time to bring his blade up to block Bill. He pushed Bill back and regained his footing, then launched his own attack without using any magic or tricks and forced Bill to the ground using brute strength. "Alright, I give! You're stronger then I am," Bill said looking a little defeated.
Marcos relaxed a little and leaned down to help Bill up off the ground. "You're a worthy opponent Bill," Marcos said offering his hand to the man.
Tightly gripping Marcos hand Bill pulled him self up and said, "Fights not over yet, son." Releasing Marcos's hand, Bill spun around and brought the blade to Marcos's neck, stopping just as it contacted his skin.
Marcos quickly pulled away from the silver blade as it hissed on contact with his neck. Holding his hand over the small cut he swore, "Shit! I forgot how much silver hurt!" He held his hand over the cut and chanted a simple spell. The wound stopped bleeding and started to mend itself but much slower then it normally would.
"That'll teach you for calling me an old man!" Bill laughed.
"I'm glad you're on our side Bill. That was a good ruse; make me think I defeated you then attack as I tried to help you up. Whoever trained you did a damn good job," Marcos said.
"Thanks, Marcos. One of the guys in my squad was a wizard. He was there mainly as a specialist on any missions where a creature of some kind was a target. A few missions in, when we were after a particularly nasty vamp, he threw a decent sized fireball at it with some good results. Me and a few of the guys saw and wanted to know how he did it. After the mission he explained that he was a wizard and he showed us some of what he could do. Most of us wanted to learn how to do what he could, but he said not all of us would be able to. It was myself and two others that were able to even attempt what he taught us. The most I could manage was a small fireball, as you saw nothing that could do any real damage but enough for a small diversion. He also taught me that when dealing with your kind the best defence is anticipating what your opponent is going to do and not let them do it, so no quarter is given and no time to recover. Attack or die Ty use to say," Bill explained as he thought about his old friend.
"What was this wizard's name?" Marcos asked thinking for a moment.
"Tyson... Lt. Tyson Smith," Bill said.
"Never heard of him," Marcos said.
"I have!" Calvin said as he and Tommy walked over having finished their session. "He use to do covert work for the Council working with the human military hunting rogue vampires, feral were-wolves, zombies and a few other's. He stopped working with humans about ten years ago," Calvin explained.
"Well that explains why I haven't heard of him. I was out of touch for a while," Marcos said.
"Tyson had a small disagreement with the Consul. Apparently he was ordered to hunt down a rogue, but he returned and refused to complete the mission. After he discussed it loudly with the Consul, the mission was dismissed, and the Lt. went to work for the Consul directly," Calvin said.
"Ten years?" Marcos asked, curious.
"Yes, give or take a few months," Calvin replied.
"Do you know where this rogue was? Where Tyson was sent?" Marcos asked.
Thinking for a moment Calvin said, "Here, actually! Marc I had no idea."
"Well, there's the proof I needed. Seems James has been helping me for a while. I'm glad, I wasn't looking forward to a fight with him," Marcos said relieved.
"How about we take a break?" Bill suggested.
"Good idea, lunch break. Well at least for you and Tommy," Marcos laughed as the four men walked into the house.
Marie had anticipated Tommy and even her husband wanting a large lunch after their morning's workout; they would need it. While Bill and Tommy ate, Marcos washed up then sat with Alex. The first thing he noticed was a very faint hum. He couldn't hear it so much as he sensed it, and Alex was slightly warmer. 'Not long now,' he smiled to himself. Everyone in the house heard Marcos's thought, and they all smiled along with him.
Calvin sat next to Tommy while he ate lunch, carefully placing his arm around Tommy's waist and stroking his side. It appeared that no one noticed him doing so, and Tommy didn't seem to mind so he continued.
Tommy leaned in close to Calvin's ear and whispered, "You know if you keep doing that you're going to get me excited?"
"We wouldn't want that now would we?" Calvin whispered back as he continued to stroke Tommy's side.
"You know, boy's, if you want to do that, there is a perfectly good couch in the living room!" Marie laughed, making both of them blush, and Calvin quickly remove his arm from Tommy's waist.
"She was only kidding Calvin; we don't mind if you boys want to do whatever," Bill said making them blush a little harder.
"Tommy, you're a young man! We can't tell you who you should or shouldn't see. Just to be careful, live your life and be happy," Marie said.
"Yes, and if being with a vampire means you are going to be happy, who are we to dispute that? We are proud of you son, just as we are proud of Alex," Bill said.
"Mum, Dad," Tommy said teary eyed and smiling.
Calvin smiled, looked at Bill then Marie and back to Tommy. He placed his arm back around Tommy's waist and resumed his gentle stroking of Tommy's stomach.
James walked into the moderately sized office looking for Lt. Smith. "Smith?" He asked looking around seeing no one.
"Yes, Consul?" said the youngish sounding voice.
"Where are you lieutenant?" James asked.
"Here sir," said Tyson reappearing in front of the Consul.
"I have a small task which I need your help with," James said, then proceeded to explain what he was planning.
Marcos was laying beside Alex, deep in thought about the events of recent days: The assassin that attacked Alex, finding out about Tommy being his cousin, and learning that his mentor had indeed been protecting him in some small way. He was roused from his thoughts by a phone ringing. Realising it was his, he answered, "Hello?"
"Marcos! My child, how are you?" asked the voice on the line.
"Elder? How are you able to call me?" Marcos asked completely surprised.
"Our tribe isn't completely savage Marcos, we have tried to keep up with the times! Well, some of our tribe have," Laughed Elder.
"Elder, is there something wrong? You've never tried to contact me in almost fifty years?" Marcos asked with concern.
"Well, son, I just wanted you to know of the trouble heading your way, but you already know about that. And to wish you luck," Elder said.
"Thank you sir! I wish I had your help," Marcos admitted.
"Marcos," Elder began more seriously. "You have been trained by some of the oldest and most skilled vampires on this continent, you have allies in Calvin and Bill, and your love will rise sooner then you think. You're not going up against an army, which I know you have faced before," Elder said in his best fatherly tone trying to boost Marcos' confidence.
"It's different this time. I'm afraid... I can't loose them," Marcos said quietly.
"You won't, Marcos; they are more than capable of defending themselves. I must be going now, but we will be seeing each other soon," the elder said, ending the call. Marcos sat for a few moments thinking about what Elder said.
"Consul, sir, there is a call for you from... a... well I don't know exactly; he wouldn't give a name," Leon nervously said.
"I'll take the call Leon," James said.
"Yes sir, transferring it to you now," Leon said as he put the call through.
Picking up the phone James thought 'I don't have time for this.' He cleared his throat and said "Hello, this is Consul Larson."
"Yes Consul. I don't believe you know who I am, but I know you, and I feel now is the time for us to meet," said the older sounding man on the line.
"I'm sorry, but who are you?" James asked.
"I'm Elder. I'm the leader of one of the many aboriginal tribes around the country. The other tribal leaders and I agree that it is time we discussed our joining the Shadow Council," Elder said.
James was speechless for a moment. He knew about the tribes but thought that they didn't know about the Council. Recovering he said, "Elder I would be honoured to discuss such matters with you, but there is currently a situation that requires my direct attention. After that is resolved I would like," but he was cut off.
"The situation with Marcos does NOT require your attention; he has all the help he needs. He knows of the help you have indirectly provided over the years and accepts that you were not able to do more because of your position. All he requires from you is your support," Elder said with a tone of authority.
"How do you know that?" James asked surprised.
"Marcos told me much of you James. He has much admiration for you; for forty years you were the closest thing to a father he had. When he came to me and my people he was tired and angry; we sheltered him, fed him and I personally trained him. When he left us, he was rested but still held a lot of anger towards the Council for allowing the thylacine's to continue getting away with what happened to his human family and others, and towards you personally for not assisting him," Elder explained.
"YOU are the one who helped him! In that case I feel I must thank you for taking care of him," James said gratefully. "Marcos is like a son to me. It hurt me so much not being able to help him more back then, but I will not sit idly by this time!" he added.
"I understand, James; if he were my child I would want to do more. As it is, I would be there in a heartbeat if I thought he couldn't help himself, but one of my abilities is foresight, so I know what's coming for him and his family, even you James," Elder said again surprising James.
"Are you some kind of oracle?" James asked.
"Oh, no not an oracle, just an old and very skilled vampire; I learned a lot of what I know from my sire and the rest from others like young Marcos.... Before you ask, no, I will not tell you what I know, for it could alter the outcome," Elder said.
"So there is nothing you can tell me?" James asked.
"The young are always curious!" laughed Elder. "No, there's nothing I can say that would help. I need to prepare for my journey; it will be a few days but everything should be resolved there by the time I arrive," Elder said.
"Well, I look forward to meeting you in person, Elder. I hope you will be my guest here," James said.
"I'd be honoured Consul.... One last thing, Make sure nothing happens to Alex Davies," Elder proclaimed, and the call ended.
James took a moment to reflect on his conversation with Elder. 'Incredible,' James thought to himself.
James then dialled a number. "Lieutenant Smith, change of plans. We will not be going in to assist Marcos; instead we will secure the permitter around the house and provide backup only if needed," James instructed.
"Understood sir! Anything else?" Tyson responded.
"No, lieutenant, that is all. Be ready to move out in twenty minutes," James said ending the call.
Tommy had just finished helping Marie put away the dishes from their late lunch, and he and Calvin were sitting on the couch in the living room enjoying a quiet moment. "Calvin, how have we gotten to this point? Are we moving too fast?" Tommy said out of nowhere, catching Calvin off guard.
"We have only known each other a day! It's too soon to say what we have, but I really like you and want to find out where us will lead," Calvin said.
"I like you too, Calvin, and I want to see where this leads as well," Tommy said, weaving his fingers between Calvin's and gently squeezing his hand giving him a smile.
Bill and Marie sat on a bench in the back yard looking out over the garden, just sitting and thinking about their family. "What's going to happen to us after all this, Will?" Marie asked, staring off into the distance.
"What do you want to happen dear? Everything that's happened the past few days has brought this family closer than I thought possible. I couldn't imagine our boys wanting to leave, and if they did I think we would be going with them," Bill said as he took Marie's hands in his and turned to look her in the eyes.
"I want our family to be happy, Will. Whatever happens," Marie said smiling at her husband.
Marcos sat on Tommy's bed looking at Alex lying there, studying the young man that had been the centre of his life for the last twelve years, reflecting on everything he and his family had been through. "So much has happened in the last few days Alex," Marcos said as he moved to sit next to Alex. Slipping his hand under Alex's and gently holding it, Marcos continued, "I've missed your smile and just staring into your eyes. I love you Alex."
"I love you too, Matthew," came Alex's almost whispered reply.
