This was some sick comedy, or something. The seagulls chirped happily in the air, the sun gleamed playfully off the water. But everything was so wrong.
Andrea came up the stairs, while I was still sitting there, staring off into the sea. Oh God, Oh God, Oh God.
"Jason, are you okay? I... I saw Eric leaving... He looked very.... Anyway, are you okay?" She looked up at me, appropriate level of concern on her face.
"No," I laughed. It was a dry bitter sound. "And neither is he. Asshole."
"What happened?"
"What do you want, Andrea? We're barely even friends."
"I..." She looked a bit hurt. "I just want to help."
"Fine." I sighed. No reason to take this out on her, even if she was probably in it just to enjoy the drama. "He broke up with me. Because he's 'going straight'."
"Oh," She bit her lip, then sat down next to me. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know."
"No, you didn't. But don't feel bad. Neither did he, until his daddy came along to remind him how repressed he is. I was 'just a phase' and He was only 'getting it out of his system'."
She kept quiet and put her arm around my shoulder. I felt tears wet my face, but I managed to control myself. I wasn't going to break down sobbing in front of Andrea. I barely knew her, despite what great friends she suddenly thought we were. I didn't really have anyone.
********************A knock at my door. Andrea, more than likely, again. Come to feed off of fresh misery. Okay, that's a bit harsh. She was probably just here to help. She had good intentions, despite the fact that they annoyed the crap out of me.
I was on my way to drunk, and I'd just finished my third Smirnoff Spin, which was this surprising tasty Lemonade and Vodka combo that my sister had given me a six pack of when I turned eighteen. I never really got around to drinking them. I'm not a huge drinker. And I never really felt okay drinking on my own. But, circumstances had... changed a bit.
Andrea's knocking was starting to give me a headache. I got up and grabbed the handle of my sliding door, and pulled the curtain with it as I opened it.
"I found your book."
Oh shit. It was Jared, standing there. He was in board shorts and a light blue T-shirt. God, he was hot. But then again, the last hot guy left me the mess I am right now.
Fuck my damn hormones!
Oh shit, I thought, I looked like crap. My eyes were probably still red from crying. Crap. I hate it when people see me like this.
"Um, Thanks." I quickly grabbed the book from him. Maybe a little too quickly, I just wanted him gone so I could be alone again.
"No problem. I'm...uh... sorry, really sorry, again... for losing it." He stepped back, but only slightly, and fixed me with his gaze. "Can I...uh... come in? I had to walk here. Not all of us are old enough to have car's and licenses already."
"Um, yeah. Sure. Come in." And he did.
"Whoa! Nice place. Is this all yours?"
"Yeah." I have him a half-smile. It was the best I could do. "The rest of the family lives in the main house. I got lucky though."
"Hmmm. Got lucky? I'll bet." He winked, flopping down on my bed. "Seems like the perfect place to bring some strange."
I just laughed, the best laugh I could muster anyway. He didn't know the half of it.
'Strange' was definitely one way to put it. Eric was definit- Oh, god. I couldn't even think about him. Not with Jared there. I didn't want him to see me melt into a blubbering mess.
"Um.... Do you want something to drink?" Damn mom's lesson in hospitality. Couldn't I just ask him to go away?
Reluctantly, I went over to my mini-fridge and opened it, and looked inside.
"Not unless you have something alcaholic." He smirked at his own joke.
I grabbed a smirnoff and threw it down on the bed next to him, and grabbed another one for myself before closing the fridge.
"Dude! You have booze in your room? That's pretty awesome." He smiled, twisted the top off and had a sip.
I did the same, but gulped a quarter of the bottle down in one shot.
"So...uh.... anything up with you?"
"Nah, not much." Like I was going to pour my heart out for a question phrased like that. That deserved an answer like 'Yeah, I got this totally sweet skateboard' or 'Yeah, I saw this awesome movie' - not 'Yeah, I've just been dumped and had my faith in the strongest human being I knew completely shattered, as well as falling back into an abyss of utter loneliness.'
Okay, maybe that's a bit dramatic. But it's how I felt, at the moment.
"So, are..uh.. you going to Sarah's party tonight?"
"No. I'm not really in the mood to go anywhere right now."
"Ah, that's too bad. Her house is right down the road from you." Oh great, I get to have background noise with my misery tonight. "I'm... uh... going there now. Her and I are ... uh... dating now. She's awesome. I sort of like her a lot. She kind of makes me forget about every other person I've ever been with. You know when you meet that girl, and you just know she's the one?"
"Not really." I almost smiled at the irony. It had been a while since a girl had made me feel anything. "How long have you been together?"
"Like... two months. We..uh.." He bit his lip. "We kind of hooked up at Caitlin's party, and we've been seeing each other pretty much every day since then." Ah, right, Caitlin's party. The night I was... what? heartbroken?... the night I met Eric....
Eric....
It really put the whole issue about being upset over the fact that nothing happened with Jared that night in context.
I had stopped talking. I didn't really trust myself to speak at the moment. He quietly, and quickly, finished his drink.
"So... I...uh..." he looked at a loss for words - even more so than usual. "...better go. Sorry about that book thing. Just glad I could find YOUR book - you didn't want copies of my notes." We both smiled. His handwriting is even worse than mine. And the work, well... was probably a lot worse.
"It's fine. Thanks for coming Jared. Bye." I basically shuffled him out of the room then. Was it a bit rude? Maybe. Did I care right now? Not at all.
Once he left, I flopped down on the bed again. I wasn't in the mood for people. At least not ones I was barely even friends with. And they all seemed to be on the prowl lately.
