Chapter Eleven – Baba Yaga
As soon as we were through the portal it closed behind us and we were in the village in the valley near the school. If I remember rightly its name is...
"Arzú? What the fuck are we doing in Arzú?" asked Lance.
"Maybe the castle's protection drove us here" explained Luzeiza looking up. I looked at what she was looking at. There was the castle, built on the highest peak of this mountain chain. We were near the river that crossed the valley. The Looking Glass river was so deep and the water so clean that it reflected perfectly.
We walked through the town's square heading to the castle. There was an old blind woman sitting on the floor selling flowers with a sign that said `Each flower 1/10th of a Denir'. Denir is the money used by magic society. The coins are made of electrum which is a natural alloy of made of silver and gold. She had beautiful flowers and so cheap, I noticed many people gave her money, but didn't take any flowers. She was a beggar. Her skin had many marks and scars. I walked towards her.
"Do you like my flowers?" she asked.
"Yes I do," I stated. "They are beautiful flowers."
"Not as beautiful as the one you have in your jacket pocket though."
"How do you know?" I asked.
"I can sense her...a beautiful blue rose. I can also feel the bud in your other pocket."
I put a ten Denir coin on her palm and gave her the rose bud. "Please plant that bud. Make it grow big and beautiful for me," I said.
The woman said, "I will, your majesty." I looked shocked. "I know who you are. My name is Arantxa. I will not fail you sire." I nodded and walked over to my friends.
"You gave her the bud didn't you?" asked Luzeiza with a smile. I nodded, "Arantxa is a great woman. A black witch cursed her and killed all of her family."
"What kind of curse?" I asked.
"She'll be forever blind and old. She also lost her magic. Only a little green magic is left. She's the perfect person to plant that bud," added Will. I smiled and looked back at Arantxa. She was smiling, I smiled too and nodded.
A short time later we arrived at an elevator on the mountain. It was an old one made of wood and ropes. It took us most of the way up the mountain, but the rest of the way we had to climb using stairs carved into the rock. The school seemed the same as we had left behind. So secure and homelike. The Dean and my Grandmothers were waiting for us in the room of the lost steps and we talked for a while.
Later we went to our rooms to rest, gratefully I showered and slept a much needed sleep after which we went to eat and then left to see Baba Yaga the next morning. There is twelve hours difference between Washington and Russia, as Baba Yaga is only at home at night we had to leave in the morning. We used a portal that Dean Ashwood opened for us and moments later we were in the woods. I felt weird in this place, but a good kind of weird. My sisters stayed at the castle along with professor Will and Luzeiza.
"I feel a tickling," I said
"That's your magic being recognized by this land. Lands as old as this have their own magic. You are descended from Russia so your magic is part of this place," explained Sarah being the nerd that she was. Something was different about her now. For some reason she was even more quiet and she wasn't looking at me. I had noticed that this started after we passed the test of Yerim
"What is wrong with her?" I asked Syre when no one was listening.
"You don't know do you?"
"What I don't know?" I asked confused.
"Oh men! You wouldn't notice even if your life depended on it! She likes you!" Syre was a little annoyed with me. I noticed she wasn't only speaking about me as she was looking elsewhere.
"Hey it is not my fault! I am gay remember. I don't have to understand women..."
"Ok..." she said calming down. "It's just that I don't know how else to get Theo's attention. I've dropped enough hints for god's sake!"
"Oh please! Just go to him and tell him. We're men! We don't have fucking antennas to receive little signals," I said.
"Yeah right" she said and walked a little faster as I joined the rest of the group.
"So, where are we going?" I asked.
"A friend of mine will show us the way." said MJ.
Looking shocked Stella asked, "Who is this friend of yours?"
"Me." said a figure in the darkness. When he came out I could see him clearly. He was very handsome and had dark hair and pitch black eyes. He was dressed in black with a pair of dark wings. He was a shadow, a dark fairy.
Stella gasped, "Rocco."
"Stella," he said with a cute voice, "how have you been?"
"Good, no thanks to you!"
"I left for your own good," he said.
"Look, just help us and let get this over with," stated Stella. She was obviously uncomfortable because of the direction that the conversation was taking. As we began to walk Rocco said we weren't that far from Baba Yaga's house.
On our way there we saw a black knight, The Night. We arrived shortly after and there it was a little house with chicken legs, an iron fence with skull torches surrounded the place. We waited until we saw an old lady flying in a black mortar.
"There she is, the white lady of Death and rebirth. The safe-keeper of the waters of life and death." said Alexander. "She is one of the most powerful witches in all history. She is like the Smaug for dragons, or the Voldemort for wizards."
Sometimes I forget we're still in the human world where people know about Harry Potter and Lord of the rings. I should tell you something, the wizards in Harry Potter are not wizards at all...they are just a bunch of weird kids shouting a load of ... weird stuff.
Baba Yaga arrived in front of us and with a crack of her fingers the mortar disappeared. "Hello Baba Yaga. We are..." started John.
"I know who you are," she said in a very accented English. "I will speak with him and with him alone." she said.
"No you won't," protested John. "We go in with him, or we go!" he shouted.
She smiled, "Well then, go. You are here because you need me."
"Don't worry guys. I will talk to her alone."
"No you won't!" protested John and MJ at the same time.
"Yes I will! It is my past and I decide whatever I want." I looked back as Baba Yaga turned to face her house.
"Little house, little house, turn your back to the forest and face me," the moment she said that her house turned, bent its legs and the door was at our level. "Now come in darlings," said Baba as the door opened. We all got in as the house rose up once again. The house inside looked like a normal cabin in the woods. "The rest of you will wait in here," she said pointing to a living-room. Pointing to me she said, "You will come with me." I followed her and we passed through to the dining room where a whole cow was roasted on the table.
"You are planning a feast or something."
She laughed, "No, that is just a snack. In another time that would have been a human, but a recent change to the laws forbids me to eat humans now. Such a shame! I preferred teenagers you know; they're tender but substantial at the same time."
A chill ran through my spine. "Sorry, I didn't know."
She sat on the table and ripped a leg from the roasted cow. She bit it and began to eat. Then with w full mouth she said, "I am very hungry so it's better that we start our business now."
I showed her the rose and she smiled, "I'm here to ask you some questions. Where do I come from? What am I?"
"It is better if I show you." She said clicking her fingers again. A mug made from a skull appeared in front of me filled with a steaming liquid. "Drink that! BUT first sit in that rocking chair." I put the rose back in my pocket and sat in the rocking chair. Happy she now added, "Rock..." As she paused I looked at her strange "Rock...back and forth. If you stop, I know you will be dead." She never stopped eating.
I did as she told me to. I drank the liquid. I was wrong. It wasn't steaming hot at all, it was cold...Very, very cold and it tasted like iron. I kept rocking. The last thing I remember was dropping the cup and hearing it's sound against the floor. After that all was black.
I was on a battlefield and somewhere in the battle I saw Ferim fighting. I knew that this was the last fight of the blood war. I just knew. Somehow the time passed and all ten gods were standing on the battlefield covered in blood, standing over the corpses of fallen minor gods and celestials.
"This has to stop," said Lorei - goddess of life.
"This will stop when my brother surrenders," said Asdimir - god of light.
"Oh brother, please let us alone. We have not harmed anyone," said Ferim.
"What you are doing is immoral," shouted Asdimir.
"We are Gods! We are above morality," protested Iromir.
"No, that's why our fathers are in cages."
"No. Our fathers are in cages because of their lack of love. We've lost many siblings and offspring, lovers and friends." said Sairei and then she knelt before Asdimir. "Please Asdimir. I beg you to stop this nonsense."
"Oh sister. If something is greater than my love for you is my hate towards Iromir. I know what is happening and what he is doing."
"NO, I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS!" Demanded Iromir.
"Brothers, sisters, please calm down. I called this truce to show you something." Lorei said as she moved her hand. We weren't standing in the God's dimension anymore. We were in the human world. I somehow knew it. This was no battle, this was a massacre. Millions of human bodies were dead on the ground. Many with his limbs ripped off, beheaded, or with their chests ripped open.
"No!!!" shouted Eremir crying holding one of the bodies. It was the body of a child.
"Who did this?" asked Ferim holding Eremir.
"It does not matter. It is too late," said Eremir letting go of the corpse.
"It was Iromir," said Asdimir.
"I didn't do it!" protested Iromir.
"I don't care. There is only way now," said Eremir as he started to glow. He was going to show his divine form. He turned into a supersized version of himself, with three pairs of wings. His wings were covered in eyes. He also had a third eye on his forehead and in each hand he had a mouth he was naked. He had the perfect body, a body I obviously didn't have! One pair of wings covered his genitals. The rest of the Gods also transformed into their divine form.
Ferim was like the statue I saw only bigger. Morei was like a giant mermaid with three tails. Lorei was some kind of human with a horse's head, three horns and a pair of wings. Lerei was a mix of animal and plant that I didn't understand. Yerim, Samokir and Arerim were like giant golems of their element. Sairei was very pale covered in symbols in all the languages known and unknown to man.
Iromir was a dark cloud, with a mask of a face. Asimir was a human without a face, where his face should have been there was a bright light. The Eleven gods were all in their divine form standing in front of me. Now that I count well there were Eleven, but humans don't count Iromir as a God, they say he is an Antigod or they don't count Eremir because of him being dead. It hurt my eyes just to look in their direction.
"What are you going to do brother?" asked Iromir.
"What I should had done a long time ago." responded Eremir. "Go, protect yourself in your castles." he added.
"No, please my love don't do this. We are going to create the world again," said Ferim.
"No we won't. I am going to restart this world and ours," he said.
"But that is going to..." started Morei.
"Kill me? I know...it's the only way." Then he kissed Ferim. "I will always love you," he then moved his hand and all the other Gods disappeared. When they were gone he exploded and a bright light covered the whole earth. I don't know how much time passed, but I was still standing where Eremir exploded.
It was a crater. The crater was covered by a forest and it was crossed by a river, it looked a lot like the valley from the school. No, it was the valley. All of the Gods were standing on the middle of the valley. Three weird women were beside them. I knew who they were. They were the Destiny Makers.
Ferim said, "I still feel him, I know he's here somewhere."
"He's not here little nephew. You feel him because his energy is sustaining this world," said one of the makers.
"But ... he will be back someday," said another one.
"When destiny tells us it is time and the conditions are at their optimum, he will be born again," concluded the other. Then everything got dark.
Suddenly I was in a beautiful room and there was a man pacing backwards and forwards across the room. The door opened and a man came in. "Tsar Nikolas, your daughter gave birth to a beautiful boy...and a beautiful girl." said the man in Russian. The Tsar went into the room and on the bed was a girl younger than me, and a woman was beside her holding one baby, she was holding the other.
The girl said, "I wish Grigori could have been here." It was Anastacia daughter of the Tsar. "I present to you Nikola and Aleksandra Rasputin Romanov." So she was Anastacia Romanova, the lost Russian princess. Even more shocking was that the father of the children was Grigori Rasputin. WHAAAAT?
I kept looking as time passed. The revolution came and Anastacia ran away with her children. She died when Aleksandra and Nikola were 18. They then did something unexpected and disgusting. They fell in love and had a child which they called Grigori. As the child turned 18 his fathers died. Grigori married a mermaid called Selene and they give birth to Amelie and Elena. Elena though died and gave all of her magic to Amelie who married Ilya Afanasiev, a wizard.
Amelie and Ilya Afanasiev had a son Nikolas Ilich Afanasiev. My father.
The Romanovs were elves. Rasputin was the son of an angel. My grandfather Ilya Afanasiev was the son of a wizard giant and of a demonic dragon. So, somehow I was a mix of a lot of celestials.
I then saw my father's life and memories of my life I didn't remember. When I was little the Gods were always there. I couldn't see them then, but I could now. They were what caused me to survive the accident. I also saw something else, something far more shocking... It wasn't an accident! Someone caused it...I just couldn't see who.
I opened my eyes and I was still rocking in the chair. Baba Yaga had finished her `snack'. "How long I was gone?" I asked.
"Maybe an hour or so." As she spoke I gave her the rose.
"I need to go and process all of this," I said stunned.
"Yes you should. Someone is waiting for you outside." I ran and as I passed the living room my friends shouted my name but I kept running so they followed. The house bent its legs again and I got out, there was a group of Dragons and Wyverns outside. I felt my friends behind me as I sensed the house started to walk away into the woods. I knew that two of those dragons were Kito and Kibo.
"What happened?" I asked the group of dragons in general.
"The school has been attacked. We are commanded to take you there NOW," said a beautiful and gigantic black dragon that I knew was Kito.
"Come, ride the wyverns," said another dragon. We did as we were told and climbed onto the back of the wyverns who surprisingly had riding seats tethered onto their backs. As soon as we were all in the saddles the group lifted and flew through the sky. One of the dragons violently expelled a blue fire ball and as it exploded it opened a portal. All of the dragons passed through it, along the wyverns.
In no time we were flying over the castle. It was covered by an eerie dome which opened to let us through. The moment we were on the inside the dome closed. The group landed in one of the yards. The school no longer felt secure. It felt like a home after it had been broken into by burglars. It made me feel almost unclean. I knew though that was just a human reaction to being invaded. I didn't wait for my friends as my grandmother was standing in the entrance. I ran in her direction.
"It's...Claire..." That was all she said before I ran as fast as I could towards the infirmary. It was full of injured students and teachers. Next to one of the beds my sisters were standing, Claire was on the bed almost dead.
"Claire!" I shouted and hugged her.
Claire whispered, "Hi little cat...how are you? You know who you are at last?"
I nodded...I was crying "Who did this?" I asked.
She shrugged, "They had masks..." was all she said. I stayed with my sister until she fell asleep.
"What did they do to her?" I asked to the Doctor once we were far from Claire.
"Actually the wound is not too serious. The problem is that the blade was poisoned." The doctor looked at me, "It is a very rare poison that was used. It's called `Black Beak'. We need a Unicorn and snowdrop flowers or we will not be able to save her," she sighed.
"Let's find a Unicorn, and some fucking flower then! I know someone who will most likely have the flower," I said.
"Arantxa!" said Amelie. "I think I saw some snowdrops on her post the other day."
"Exactly!" I said, "Now we just need a unicorn."
"It is not that easy," added Dr. Stephanopoulus. "I am a Unicorn, but my horn was severed years ago by a hunter. Since the Dark ages unicorns have been hiding in their human form. Since I lost my horn and have lived in the human world all these years I have lost my connections."
Marguerite stated, "I know a Unicorn. Well she is half unicorn, but it may work."
The doctor looked at her, "It will work as long as she can turn into her Unicorn form."
Marguerite smiled, "She can. I've seen it...Let me go speak with her alone. I'll come back in no time." She left and was running through the halls faster than she had ever run before.
Amelie stated, "I'll go to Arantxa." Then she looked at me, "You stay here. Sit down. Calm down and rest. You have been out all day. OK?"
I smiled and giggled, "Ok mummy." I sat down in one of the chairs. My friends arrived a short time later. We were sitting there for over an hour when Amelie came back with a lot of snowdrop flowers in her hands.
"Now I have to extract their oil. It will take me a while. Your sister is sedated." The doctor stated going away with the snowdrops.
MJ came up to me and put his hand on my shoulder, "Come on Nicky...You should go take a shower and change your clothes into something comfortable." I suddenly realized I was wearing my training suit. I guess I should call it my quest suit as I used it for everything.
I nodded and decided to do as he said, because I really needed some alone time. I went to my room and took a hot shower and then dressed in sweatpants and a sweatshirt. I then laid down on my bed to organize my thoughts which were just swirling around in an unorganized mess at that moment. After an hour my phone rang and it was Amelie.
"Come now! Marguerite called, she was on her way with the Unicorn." That was all I heard before I hung up and left the room running. I was in the medical ward in no time and soon Marguerite arrived with Christianna on tow. Her yellow eyes glowed differently today. Then I saw the pendant she had on her neck. It was a sliver Unicorn, Christianna was the Unicorn.
No one said a word. We went to a room where Claire was alone. Everybody stayed outside as only the family was allowed inside. The doctor gave a little bottle with transparent liquid to Christianna. She held it between her hands and the liquid started to glow. The doctor gave the liquid to Claire and then Christiana transformed.
A bright light enveloped the whole room, and then there was the unicorn standing beside my sister. A stunningly beautiful white Unicorn with golden eyes, the same eyes that Christianna had. The horn of the Unicorn glowed like a diamond, the Unicorn touched my sister's forehead with the horn and Claire began to glow.
Suddenly Christianna changed back into human form and began to run. She ran down the hall and out towards the exit. The doctor looked at us, "Let her be. It is normal. She needs to be alone for a while now because it makes you feel invaded sharing your form like that."
That night we stayed with Claire, after everything that had happened I couldn't sleep. Not with all that was happening: on one hand my sister almost died; on the other I witnessed a history that explained why I was who I was. The next day was Sunday and I stayed with Claire the whole day.
My sisters also stayed with me, but Maman had an emergency council. She is queen after all and she was at the school when it was attacked. I heard that the headmasters of all the magical schools from all over the planet were attending. At noon I managed to get Amelie and Marguerite to leave so that they could get some sleep. Claire was still asleep.
"Hi." said a man I didn't know.
"Hello."
"You must be Nikolas." I nodded. "I am Heinrichsen, Leo Heinrichsen. I am the headmaster of the Galantis school for the higher learning." He said lifting his hands for me to shake. I didn't know him, but I knew about his school. It is someplace secluded, no one knew where. The school chose only the best of the best to study for the summer. There you learned to use magic in its higher purpose. Holy magic as they called it.
"I know about your school."
"I am here because I want to extend a formal invitation for you to attend my school." he said and handed me an envelope.
"Me? Attend your school?"
"Yes you. We have been evaluating you. Admittedly you are a rough diamond, but with the proper work you can achieve great things." He lo0oked at me, "Think about it. I will wait for your decision. On the day of Samhain, I will come again. Good bye, for now." He left me sitting on the chair beside Claire's bed. I looked at the envelope in my hands for what seemed like ages and then opened it. The letter inside said in a very elegant hand writing a formal invitation to attend the school.
"I would go if I were you," said Amelie. We talked for a while. Claire woke up eventually, and at night I went to sleep because of a tea Dr. Stephanopoulus had made me drink. The next day I returned to my normal classes.
The week passed quietly after that. Everybody was still a little nervous from the attack. Instead of Ability training on just Wednesday, we changed it to training all days after classes. As the days passed and I trained more and more my abilities developed. I could now change my appearance a little. Just the basic, hair color, eye color, a some of my face features, my height, my weight. I also learned how to levitate. It was just a little, but with practice I would soon be able to fly.
Time passed and suddenly Samhain was upon us or how human people knew it, Halloween. The celebration of the last harvest, the celebration of a new year for magical society, the celebration not for the death but for the life of those who had left us.
