The idea for this story came from StarCherrieQueen. I'm afraid I am heading in a different direction then planned but I wouldn't have gotten here at all if it wasn't for her. Thanks for trusting me with your idea.
"Who is it," Sam mouthed.
"It's Shane," Dean whispered.
"Dean, don't open the door," Sam said; rising from his chair, gun at his side.
Dean could tell the Sam was terrified. So was he but he wasn't going to show it. Sam was right. Something lured them here, but Dean had no intentions of turning and running.
"Dean please...don't..."
Dean had the door open before he could finish. Sam put the safety back on his gun and tucked it into his waistband, pulling his shirt out to cover it.
"Son of a bitch, Shane...what are you doing here?" Dean laughed, partially blocking the door.
"I was gonna ask you the same thing. May I come in?"
"Hell no," Dean laughed again.
Sam let out a sigh of relief. 'Smart move Dean. Don't invite him in until we know what we're dealing with.'
"I got my baby brother with me and he's not decent," Dean said, stepping over the threshold and leaving the door slightly ajar.
Sam rifled quickly through his bag and pocketed a small vial of holy water and a miniature wooden stake and hammer. He eased over to the door to hear what Dean and Shane were talking about.
"So how did you find us here man?"
"I saw you to doing interviews over by the pier. I asked around and some folks told me you were college student's doing a documentary about missing persons. I can't believe you're in college."
"Yeah well, I was a late bloomer."
Sam smiled when he heard that.
"So dude, what are you doing here?" Dean asked casually.
"Visiting some friends." Shane said. "So, since you're in town and I'm in town, you want to get together?"
"Sure, that would be great," Dean replied, hoping his fake smile wouldn't give too much away.
"Great. I'll pick you up this evening around seven."
"I tell you what, why don't I swing by your friends' place and pick you up instead?
"I don't know Dean, they're kind of funny and...I know, we could meet by the pier where you did those interviews. There's a wonderful restaurant there where they make the best peach cobbler."
"Great," Dean replied.
"Then it's a date?"
"It's old friends getting together."
Sam pumped his fist and did a silent 'yes' at Dean's reply. Sam quickly scurried away from the door as he heard his brother entering.
"You're right Sammy, something's up," he said, as he locked the door.
"Why? What happened?" Sam asked innocently.
"Don't even try it Sammy. I know you were there listening. I'd have done the same thing in your position."
"What position is that? Experienced hunter?"
"No. Jealous brother."
"I'm going with you," Sam replied, ignoring Dean's last statement.
"No Sammy, stay here. He wants to get in this room for some reason and I don't think I'm in any danger while I'm awake."
Missouri clicked off the phone after speaking to John. He'd be in Harlan around 7:00pm. There wasn't much she could do from where she was but continue to be a friend to John and his boys. She hoped Sam wouldn't be too damaged by the information he was about to receive. He had such power and such a propensity for sorrow that she was almost certain this news would destroy him. She had only sensed one force keeping the young man sane through all he endured and that was his brother Dean.
Missouri didn't dare share the thoughts she read off both Winchesters during their visit to her. Their father would never understand it. The two boys needed each other. Dean, although clueless to his brother's feelings, was masking feelings of his own. Sam was devastated by Jessica's death, but more than that, he had an overwhelming guilt because he'd left her for his brother. At first Missouri wasn't sure she was reading him right. She thought he might have felt guilty for leaving her to go with his brother. But the words leaving her for his brother kept echoing. He'd left one love for another. She could only hope that whatever the outcome, Dean Winchester would drop his uncaring facade and see how much his brother needed him.
Dean drove to the pier around 6:30pm. He had a hard time convincing Sam to stay back at the hotel. To tell the truth, Dean didn't relish meeting his ex-boyfriend alone. For one thing, he wasn't really sure it was Shane he was seeing and not another doppelganger like the one that had stole his face and abducted Sam. It had taken Sam weeks to trust Dean again. He hoped they'd never encounter another shape shifting, face-stealing monster again. Dean checked his watch; it was ten minutes to seven. He patted his jacket pocket making sure his weapon was still there. Getting out of the car, he leaned against it and waited. It was a chilly evening and the breeze blowing made Dean shiver. He decided he wouldn't wait more than fifteen minutes before heading back to Sam.
Dean had just left after giving Sam and unconvincing argument about why he should stay behind. Sam stood in the doorway and watched his brother drive off before stepping inside. He suddenly was feeling very sleepy and his shoulders were aching again. He returned to his laptop and tried to focus on the research he'd begun. If they were dealing with an incubus, Dean was right, there was no danger until the intended victim was asleep.
One thing kept nagging at Sam as he arched his back and flexed his arms trying to relieve the pain radiating from his shoulder blades, if Shane was an incubus, why didn't he take Dean a long time ago. Sam really wanted to visit a library. Despite information available on the web, Sam loved books and much preferred leafing through heavy volumes. It was the only part of the job he loved. He often thought if this thing they were chasing was ever found and all this should suddenly come to an end, he'd return to school and teach a course in the occult and ancient beliefs. He even pictured Dean trapped behind a desk as his research assistant.
Sam put his computer on hibernate and decided to stretch out on his bed and go over the little they did know so far. He took his cell phone out and plugged it into the charger just in case Dean called him. In spite of the discomfort, Sam lay on his back staring up at the ceiling. He had a mind to go to the pier, but on foot he'd never make it before seven. He folded his hands behind his head and kept telling himself as he stared at the paint chips threatening to spill down on him that Dean could take care of himself. His lids were getting heavy and he tried to force himself to get off the bed but it felt as if a weight was pressing upon him and he could barely breathe. His heart raced as he attempted to unfold his arms and push himself up and off the bed.
"You fear your own kind," a voice whispered off to his right.
Sam tried to turn his head but couldn't. Panicked, he tried to call out for Dean knowing full well Dean was nowhere around.
"Hush," a gentle voice spoke to him. He could feel fingertips on his face but could see no one. "You needn't be afraid. You're one of us."
Sam fashioned his mouth to speak but no words would come out.
"It's been a long journey getting you here. I had to make sure you'd chosen wisely," the almost familiar voice spoke.
A brief image flashed through Sam's mind; a man standing over his crib soothing him. 'But I was just a baby, how could that memory be real?' Sam thought.
"You are not like them," the voice continued, as if answering Sam's thoughts.
'Who are you and what do you want?' Sam spoke in his mind, testing to see if whatever it was really was communicating to him through his thoughts.
"The real question is what are you and what do you want?"
Sam sat up suddenly. The room was dark and he was in excruciating pain. He tore off his shirt before doubling over on the bed. Tears streamed down his face. 'What do you want?' rang in his ears.
"Dean," he cried out loud, "I want Dean."
