After work Bill and Becky had dinner with Joanne and drove together to meet with Rev. Martenson at All Saints church. They were surprised to find the Rev. Martenson was a woman, something not common, but happening more often in the Episcopal denomination.
They discussed wedding plans and dates, and were pleased to find that dates were available in the time frame desired, and that the church had a hall suitable for their reception afterward – that would be both convenient and save some money as well. They explained to Rev. Martenson that they were new to the area and did not have a church home, but that Becky's mother had gone to the Episcopal church in Iowa. Rev. Martenson said they were always open to new members, and if they joined the church the fee would be discounted. Bill and Becky said they would give it some thought, and left a deposit to secure the date.
On the way back to Bill's, Becky said she really liked the church and Rev. Martenson, and thought it might be a good idea to join. Bill said, "I'm ok with that, but let's just not get too deep into all the religious stuff – a church can be a pretty good way to socialize, but let's not get crazy about it."
Becky and Joanne laughed, and Becky agreed. Upon returning to the Bill's, they sat in the living room together, drinking wine and discussing wedding plans.
Something had been on Bill's mind all day, and finally he summoned the courage to broach the issue. "Joanne," Bill said, "why did you try to tempt me last night?"
Joanne blushed a bit and responded, "Becky is a good friend and I know that a lot of guys who like girls like us tend to play around, and I wanted to be sure that Becky didn't marry a guy like that."
"You are very pretty," Bill replied, "and very tempting, but I am committed to Becky."
It was getting late and time for everyone to get some sleep, so Becky cautioned, "no more testing tonight – can I count on you two to behave yourselves?"
Bill and Joanne both nodded in agreement, and the three turned in for the night.
The next morning after breakfast Joanne packed her car and departed, after which Bill and Becky left for work. It was Friday, and both had arranged to leave at lunchtime so they would have plenty of time for the long drive to Dayton, Ohio to visit Bill's family.
On the drive to Dayton, Bill and Becky discussed visiting her family in a few weeks, and inviting Joanne, so she could do some wedding planning with Becky's mother. Bill was relieved that the women were taking care of most of the wedding stuff, because he would much rather work all day on the farm than get involved in wedding plans.
They were making good progress and at 1pm they stopped for lunch in Peoria. After lunch they resumed their trip. They were fortunate to avoid the rush hour traffic and arrived at Bill's family home at 7:15pm.
Becky was introduced to Bill's family and they welcomed her. Bill's mother brought them all soft drinks and they sat in the living room and visited for awhile. Bill's mother excused herself to attend to the final dinner preparations and Becky asked if she could help. Bill was really glad that she volunteered, and thought she would do well with his mother, but crossed his fingers just the same.
In the kitchen Becky helped out by steaming some asparagus while Bill's mother pulled a roast from the oven. Bill's mother said, "Please get a packet of Hollandaise Sauce mix from the third drawer."
Becky opened the drawer as requested but could find no sauce mix. Bill's mother checked and confirmed there was no sauce mix.
"We don't need a mix," said Becky, "I make Hollandaise from scratch at home all the time."
Bill's mother was surprised and said, "that's great – what do you need?"
Becky listed the ingredients and Bill's mother set them out. As soon as the asparagus was steamed the sauce was ready, and Becky helped dish up the dinner.
As they sat down to dinner, Bill's mother said, "It looks like you have a real keeper here, Bill – Becky really knows her way around the kitchen – she even made the Hollandaise sauce from scratch – I don't know anyone else who knows how to do that!"
Meanwhile, Bill's father and his brother Mike had warmed up to Becky, saying, "She's one really good looking engineer!"
After dinner they had a brief discussion of wedding plans, and Mike agreed to be one of the groom's men. It was getting late, so Bill's mother reviewed the sleeping arrangements. Becky would sleep in Bill's old room and Bill could sleep on the couch. Bill's family was more conservative than Becky's, so Bill decided not to make a fuss about sleeping apart from Becky – besides, it would make Becky look like a more suitable wife if they slept apart – Bill couldn't wait to get back!"
Bill's father worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the next day took Bill and Becky on a brief tour. Bill had seen it many times before, having grown up in Dayton, but went along with it for Becky's sake, and to keep peace in the family.
Becky had been concerned that Bill's mother might not like her, but they became fast friends, and Becky spent time with her whenever the opportunity presented itself.
That night Bill and Becky took the family out for dinner to thank them for their hospitality. The next morning Bill and Becky departed after a successful weekend visit.
On the way home Bill stopped several times at rest stops, as if for bathroom breaks, but neither of them had to go. "No problem," said Bill, walking to Becky's side, opening the door, and helping her out.
Bill took her in his arms and kissed her, saying, "I'm glad we aren't sleeping apart tonight!"
"You just want to get into my panties!" declared Becky.
"And you want me too!" responded Bill.
"Perhaps," said Becky, with a mischievous grin.
When they arrived at Bill's they made up for lost time, and later unpacked the car.
