So it has been a while since I wrote anything because of school and my other passion taking my time. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, I think this story is a good start. Hope you like it, and to my fans thank you for continuing to read my crazy fiction.
What It Means to Be Human
CHAPTER 1
I can't believe how much my life has changed in the last six months. What started the roller coaster was I lost my parents in a train accident. We weren't exactly Trump rich, but we were well off. As I was the last surviving family member everything went to me. In the end after all the finances and the funeral was paid off I had close to 1 million dollars left over in my back account.
I guess I should introduce myself. My name is William or “Will” Kegan. I'm 24, medium length black hair, brown eyes, and full lips. I'm not skinny or well defined, I'm probably not even considered average anymore. I'm husky, I guess would be the politically correct term. It's sad how weight changes through the times, you know that by todays standards Marilyn Monroe would be considered plus size. Okay anyway, like I said, I'm husky, about 5'9” with a indifferent temperament. Lately it's gotten worse with the passing of my parents. I'll tell you, money truly doesn't buy happiness, I would give up anything to see them again.
So with all the chaos beginning to settle, I finished my nursing degree and decided to move out of California, to a pretty good hospital in Boston. The change was drastic, I know, but I couldn't bare to live in my parents house all alone. I ended up selling it, which gave me enough money to buy a small two bedroom flat a few blocks from work. I'd finally finished unpacking, the living room was a good size, not to large, and the color of mocha, but it was the kitchen that I fell in love with. It had an granite island, and beautiful appliances that came with the place. My spare room was white and boring, but my bedroom was painted crimson, with white trim. My bed was my favorite thing, it was a four poster with black and red bedding, that called my name every time I came into the room. I was really excited tomorrow was my first day at the hospital. After taking a shower, I put on a pair of boxers and climbed into bed, forgetting everything.
My alarm went off, and as I got out of bed I smelt my coffee brewing in the kitchen. After getting dressed in my scrubs, I went to the kitchen to fill up my mug and head out. Living so close to work, I decided against buying a car. I figured if I'm going to be a big guy in a skinny world I could walk to work, making me feel good.
The bright fluorescent lights bounced off the white floors in the hospital and a faint scent of bleach filled the air. My boss was named Shirley and as she introduced herself I noticed how much she didn't care about her job. She seemed so unenthusiastic that I was there, that she passed off my beginning training to a regular.
“So William this is Aiden, he will be your leader. He'll train you.”
“Okay thank you.”
“MmmHmmm.”
From behind me I heard a smooth voice, “Hello I'm Aiden.”
As I turned I couldn't believe my eyes. Aiden was sexy as hell, it was his lips that I noticed first. He had pale skin, dark hair that was lightly styled, wearing dark blue scrubs. I tried to keep my hormones under control, but I'll tell you he was one nice piece of man steak.
“Hello I'm William, Will Kegan.”
“It's nice to meet you Will, don't worry about Shirley, she's just upset that the hospital is forcing her to transfer.”
“Oh okay, yeah she appeared to be upset.”
“So where are you from?”
“California.”
“Aaahh a Cali boy.”
“Yeah more or less.”
“Why did you move here?”
“I um...my parents passed away so I decided to make a change.”
“Oh I'm sorry to hear that.”
“It's alright, I take one day at a time.”
“That's all you can do. So should we get started?”
“Sure.”
“Well for the next few weeks, you'll shadow me, carry supplies, food, ect. Once you feel comfortable you'll go out on your own.”
“Alright. Sounds like a plan.”
With that we made our rounds, by the time our first shift was finished Aiden said it was lunch time. I figured he'd had enough of my following him so I excused myself to use the bathroom. After finishing I washed my hands and found my way to the cafe. I got a ice tea and a turkey sandwich, which was surprisingly good. I was sitting by myself at a table by a window, looking out at the gloomy sky, which made me smile a little. I liked the cold and rain, something I was use to in California. As I was chewing my food a familiar voice woke my from my spacing.
“Hey you mind if I sit with you?”
“Oh hello Aiden, no not at all.”
He had a water with him and was looking at me in a way that made me wonder if I had something on my face.
“Is there a problem?”
“No, I'm just trying to figure you out.”
“What do you mean, there isn't much to figure out, but you can ask me anything you want.”
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
That shocked me a little. How did he know? It's not that I hide my sexuality, but I'm not running down main st. with butterfly wings on either.
“No I don't have a boyfriend, why do you ask?”
“I apologize for being so forward. It's just amazing that someone your age moved here alone, with nobody.”
“You're not much older than me, and you're here alone, right?”
“Well I have roommates, one that works here, named Josh.”
“And the other?”
“The other what?”
“You said you have roommates, meaning more than one, what does the other one do?”
“Oh she...she is...she works from home.”
“Oh okay.”
I could tell for some reason that this made him a little uneasy so I decided to steer the conversation to something else.
“So how long have you worked here?”
“About five years. I enjoy my work.”
“You seem like you do, all the people you look after enjoy your company.”
“Well thank you. You've got a knack at this as well.”
“Thanks.”
With that lunch was finished and work commenced. Everything went well, we handed out food trays, and took the empty ones to be washed. We changed bandages, cleaned wounds, checked heart monitors, by the time we were finished, my shift was coming to a close. Right before I was close to checking out Shirley came up to me,
“Hey I need you to stay with Aiden, we are short staffed, a few of the other nurses are sick, so you're gonna have to stay.”
“Okay, no problem.”
When I turned Aiden was there.
“So it looks like you get to put up with me for the remainder of the night.”
“Yep, same to you.”
“Ah you're not bad at all. I like teaching you.”
We shared a smile and continued to make our rounds. It got slow after a few hours, I went and got a coffee, buying one for Aiden as well.
“Thank you Will, you didn't have to.”
“I know, you can get mine next time. So while we have a few moments, tell me about yourself.”
“Well I've been here all my life, parents gone, that's pretty much it. I'm boring.”
“Like me”
“You're not boring. I enjoy our conversation.”
“Thanks, you're lying, but thanks.”
He smiled, “Well it's break time, I'm going to catch some air, you want to join me?”
“Sure why not.”
We made out way down and out the side entrance of the hospital. We were walking, while I was looking at the sky, the crisp night was thrilling, the smells and bright lights. It wasn't until I heard a new voice from behind.
“Give me your money.”
We both turned, standing in front of us was a homeless man, wielding a six inch knife towards my chest. I was slightly startled, but not as much as I would've expected. Aiden tried to reason with the man, but he would budge,
“Give me your fuckin wallet.”
“We don't have them on us.”
“Well...maybe we can work something out.”
He was looking at me as he said this, grabbing his crotch. I was instantly repulsed.
“I wouldn't touch you to scratch you.”
As I said this he twisted the blade in a swift motion, slicing my forearm. Just as he did, I saw Aiden punch the guy square in the jaw. The man fell to the ground. He was shuffling to get back on his feet, and when he did he took one look at Aiden and ran. I noticed when Aiden looked at me his eyes were all black, yet when I looked again they were normal. I broke eye contact as the sting in my arm began to throb. I was bleeding more than I thought.
“Oh my gawd Will, here.”
He took off his scrub and wrapped my arm in it, walking me back to the hospital. As we got into a spare room, Aiden said he'd be right back. He was gone for a few moments, and returned with a first aid kit. After sanitizing the wound, he said that I would be okay, just a few tape stitches and I'd be good to go. I noticed he had on a new scrub and after he cleaned up he threw his soiled scrub away.
“Thank you Aiden, first night on the job and I get sliced. That's pretty funny.”
“You have a strange sense of humor.”
“Yeah I kind of do.”
“No worries, I am the same way.”
We continued our shift until it was over. At around 3am we both clocked out and made our way outside.
“You mind if I walk you home Will, just to be safe.”
“Sure.”
So we walked back to my place. It was a nice night out still, and regardless of the insane man who cut me, I was beginning to enjoy Boston. We got back to my place and I asked if he'd like to come in.
“You don't mind.”
“Not at all.”
So I let him in and gave him the ten cent tour. He enjoyed my bedroom colors and asked if I'd selected them myself.
“Yeah my favorite color is crimson.”
“It's beautiful.”
We ended up in the dining room talking about random things, favorite movies, food, hobbies. By the time I looked up at the clock I saw that it was 5:30am. Aiden said he should be going, and I thanked him for walking me home.
“No problem. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After locking the door and turning the lights off, I began to get undressed to take a shower. I had my shoes and scrubs off when my doorbell chimed. I went to the door and looked through the peep hole and saw it was Aiden. He must have forgotten something. I opened the door not realizing I was in a black tank top and red boxer briefs. Aiden smiled as he looked down,
“Sorry I can see you were getting ready to go to bed.”
“Yeah its okay, did you forget something?”
“No I just remembered that our shifts are going to be nights from now on and I wondered if I could walk to work with you tomorrow?”
“Umm...yeah. That sounds like fun.”
“Okay shift starts at 6pm, so I'll be here around 5pm.”
“Alright.”
“Goodnight.”
“Night”.
We parted ways and after locking my door, I took a shower. Finishing drying off and putting on a new pair of boxers, I was thinking about Aiden. He was really sweet,
“I wonder if he likes me.” I mumbled to myself as I got under the covers.

CHAPTER 2
My alarm went off at 3:45pm, this night shift was going to be interesting. The shower woke me up, massaging my bones. I got partially dressed, no shoes, a tank top and my scrub bottoms. I made some soup and had a glass of orange juice. I turned on my record player and put on some Ella Fitzgerald, letting the jazz fill the air, lifting my spirits. My doorbell rang at around 4:50pm.
I let Aiden in, about to offer him something to drink, but saw he had two cups of coffee in his hand. He handed one to me,
“Thanks for last night.”
“No problem....mmm it's good.”
“I'm glad you like it.”
We sat in the dining room and he asked me about my cut. He took off my bandage, when he did he was close enough so that I could smell his cologne. I felt a burning in me, something I hadn't felt in a while.
“It looks good.”
He covered it with the wrapping and took his seat next to me.
“Aiden can I ask you a personal question?”
“Shoot.”
“Are you gay?”
He smirked,
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
“Why don't you ask the other question?”
“What other question?”
“Well that answer is yes I do.”
“Yes you do what?”
“Find you attractive.”
“Oh.”
I could tell I was blushing because my face got hot, but before I got a chance to react he leaned over a placed his lips on mine, letting his tongue enter my mouth ever so gently. He hand his hands around me, while I ran mine through his hair. We continued to kiss for a few more moments before he abruptly stopped.
“I'm sorry Will I should have asked you first.”
“It was fine, really fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. I'd like to do it again.”
He smiled as he leaned forward and repeated his previous adventure. He tasted like mint and java. We both stood up and as he pinned me against the counter I felt his hardness on my thigh. He pulled me close to him so that we could feel each others chest. His kissing soon traveled from my lips, to my cheek, then to my neck. It was here he rested and took a deep breath.
“You smell so good Will.”
When we relaxed for a little bit my mind was spinning.
“What's wrong?”
“What does this make us Aiden?”
“What do you want this to be?”
“Please just answer my question, what does this make us?”
“Alright...this makes us dating.”
“Good, because I really didn't want to get caught up in a one night stand.”
“Don't worry about that, usually I'm not interested in other nurses, but there is something about you that makes me feel...different....special.”
“Me too.”
After cleaning the kitchen and finishing getting dressed Aiden and I headed out towards the hospital. It was nice to stand next to him, to feel a body next to mine. It seems strange to say, but I missed human contact. I didn't like being alone, to others I might say I didn't mind it, but deep down I wanted companionship. Work was the same as last night, calm, nothing to out of the ordinary. This was how it stayed for the next few weeks. It wasn't until I didn't have to shadow Aiden that there was few emergencies. Aiden and I remained close, we went out on a few dates, and enjoyed grinding against each other, but to be honest I was beginning to wonder why he hadn't tried to move further.
Well tonight was the night, Aiden was working a late shift, while I had the night off. I was going to surprise him by cooking a nice dinner and letting him have his way with me. Dinner's prime rib with a nice salad and a berry cobbler. As the meat and dessert were finishing up I headed out to pick up Aiden. I waited outside the hospital, it was colder than normal, 2am had a way of chilling people to the core. After the minutes passed by I began to wonder if I missed him. I walked around the hospital towards the side, and could've sworn I heard his voice. The closer I got the more certain I was that Aiden was close by. When I rounded the corner I saw it was Aiden with another figure. It was the homeless man that cut me a few weeks ago. At first I thought maybe the man was trying to hurt Aiden, but when I got closer I realized how wrong I was. The man was slowly dying in Aiden's clutches, I could see the life draining from him, yet I still walked closer until Aiden lifted his head to look where the new scent was coming from. When he saw me, his mouth dripping with blood and eyes black as coal, his expression was a mixture of confusion, frustration and worry.
“Oh my gawd. Aiden.”
He dropped the homeless man on the ground hard enough to crack his skull. As he walked up to me there was a fear that was deep in my stomach. I thought to myself, this was where I was going to die,
“You know I could kill you and nobody would know. Nobody to miss you.”
Slightly glaring at him,
“I'm not afraid to die.”
“You sure about that?”
“Like you said, who would know. Who would miss me?”
I turned by back to him and walked towards my house. The whole time I was thinking he was behind me, but when I arrived and closed the door, I realized that I was completely alone. A part of me was saddened by that, I would've wanted to continue to fight, to argue, then possibly make up. By this thought I realized just how desensitized I was to the thought of Aiden being a vampire. That wasn't what bothered me, it was just how cold he was when he spoke to me. I turned off the oven and took out the food, slamming it on the table. I picked up the cobbler and hurled it at the wall.
“Hello, Will is it?”
“What...who are you, how did you get in my house?”
“My name is Sally and I'm Aiden's other roommate.”
“Okay, I ask again how did you get into my house?”
“About that, I'm...not alive.”
“You're a vampire to?”
“What no...no. I'm a ghost.”
“Hmm okay, not the craziest thing I've ever heard and after tonight I'm willing to believe just about anything.”
“Well I came here to tell you that Aiden didn't mean what he said.”
“He what...so he sent you to tell me. Instead of being a man and telling me to my face.”
I turned my back to find a rag to clean up the mess I'd made, while shaking my head.
“He doesn't know I'm here.”
“Okay, thank you for telling me.”
“You know for a human you taking this really well. I mean Aiden being a vampire, me being and ghost and Josh being a werewolf.”
“Werewolf, well I didn't know that, but I figure this world is still very mysterious. Who am I to say what exists and what doesn't.”
“Wow I hope Aiden fixes his screw up, I like you.”
“Well thanks...I've got to clean up, so if you excuse me.”
“Oh not a problem, here let me help you with that.”
I watched as she went to the mess and moved her hand over deep purple mixture. As she did this I watched in awe as the slop was cleared away and back in the pan, which was no longer shattered. It looked as good as new.
“I'd pick it up but it's still really hot.”
“Amazing, thank you.”
“No problem, goodnight.”
“Night.”
Just as I said this she disappeared. I shook my head in disbelief, as I went over to pick of the pan with pot holders. It was pretty neat to see what Sally had done. After putting the food away I took a shower and went to bed.
The next night I got dressed and headed to work. I knew I would see Aiden and wasn't sure how I was going to handle the situation. Work went well enough in the beginning, I could see him looking in my direction as I clocked in, but I was trying my best to pretend he wasn't there. I made my rounds, checking to make sure everyone had their dinner or was as comfortable as possible. I was on break when he came up to me. I was sitting at the same table, looking out the same window when he approached.
“Can I sit?”
I remained silent looking out the window. I could see that he sat down, not wanting to wait for an answer. I was intently staring out the window, the street lights were bright tonight and there seemed to be more cars on the street than normal.
“We need to talk about last night and what you think you saw.”
I smirked in annoyance, yet he continued.
“I'm sure you think you....”
“Okay I'm going to stop you right there, if you condescend me one more time, I think I might actually hurl. I know what I saw and if you're wanting some type of reassurance that I will keep my mouth shut, you got it. You can leave now.”
“I wasn't trying to...”
I didn't let him finish as I got up and threw my drink away and went back to work. I changed a few bandages, but more or less it was a boring shift. My lunch break came around midnight, I figured I had an hour, so I decided to take a walk. I got half way down the block when he came up behind me.
“Are you going to talk to me?”
I just continued to walk, past a coffee shop and an abandoned building.
“Come on Will please.”
I turned the corner down an alley. I could hear his footsteps coming from behind.
“What do you want to talk about Aiden?”
“I want to apologize for last night and what you saw.”
“And what did I see?”
“You saw me feeding on that scum that hurt you.”
“I talked to Sally, she's actually really pleasant. She wanted to apologize for you.”
“Wait you can see her. How?”
“Don't know.”
“So you know what I am?”
“Yes, I knew that right when I saw you. I know what Josh is and frankly it doesn't worry me. What pisses me off though is what you said to me, who would miss me. Regardless if it was true, that was low and then when I walked away, you didn't come after me.”
“I thought you wanted to be left alone. And I said what I said in the moment, I didn't mean it.”
“It's the truth though, nobody would miss me if I died, that's why it hurt so much.”
“No that's not true, I'd miss you.”
“Doubtful, how many relationships have you had, encounters that end up with you going on and the person aging, then dying off?”
“I haven't found the right person, but I think it might be you. You're the first man that makes me feel the way I do. You know what I am and aren't scared and you can see Sally, that is another sign.”
“So if you like me so much, why haven't you made a move.”
