"Benny the Matchmaker" was inspired by my good old friend Castleton during a chat we had. He told me to write a short and simple story and suggested to use my last encounter with a nice stranger as I was walking my dog in the park.
So, here it is!

"Benny the Matchmaker" Chapter 2
Ian and Dylan played with Benny. They tossed a rope that had several knots, and the cute little caramel colored Olde English Bulldog had fun running back and forth as she tried to get the flying bounty.
Suddenly here body language changed, and she stopped chasing the rope. Her ears perked up, and her wrinkled face turned into a certain direction. She took off over the lawn, and made a beeline to a well dressed elderly Lady. Ian wanted to call Benny back, not knowing what was happening, but her owner stopped him. " It's Kenzo, you have no chance!" Ian wanted to ask in wonder who "Kenzo" might be, as he saw the reason for the sudden change in Benny's behavior.
Behind the Lady another caramel colored bulldog appeared, who had been on the other end of a long flexible dog leash that now rapidly shortened as the dog passed his calmly watching owner.
Ian did realize the new dog was no stranger, and Benny and the new arrival did not only know each other, but liked each other very much.
"Hello Mrs. Miller!" Dylan greeted the older Lady, while he quickly unleashed Kenzo. Ian by now understood the situation. Dylan and Mrs. Miller watched the two dogs chase each other, playing along so cute that people started to watch and even film them, before Dylan realized they were not alone.
"Mrs. Miller, may I introduce you to my friend Ian. Ian...Mrs. Miller, owner of Benny best buddy ... Kenzo"
Mrs. Miller seemed to have quite a hard time turning her head from watching the dogs play to the man that Dylan had just introduced. The boy was not prepared to hear the words she said, surprised, but evidently pleasantly: " Oh Dr. Austin, it's you?"
While the dogs played , Dylan learned that Kenzo's owner was not some random women living nearby, since she not only knew the world famous surgeon, but that she was overseeing a trust fund that sponsored Ian's work with the cities most famous hospital. He was in the city to perform procedures on otherwise hopeless cases of victims of accidents or crimes, people with heavy brain damages that could only be cured by an almost magical surgery.
Dylan realized the two acquaintances he had made through Benny were way out of his league, and as Mrs. Miller and Doctor Austin talked animatedly, he turned to find the dogs, evidently forgotten.
The little French Bulldog and the only slightly bigger Olde English were in a heated game of catch and ran around the mowed meadow that was the dedicated field for dog-walking. Dylan, a little disappointed by the way the Lady and the Surgeon had treated him, watched them in a sullen mood. He did not hear the footsteps behind him, and jumped as he felt a hand on his back.
"Dylan, why did you walk away?" Ian asked concerned. "I was surprised to meet Mrs. Miller, and you seemed to know her, so I didn't think as she started to talk...... " Ian trailed of, evidently feeling the sudden bad mood his young friend was in.
" And so you forget all about me, like people of wealth and status always forget people like me when a job is done?" Dylan was pissed. He was about to call Benny and interrupt the scene in front of them, good friends playing without any worry. But Benny had realized something was wrong, and with Kenzo hot on her heels she came running over, making a beeline to her young owner. As Dylan bent down to put her on the leash to prepare to leave, Benny and Kenzo had other plans and jumped him. Dylan's anger melted away like snow in a strong beam of spring sun while he was laying on his back, two playful dogs over him, licking his face, licking his sorrows away.
Mrs. Miller stood nearby and chuckled, and Ian, concerned about Dylan's earlier accident, knelt and held his friends head.
Dylan's mood changed as the dog's unconditional love showed through their wet kisses, and since he felt his newfound lovers legs supporting his head. He knew that Ian was maybe ruining a pair of trousers, kneeling in the grass, but the only thing the boy felt was love and care. All was good again, Benny again had saved the day.
Mrs. Miller's chipper voice interrupted the scene. She called Kenzo and put him on a leash, and Benny waited patiently by her master's side as Dylan stood and put her on a leash as well. Mrs. Miller surprised him as she suggested: " Tea, Gentlemen?" She did not wait for an answer as she turned and walked away, Kenzo... and Benny... by her side.
It was actually Dylan that was on a leash now, since the three walking ahead showed the direction and set the pace. Ian and Dylan just chuckled and followed . It was only a short walk form the Sheep Meadow were they had met, passing Imagine Mosaic and Strawberry Fields through the busy park to the old building that Mrs. Miller now entered after the group had crossed the always busy Central Park West street. 145 Central park was a quite famous address and the old house was well known from countless films playing in New York. Whenever a scene takes place in the park, the camera captures the well known towers.
The doorman opened smiling and made sure the dog's leashes did not get stuck, and the dogs walked in with the certain poise of self-confidence only Bulldogs have. Ian followed Mrs. Miller, but Dylan hesitated shortly, only visiting houses like that through back entrances so far, on his way to repair a faucet or unclog some plumbing. It was Benny again who made sure her master was not forgotten, as she made her friend Kenzo stop and bark. Since he was , evidently, the owner of the place, his friend and guest Benny was royalty and her master, or better, out of a dogs point of view, her servant, was invited too. Dylan walked in and realized how friendly the staff was. He realized that he wore designer wear, even though it was casual and sporty, but he blended in perfectly, a good looking boy in a crowd of good looking people after a healthy walk in the park.
The San Remo was famous for it's style, and the apartment that Mrs. Miller shared with her husband and Kenzo was in her family for ages, as she explained Dylan while she led her guest to the balcony. He realized that Mrs. Miller was not only the nice old lady and devoted dog lover, but also rich beyond dreams, since a flat with a balcony, and a flat on the corner of the building, was worth a fortune.
Kenzo did not care as he started a game of tugging with Benny, and Ian, Dylan and Mrs. Miller watched the dogs pull the rope with the knots. Mr. Miller appeared, carrying a huge tray full of porcelain, and Mrs. Miller introduced him casually. The tea and little sandwiches and small pieces of cake were delicious, and even Benny and Kenzo had their snacks, little treats of liver and duck, with a salt free and sugar free type of bread that Mr. Miller had prepared especially for the pets.
Mrs. Miller was seemingly proud of her husband, and it took Dylan a while to realize Miller was a little slow and had a scar on his head, shining through his thin gray hair. Ian mouthed " Tumor" and Dylan realized Mr. Miller earlier had been treated by the famous brain surgeons hands. A wave of a warm feeling washed over the boy, feeling proud of his new friend, and feeling good as he was treated like an equal by these rich people that had the same everyday problems he had. And Benny? She munched on the delicious treats just like Kenzo did.
Ian was the first to see that Mr. Miller was starting to get tired, and he suggested to leave and let him rest. Benny was a little disappointed to leave her playmate, but she as usual stayed calm and left the house with her master and their friend Ian. It was still quite early, and as they crossed the park on their way back to the hotel, Dylan addressed the question he had on his mind since he woke up in the luxury of the hotel room and not in his own bed at home.
" What will happen now? I have to go back to work tomorrow, and you will fly home to Australia soon, right?" Ian could see the longing and the worry in the younger man's face as he answered slowly, considering every word carefully:
" You know that I really like you, right? I fell for you when we first met, when I first saw you with this cutie pie." He petted Benny's head and went on: "At first I thought you were hot, then I saw you were cute, and suddenly I saw you were the best boy with the most beautiful soul I ever met! I love you Dylan, and I want to make it possible for us!"
Benny seemed to listen in closely, walking only a few feet ahead of their master and his new friend. Dylan's head seemed to want to split open , his headache back and harder then before, but he tried to hide it, tried to think hard to find the right words to answer Ian. He did not even realize that his tongue was heavy as he started to utter words, and Ian, as the experienced medical doctor that he was, recognized the critical condition right away. Dylan's cerebral concussion was evidently far worse than the cute dumb kid had admitted. Ian knew time was of essence as Dylan fainted and all the man could do was grab him and lay him softly into the grass. Benny, now all in an almost motherly mode, stood by her master and licked his face, while Ian called a MICU, a mobile intensive care unit, dialing the direct number of the hospital he worked for. People had started to watch, some even filmed with their phones, but a policeman riding on his horse stopped and secured the site, giving the MICU room to roll in and pick the boy up. Ian had placed another call to non other than Mrs. Miller, who had put her husband to bed for a nap and now came rushing over, dragged by Kenzo who seemed to have a telepathic link to his beloved Benny. As the ambulance left with Dylan and Ian, the two dogs and Mrs. Miller stayed back, seemingly nervous, but comforting each other, it seemed. The nice elderly Lady was informed and even had Dylan's Mother's number. She was the perfect choice to inform her, Ian knew, calmly and at the same time with enough empathy, and make sure Dylan's Mom would not freak out.
Meanwhile the ambulance raced to the private hospital were Ian performed his surgeries. He had developed the most sophisticated techniques and his reputation was flawless, which was the reason why the richest people in the world consulted him and made it possible for him to work with the best hospitals in the around.
Dylan was already in a chemical induced coma that Dr. Austin had started while they rode in the ambulance. He knew that all symptoms showed a heightened pressure in Dylan's cranium, his skull, maybe because of a swollen brain due to his concussion, or a much worse reason. Ian's instinct, sharpened by countless flawlessly performed surgeries, told him his Beloved might have an undiagnosed aneurysm.
He had taken the risk to prepare the boy for the operation without waiting for any further examination, and had ordered an operation room to be ready and waiting for them. As the ambulance arrived at the hospital, Dylan's heart had been slowed down to almost stopping , to lower his blood pressure, and cool him down using ice packs.
Ian knew he was risking the boy's life or at least his health, and he was risking his career and reputation, as he cleaned up and dressed for the OR. At least his team was sure he would not make any mistakes, and the computed cranial tomography already showed the problem. Only a fairly small ruptured blood vessel, causing a slow bleeding, that had built up over the last 24 hours and now was building up a risky pressure in Dylan's brain. Ian performed his self developed and patented method of a minimal invasive surgery and closed the ruptured blood vessel as well as cleaning up the clogged blood that had caused Dylan's condition.
As the patient woke up, he saw his Mom's face first, and the face of Ian, both looking tired, Ian with a unruly three days beard.
" Oh my God... Doctor he's awake!" Ian had to grab Dylan's Mom before she could smother her son with kisses and squeeze him too hard, but as he had managed to calm her down, she sat by her son and fondled his face , her eyes full of tears. They had both waited by Dylan's bed for three full days.
" What happened, why am I here?" Dylan managed to ask. He did not feel any pain, but was hungry and thirsty, and disoriented. " Mom, there was a man talking to me.... didn't you tell me Dad died before I was born? He was there, with me, calmed me down and told me to go back were I needed to be, with you ...and with you!" He turned from his Mom to Ian as he said this.
Time seemed to stop for a second, and his Mom stopped breathing, as well as Ian. You could hear a pin drop as Ian sat on the other side of the bed and took Dylan's hand.
He slowly started to speak, but first had to swallow a huge lump in his throat, before he could form the words. Dylan's Mom simply stared at him, wide eyed, pale as if she had seen a ghost.
Ian found the courage to say: " You might have seen your Dad, my love. You were clinically dead for three minutes."
