Chapter 7
There were sirens everywhere, everywhere around me, along with the lights and the noise. My mind was blank; the only thing that registered was that it was raining. I thought it was a fitting end. Too many people left my life tonight, leaving me to grieve. I hated the idea. I was used to getting everything I wanted, but that didn't happen tonight. I wiped a tear from my eye and replayed tonight in my head.
Three Hours Earlier...
Instead of the limo I was used to, we were herded to the safe house in black bulletproof SUVs. During the ride someone whispered to me that we were getting closer to the safe house and that I should prepare for the worst.
I didn't know what to think; we had enough well trained killers to take out a whole police force, but we had no idea what we were walking into. One thing that was present in my mind was that this was not going to be a good evening. There was going to be too much blood spilled tonight and it was going to be on my hands.
"We're here Tyler." Kyle said to me.
I looked up at him and tried to smile, but it was a pretty lame attempt.
"Everything will be fine." He said kissing me.
The SUV pulled up into the circular drive. The SUV in front of us got out checked the area and then the one behind emptied and checked the area again. After they were finished the let us out and I was walked up the door.
The moment I put my hand on the door knob I could feel it. Everyone in there was dead. I broke down into tears and ran back to the car. Two agents stayed back with me while the rest entered the house, including Kyle.
After they were in the house for 10 minutes, the place erupted in gunfire. I was shoved into the SUV by one of the agents while the other one called for back up. It was happening. I hid at the bottom of the back seat. I covered my head and prayed that it would be over soon.
No such luck, apparently they had been waiting for us and were ready for our small army. They had the first group cornered in the house for at least 20 minutes. But as soon as back up arrived things shifted in our favor. All of the gunmen were caught in one room or dead.
For some reason I wanted to see the carnage. So I walked in while things were being wrapped up. I walked in and looked around. Most of the bodies were cleaned up, but the blood was still there. And there was lots of it.
I was careful not to step in any of it. There were also a lot of shell casings from the gun fire. I bent down to pick up one, when someone called my name.
I turned to see a man in a black mask holding a gun at my chest. I looked into his face and his eyes were blue. Crystal blue, I knew those eyes.
"Take off your mask Nate--I know it's you." I said, as I looked at my feet.
He snatched his mask off. "Always so smart you were Tyler. I could never out smart you or get the jump on you." He was angry--I could feel it radiating off of him.
"What are you talking about Nate?" I said, said as I began backing away.
"Stay right fucking there!" he screamed at me. "Stay right there." He cocked his head. "Why?" he asked me.
"What are you talking about?" I asked--I was terrified. This was not the same Nate that I was with for three years; this was not even the Nate I saw in that conference room in New York. There was something scary and different about this Nate.
"You released that information about me! Why?" he screamed!
"I didn't release anything." I said slowly.
"You fucking liar!" he said shooting a shot off. It just barely missed me.
I was crying now. "Nate, please, you have to believe me. I didn't release that information. I had no reason to do it." I said, as I continued to back up.
"I really loved you. I did. But I could be with and have you pay for everything. I am a man, Tyler. I am truly sorry for everything I did after I left, but you didn't have to do that, you just didn't." he said, as he came closer.
I wiped my tears with my hand. "Nate I didn't do anything like that." I said, as I continued backing up. All of a sudden I tripped over a dead body.
"You know what?" he asked as he stood over me. "If you don't want tell the truth, I was should just kill you right here." He said as he lifted the gun to my face.
I thought franticly, I had to do something. This was not how it was going to end for me. I was not going to be shot down. My hands darted all over the floor for a stick or something. It couldn't end like this. My hand found the body that I tripped over and I found his gun. I grabbed it and brought it to my lap. Thank God it was so dark in there and he couldn't see.
"Tell the truth and I won't kill you baby." He wiped the tears out of his eyes and brought the gun to his side. "Please just tell me that truth." He whispered to me.
"I am telling the truth." I whispered back.
"Fuck you!" He lifted the gun--everything was in slow motion. I lifted the gun in my hand to his torso and just unloaded the clip before he could get his shot off. The kickback from it was just about unbearable but I kept pulling the trigger long after Nate fell to the ground dead.
I was still pulling the trigger when Moore came and took the gun from me. "You ok?" he asked me.
I looked up at him and just stared.
"Ok, come on." he said lifting me and taking me out of the house.
He sat me on the steps of the house. Just then it started to rain. I grabbed his sleeve when Moore started to walk away.
"Where is everyone?" I asked.
He sighed. "Jamerson is dead and Kyle is at the hospital. He's in serious condition. I am going to get a doctor." He said.
"Son? Are you there?" The doctor brought me back to reality.
"How much time has gone by?" I asked.
"About an hour son," he looked at me confused.
"Tell me about Kyle!" I yelled.
"Right now, I am making sure you are ok." he tried to explain to me.
"I don't give a shit about me–how is Kyle?" I spat out.
The doctor look up at me and then to Moore. "Son I am afraid he's gone."
"No." I said standing and looking at Moore.
He didn't look me in the eye. "It's true kid."
"No. No." I said as my body began to shake with sobs. It was over. It was over before we got a chance to make a real start. For the first time in my life I cursed my life, my parents, my money--most of all I cursed myself. I had to get out of here and by here I meant my life.
I looked up at Moore and looked him in the eye. "It's time." I said.
"You can't be serious. They need to talk to you. You can't do it now." He said.
"You promised me." I said simply.
"But now? You can't do it tomorrow?" he asked.
I shook my head no.
He frowned. "Fine." He said turning his back to me.
I looked around and saw no one was looking. I took a deep breath and took off running. I ran to the gate, climbed out of it, and ran into the city lights of Paris. I ran for what seemed like hours, but I wasn't running from anyone. I was running from my life, from myself. From this night on, I am no longer Tyler Matthews. He died back in the safe house with everyone else that night. Tyler's dead.
