As they got close to Matt's house, he said "Hey, that's Joey's car. It looks like you'll get to meet everyone all at once Nick."

When they got into the house, Matt was suddenly tackled by his little brother. "Hi Andy. I haven't seen you for a while."

"You've been hiding from me! I'll bet you're scared that I'll beat you at Nintendo again!"

Matt laughed. "You're right. You are too good for me."

"Hi Andy." Nick said.

Matt looked up at Nick, and said "Sorry Nick. Andy, this is Nick Carter. He's a friend of mine."

Andy looked at Nick for a minute, and said, "You don't look tough either--I'll beat you too!"

Nick laughed. "I don't know about that--I'm pretty good."

Just then, Joey appeared. Matt said "Hi Joey. Where have you been hiding?"

"Hi Matt. I've been around. I hear you're the one who's hard to track down these days."

Nick walked over to Joey and stuck out his hand. "Hi Joey. I'm Nick Carter."

Joey shook Nick's hand. "It's nice to meet you Nick. I hear you've been slumming with my little bro here. I hope you're getting him into trouble."

They all laughed at that. "Is that you Matt?"

"Hi Mom. Yeah, it's me. Come on Nick, and meet my mom." The four of them went into the kitchen, where Matt's mom was just finishing getting dinner ready.

"Mom, this is Nick Carter."

"Nice to meet you Nick. Matt has told me all about you."

"All good I hope." Nick said. "It's nice to meet you."

"Dinner is ready. Everyone grab something, and let's go in to dinner."

They all made their way into the dining room, where Matt introduced Nick to his father. Dinner was the usual noisy affair, as you'd expect in a house with three boys. Mrs. Lawrence tried to make them be polite because Nick was there, but that plan soon backfired as Nick joined in.

When things had settled down a bit, and everyone had gotten something to eat, Mrs. Lawrence asked Nick whether he had any brothers or sisters.

"I've got four sisters and one brother." Nick said.

"Four sisters! Ick!" was Andy's comment.

Nick looked at Andy, and said, "You know, I'll bet Aaron is about your age. He's eleven now--how old are you?"

Andy looked surprised. "I'm ten." He looked suspicious. "Does he beat you at Nintendo?"

"Never" Nick said.

"I don't believe you. I can beat Joey and Matt."

"Okay, I'll prove it to you. After dinner, Matt and I will take on you and Joey. How's that?"

"You're on. Joey's better than Matt, so we'll win."

Matt stuck his tongue out at Andy. "Matt! Where are your manners?" Mrs. Lawrence said. "So, Nick. Do you get to see your family often?"

"Actually, not very much at all. I've been on the road with the band for the last 5 years. I've been home for a total of about two weeks in the last two years."

"That's terrible. You should really insist on more time with them. Family is important."

"I wish I could. Last time I saw Aaron, he'd grown so much, I really didn't recognize him at first."

Joey said, "You know, I spent a lot of time away when I was younger. I wish I'd been around more too. It was hard being away, all by myself."

"That part hasn't been too bad for me. Kevin has sort of looked after me, and Brian has been a great friend. Howie and AJ have been there too. We all get along pretty well. They're like brothers."

"But, Aaron needs you too you know" Matt said. "Do you call him?"

Nick looked a bit surprised. "Every once in a while. It' hard to track him down sometimes."

"So, how did the show go today Matt?"

Matt giggled. "It was actually pretty funny. Danielle was just a bit smitten with Nick."

Nick laughed. "Yeah. She made quite an entrance."

Matt laughed. "You see, she came running out of makeup introduce herself. The problem was, they weren't finished with her yet. Her hair was all over, and she had tissue paper stuck everywhere." That got a laugh from everyone.

"But the funniest thing was when Nick walked onto the stage. Before he could deliver his line, someone in the audience recognized him, and started screaming and jumping up and down. The look on Nick's face..." Matt lost it at this point and started laughing.

Nick smiled. "I got you back for that though."

That shut Matt up.

"How'd you do that?" Joey asked.

"Well, I went out and introduced myself to the audience. I calmed them down, and promised them autographs after the show. I made Matt come and give autographs too."

"Nick, I'd rather..." Matt said.

"Oh Matt. You're still embarrassed?" Nick smiled. "Well, the whole world knows now, so why not your family?"

Matt looked away. He could feel his face growing hot.

"One of the girls asked Matt whether he wore boxers or briefs. Matt didn't want to tell her, so I told her instead." Nick laughed. "You should have seen Matt! I think he wanted to crawl under a rock or something." Nick looked at Matt. "And he was blushing, just like he is now."

After dinner, the three brothers and Matt moved to the living room and got out the Nintendo. Nick quickly proved that he knew what he was doing. After a few games, it became clear that Nick was better than any of them. The pairing was actually pretty even. Andy had been right when he said that Matt wasn't as good as Joey.

Matt and Nick won the first two games. Andy and Joey won the next one. Matt stood up and said, "Does anyone want something to drink?"

"No thanks" Joey said.

"Nope" Andy said.

"Is there any coffee?" Nick said.

"My thoughts exactly" Matt said. "I'll go and make some. Try not to win without me, okay?" Matt went out to the kitchen. He found his mom there. "Hi mom. I'm just going to make some coffee. Do you want some?"

"You know it's too late for me to have coffee. I'll never sleep."

"Okay, it's your loss."

"You know, Nick is really nice."

"I know. You really didn't think I'd be friends with some druggy musician did you?"

"No dear, I guess I didn't. Still, it's nice to meet him for myself. Oh, I almost forgot. You got another parcel today. It was a big one. I put it into your room."

"Thanks Mom. That's probably the other package that Nick said he was going to send over."

Back in the living room, Nick was holding his own against Matt's brothers. In a sudden move, they ganged up on him and beat him.

"It looks like I need Matt's help against you two."

"It's late Andy. Time for bed." Mrs. Lawrence said, as she came into the room.

"Just one more game?" Andy pleaded.

"Some other time. You've got to be up early tomorrow, remember?"

Andy got up, knowing he wasn't going to win this one. "Thanks for the game Nick."

"Thank you Andy. It was fun. We'll have to do it again sometime."

"Good night Joey." Andy said.

"Sleep tight bro" Joey said. "I'll see you later." Andy and Mrs. Lawrence left the room.

Nick sat back. "I was hoping I'd get to meet you Joey. Matt talks about you all the time."

"Really?" Joey looked surprised.

"Why would that surprise you? I asked Matt who his friends were, and he said that you were the only person he really considered a friend. There are people at work and at college that he knows, but he doesn't hang out with them."

"It just surprises me. I guess we do hang out every once in a while. I never really thought about it. Matt really doesn't have many friends though." Joey looked thoughtful for a moment. "You know, he's never really had a close friend."

"That's what he said too. It seems strange to me. We've only known each other for a few days, but I think we're pretty close. It wasn't hard either--Matt's a neat guy."

"Yeah, he is. He's pretty shy though, and always seems to be busy working."

Matt appeared with two coffee mugs. "Just cream, right Nick?"

"That's right Matt. Thanks."

"So, what are you two talking about?"

"You, of course" Nick said. "What else would we talk about?"

"How about music? You know that Joey is a musician too? He's just released his second CD."

"Oh, that's right" Nick said. "Hey, Joey--I should set you up with Kevin. He knows lots about the business, and has lots of contacts. I know he'd be interested in swapping stories. He likes talking about all that stuff."

"What, you don't?" Joey said.

"Not really. I like singing and hanging with the guys. Touring is okay. The fans, and being away from friends and home is the pits. I really don't bother to follow all of the stuff that Kevin is always talking about."

"Well, you know, if you're going to introduce Joey to Kevin, you really should introduce me to the guys too." Matt said.

"That's right--we still haven't done that. What time is it? The guys are probably back by now. We could go over to the hotel now if you want."

"That sounds like a neat idea Nick" Matt said.

"Actually, I've got a late date tonight. I'd like to meet the guys sometime though." Joey said.

"Well, what are you doing tomorrow? We've got a concert tomorrow night. You could come for the concert, and hang out with us. We could all meet for lunch, then you could come along for sound checks and all that stuff."

Joey looked at Matt, and then said, "I could manage that, if you'd like to Matt."

"Sure. That sounds like fun."

"Well, I should get going" Joey said.

"Have fun on your date Joey" Matt said.

"Give me a call tomorrow, and let me know what the plan is. Okay Matt?"

"Sure."

Left alone now, Matt turned to Nick. "Do you want any more coffee?"

"No. Brian will be on my case if I keep him up all night." Nick chuckled. "Did that package arrive from Canada?"

"I'm not sure. Mom said something arrived--she put it in my room, but I haven't been in there to look."

"Well, let's go and see what they sent you."

Nick followed Matt into the kitchen, where they put their coffee mugs into the dishwasher. From there, they made their way to Matt's room.

"Wow, this is something else!" Nick said when they got to Matt's room. It was a large room with a double bed, large TV, stereo, and its own bathroom.

"It used to be Joey's before he moved out. It is nice and big."

"It's too neat for me. Did the maid come through today or something?"

"No, that's just me. I can't work when it's messy. Here's the package. It must be from you--it's from Toronto."

"That's it then. Come on, let's see what they sent you."

They opened the box, and found the expected CDs and videos. They also found posters, magazines, coffee mugs, refrigerator magnets, pens, pencils and t-shirts--exactly what you'd expect to find at a souvenir stand at a concert.

"Wow, they really did send one of everything. You could probably sell this for a lot of money--most of this stuff isn't available here." Nick said. "I wonder...yup, they even included these." Nick held up a package of official Backstreet Boys underwear.

Matt laughed. "Why would you guys have your own brand of underwear?"

"I don't know. It was one of the sillier things they tried. They made Brian model for it--see?" Sure enough, there was a picture of Brian on the package.

"That's wild." Matt said.

"Yeah. Kevin was really angry when they did that. He got into a big argument with management. I think he was right--marketing is all good, but it can go too far."

"Well, are you ready to go now?" Matt said.

"Sure, let's get out of here."

Nick and Matt said goodbye to Matt's parents, and were soon back at the hotel. The route was getting to be quite familiar to Matt now. They parked in the underground lot, and rode the elevator to the lobby. There, they switched to another bank of elevators, and went up to Nick's room.

Nick opened the door, and they went in. "It looks like Brian isn't here. They're probably all over in Kevin's room."

"Yikes, what a mess" Matt said. "How can you stand it?" The room was indeed rather messy, with clothing scattered all over.

"Well, I guess I made a bit of a mess this morning. Brian was still asleep when I got dressed, and I couldn't turn the light on." Nick looked a bit sheepish. "But, yeah. I am messy."

Matt just shook his head. "So, where's Kevin's room?"

"Just down the hall." They left Nick and Brian's room, and went down the hall a few doors. Nick knocked on the door.

After a minute, the door opened. Kevin said, "There you are Nick. We were starting to wonder where you'd gotten to."

"Hi Kev. I've been out with Matt. Matt, this is Kevin."

Matt and Kevin shook hands. "Come on in guys."

The rest of the guys were in the room, apparently watching TV. Nick introduced Matt to everyone.

"It's nice to meet you Matt. Nick has been talking about you ever since he met you. It's good to see exactly who it is he's talking about," Brian said.

"He's told me a lot about you guys too. I was starting to wonder if I'd ever get to meet you though."

"So, how did the show go today? That's where you went wasn't it?"

Nick spoke up. "It was fun, although it didn't go like I expected it to."

"Why, what happened?" Brian asked.

"Well, when they heard that Nick was coming to the show, the director wanted to put him into the show." Matt said.

"It was all Matt's fault." Nick said.

"Actually, it was all your fault. You called me in the middle of rehearsals. That's when they found out that you were coming."

Brian laughed. "You two sound like an old married couple--who cares who's fault it was? Did you get on the show Nick?"

"He did." Matt said. "It was pretty funny. When he walked onto the stage, some girls in the audience started screaming. The look on Nick's face..." Matt broke up laughing.

Nick laughed too. "I was surprised. It turned out okay though. I borrowed Kevin's technique, and calmed them down. That let us finish the show."

Kevin looked a bit surprised.

"And Danielle was funny. I've never seen her quite like that before." Matt said.

Nick smiled. "You know who Danielle is? She plays 'Topanga' on the show. Anyway, it seems that she's a fan. She made a rather undignified appearance when we got there this morning."

"She was in such as rush to meet Nick, she came out of makeup looking a bit messy. She had bits of tissue everywhere, and her hair was a disaster." Matt said. Everyone had a laugh at that.

"Sometimes the fans are a bit crazy" Brian said.

Nick giggled. "The best was when we were signing autographs."

"Nick, don't" Matt said.

Nick smiled at Matt. "One of the girls asked Matt whether he wore boxers or briefs. You should have seen the look on his face. He was bright red and didn't seem to know what to say. So I told her what Matt was wearing white CK briefs."

"Oh, Nick!" Matt could feel himself blushing. Everyone had a good laugh at this.

"Well, at least you weren't wearing Backstreet underwear!" Brian said to Matt. "That would be quite a scandal."

Matt looked at Nick. "I think you've enjoyed this a bit too much. First the fans, then my family and now these guys."

"Hey, it's a funny story." Nick said. "Anyway, it's probably all over the web by now. It's hardly a secret."

"I still don't see why your fans would be interested in me. I don't sing or anything."

"I told you that already. When I told the audience that you were my friend, that'll be enough for them to start after you too."

"Nick's right" Howie said. "I'll bet it'll be on the TV tomorrow. If you were to come to the concert tomorrow, I'll bet the fans would want a piece of you."

"That reminds me. I invited Matt and his brother to hang out with us tomorrow. I thought maybe we could all meet for lunch, then Matt and Joey could come to the arena for sound check." Nick said.

"Sure Nick. That sounds okay." Kevin said.

"Actually, I think you and Joey have a lot in common Kevin. Joey is a musician too. He'd like to talk business with you. He's even plays the piano, and lifts weights like you do."

"Even better" Kevin said. "It'll be nice to talk with someone other than you bozos."

They arranged to meet for lunch tomorrow at the hotel. Kevin phoned the front desk to arrange for lunch in one of the hotel's meeting rooms. Matt stayed for a little while longer, but it had been a long day.

"I think I'd better get home while I'm still awake Nick" Matt said.

Nick yawned. "So soon? It's still early."

"Then why are you yawning too? I'll see you tomorrow."

"Okay, I guess I am tired too. Thanks for everything today. It was really fun."

"Yeah, it was." Turning to the rest of the guys, Matt said "See you all tomorrow."

Everyone said good night to Matt, and he left. He listened to the rest of the Backstreet Boys CD on the way home, and soon found himself humming along. The music made it easier for him to stay awake on the drive. When he got home, he was beat and went to bed immediately.
