BoysLife -- Episode Eight

Jason Harmon lay wide awake on the bed in the guest room of his sister's house. He had come there in the middle of the night, and he hadn't had more than an hour's sleep. His life had just been tossed through some major waves and he had just decided to break up with his boyfriend, Trevor Keiser, whom he had been dating for about a year. Within the past two weeks, things had gotten crazy. Trevor had been doing a lot of sneaking around, lying, and Jason was starting to feel used. He just didn't want that kind of a relationship anymore.

When he had arrived during the night, his sister woke up and let him into the house. She knew what was going on, but she didn't ask any questions.

Now it was morning, and Jason could hear Sabrina talking on the phone in another room. He slowly got out of the bed and went into the kitchen, where she was. He sat down at the table and within moments Sabrina was off the phone.

"Did you sleep?" She asked.

He shook his head, "Not really."

She came over and sat next to him. "Did things get that bad Jay?" She asked, putting her hand on top of his, which was resting on the table.

"I can't be with him anymore," Jason said. "I needed to get away, and your place was closer than Mom's." He paused. "I hope you weren't too freaked out last night."

She gave him a small smile. "I was a little worried when a car pulled into the driveway at 2:30 in the morning," She said. "But I'm glad you're here."

"I just need some time to think things through," Jason said.

"You're welcome here as long as you want to stay," Sabrina said.

"I'll need some of my things," Jason said. "But I don't really want to go back there right now. He might..."

"I'll go over for you," Sabrina said, cutting him off.

"Would you?" Jason asked, a relieved smile on his face. "Oh that would be great!" He paused. "But then they'd know where I was at."

"They probably already know," Sabrina said. "And I think that both Perry and Josh will understand." She stood. "And I will make it clear to Trevor that I don't want him over here."

Jason sighed. "This is so insane. Why do things like this have to happen?"

"We'll probably never know," Sabrina said. "Would you like some breakfast?"

"No," Jason said, shaking his head. "I'm not hungry. But thanks."

"All right," Sabrina said. "You know where things are, and you can get it when you want it."

"Okay," Jason said. "Do you have to work today?"

"No, I called off," Sabrina said. "I want to be here with you."

"You didn't have to do that," Jason said.

"Of course I did," Sabrina said. "I'm your sister."

"I love you," Jason said, standing. "I think I'll call Mom and let her know what's going on."

"I'm sure she'd appreciate that," Sabrina said. "I'll go ahead over to your place then."

"Okay," Jason said. Sabrina gave him a quick hug. "Don't get into it with Trevor too bad," He told her.

"He knows better than to mess with me," Sabrina said. "It'll be all right." She left the room.

Jason took a deep breath and then picked up the phone and dialed his parents' number.

Josh Maxwell went into the bedroom of his roommate Perry Adamson. He had waken up to a completely quiet house, and neither Jason or Trevor were there.

"Perry," Josh said, shaking Perry gently.

Perry slowly opened his eyes. "Josh?"

"I think something's up," Josh said. "Both Jason and Trevor are gone and both of their cars are gone, and there's a bit of a mess in their room."

Perry sat up in his bed. "Maybe they both just went out Josh." He looked at Josh, who was shaking his head. "Well did Jason leave a note then?" Perry asked. "He usually does if he's going somewhere and he didn't tell us about it."

"I didn't see anything," Josh said.

Perry stood and followed Josh down the stairs. "I'm sure it's nothing major," He said.

"Did you hear noises last night?" Josh asked as they went into the kitchen.

"Nah, I was out cold," Perry said.

"I thought I heard yelling," Josh said. "And things being thrown around."

Perry shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know Josh."

"I'm worried about Jay," Josh said. "I've just got this weird feeling." He thought for a moment. "I'm going to call Sabrina and see if she's seen him this morning."

Perry poured himself a glass of juice as Josh picked up the phone and dialed the number.

"It's busy," Josh said, hanging up. "I guess I'll try again in a little while."

"You really think that something's wrong?" Perry asked.

Josh nodded. "I don't know what it could be."

Just then, the doorbell rang. Josh raised an eyebrow at Perry and then hurried out of the room. Perry followed him close behind.

Josh opened the door to find their friend Amy Martin standing there.

"Hey guys!" She said. She took one look at their faces and asked, "What's wrong?"

She came in and Josh filled her in on what had been going on.

"Oh my," She said. "You guys have been on a wild ride then these past few days!"

"That's an understatement," Perry said.

"Do you want me to come back some other time?" Amy asked.

"No," Josh said, putting his hand on her arm. "You're more than welcome here Amy. I'm glad you stopped by actually." He glanced over at Perry. "A true woman's opinion is always welcomed around here, right Perry?"

Perry just shrugged.

Amy gave a small laugh. "See I am good for something!" She said.

"I think I'll go try calling Sabrina again," Josh said, going into the other room.

"He's really shook up about this," Amy said, going into the living room with Perry and sitting on the sofa.

Perry nodded. "Yeah he is."

"What about you?" Amy asked him. "How are you handling all of it?"

"It's not any of my business really," Perry said. "Jason and Trevor are having some problems, and I don't really want to get into the middle of it."

"Did you talk to Jason?" Amy asked.

Perry shook his head. "I couldn't. It just wasn't the right time."

"Don't let this get away from you Perry," Amy said. "Jason had a lot to deal with right now and with you there for him..."

"I don't want to add to his confusion," Perry cut her off. "He knows I'm here when he needs me. And I want to talk to him, once this mess with Trevor gets cleared up."

Josh came back into the room. "Jason's over at Sabrina's."

"Did you talk to him?" Amy asked.

"No I talked to my Aunt Bonnie actually," Josh said. "I tried calling Sabrina's and the line was busy so I called my Aunt and she was on the other line with Jason."

"How is he?" Perry asked.

"He needs some time to think," Josh said. "Obviously he and Trevor decided to break up." He paused, and then sat next to Amy on the sofa. "Sabrina's on her way over to get some of Jason's clothes and stuff."

No one said anything for a moment.

Amy finally broke the silence. "I hope everything works out."

Josh and Perry exchanged glances. "Yeah," Josh said softly.

Sabrina was in Jason's room with Perry, putting some of Jason's clothes into a suitcase. Amy had taken Josh out to the grocery store to get some things, and to try and get his mind off the situation.

"So you think I should stop by and talk to him?" Perry asked her from inside the walk-in closet.

"Yes," She said, coming to stand in the doorway. "Jason really cares about you Perry. He wouldn't have made it this far without your friendship."

Perry shook his head and let out a small laugh. "Why does it feel like everyone's pushing the two of us together for some reason?"

"Because it's so obvious!" Sabrina said, smiling.

"Has he talked to you about it?" Perry asked.

"Yeah, a little," Sabrina said. "I think you guys have been through a lot together and he really feels closer to you now."

"Hmm..." Perry said, handing Sabrina one of Jason's favorite shirts. "Maybe I will stop over this evening then."

"That would be very nice," Sabrina said. "I won't even tell Jason I practically begged you to come."

"Gee thanks," Perry said. He stopped, thinking he had heard the front door closing. "Did you hear that?" He asked.

Sabrina shook her head, stepping out of the closet. Perry was right behind her, walking out of the bedroom, to the top of the stairs. He looked down and could see Trevor on the first floor, looking around.

"You decided to come back?" Perry called out.

Trevor jumped a little and looked up at Perry. "I... I didn't know anyone was here," He said, starting up the stairs. He stopped when he saw Sabrina standing behind Perry. "Oh... uh, hey there Sabrina," He said. She didn't say anything to him. He came to the top of the stairs and stopped in front of them. "I guess I should tell you guys now."

"Tell us what?" Perry asked.

Trevor cleared his throat. "I'm moving out. I'm going to live in Chicago."

Perry looked over at Sabrina, who had a look of pure attitude and disgust on her face.

"So that's it Trevor?" She asked. "You throw my brother around, and since he doesn't want to play the game anymore you just up and leave to Chicago?"

"What do you want me to do Sabrina?" Trevor asked. "I'm sorry all this had to happen, but I've found someone else now."

"I think I'm going to go start my laundry now," Perry said, moving past Trevor and down the stairs. Trevor took a glance at Sabrina and then went into his bedroom.

She followed and stood just inside the room, leaning on the door. "Why Trevor?" She asked.

"Please don't give me the guilt trip," Trevor said. "I've had it for the past two months now."

"Two months?" Sabrina asked. "How could you let it go this long?"

"I didn't want to hurt Jason," Trevor said. "But I met someone else, and I can't deny my feelings for him."

Sabrina shook her head.

"Don't try to understand it," Trevor said. "I can't even understand it myself. Just let me go and be out of Jason's life." He paused and looked her in the eye. "Let him and Perry see if they have a chance to be happy together."

"Trevor I..." Sabrina said.

"I'm sorry," He said, cutting her off. "This is the way it has to be. I'll be out of the house today, and I leave for Chicago on Wednesday."

"I thought you loved Jason," Sabrina said.

"Don't you think this hurts me?" Trevor asked. "Don't you think it's just as hard on me as it is for him? I didn't choose to fall in love with someone else, it just happened. Let's just move on Sabrina."

She didn't say anything.

"I'm taking my stuff today and staying at a hotel in the city," Trevor said. He came over to her and handed her an envelope. "Give this to Jason for me."

She took it, a tear falling down her cheek.

"Goodbye Sabrina," Trevor said, turning away from her and beginning to pack his things.

Amy and Josh returned to the house about five minutes after Trevor left. Sabrina explained what had happened.

"So that's it?" Josh asked. "He just leaves us to pay his share of the bills?"

"You guys could look for another roommate," Amy said.

"We only have three bedrooms," Josh said. "No one ever thought Jason and Trevor would split up."

"We'll think of something," Perry said. "Do you think Jason will come back home now Sabrina?"

"I have no idea," Sabrina said. "I think he just wants this time to himself."

"I know how he feels," Amy said. "Listen guys, I think I'm going to go now. I have to work closing shift tonight."

"Yeah I think I might work that same shift," Josh said. "I haven't really looked at my schedule."

"I think you might," Amy said. She gave the guys and Sabrina hugs. "Give me a call and let me know what's going on, okay?"

"We will," Perry assured her. She grabbed her purse off the kitchen table and left.

"I suppose I should finish getting Jason's things," Sabrina said.

"Do you need me to help you?" Perry asked.

She shook her head. "No I think I got enough for him to get by with. I have a feeling he'll be back soon." She gave Perry a small smile and then she went out of the room.

Josh began to put away the groceries and Perry began to help him. The phone rang, and Perry, who was standing right next to it, answered it. It was Mark for Josh. He gave the phone to Josh.

"Mark, it's so good to hear your voice," He said, going into the other room. "I've had an interesting morning."

"Really?" Mark asked. "I couldn't stop thinking about you."

"That's really sweet," Josh said. He told Mark what had happened between Jason and Trevor and how Trevor had moved out. "I don't know what we're going to do. It's not like he gave us any warning or anything. He just left."

"I could sure get out of my parents house," Mark said.

"I'd love to ask you to come move in," Josh said. "But do you really want to do the whole living together thing? Could that have been what tore apart Jason and Trevor?"

"I think it's different for everyone," Mark said.

"Yeah, I agree," Josh said. "Let's just give it some time okay?"

"All right," Mark said.

"But you would be willing and ready if I asked you, right?" Josh asked.

"Yeah, of course," Mark said.

"Great," Josh said.

"Hey listen," Mark said. "What are you doing tonight?"

"I think I work," Josh said, going out of the room and up the stairs. "Let me go check my schedule."

"I was thinking I'd bring over a movie and we could watch it together," Mark said. "It would be nice to have just a relaxed evening." He paused. "I could come over after you get off if you want."

"That sounds great," Josh said. He found his schedule. "Yup, I do work. Closing shift."

"Okay," Mark said. "I'll just meet you at the house after you get off then."

"I'll be looking forward to it," Josh said. "I gotta go."

"Oh all right," Mark said. "I'll see you later then."

"Sure will," Josh said.

"I love you," Mark said.

"Love you too Mark," Josh said. "Goodbye."

Jason had just hung up with his mother when Sabrina came back.

"Mother is coming over," He said to his sister, taking his suitcase from her.

"Oh good," Sabrina said, shutting the front door behind her. "I haven't seen her in a while." She went into the kitchen while Jason put his bag in the guest room. "Did she tell you how Josh was trying to track you down this morning?" She called out to him.

"Yeah," He called back. Then he came into the room. "How did it go over there?"

"It was different," Sabrina said. "Amy stopped by and took Josh out to the grocery store. And Trevor came while I was getting your clothes."

"Oh did he?" Jason asked, raising his eyebrows.

Sabrina nodded and pulled the envelope out of her purse. "He told me to give this to you."

Jason took it from her. "Thanks Sabrina."

"I didn't tear him up too bad," She said to him, taking a glass out of the cabinet and pouring herself a glass of iced tea.

Jason didn't say anything, his eyes focused on the letter, still unopened, in his hand. "I wonder what he has to say to me," He thought out loud.

"Do you want me to leave you alone to read it?" Sabrina asked.

"No," Jason said, shaking his head. "I don't want to read it now. I'll look at it later." He left the room, and returned a moment later, without the letter. "You know what?" He said.

"What's that?" Sabrina asked.

"I think I am a little hungry now," Jason said. I think I'll get something to eat." He opened her refrigerator. "A nice grilled ham and cheese sounds nice." He looked at his sister. "Would you like me to make you one?"

Sabrina laughed. "Sure, that sounds nice Jay."

"What's so funny?" He asked, pulling a pan out of the cabinet.

"You," Sabrina said. "You're crazy Jason, you know that?"

"And I love you too sis," He said, smiling back at her.

As Jason was cooking, their mother came. He gave her one of the sandwiches and then made another for himself. The three of them sat together and ate lunch and talked. It was one of those "family bonding" moments.

"So Jason," Mrs. Harmon said, as Sabrina cleared their dishes. "What are you going to do?"

"Do?" Jason asked. "There's nothing really to do. I have to move on with my life. I'm not going to die without Trevor. I learned that from his being away."

"I'm glad you're not so dependant on him anymore," Mrs. Harmon said. "You used to make yourself so miserable without him around. You guys were always together; you never saw the two of you apart. It wasn't healthy Jason."

"I know that now Mother," Jason said.

She gave him a motherly smile. "So what is this I hear about you and Perry?" She asked him.

"How did you know about that?" He asked, a bit embarrassed. "Has Sabrina been telling all my secrets?"

"I haven't said a word!" His sister piped up.

His mother laughed softly. "She didn't tell me, I'm your mother Jason, I know these things." She looked him in the eye. "So you two are becoming quite close?"

"I guess you could say that," Jason said. "I mean, I was there for him when he went through his whole ordeal with Wade, and he was there for me when I was acting all crazy because Trevor was gone. We just had time to really become close friends."

"I think that's really sweet," His mother said. "You two would make a cute couple."

"Mom!" Jason said, his face turning red.

"Wow mother!" Sabrina added. "I didn't think I would ever hear you talk like that!"

"You two underestimate me," She said to them. "I know that Jason's lifestyle is the way he chooses it to be. And if this makes him happy then I am fully supportive, even though I may not personally like it or agree with it."

"Thanks Mother," Jason said. "That really means a lot."

"I know," His mother said. She looked at her watch. "Oh my, I need to run. I am meeting your father somewhere and I will be late if I don't get going." She stood and Jason stood with her. "Now listen," She said, taking his hand. "Don't hesitate to call me if you need anything, okay?"

He nodded.

"Anything at all, you hear me?" She asked.

"Yes I hear you Mother," Jason said. "I promise to call you the first time I find myself lacking or needing something."

"That's what I like to hear," She said with a smile. She gave him a hug and kiss and then hugged and kissed Sabrina. "You all will have to stop over this week sometime for dinner. It's been simply forever since all of us had dinner together as a family."

"I think I am open on Friday," Sabrina said.

"I might be, let me check," Jason said. "I'll let you know."

His mother nodded. "All right. I love you guys. I'll talk to you soon!" She walked out of the room.

"Tell Dad I said hello!" Sabrina called after her.

"I'll do that sweetheart!" Her mother called back. Then they heard the front door open and close again, and soon after her car pulling out of the driveway.

"Well that was nice," Sabrina said after a moment.

"Yeah I am glad she came by," Jason said. His mother never stopped surprising him. He didn't know what he would do without her.

Later that evening, as Sabrina and Jason were sitting down to dinner, the doorbell rang.

"Why don't you go get that Jay?" Sabrina called from the kitchen. Jason was in the dining room, lighting candles on the table.

"All right," He said, going to the door. He opened it to see Perry standing there, looking very nice in a pair of gray khakis, and one of Jason's shirts. He held a rose in his hand, and as soon as he saw Jason he smiled.

"Hey Jay," He said softly.

Jason looked at him with a playful grin on his face. "So now that I'm out of the house you go and raid my closet?" He asked.

Perry shrugged. "I wanted to look extra special to come over and see you."

Jason smiled. "That's so sweet."

Perry held out the rose to him. Jason took it and stepped forward, giving Perry a hug. They held each other for a long time, and then finally Jason let go.

"Is everything okay Jay?" Perry asked slowly.

Jason nodded. "I'm all right."

"Who is it?" Sabrina called out.

"Come on in," Jason said, letting Perry in and shutting the door behind them. "Somehow I get the feeling she didn't need to ask me who it was, she already knows you were coming over."

"You see right through us Jay," Perry said.

As Perry and Jason entered the dining room, Sabrina entered from the other door, carrying her lasagna she had made.

"Perry!" She said, smiling. "It's so nice to see you!"

"I was wondering why you were making that big old thing of lasagna," Jason said. "I knew you weren't just doing it because it's one of my favorites."

"What on earth are you talking about?" Sabrina asked innocently, winking at Perry, who laughed.

Jason just shook his head, a grin on his face. "I've had too much excitement for the past few days. I don't need to be down anymore."

"That's right!" Sabrina said. "Besides, there is nothing wrong with inviting a friend over for a nice dinner."

"Of course not," Jason said. The three of them sat down, and soon they were eating, laughing, and Jason did not think of the whole Trevor ordeal once.

After dinner, Sabrina announced that she was going out somewhere.

"Oh, I guess I'll get going then too," Perry said, standing from the table.

"No, stay!" Sabrina said, taking Perry's plate away from him. "You and Jason spend some time together, I am sure you guys can find something to do."

Perry and Jason simply looked at each other as Sabrina quickly cleared the table, and was soon gone.

"Why do I get the feeling I've been set up?" Jason asked, as he and Perry went out to the back deck to sit. It was a cool evening, and Sabrina had one of those lounge sofas on her deck. Perry sat next to Jason on it.

"She did ask me to come to dinner Jay," Perry said. "But she didn't tell me about her little disappearing act."

"It's okay," Jason said. "I'm used to her tricks I guess."

Neither of them said a word. Then at the same time they both spoke.

"Jason, there's something..."

"Perry I need to tell you..."

The stopped, and laughed. "You go first," Jason said.

"Okay," Perry said. He gently took Jason's hand in his. Jason didn't resist, and even gave Perry a small smile.

"I've been thinking a lot about me and you the last couple of days Jason," Perry said.

"Really?" Jason asked, his eyebrows raising.

Perry nodded. "I wasn't sure if I should talk to you about it or not, it felt so foolish to me at first." He paused. "I know I told you how much it meant to me to have you by my side through my whole thing with Wade and all."

"Yeah," Jason said.

"Well, it's kind of more than that," Perry said. "I didn't realize how much I'd grow to care about you Jay. I didn't know I would start having these feelings..." He trailed off, not knowing what else to say.

"I know how you feel," Jason said softly.

"You do?" Perry asked.

"When this thing with Trevor was going on, I didn't think about anything but spending time with you and getting to know you better," Jason said. "Somehow in my heart I knew he was cheating on me, something just didn't feel right to me anymore." He looked into Perry's eyes. "But being with you made me feel right again."

Perry was silent for a moment. "I don't know what to say Jason," He said quietly. "I want to be with you. I want to share memories with you. I didn't know this was going to happen..."

Their kiss was one that sort of just happened. As they talked, they had been moving closer to each other, and at that moment, Jason leaned forward and kissed Perry lightly on the lips. At first they kissed lightly, their lips gently brushing against each others. But then Perry wrapped his arms around Jason, pulling him closer and they began to kiss more passionately.

When they finally parted, Jason put his head on Perry's shoulders. They were both breathing heavy, their hearts beating like crazy.

"Please come home Jay," Perry whispered. "I know we can make it through this. I don't want to lose you now."

"Don't worry," Jason said, looking up at Perry with a loving sparkle in his eye. "I'm not going anywhere."

And they kissed again.
