The Cabin by the Lake part II Chapter 1

Judy Clark said, "Kyle and Dennis, I would like for you to meet Mrs. Clara Jones, Joel and Jeremy's aunt. Boys do you realize that it has been almost 4 weeks since you became domestic partners?"

"Oh, you've got to be kidding. It was just yesterday. Judy, I guess you know you just about gave both of us a heart attack when you called and told us were coming out on very important business. We just knew you were coming to get the boys," said Dennis. "We have developed a very strong bond with them and love them dearly. We're willing to fight the US Army to keep them."

"Just the opposite! All the paper work has been turned over to the juvenile court and we are just waiting for a court date. Remember when we came out for your celebration, I told you that a relative wanted to meet the two of you. Well, guys, here she is. By the way where are the boys?" asked Judy.

"They're down at the Bed and Breakfast. Loretta makes cookies everyday and the boys think they have to be there to help her as if she can't do it by herself. I'm not sure how much help they are but we keep a good supply of the cookies," replied Kyle.

"So if you don't mind, I'll go get the boys and have them show me the animals at the barn. We'll be gone for about 30 minutes. So Aunt Clara, Kyle and Dennis are yours. If they give you any sass just turn them over you knee and use a wooden spoon to paddle their butts but good. Later!" Judy said and walked out the door, laughing.

"I know that the two of you are dying of curiosity. I'm not here to try to stop the adoption. If fact, I'd like to help you all that I can. There are a couple of cousins who will probably fight the adoption in the courts. They're just after Mom and Dad's money and just may get it, depending on how the judge rules."

"My parents were actually quite well off plus they had a couple of life insurance policies naming my sister, the boys' mother, and me as beneficiaries. So money is not a problem. However, Mom and Dad didn't have a will. Mom had written one in longhand but never took any legal means to make it legal. There were no witnesses. According to Mom my sister and I were to share equality. My lawyer has told me legally, we were the only legal heirs. However, the boys could be declared as heirs, also. Right now, I'm the sole heir but all of this may change, when we go to court. It will depend of how strong of a case the cousins make and if they get the boys."

"The cousins are going to try to get custody of the boys and, therefore, go after the money plus that belonging of the Joel and Jeremy's Dad and grandparents. So that'is where we are. I'd take the boys myself, but I've six children of my own and I lost my husband two years ago to cancer. So my taking them is almost completely out of the question. However, if it looks like the cousins may get the boys, then I will petition to get custody of them. I would drop my effort to get custody of the boys after the cousins are out of the picture. The court may be reluctant to give them to me given the size of my own family but I am the closest living relative."

"Here is what I'm proposing. I'm going to petition to have the courts declare me sole heir and put the estate in probate. Therefore, I should receive the entire estate. This will remove the incentive for the cousins of trying to obtain custody of Joel and Jeremy. If the cousins do happen to get the boys, then they will go after the money from both sides. If and when, I win, I'll put one half of it in a trust fund for Joel and Jeremy and since they're the only heirs on their dad`s side they will get that as well," said Aunt Clara. "If the two of you are given the opportunity to adopt the boys, then we have a whole new ball game. One where we can all come out winners. I would say we are in the ninth ending and we need a grand slam to win."

"Have you talked with your lawyer about all of this? I'd hate to let the cousins get a foot in the door through some screwy loophole," Kyle replied. "Aunt Clara, I think you should take the whole estate for yourself. You are going to have a rough time raising all those children by yourself. Joel and Jeremy will never want for anything. Dennis and I both have a rather large bank account each. In fact, I would say we are very well off. Rich by some people's standards. Do you have your lawyer's phone number with you?"

"Yes, I do. I see the need to contact him and very soon. Time is not on our side. I'll give him a call now," said Aunt Clara.

"I'll show you into the den and you can make your call in there. Use our phone. It's not long distance. The cell reception is not always the best out here. The reception comes and goes. What is a hot spot may turn only lukewarm," Dennis stated.

The boys came running through the door shouting at the same time. "Hey, boys. Wait a minute. One at a time and soften your voices a little. Aunt Clara is on the phone. Now what were you trying to tell us?" asked Dennis.

"Sally's puppies have their eyes open and are running around all over the place," Jeremy said.

"We put them in the shed and shut the door. We didn't want one of them to get lost or hurt," declared Joel.

"You can bet that Sally is going to take care of those pups. She wouldn't let anything happen to them. What did you do with Judy? Did you lock her in the shed with the pups?" laughed Kyle.

"No, they didn't. I'm getting too old to keep up with two small boys who have more energy than they know what to do with," said Judy.

"You have several new additions in the barn that I haven't seen before. So I just took my time enjoying them. Loved all the babies and of course the boys had to feed the orphaned calf. I even got to hold the bottle some. After they left, I fed him again. Farm life is all new to me, I grew up in the city," Judy declared.

"That little calf gets fed every time some one gets near him. He probably drinks more milk than if he had a mother. Which is okay, because we never use all the milk that we get. He is becoming a little roly-poly and a real big pet. We need to get him out on the farm in Christmas Valley. So far we just haven't had the heart to part with him," declared Dennis.

Aunt Clara came out of the den with a big smile on her face. "The lawyer was very please with all the information that I had for him. He would like to meet with the two of you, and Judy tomorrow if at all possible. He wants to have our game plan down pat and plug any loop-holes. He would like to take you as clients if you need him."

"Kyle and Dennis, do you have a woman that comes in do housework, cook, clean or what ever. My lawyer thinks that It would be a good idea to have a woman in the household and this should help make a good impression on the judge."

"No, we don't. We haven't even discussed this. So if you have someone in mind we would appreciate any help that you could give us and that goes for you also, Judy. We do have our own lawyer, and we will give him call him before we can give you our decision. In fact, Kyle, why don't you give him a call and I will rustle up some lunch. If Jeremy and Joel didn't fill up on cookies, they should be starved to death."

"Yes, I do. I have a good friend who had to retire because of health problems. She had a defibrillator/heart pump implanted. She is physically able now to lead a normal life and can cook, clean, chase kids, or what ever. Right now she is working part time helping home school the neighbor kids. She has lost her house and is in dire need of some financial income and a place to live," said Aunt Clara.

"Guys, I know this woman and she would be a good addition to this household. She would be a mother for all four of the little boys, here," Judy said laughing.

"I'm on my way to make the phone call. The kids aren't the only ones starved!" Kyle exclaimed.

"Hey, Boys! What do you want for lunch and no you can't have pizza. I swear, Aunt Clara, they would eat pizza for every meal, if we would let them."

"Sounds just like home," Aunt Clara said with a big grin.

"How about hotcakes if we can't have pizza," replied Joel.

"Aunt Clara and Judy, you get the finally vote," said Dennis.

"Hotcakes sound good to me," said Judy.

"I agree," responded Aunt Clara.

"Aunt Clara, why don't you give your friend a call and maybe we could meet with her tomorrow while we are in town meeting with the lawyer." Dennis said.

Kyle came into the room. "Aunt Clara, I need the phone number of your lawyer and his name. Our lawyer is going to give him a call and arrange a meeting for all of us.

The lawyer called back and Kyle told Dennis that he had arranged an appointment in his office tomorrow at 2:00.

Aunt Clara returned from making her call. "Good news, I set up a meeting with my friend at 10:00 in Judy's office. It appears that we will have a busy day. I heard about the 2:00 appointment as I was coming out of the den and yes, I have it free.

"I'll have to do a little juggling but that is no problem," said Judy. "Aunt Clara, are you about ready to return to the big city right after lunch? We can continue this little chat tomorrow."

"You bet! I'm just waiting for the chauffeur. I just don't know what is taking her so long!" laughed Aunt Clara.

"Aunt Clara, you don't have a chauffeur. You came with Judy," remarked Joel.

"You are right. What you don't know is that Judy does a little moonlighting on the side. When she is not in the office, she is a chauffeur. I try to get her to clean my house. She just refuses to do so. I don't know why because I have told her she wouldn't have to do windows!" laughed Aunt Clara, giving Joel a great big hug.

"I want one too!" Jeremy said running over and throwing his arms around Aunt Clara.

"I want one, also," said Dennis.

"You're to big to get a hug. Hugs are just for little people," said Jeremy.

"Hey, I'll remember that the next time you want a hug."

"Just kidding,! You can have all the hugs you want," responded Jeremy.

"Kyle and Dennis, I had my doubts until I came out and met you. It is really easy to see how you feel toward the boys and how they feel about you. I hope that you can get approval and adopt the kids. They need a place where they can get a lot of love and affection. I know they would get it here. This house if overflowing with a warm glow and love is everywhere."
