The Cabin by the Lake part II

Chapter 2

The guys from the lake arrived at Judy's office a little before 10:00. When they walked into the waiting room, a woman was playing the piano. Joel and Jeremy immediately ran over to her and both starting crying.

She started to stop but Joel begged her to continue. "Our grandmother played the same song on her piano. We thought that she had returned but she can't because she was killed in an accident and she is in heaven now. I bet she is playing for all the angels," Joel said.

"Boys, would you like to sit on the piano bench with me. If you know the song, you can sing along with me. I bet you both are very good singers."

Kyle and Dennis took a step toward the boys but Judy touched them on the arm and shook her head no. After playing a short introduction, she and the boys started singing `Yankee Doodle' Kyle, Dennis, Judy, and Aunt Clara all sang along with her.

When she finished playing, Jeremy asked, "Do you know `Puff the Magic Dragon'?" She didn't answer and just started playing and again everyone started singing.

When they reached the end of the song, Aunt Clara said, "Boys, I think we had better stop for now because we do have some business to discuss. First of all, introductions are in order. This is my very good friend, Patsy Johns. Pat, I would like for you to meet Joel and Jeremy, my nephews. This is Dennis and Kyle, the couple who plan on adopting Joe and Jeremy."

Joel and Jeremy grabbed her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Dennis and Kyle walked up and Pat extend her hand. Dennis said, " We are hugger not shakers." Both Kyle and Dennis gave her a big hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Thanks, for that grand way you welcomed us. The boys, Dennis and I were all a little up tight but you certainly put us at ease," said Kyle.

"I have a little confession, Aunt Clara is the one who suggested that I play the boys' favorite song. You see I was also tied in knots and it was a very good way to relieve some of the tension," said Pat.

"Pat, I assume that Aunt Clara has filled you in on all the details of why we are here. I think that you should know up front that Kyle and I are domestic partners, which means we are gay. I certainly hope that this won't be a stumbling block for you," Dennis stated.

"Dennis, you and Kyle being partners does not trouble me one bit. I just hope me having six toes on my left foot doesn't bother you," laughed Pat.

"Pat, do you really have six toes on your left foot. Can I see them?" said Jeremy all excited.

Pat looked toward Kyle and Dennis for guidance. "Pat, this is your problem and now it is up to you to solve it. I think I am with Jeremy. I would like to see it also!" exclaimed Kyle.

Pat didn't say anything and just started removing her shoe and sock. "Okay, Jeremy you get first peek and then you Kyle. The rest of you close you eyes. Remember, just look and no touch."

"Pat, you cheated! You don't have six toes. You just painted one on you big toe!" shouted Jeremy.

Laughing Pat said, "Hey, Guys! I got you this time."

Kyle replied, "Chalk one up for your side, but we will get even, right Jeremy?"

"You bet! We'll get you big time!" giggled Jeremy.

"Pat, you're just what we were looking for. I think you will fit right into this family. I don't know how much Judy and Aunt Clara have told you but Kyle and I run a very successful wilderness packing operation called The Wilderness Experience located at Elk Lake. Therefore, during the summer we will be gone a lot, some times we may be gone for several days. We will take the boys with us most of the time, however, the rest of the time they will be left in your care. When you don't have the boys, you will have free time. You can go shopping, visiting, come with us, or whatever turns you on. Your main responsibility will be the boys but you can cook, help around the house or whatever. You decide and if we ask you do something, you can always say no if you want. No, you won't have to do windows or wash dished by hand. What I am saying is the job is yours if you want it. If not, thank you," said Dennis.

"I made up my mind as soon as Aunt Clara and Judy told me about the job. Of course, I'll accept. I have fallen in love with four of the best looking guys around. Only one thing, you can't call me Pat or Mrs. Johns. Mom will do just fine. Oh, one more thing, Mom would like a big hug to seal this bargain." She was mobbed by four guys, two of them were squealers.

Judy received a call on her cell and she excused herself and left to answer it. She was just on the other side of a large plate glass window and in plain view of everyone in the room. Everyone saw her face become very pale and she had a very shocked look. She even had to sit down. Judy closed the phone to end the conversation and just sat there taking some very deep breaths. She rose and started back into the room. Dennis and Kyle were by her side immediately.

Kyle asked, "Judy, we know that you got some bad news. Would like for me to get you a glass of water or something?"

"Thank you, but I will be ok. You are right, I just receive some very disturbing news and I don't think you'll like it one little bit. Let's go back into the room and I will tell everyone at once."

"Aunt Clara, you lawyer just called and has some bad news. The cousins that you mentioned filled a petition to get custody of the boys and have been granted a court date for tomorrow morning at 9:00 am."

Aunt Clara cried, "Oh, no! I was afraid something like this was going to happen." She couldn't go on. She sat in a chair and buried her face in her hands and started sobbing. Kyle and Dennis rushed to her side and took her in their arms and just held her tight.

Joel and Jeremy started crying. Judy and Pat moved to the boys and took them in their arms. "Does that mean that we can't live with Kyle and Dennis any more? I don't want to leave them. Please Judy, can you do something?" sobbed Joel.

"Listen everyone! Now that the shock is over. Let's have a big group hug and shed some more tears. Then we can plan our next move," explained Judy "We haven't lost yet, and we are not giving up with out a big fight!"

After about a minute, Judy had everyone sit and stood in front of the small group. "Aunt Clara, you lawyer would like to meet with all of us in his office as soon as we can get there. Dennis and Kyle, your lawyer will be there also. They want us to plan our attack for tomorrow's court hearing. We want to present a well planned and unified front. Pat, do you think that you and the boys could find something fun to do. You could take my car and one of my cell phones. Do you know how to find the Penny Arcade out on Division Street. I bet that would fun!"

"I sure do. You can bet we'll find something to do. Can't we boys? Maybe even a walk in the park and feed the ducks."

"Sure thing, Mom. Can we go now?" asked Joel.

"May we go now? Let's do it then!" Mom said.

"We'll, call you when we return to my office," said Judy

Dennis took $50 out of his wallet and handed it to Mom. "Don't forget that the Dairy Queen has the best milkshakes in town. Don't let the boys convince you that they need a large one, a small one will do just fine. Boys, remember you manners and listen to Mom. Love you and see you when you get back. Have fun!"

The boys gave everyone a hug and they were on their way, squealing with delight.

Larry met the group when they walked in to his office.

"Please follow me, Jim is already in there waiting. We really have our work cut out for us now. If we all pool our resources, we shouldn't have a problem."

"I have checked the courts schedule and we have a court date in two weeks. The lawyer for the cousins is from out of town, so I don't know how he was able to get a court date as soon as he did. He must have some really good connections, which could cause problems. He is working with one of the local lawyers here in town who is new and I don't know anything about him. Judge Allison has been assigned to preside over the case. He is fair enough but I prefer Judge Riley. She has been assigned our case." Jim explained.

Larry explained, "I'm going to ask that the judge to throw the case out. I'll try to get it at the same time as the one we have scheduled. By combining the two, we can save the county a ton of money. That of course, will be one thing, I will stress. Clara, I have requested that your case be sent to the probate office and maybe we can have a decision by late afternoon. We need a ruling by a probate Judge stating that you and the boys are the only living legal heirs. We are putting a clause in it saying that Clara will put half of the estate in trust and she will be named trustee. Then we can start the probate process. This will of course, be in our favor and will remove the dollar signs from the cousins eyes. The final settlement may take six months before it is complete."

"I have done the same thing for the boys. They are the only heirs of their father and his parents. Their father was an only child, so any thing from the grandparents would go to Joel and Jeremy. I have asked that Kyle be the executor of the estate and Dennis to be added when he turns 21 in a few months. This is not as urgent as Clara's case. There is no way the cousins can get any of this unless of course they happen to be appointed executors of the estate and under certain conditions they could be given complete control of the money and spend it as they see fit. If this be case, I will file an immediate appeal and this case could be tied up for a long time. I doubt that this will happen but I don't want to take any chances," Jim said.

"Now, Judy, you will be playing a key role. Joel and Jeremy are wards of the state and have been placed in your care until such time as you find permanent foster care, custody is awarded, adoption or you responsibility has been transferred to someone else. It is your responsibility to do background checks, secure references and make recommendations to insure the boy's well-being and safety. I must ask, Have you done any of this for the cousins or any one else involved in the case?" asked Larry. "I will be calling on you for your testimony, if need be."

"Larry, in answer to you questions, no, I have not. I have never met the cousins nor have I had an interview with them, their representatives or any one connected with them," replied Judy. "Of course, I have done all the preliminary work on Kyle and Dennis. I have completed all the paperwork and filed every thing with the Juvenile Courts. It is my intentions to request that permanent custody or adoption be given to them.

"Good, Judy! Bring all you documented paper work that you have turned over to the court, you petitions and anything connected with case. If the judge does not throw the cousins' case out, we can present all the evidence to him and he can make the decision on the adoption. Be prepared!"

"Kyle and Dennis, I want you to be there also. Bring the boys and Pat along. We may have to present our case. If need be, we will," Jim said.

"Clara, you will be there also, right? Bring any documentation that you have showing that you and the boys are the sole heirs. If you have a family Bible, old letters, or any thing else you can find. The bible would be just be just perfect."

"Please excuse the interruption but I know this is something that you need. Larry, the call form Judge Harrison came. He said that he will sign the papers stating that Clara is sole heir. He knows the family well, and would like to have her come with any documentation that she has just to make it legal. He just gave me the message and I told him you would stop by later in the day," Larry's secretary said.

"Thanks, Sue! It looks like we just jumped over one hurdle. I just hope there aren't too many more. I am getting to old to be doing all this hurdle jumping. I know that someday I will trip on the top bar and fall flat on my face or my butt."
