The Cabin by the Lake part II Chapter 4
One morning Dennis, Kyle and boys were sitting around the breakfast table after eating too many hotcakes that Mom had cooked. "Kyle and Dennis, would it be ok if Jeremy and I called you Daddy and Papa? If our adoption goes through, then we can't continue to call you by your first names," questioned Joel.
"Yes!" said both Kyle and Dennis at the same time. They each grabbed a boy and hugged them close to their chest.
"Jeremy and I have not decided which one of you will be Dad and who will be Papa. We have almost decided of Daddy Dennis and Daddy Kyle. I think we are going to flip a coin. There you two go again with those happy tears," said Joel as he reached up and wiped a tear from Dennis' cheek.
"You know boys, I have waited all my life to be called Dad Or Papa. I like them both but we will let you boys decide," said Kyle getting all choked up.
"Now look, you two have made me all bubbly eyed," Mom said wiping tears from her eyes.
"We're glad that Miss Judy found all of you when our family was killed in the auto accident. I wanted to die too. Now I want to live. Love you both," said Joel.
"Me, too," cried Jeremy.
"Boys, we will know soon if the adoption goes through. I pray every day that it does ," said Mom.
"Joel and I have been doing that every day since we came to live with Dennis and Kyle. We heard them saying their prayers also and we were include in them," Jeremy said beaming with pride.
"Joel and Jeremy, there is something that we must tell you. Remember we talked with you about why Dennis and I live together and sleep in the same bed?" There are a lot of people who don't agree with that idea. Some of the churches even talk against gays and lesbians. We told you that two men are said to be gay and two woman are lesbians," explained Kyle.
Kyle continued, "We have heard rumors that some of these people are going protest at the courthouse when we go to the hearing. They will be led by one of the ministers in town and he will probably be shouting that we will be going to hell. The crowd is going to be yelling all kinds of nasty things and will be carrying signs. They will probably scare you to death. Dennis and I will each take one of you and lead you into the courtroom, if we can`t sneak you in the back way. Once inside the protesters can't say anything. If they do, the judge will have them removed from the room."
Dennis said, "Mom, just stick to us like glue. One of our friends, who is gay, is organizing a counter-protest group and will walk in with us. He is going to try to stop them in their tracts. I don't know what he's going to do or say. Our friends and family are going to enter the back door while we are coming in through the front door, which will have policemen on duty to keep the protestors in order and they will not let any physical harm come to any of us. There may be protestors at both doors."
"I know that Dennis and Kyle have scarred you. We just wanted to warn you ahead of time so that all of this wouldn't come as a surprise because then you would be really scared. Just remember there is going to be a lot of people on our side and will protect us. Some people may try to talk with you. Just sing `Whistle a happy tune and I'll help you," Mom said.
"We wanted to let you know ahead of time, so that we could answer any questions that you may have. For the next three days, if you think of something, just ask and we will be completely honest and answer to the best of our ability. I think all of us, you, too, Mom should go to the barn and take care of the animals. I bet they are hungry also. Let's sing as we go!" Dennis said.
There was a lot of tension and every one seemed to be tied in knots, Therefore, a lot of singing took place. Mom was always at the piano playing . The quartet was actually getting to sound pretty good. Mom suggested the quartet choose a hymn and they could practice and sing it in church on Sunday.
They selected `In the Garden'. Mom thought that Dennis with his base voice should sing the verses solo and the other three join him in the chorus. It would take their minds off the up coming court hearing on Monday afternoon.
Mom called Reverend Carl and asked him if it would be ok for them to perform. She got his full attention and blessings with a definite yes. She also called Dennis's Dad and Kyle's parents to make sure that they would be there. Of course, they called friends, who called friends, etc. Should be a nice turn out. Mom didn't tell Dennis because she knew that he would have a heart attack.
At different times on Saturday, they rehearsed "In the Garden". Mom had Kyle sing `Standing on the Promises' several time. "Mom, I know what you are doing, you want me to sing a solo. At least you picked a song that I know and a easy one to sing. Guess what? I will do it."
"Kyle, you have a beautiful tenor voice and I picked a song that will show it off, nicely. Again, you sing the verses and you other three join in on the chorus. Joel and Jeremy, I haven't forgotten you. I have a song for you." She started playing `Do Lord' and the boys immediately started singing. Kyle and Dennis joined the in the chorus.
"That was beautiful guys! I'm so proud of all of you," Mom said. "I think that is enough. Let's stop for awhile and we can run through the songs one more time before we go to bed."
Just before bed, they rehearsed the songs once again. "You guys sound just like a pro quartet. I know you will make me proud. I can just hear the congregation and Reverend Carl, now. I can almost predict that you will have permanent jobs, Just don't give up your day jobs yet," said Mom.
"Mom, you had better not give up your day job. You are too, valuable here at lake. Rev. Carl told me the other day that he was looking for a new organist. The last one moved to Montana," Kyle mentioned.
"I hope he does. I would love to play organ in church again. I did years ago and loved it. That is one thing I can do without leaving. I love it here and I love all of you even more."
"Mom, you are the best ever and we don't want you to ever leave," said Jeremy.
"Jeremy, I have no intentions of leaving. You are just stuck with me forever."
"Yea!" shouted Joel, Kyle, and Dennis.
Everyone piled into the SUV and they headed to church. Rev. Carl was standing on the front porch greeting people" Mom, I guess you know you thrilled me to no end when you called and said the guys were going to sing.
"Reverend, there has been a change. The boys are going to sing three songs and there will be solo parts in each song. I will accompany them on the organ. I hope this doesn't upset your plans," said Mom.
"Not a problem. I will just run overtime. Just kidding, if need be I will cut the sermon short. Shall we go inside. I have reserved the front pew for you."
"I guess that is one way of filling the front Pew,' chuckle Dennis. Dennis stopped short and looked around the room. He could not believe his eyes. Every pew was filled and he spotted his dad, Kyle's parents, and lots of friends.
"Mom, I bet you had something to do with all this," moaned Dennis.
"Me! Now would I do something like that?"
"Yes!' replied Dennis.
The Reverend Carl took his place at the podium and after the opening prayer he said "We are going to change the procedure around a little today. Mrs. Jones and her crew are going open the services with three songs. I haven't heard them yet but I have a feeling we are in for a treat. So Mrs. Jones, when you are ready.
Mom took her place at the organ and the quartet took their place beside the organ. She played the opening prelude and Dennis started singing in his beautiful base voice and the other guys joined him in the chorus. The audience was singing along with them very softly.
"Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! Dennis you brought tears to my eyes but I was not the only one. Ladies and Gentlemen this was only the warm up there is more to come."
Again Mom played the prelude and this time Kyle did the solo on the verses and the other three did the back-up. Kyle voice seemed to vibrate of the walls and again the people sang along softly.
"What a treat! Have you noticed Kyle and Dennis each sang a solo part. I would almost bet that Joel and Jeremy will be next. I can't wait. So take it away boys!" said Rev. Carl. It became very quite, and the audience waited with anticipation.
Unknown to anyone Joel and Jeremy decided to each sing a solo part and would alternated on the verses. Jeremy started singing, Mom gave them a puzzled look but kept on playing. Everyone in the audience stood and sang softly again and clapped in time to the music. This wound the boys up and they really put on a show. At the end the audience started clapping and asking for more. Mom just start playing again and the two boys did their part.
"I don't know how I could follow this performance. So I don't think I will even try. I think that the worship service today will be in the form of songs. That is if I can persuade the group to lead you." stated Rev. Carl.
"May Jeremy and I sit down and just let Kyle and Dennis lead the singing. I am afraid that we wouldn't know all the songs," asked Joel. The Reverend replied, "You certainly may, I see a man and woman, that must be your grandparents, moving apart making room for you sit. Thanks boys, you did great." Again the audience clapped. "For the rest of the time we will take requests, so take out your hymnals and tell us what page. I must warn you if the Kyle and Dennis don't know the song, then you get to be the song leader," chuckle Rev. Carl
A little gray haired lady stood up. "I would like request page 74. This is my favorite song."
"Guess what? The very first song and we don't know it. Just kidding, that is one of my favorite songs also. Would you like to come up and help us?" asked Mom.
"I would be delighted too," said the woman who was on her way to the front. She may be petite but she has mighty fine soprano voice and enough volume that everyone in the building could hear it.
So it went for the rest of the service. Most everyone who requested a song came to the from to help lead. Finally, Rev. Carl said the closing prayer. "I have two announcements. Tomorrow afternoon, Dennis and Kyle have their hearing on the adoption of Joel and Jeremy. There is going to be a anti-gay rally at the courthouse. We would like to have everyone join us in a pro-rally and signs would be most welcome. I am sure the TV cameras will be on. There will be refreshments in the hall. I understand Joel and Jeremy made all the cookies. Relax, they were under the supervision of Loretta. You have sampled her cooking before so you know it will be good. Thanks Loretta and boys. Thanks guys for the superb job of singing today. Mom how would to like to become the Church organist. Mrs. Polk's husband was transferred out town, so now we are without one."
"I would love to. Everyone knows that I have nothing to do but baby sit four boys," Mom and the entire congregation laughed.
"All I have left to say is Head for the cookies!" said Rev. Carl.TBC
