The Cabin by the Lake part II Chapter 8
That evening after everyone had gone to bed, Dennis and Kyle were sitting in the kitchen having a late snack and just talking. "Dennis, you dropped a big bomb shell at the Richardson Ranch today. Are you serious or were you just talking?"
"Kyle. I was more less just thinking out loud. I wanted to discuss this with you. I have talked with Mr. Richardson on the phone and he is going to give us first choice before he puts the ranch on the market. Since we have two sons now, we have to look out for their welfare. They will both be in school. Have you given it any thought as to what we are going to do?"
"No, I haven't. In fact this hasn't even crossed my mind. I would like to hear what you are thinking," replied Kyle.
"We live a long ways from Bend. It would be a long day for both of the boys, if they had to travel to and from school each day. Of course this could be done only in the Fall and in the Spring. What would we do in the Winter months when the road is closed by snow? When they get older, would they be able to participate in after school activities if they so desired to do so?"
"You know you have made some very good points for us to consider. Have you given it any thoughts as to possible solutions.”
"I have tried but I haven't thought about anything that turns me on. We could board them out but then we wouldn't see them except on the week-end. We could buy a place in Bend and move Mom and the boys into it. Both ideas really turned me off. I want to raise the boys and not leave most of it up to a stranger or Mom. Then I though about home schooling and using the internet. The boys would miss out on socializations with peers their own age. I think they need to be around children their own age and learn how to be sociable The families that have children out here are gone when school starts. We could move into Bend and we could do the traveling. Then again we would be gone a lot of the time. Sometimes we could be gone up to two weeks at a time. So you see, I don't have a workable solution," said Dennis.
"Holy cow! I think we do have a problem. I would like to hear your thinking about buying the Richardson Ranch."
"The Richardson Ranch certainly has positive possibilities. There is enough acreage to raise our stock feed and therefore we would save a bundle by not buying winter feed. We could diversify and raise horses for sale. The Richardson property has a large boundary with Bureau of Land Management, we could run a small scale operation like the one we have here. If we wanted we could operate a dude ranch in conjunction with the pack operation. There would be lots of opportunities for unlimited outdoor recreation.,. We should be able to sell out and buy the Richardson Ranch and still make a profit. " replied Dennis.
"I must say you have given this a little more than a small interest. I think you have done a lot of research on line. Now you have aroused my interest and I can see that we have some planning to do. How about including your Dad and Terry in our planning?"
"Kyle, at the moment I would like this to be our thing. Maybe we could involve them later on and have them help put the finishing touching of the project, if we decide to go through with this. I think we need to put our heads together and look for other solutions. I know that we can come up with something that is workable."
"I agree. This is something that doesn't have to be finalized right away. I know the economy is not very favorable but I know there is money out there just waiting to be found. Now I am really getting excited and look forward to this new adventure. Where do we start?" asked Kyle. "I know something that has to be taken care of right away and it can't wait. In other words get your ass in Bed."
"That can wait. I think that we just started. We have started talking and dreaming. That was the easy part, now the hard part looms ahead of us. We just have to remember to start small and to develop our plans as we go ahead with our project. At least the kids would be only 7 miles from school. To hear our grandparents tell it, they had to walk that far in belly deep snow. The boys would be on the bus for about a half hour before and after school, " explained Dennis. "Kyle, we had better not wait to long to make up our minds. I would like to buy Mr. Richardson's breeding stock from him before he decides to have a large horse sale."
" I agree 100%. Dennis. Will you hurry up and get into bed. We have a lot of things to accomplish in the morning to get ready for the pack trip the next day. I can just see the boys and Mom riding down the trial on their very own animals. At least the boys have something small enough for them to handle. Mom can relax now and enjoy the trip. Every thing is going our way."
"Kyle, you had better be good or I will pretend that I am a teacher and make you do it over and over until you get it right!"
"Dennis, you're just a lot of talk and no action. I will pretend I am the teacher and keep your after school for being nasty, I mean naughty. Maybe I should say, nasty and naughty!" ***** It was hurry and scurry the next day getting ready for the pack trip. Kyle and Dennis had received only two days notice and had no time to do a lot of the preliminary prep work. They had done this type of thing before and somehow always managed to pull it off with out any serious problems. This time was no exception. By mid-afternoon, they had the packs all loaded and ready to go.
Joel and Jeremy were about to drive everyone up the wall with all their nervous excitement. Loretta called and had the boys come down so they could make cookies for the four day trip the next day. They were getting so they could almost do the cookies by themselves. Mom went down and thought that she and Loretta could catch up on the local gossip.
The clients showed up early afternoon, five adults and three children. The children were about the same age as Joel and Jeremy. Now the boys had something to do except get in everyone's hair.
While the group was checking in one man about 30 stood out from the rest. Kyle was going over the rules that everyone was expected to follow. This man kept interrupting and was very loud and boisterous to the point of being annoying and quarrelsome. Kyle knew this type and just ignored him the best that he could. Kyle knew this could turn into a long and wearing trip.
The next morning the horses were saddled and the packs loaded. Joel and Jeremy came ridding up to the group. Dennis, who was standing next to Mr. Loudmouth, was getting an ear full. "Look, here comes two jackasses riding jackasses and they are being lead by Mama Jackass," the man shouted.
"Mister, I would suggest that you closes your mouth and keep it shut for the rest of this trip. Those jackasses happen to be my two sons and Mom," Dennis said angrily. "I said shut-up! If you can't close your mouth on your own, then I will close it for you!"
"Yah, you and what army? You're just a big yellow chicken, Cluck! Cluck!" shouted the man as he gave Dennis a big shove. "Cluck! Cluck!" and made a lunge at Dennis.
Dennis just sidestepped and hit him hard with a closed fist right in the eye and another in his mouth. The guy fell to the ground and screaming with pain. Get up! You worthless piece of dog poop. This trip has just been canceled. Who is the leader of this group?"
"I am," said an older man.
"I am very sorry but this trip has been canceled. You can stop by the office after you get your things and get a full refund except for him," said Dennis, pointing to the man on the ground.
"Is there any possibility that you would consider. That crying baby is my nephew. I didn't want to bring him but my sister wouldn't take no for a answer and insisted that I bring him. I agreed but only on one condition, any sign of trouble, he would be returned. So as far as I am concerned he is out."
"That is a different story. I can see no reason to punish all of you for something that this ugly guy did. I'll allow the trip to continue." said Dennis.
"Are you sure you won't get in trouble with your boss?"
"Sir, You see that good looking stud over with that silly grin on his face."
"Yes."
"He and I are owners of this operation. I will not allow Mr. Loudmouth to remain at our place. I will have our foreman to take him into Bend and dump him. That is if you agree," said Dennis.
"Where is the nearest airport from here? I will just put him on a plane and ship him back to his mother. She is just going to hit the ceiling and I know that he will wish to be back here for you to pound on him. That will be better than the tongue lashing he'll get from her."
"Please, Uncle Joe, I have learned my lesson. I promise to do better. If not, then you can turn Dennis loose on me again and then send me home."
"What is your name? I can't keep calling you, Mr. Loudmouth," asked Dennis.
"It is Jerry."
"Jerry, I have to consult with your Uncle and my partner and see what they think. Have a seat over there on the porch and we will have a little conference," Dennis suggested.
Dennis walked over to the group and they all gathered around. "I told Jerry that I would discuss the possibility of him staying and finishing the pack trip. I am going to leave it up to all of you to decide. If you say yes, then I will talk with him and lay some rules down and he will have to following them exactly. If not, then home he goes and I hope that I won't have get physical again because if I do he will have more that a black eye and fat lip. So what do you think?"
"Dennis, I am glad you put Jerry in his place. I have wanted to do that for years but never did. I don't know how long this will last but I'm willing to give it a try. If need be, I get the first punch," laughed Sherry Lambert, Jerry's aunt.
"I'm very skeptical about giving him another chance. He has made promises before and has never followed through. However, if the rest agrees then I'm willing to take another chance but I get first punch, Sherry," laughed Joe.
"I say let him go. If he calls Mom, Jeremy or me a Jackass again, then the three of us will get the first punch." said Joel. The group roared with laughter.
"I keep hearing `yes' let him go. Is their any one who wants to say no? Remember you vote counts, also," asked Dennis. No one said anything. "Then, I will go over and talk with Jerry. I think this is going to work out. I like to think there is some good in everyone regardless how rotten they may seem to be," reacted Dennis.
As he was walking away, he heard Kyle say, "Can you believe that guy. He has the most positive attitude that I have ever seen. To him there is good in everyone. Rarely does he get carried away. Today was one of the rare occasions and he really surprised me when he got physical. He is usually as mellow as a little kitten. He loves the whole world and it loves him back. He is all heart."
Dennis had a long talk with Jerry and then they came back to the group. It was plain to see that Jerry had been crying. "Hey, everyone mount up. I want everyone to know that I am not mad a Jerry. Everyone gets one mess up but only once. Right Jerry?"
"Dennis, I want every one to hear what I have to say. I want to apologize to Dennis and thank him for waking me up and telling me to get my head out of the sand and smell the roses. Sorry! I'll make you proud that I received a second chance." said Jerry with tears in his eyes.
"Apology accepted. Now let's go and have some fun!" exclaimed Dennis.
So the week started and soon everyone had a riding partner. Kyle and Uncle Joe formed one pair and took the lead.. The kids came behind them. Mom and Sherry Lambert became a team and behind the kids, them came Sherry and Joe's two sons, fathers to the kids. Dennis and Jerry paired up and brought up the rear. On the trail it sounded like a bunch of magpies (a black and white scavenger bird) squawking over a road kill.
