The Cabin by the Lake part II
Chapter 10
For two days, Jerry didn't sleep or eat. He became a bundle of nerves and was quickly becoming a walking zombie. "Hey, guy are you with me?" asked Kyle. "You are all spaced out. If you don't get a good grip on yourself, the rest of your life is going to be very short. I heard Dennis ask if you had a safe place. Close your eyes and keep them closed. Go there now. Are you there yet? (Shake of the head yes) Good. Do you have a close friend that you could bring to your secret place. (Shake of the head yes) Good. Now don't open you eyes and I want you to talk to your friend. Pour out you inner feeling and don't stop until you want to go on living. Do you hear me? (shake of the head yes) I am going to get out of ear shot, so you won't have to worry about me hearing what you tell your friend. Count to 25 out loud and I will be gone. Remember to keep your eyes closed."
Kyle was close enough to watch Jerry but couldn't hear what he was saying. Finally, Jerry opened his eyes and collapsed to the ground and started crying. Kyle rushed to him and took him in his arms. "Hey, are you alright?" "I am. I think the whole world has been lifted off my shoulders. I want to know one thing. How did you and Dennis learn all the things that you are doing for me?"
"Jerry, like you, I had to learn the hard way. I was in a very abusive relationship and had a very nasty breakup. My boyfriend even tried to kill me. I met Dennis who smothered me with love. Then he put me in counseling. I would go in first to see my counselor. Then he would meet with the counselor afterward and learn how to deal with me. He learned fast and we are using the same techniques with you. They work don't they?"
"You bet."
"Jerry, we have two days left. All your troubles are behind. The rest of your life is ahead of. It is up to you to decide how you are going to live it. I want you to enjoy the rest of this trip. If it gets too tough, take your friend and go to your safe place. Let's go back to camp. I bet everyone thinks we took off and left them."
Dennis and Kyle held a group session and every one came away relaxed and ready to enjoy the rest of the trip which turned out to be a superior experience. ***** "Jerry and Uncle Joe, relax Loretta won't become a ax murderer. She is the most loving and caring person on this whole earth. If anything she will smother you with love until you can't breathe. Here she comes now."
Jerry didn't wait to be introduce but he ran to her and threw his arms around her and started crying. Loretta just stood there holding him and running her hand over his head. She too was crying.
"Loretta, we are going back to the house. Jerry can stay here and get acquainted. Jerry, stay as long as you like. Just give us a jingle when you want us to come back. Uncle Joe why don't you come with us and you can have your turn later."
So the introduction into the lost family was started. Tomorrow could the worst day or the best day of Jerry's life. What would his dad be like? Crazy thoughts filled his mind so Jerry did not sleep the whole night.
Loretta had paved the way for the meeting. Still an air of tension filled the house. Every one gathered at the Bread and Breakfast and were eating breakfast when a car pulled into the driveway.
"Is that my dad?"
"Yes"
Jerry let out a loud shriek and took off on a dead run, His dad shut off the engine and jumped out of the car. They grabbed each other and stood there hugging each other with tears rolling down their faces.
Loretta started toward the door. Dennis stopped her. "No, wait let them have a little time. They have both waited 29 years for this moment. They will let us know when we can go out."
Ten minutes passed and Jerry and his dad turned and started for the house arm in arm. This was the signal that those inside the house had been waiting for and they all rushed outside and had a big group hug.
"Hey, does anyone one have a cell phone with them? I want to call my mother!" Jerry cried.
"Won't be necessary she will arrive in Redmond at 2 this afternoon." Uncle Joe announced. "I called and got plane reservations and she is on the flight and it is on schedule. I didn't tell her why I wanted her to come. I told her that I had something very important to discuss and it couldn't wait. I left her with the impression that it concerned Jerry. If we leave now we should be there to meet the plane." This started the tears flowing again. Jerry collapsed and started to fall but his dad caught him and just held him. Jerry finally regained his composure and started talking with his dad.
"Jerry, I must ask how did you get that black eye and fat lip?" asked Lonnie, Jerry's dad.
"Dad, I'll tell you about it later. This beautiful guy right here is responsible. I was acting like a complete asshole and he kicked my butt but good. I love him for what he did. I am on my way to becoming a new man because of him," replied Jerry.
"Kyle is coming with the small bus to take us to Redmond. So climb on board and we can get this show underway. Hey, kids, all of you mind Mom and we will bring back a whole bunch of pizzas and you can eat all you want."
"Yea!" shouted all five kids.
All the way to Redmond, Lonnie and Jerry sat with an arm around the other shoulders. Loretta told how she had kept in contact with Jerry's grandmother. Loretta would call her about twice a year. Lonnie told Jerry about the way that he and his grandmother had to sneak around with their correspondence.
"Dad, I hated you and even wanted to kill you. My mother always said that you ran away and left us. She just didn't know the truth about her father. My Uncle Joe found a box in the basement that contained all the letters that you wrote my grandmother. She kept a diary and on the last page she listed Loretta's name and last known address. Uncle Joe took it from there and here we are."
"Jerry, did your mother ever remarry?"
"No, she didn't. I don't think she even dated. If she did I didn't know about it. Uncle Joe, do you know? "No, she didn't date. She loved only you and thought that you didn't care and just took off. I don't even think she told you she was pregnant," Uncle Joe said.
"Doesn't matter. What counts is now. Jerry, I love your mother very much. There is nothing that I would do that would put her in jeopardy. You grandmother arranged for me to disappear and kept me supplied with money. I love your mother and always wished that we could get back together. I never married again. I hated your grandfather as much as you hated me. I will never forgive him. Thank God that Uncle Joe found that box," Lonnie said with tears in his eyes.
"We will be at the airport in about five minutes. We will be a few minutes early, so I would say hit the restrooms and wash you faces," said Kyle. "I know I need to wash the tear stains off mine."
Everyone was sitting where they all had a view of the landing strip and since this was a very small airport they could see the unloading area very well. Jerry and Lonnie just sat holding each other's hand and shaking all over. Neither was saying anything.
"Dad, she is coming down the steps! Come on let's go." They both jumped up, holding hands they ran to meet Jerry's mother. The security guard just stepped aside and let them go.
"Mom! Over here!" She looked over and saw Jerry and his dad. She immediately recognized the man that she loved all these years. She fainted and the two women next to her grabbed her and prevented her from hitting the ground.
The security guard ran out with smelling salts and held it under her nose. Mom opened her eyes and went out again and got another whiff of the horrible smelling stuff. This time she made it.
"Mom!" shouted Jerry and that was all he could say. He and his father was hugging and kissing his mom. They were on each side of her and half carried her inside and into the lobby. They sat her in and chair and sat on each side of her with their arms around her.
"I have waited for this moment for 29 years and now my waiting has paid off. Lonnie, I hated you all this time. Why did you decide to come back? Even with all the hate, I still love you!" said Lois.
"I have never stopped loving you. Joe and I have a big story to tell you and in time we will do so. It is great to be a family again," Lonnie said and broke down and started crying. All those in the lobby were also shedding tears.
"Jerry, I am never going home again. I am going to stay right here. You can have the house," said Lois.
"Mom, Let put it on the market and sell it. I am not going back either," replied Jerry.
"Jerry, your Uncle and I decided to sell the business. We already have a buyer and have signed the final papers. We want to split it five ways. .We want to give you and your cousins equal shares. I don't know how much each share will be but none of us will ever have to work again. It will be like winning one of the super, super large lottery," explained Lois. "So how do you boys feel about this?"
"Mom that money belongs to you and Uncle Joe. You have earned every cent with all you had to go through. You can do whatever you want," said Jerry.
"We feel the same way, " agree Uncle Joe's two sons."
"Then we will have a five way split," said Uncle Joe.
"Lois, I have a large ranch that was paid for by your mother. I would like to invite you and Jerry to come and live with me," Lonnie said.
"I will accept under one condition. That is if we get married. I never did stop loving you, Lonnie," said Lois through her tears.
"I would like to do it tomorrow but we have a 3 day waiting period in the State of Oregon. So we will have to wait at least that long. I have dreamed of this forever. Dreams do come true," said Lonnie grinning and turned Lois toward him and kissed her.
"Mom and Dad, you're going to have some big adjustments to make. I really appreciate your offer, Dad. However, I have to refuse. You need some time alone. I want to get a manual job, digging ditches with a shovel if need be. I have never had to do anything on my own and I was a spoiled rotten brat. I need some space and time to grow up. I have lots to work through and even more to throw away. I promise not to leave the area and we will get together when ever possible. Now that we have found you, I'll never let you go. Love you both."
"Jerry, I respect what you are saying and I agree with you. Love you, son."
"Oh, you two you have made me cry again. No, you can't make me cry, I choose to cry on my own. Love you both very, very much," said Lois kissing both her guys. "I know that I will be thanking God for all his love and care. I know that he kept giving us strength to keep going."
"Lois, I don't think you will be the only one. I know I will be!" said Uncle Joe. Every head in the group was shaking the heads yes.
"I think we should head home. We have only one stop to make and that is to get some pizzas from Papa Murphy's. If we don't we will have some unhappy campers when we get home. Dennis, do we have all the makings for some milk shakes." asked Kyle.
"Sure thing. That is if all the adults take wee small ones. Just kidding," replied Dennis.
"Loretta, how are you doing for sleeping rooms? Do you have enough beds or do we need to put Dennis in one yurt with all the kidsm" asked Kyle.
"I don't think I can come up with enough beds. So we had better put him in with the kids, after we tell the kids ghost stories," laughed Loretta.
"I have a better idea, How about we use the big yurt that sleeps 15 and Kyle and I can both sleep in there with the kids. Jerry , if you would like there would be room for you. No ghost stories, however," said Dennis. "We were able to section the yurt into 4 sections. We can put the kids all in one section. Just be sure to wear something to bed because if you don't you may have an unexpected visitors during the night and you can bet they will tell the next morning. With us staying in the yurt the big house will have lots of room."
Kyle said, "Fine with me."
"Count me in," said Jerry.
"I called ahead and ordered the pizzas and they should be ready by the time we get there," said Uncle Joe.
When they pulled into the driveway, 5 kids came running out the door shrieking, "Did you remember to get our pizza?"
"No, we forgot all about it," said Uncle Joe
"Then you can just go back and get some. Ask Mom, we have been extra good," exclaimed Jeremy.
"He's right! I couldn't ask for better kids and besides I want some pizza myself," snickered Mom.
"We got 7 different kinds-giant sizes. So there should be something for everyone's individual likes and have leftovers for breakfast," said Uncle Joe.
After the kids finally dropped off to sleep, Kyle, Dennis, and Jerry were just sitting around talking. "Jerry, you have had one emotional day. You must be completely exhausted. Do you want us to go to bed and let you get some sleep?" asked Dennis.
"No, I don't. Just sitting here talking is very relaxing for me." answered Jerry.
Kyle inquired "Jerry, you have gone from hating you dad and to a completely new feeling. I know it is going to take sometime to completely heal and for you to completely handle this new hurdle. Is there anything that Dennis and I can do to speed this process along?"
"Kyle, I would like to rent one of the smaller yurts and stay out here for awhile. I have a lot of excess baggage to throw away before I can really accept my dad. I want you two to continue showing me the way. I have a lot to learn about love and how to handle it. This is a brand new experience for me. Whatever you do, don't let me backslide and become the old person I was. I didn't like that person one little bit."
"That will be easy to do. If you start acting goofy, I'll just let Dennis kick your ass and point you in the right direction." Kyle joked. "Jerry, you said earlier that you wanted to get a job that involved some manual labor. I think we just may have the job for you. We had an college kid working this summer and he decided to go back to school. He got a job in his college town and moved. He did grounds maintenance, cleaning stalls, feeding livestock running errands, and helping Loretta at the Bread and Breakfast. At times, he had to help on camping trips. Does this position appeal at all to you?"
"You bet it does. Where are the application papers to fill out?" inquired Jerry.
"Actually, you went on the payroll about 5 minutes ago. There is a one bed room cottage that goes with the job. It is complete with a kitchen and is completely furnished. Welcome aboard, manure shoveler," Laughed Dennis.
"I don't care! It just feels good to finally be on my own. I will be here with you guys and near my `family'. I don't care how much shoveling I'll have to do. Anything will beat my old life," Jerry said becoming emotional.
"Go ahead and let it all out. You have to grieve before you can heal and you still have a long way to go," said Kyle. "I know, I have been there and done that."
