High School in NYC isn't for the faint of heart. It requires teeth and claws like non other; or at least as far as Im concerned. My names Eric, this story starts when im fourteen.
The first day of high school has already proved to be terrible. All my teachers seemed just adequate at the least and the walls of homophobia were closing terribly fast on me. Maybe it was just selective listening but all I could hear from every hallway, every stairway was "he's gay" "fag" and gay insult after insult.
For the next few days I floated to class to class like a bee pollinating a flower. Days turned to weeks which then turned to months. Winter arrived and I began to grow as glum as an abandoned puppy. During lunch time I would go outside to sit by myself behind the handball courts. It was nice being alone in a school with nearly ten thousand people, and it was even nicer no one cared what I did. I could stay out all day if I had wished, no one really cares. However my lovely lunch time retreat soon came to a close as it had grown to cold. I was forced to stay in the cafeteria.
The cafeteria is a grizzly sight. Food is congealed in every crack of the floor, and milk forms rivers every few feet. For some reason the prospect of standing bothered the lunch room staff terribly so I found my seat at the furthest away; albeit dirty table. Weeks went by with no one coming over to greet me. Part of me was thankful, part of me wished that someone, anyone would come by just to say hello. And it would appear my wish was granted. He was a good five inches shorter then my generous height of six foot, much more slender and had a large mop of jet black hair with almond shaped eyes to match. His skin a warm olive. He dressed rather peculiar, often wearing a corona beer cap, with Hawaiian theme button down shirts with a T shirt under them much too large for his small frame and jeans and khakis as well too large for him. However messy he looked I was instantly attracted to him. Why I honestly don't know, before this my "type" was always those drop dead good looking Aryans you see. I had seen him around my classes, though never did I talk to him, and never until now did I realize how cute he really was. All of a sudden he plopped down across from me and just kept looking at me square in the eyes. I instantly wrote him off as an idiot or a drug head, and gave him the cold shoulder. Although, I couldn't shake him however hard I tried.
"Can I help you?" I said
He grinned, "yeah id like a big mac with fries. No onions"
I couldn't help but chuckle, although I was used to people giving me funny answers to my rather peculiar greetings. I always felt this inherence to be polite with a glaze of snotty added to it. I guess social skills cant be too great when your dad doesn't let you out of your house.
"Sure, right after you leave; I'll get it for you" He looked at me sourly, but quickly seemed to enjoy this little game of minutia.
"It's Lennon."
"What?"
"My name. Its Lennon"
His name shocked me, I figured that name was exclusive for rock stars of the sixties. "What made you think I wanted to know your name?"
"Cause you keep staring at me"
"Im not staring at you, your staring at me." With that said I picked up my bag and escaped up the stairs to wait in front of my next class. All of a sudden, Lennon was directly behind me. He held up a card smiling.
"Elevator pass. I got asthma"
"That's unfortunate Why don't you go to your next class?." I said without looking at him.
"Well I am. Im right in front of it." He said with a cattish grin. Gosh I couldn't stop staring at his eyes, his face. That's exactly what he reminded me of. Some beautiful cat who keeps following you home that you don't have the heart to kick away. Although I was falling for him I couldn't let him win this easy.
"How fortunate for me..." I said in a mocking tone. Although I think we both knew that school suddenly was about to get pretty damn great.
