Chapter 2

Jamie awoke with the sun peeking through a small, uncovered part of his window and beaming into his eyes. He slowly rolled out of bed and walked into the living room. His mother was not on the couch where she'd passed out. When he'd walked by her bed room door, it was open and the room was empty. He went back to his room and collapsed onto his bed, yanking his cell phone off of the charger. He had 4 text messages. Two from Ciely saying she'd left her home on the way to her Aunt's in South Carolina, one from Kamron asking where he was evacuating to, and one from his mother saying she was at her friend Susan's helping her out. Jamie just threw the phone down and shut his eyes. Within what felt like moments he was being awakened by his mother. "Jamie, get up." she said firmly.

"What?" he asked coldly.

"I have to go help get the office prepared and you need to get some stuff packed and leave as soon as you can. Jenna said you could drive up to her parent's house in Meridian and stay there with her."

"Ok." he said with a blank stare. She walked out quickly and he waited to hear her car crank before he rolled over and passed back out onto his bed. Another startling sound awakened him and he looked at his phone as it was vibrating by his head. He answered.

"Jamie where are you?" asked the panic striken voice of his mother.

"What? I'm at the house." he said.

"OH MY GOD! Jamie! What the hell?" she shrieked.

"What?" he asked, very startled.

"Jamie, Jenna called and said you weren't at her parents house so I had to call you. What the hell are you thinking?"

"I've only been asleep a few minutes." Jamie retorted then looked out the window to see that a dull, grey darkness had fallen over the beach outside.

"Jamie, it's 5 in the afternoon! I'm almost at Jenna's house in Mississippi!" she shrieked more violently.

"Well, i can just leave now." Jamie started dashing around the room in a haze of sleepyness, gathering things up.

"No point, now. Fuck, Jamie! They closed the bay bridge an hour ago! You can't leave. By the time you even get on the interstate, it will have started raining, then you'll still have to drive the whole trip just as it makes landfall. No. You have got to get to the shelter, NOW!" he froze at his mother's words. How in the hell had he been so irresponsible? He couldn't figure it out. And he sure couldn't figure out what made him sleep all day. "Now, Jamie!" she snapped again.

"Ok. Bye." he closed the phone and threw it as he started hopping around, trying to put on clothes. He picked up his phone, lap top, and duffle bag and ran out to his Explorer, which hadn't even unlocked in 2 weeks. He cranked it and raced down the single road the went along the barrier island he lived on. A police officer was standing at the bridge and held out his hand to call him to as stop. Jamie rolled down his window to talk to the peaved officer.

"Son, what do you think you're doing?"

"Sorry, sir. I am late and I'm so sorry." Jamie pleaded his case.

"Young man, we called for everyone to be off of the barriers about and hour ago. What are you still doing here?" the cops face was very angry.

"Sorry. Really. I'd fallen asleep and just...thought i'd only been asleep a few minutes..."

"Well, that was not a smart choice at all. Now, you be careful. People are still driving south on 98 so you need to keep it at a slow pace. Where are you headed?"

"Shelter, sir."

"Good. They just opened one at the school. Get there, now. The storm is expected to start coming in around 2 a.m. but the rain and some wind should start any minute now. Don't get caught in it like these other idiots."

"Yes sir." he rolled up his window and went over the bridge where the normal toll booths were empty and their blockades raised. He got onto the Highway where cars were speeding by and cramming up next to one another. He crossed over quickly and got onto the eastbound lanes and headed toward the school. As he got closer the rain started hammering down and he could see the palm and pine trees that lined the highway flapping in the wind. He remembered this feeling oh too well. He pulled in the school parking lott and parked in his usual spot, which he was shocked was not taken. There were car parked everywhere. Embankments, ditches, roadside. It was eerie. He grabbed his things and made his way to the shelter. Once inside he was directed by an aid worker who asked about his supplies, which were in the back of his Explorer, and then showed him to a cot. He put his things down and looked around to see if he knew anyone. Noone. He picked up his phone and sent a text to Ciely telling her what had happened then turned it off.

The shelter was full of strangers. Jamie walked through the masses trying to find a face he recognized but he saw none of his peers. He ended up talking to one lady who was sitting, agonizingly staring into a television that was set up for weather-watching. The local station was on with constant weather reports. The hurricane drew ominously closer and was already drenching most town on and around the panhandle. Power was out in Tampa and Santa Rosa Beach.

After hours of staring intensely at the television with several others, and listening to the wind steadily pick up the anchor was back, reporting that the hurricane was 25 minutes from landfall. A panic shot through the people listening in and aid workers ran around, yelling about the generator and hustling reporters in from outside. As drenched people walked in from outside and doors were locked, everyone fell into a dead silence. All that could be heard was the tv meteorologist telling that the winds were still around 140 and the wind outside as things could be heard blowing into other things hard. Suddenly, Jamie was startled as a hand gripped his shoulder. He jumped violently and turned to see the boy, Brecken, from the beach.

"Oh damn. Hi." Jamie said, breathing hard.

"Hey. I thought it was you. Sorry." Brecken said with a serious look.

"What are you doing here?" Jamie asked.

"My family is rather not up to speed with these types of things so they thought we'd just go to a shelter. What are YOU doing here?"

"It's a long story" Jamie blushed.

"Well I'm glad. I don't know anyone here...i was hoping it was you because I at least knew who you were, kinda....somewhat." Brecken laughed.

"It's wierd because all of my friends left so I don't really know anyone either."

"So hi again." he smiled at Jamie.

"Hey." Jamie laughed. "Great circumstances to see you again."

"Oh yeah. So this is crazy."

"You're not kidding." Jamie said. The two ended up going over to Jamie's cot and sat talking and listening to the wind. Soon the lights turned off and the loud motors of the generators began buzzing. The lights came back soon and Jamie saw Brecken gripping the cot he was sitting on so tightly that his knuckles were white. Jamie started their conversation again and got him to calm down as much as possible. It seemed like hours had passed and Brecken and Jamie laughed at reporters who were fighting with workers to get to go out into the storm. The lady Jamie had been talking to earlier suddenly approached them.

"What are you boys doing?" she asked, nicely. She looked to be in her late 30s. She had a very typical housewife look, which kind of shocked Jamie since she was there alone.

"Nothing. Just talking. Gotta do something other than watch tv the whole time." Jamie smiled at her.

"Amen, brother." she said. "Mind if I join you two?" she asked. Jamie felt bad for her. He remembered how lonely it had been over with the crowd who all seem to have some family member(s) to grab onto or hug up to.

"Sure! I'm Jamie, by the way. And this is Brecken..." Brecken smiled curtly at her and moved over to make room for her next to him on the cot.

"Well, thanks kids. I'm Myra." she sat down and looked at the two of them as if she'd found her long lost best friends. "So where do you two kids live around here?" she asked.

"I live in the new apartment complex on highway 98, across the street from the Barrier island bridges." Brecken offered to her.

"I live on the barrier island, here." Jamie, as well, offered. She looked at him concerned.

"Was your home sea or sound-side?" she asked, quite seriously.

"Sea side."

"Oh my. They said it made landfall on the barriers and all the sea-side homes were probably the most damaged." she said, gravely. Brecken looked at Jamie with concern.

"Was that your house? Where I bumped into you?" he asked

"Yeah..." Jamie was feeling uneasy again.

"Man. It looked pretty rough, too. Still damaged from the last one?"

"Bad. Major structural damage. It barely made it last time. I doubt it fared so well this time." Jamie was definitely feeling sick to his stumoch now. He may have lost his safe haven. His one place that had hidden him from the cruel world for so long. "wow." he whispered.

"It'll be ok, sweety." Myra offered. She leaned up and gave Jamie a reassuring, motherly hug. Jamie felt oddly close to these two strangers at the moment.

"Where is your house, Myra?" Brecken asked as she looked again at Jamie's pained face.

"Just next to the school here. I have some pretty massive trees in my yard so I thought I should hop out of my house for the night. Shame. It was so peaceful and pretty all day outside." she said sadly.

"Yeah. I was on the beach earlier. I had to force some tourists off." Jamie spoke up.

"I don't doubt it. Some fools we've got that come here." she barked and rolled her eyes. Jamie laughed at how similar the two of them were. "So..." she looked at them with an impish grin. "You two...an item, are we?" she asked innocently. The boys looked at one another, completely dumbfounded.

"What?" Brecken laughed uneasily. "No no. We've only met once. This is our second time to meet."

"Oh. I'm so sorry, boys. So sorry." she said. Jamie was laughing in his head but also very quizzical as to why she'd asked. She obviously read his mind because she answered, "You two just looked so comfy over here together. Seemed quite sweet how you were comforting one another. Just got the wrong signals. So sorry." she laughed a mighty belly laugh.

"It's ok." Jamie said. Brecken laughed again and pushed a brown strand of his angelically curly hair away from his bright green eyes and looked at the two as if nervous. "You alright, Breck?"

"Oh yeah. I'm fine. Sorry." he said very quickly. Jamie raised his eyebrow, his signature and rather over-used questioning expression all over his face. Myra looked at the two, clearly unconvinced that there wasn't something more to the story.

"Well, sorry again. Strange, though. Nothing wrong with it. You two would look terribly adorable together." she beamed. Neither boy knew how to respond. "well, i've embarrassed myself enough for one hour. I'll be back later. I'm gonna go see what the news has to say." she rolled off of the cot and waddled back to the room where the television was. Jamie stretched out on the cot and started humming to himself. He turned to ask Brecken something, but apparently the day of excitement had gotten to him because Brecken was stretched out also and breathing heavily. Jamie took in the beautiful sight. The boy's slender figure was beautiful to Jamie and the fair skinned boy was even more adorable as he slept, peacefully. Every once in a while Brecken would reach up and grip his curly brown hair and look pleased then would fall limp again. It wasn't very long before Jamie had dozed off himself. Strangely, more at peace in his sleep than he had been in a very long time.
