Chapter 3
"Hey, kids...get up." a voice startled Jamie awake and he looked to see Myra's beaming face standing above him. He threw Brecken's arm off of him then did a double-take as he realized that he and Brecken had not fallen asleep together...certainly not in the same cot. Brecken woke up and looked at him with the same surprised expression. "So...you two aren't together, huh?" she asked again, smirking.
"Um. No. What are you doing?" Jamie asked his fellow confused teen. Brecken simply blinked and looked at him. Jamie stood and made a very disapproving face then looked back at the beaming Myra. "So. What's going on?" he asked.
"Well, the storm has passed over and made its way north. It's actually quite sunny outside. They're heading out to assess damage." she said hapilly.
"That's good." Jamie said, distracted and lost in the wonderment of how and why Brecken had ended up in the cot with him.
"How does it look?" Brecken asked. "Oh shit. I better go find wake up my parents. See ya around." Brecken jetted off. Myra looked a bit confused and then looked at the equally confused Jamie.
"You two are some confusing kids. In any case...you said your home is on the barrier island?"
"Yeah." Jamie snapped back to reality. "Heard anything?"
"Nothing good. Most of the homes on the row facing the beaches and ocean are pretty rough."
"Great. Just great." Jamie felt himself wanting to just scream for no reason. "When will the tell us anything?"
"No clue, babydoll. The bridge outta here is gonna be closed til they see the damage. You know it fell in last time and killed that truck driver. Well...they also closed off I-10 for a good piece so it looks like it'll be a few days before anyone can get out of this area or come back."
"Thanks for that Ms. Couric." Jamie laughed at her knowledge. She laughed as well.
"They have been letting people leave, though, and return to their homes if they're safe. Mine is ok, but i've got friends checking it to be one hundred percent sure." Jamie gave her an expressionless look and then went to get a coffee from an stand they'd set up. He asked the aid workers if they had any news about the barrier homes and they said the same thing Myra had told him. He thought it wise to call his mother so he went and did as much, after recieving tons of voicemails from her. When he reached her she sounded relieved and sick at the same time. He told her everything the workers had told him and she sounded close to fainting.
After a considerable amount of time had passed Jamie noticed that people were leaving the shelter, homebound. He thought it'd be worth a try to get to his home. He picked up his things and began to walk toward his Explorer. Myra waddled over from her small brick house, very close to the school, and stopped Jamie dead in his tracks. "Hey, hun. Where ya headed?"
"Oh hi. Um...well...i'm on my way to my car and i'm gonna see if i can get to my house."
"Oh that'll never work. Sorry. Didn't anyone tell you? Power lines are down all over Gulf Blvd. You can only get to the beach as you get off the bridge, but no further."
"Really?" he asked exhasperated.
"Sorry, honey. Do you know where you're gonna stay?"
"Oh, well, probably go to my aunt's house in Milton for the night."
"Well drive safe! And here...here's my number if you need anything..." she took his cell phone from him and programmed her number with the same lightning speed Jamie used when he text messaged. He was astonished. She smiled. "Anything at all. I'm here. Think of me as a new best friend." she beamed.
Jamie laughed. "Great! I'll text you sometime?" she smiled.
"Oh i live to text."
"Oh god me too!" he said like a schoolgirl then quickly regained his composure with her little know-it-all smirk that she'd used when she'd been standing over him and Brecken this morning.
"Well good. I'll talk to you soon then. Now, be safe." she said and turned abruptly and left with an eerie grin. He watched her dissapear into her tiny home and shook his head and was about to continue toward his car when he saw why she was grinning. Brecken was standing with, what appeared to be, his rather upset looking parents. He grinned and ran over to Jamie. Jamie could not help but admire how adorable his innocent grin was as he half-jogged over to him, his brunette curls bouncing with every bound. Jamie was also ashamed when he took a look at the boy's bouncing package, barely concealed by his thin running shorts. He snapped out of it and smiled as Brecken reached him.
"Hey...dude...sorry bout last night. Don't know what that was." Brecken blushed.
"Oh man it's no big. It's all chill. Don't even worry about it." Jamie blushed as well as he let his eyes roam back to the boys package, which was still rather plainly seen in the cotton shorts.
"Well...maybe i'll see you soon."
"Yeah. Maybe."
"Dude, um...how bout i get your cell phone number and call sometime. Maybe I could bump into you on purpose next time." the pair laughed.
"Ok. Here. Walk to my car with me. I am sure I have a marker or something in there." Jamie led the way and they walked over to the Explorer and after loading his things in and being complimented on for the nice vehicle, he pulled opened his glove box and inside was a blue highlighter. "This should work." he laughed. He pulled an unused napkin from the floor and wrote his number on it. "So call me..." they laughed
"Will do." Brecken smiled. "Ok. Well my parents are stressed by all of this enough so I better get back to them so we can get to the apartment. See ya..." Brecken unexpectedly threw himself around Jamie's neck and gave him a hug. Jamie slowly reciprocated and then they parted ways. Jamie started the engine and then turned around to watch Brecken walk back to his parents. Jamie had to take a quick look at the massive rounds of bubble butt the were just as plainly visible in the shorts Brecken was wearing. Jamie wondered if Brecken didn't know how revealing the shorts truly were. He grinned to himself and backed out of his parking spot.
Myra had been right about the downed power lines. Noone could make it further than the desolate beach. The pier was damamged, the guest center was roofless, the grill and bar had no deck, and the normally placid emerald water was the murky color of freshly made tea. Jamie sighed and turned around in the parking lott, where he noticed several news vans. NBC, CNN, Fox News, CBS. They all had vans and reporters all spread out along his beach giving him unwelcome eyes. He looked at them all with cotempt.
He pulled up in his aunt's driveway and she appeared outside with her arms open wide and looked sick with worry. His Aunt Vicky and his mother had the same problem. They worried too much. His aunt being a much more religious person, told him how she'd been praying for him all night. He thanked her with a large smile but he really did not feel like listening to the lecture on how God had been very loving and spared him his life. He simply feigned interest, like his mother...and unlike him, his aunt could not catch on. She just kept on talking. He had the distinct feeling the next few days were going to be like driving rusty nails up your arms. Much like any other visit with his aunt.
Jamie's mother finally returned home and had to stay an excruciating two nights with her sister. Jamie and his mother were forced to listen to televangelists all day long. Thank goodness his aunt was a soap fan too because all day listening to people shout about God would make anyone go crazy, much like his aunt. Jamie was so glad when a call finally came in from the city saying they could go to their house and see the damage.
After visiting their home they realised they'd hav to get a place to stay until the damage to the house could be repaired, and it was rather extensive so it would be months. Jamie would be forced to stay with his aunt a few more days as his mother found a place to live temporarily. After much debate with his aunt, his mother had finally managed to get her to back off and let them leave. Jamie was not dissapointed when he found out they'd be staying in the apartments right across from the barrier bridge, so he could visit his beach any time he liked. His mother had arranged to have any furniture not ruined brought to the apartment, which made his stay with his aunt much more elongated than he would have wished. Finally the day came when he left his tearful aunt and headed back to his town. It had killed him being 40 miles away. Plus at his aunt's, his cell phone didn't work due to lack of towers, so he had not been able to even recieve more than a few text messages.
As he pulled up at the apartment complex he also remembered that this was, coincidentally, where Brecken and his parents lived. He was not complaining. It'd make it easier. He'd have a friend, hopefully, who was close. Ciely lived 10 miles off in Gulf Breeze and Kamron lived in Pace so he didn't really have anyone close any more. As he went up to his apartment on the third floor, he kept bumping into complete strangers who eyed him suspiciously. It must have been the huge duffle bag he was carrying, or the lap top and cell phone and 4 bags of groceries. He made his way up until he found his temporary home. He unlocked the door and walked in to the smell of new paint. The apartment complex was very new. Maybe 6 months. He'd doubt if some of the apartments had even been lived in before.
He walked back to the room toward the back of the apartment that graciously overlooked the parking lot and highway, and had a slight view of the sound. He was glad to see his bed and television and stereo all there in one piece. Obviously his pc had not made it, since it was not among the recovered furniture. He was just glad he'd put garbage bags over the remaining electronics. On top of the tv was a new sattelite reciever. Bless his mom for at least being generous with the television...otherwise it would be the 5 religious DVDs he'd been forced to take from his aunt's by the maniac woman. He collapsed on the bed, dropping all of his things and immediately checked his voice mail. There were a few from his mother, one from Ciely, three from Kamron, and the last one that made him grin. It was one from Brecken, whose voice sounded shaky and nervous. Jamie beamed at the thought of his sexy new friend's obvious nerves. He immediately called Brecken back but got his voicemail. He left a nice message and then rolled off his bed and ran out of the apartment.
