Chapter Five
I've been more or less awake for an hour; I don't dare to move for risking the blinding lights. I'm positioned on my back at this point, my tail out to my right. On my left I have my lover with his head gently resting on my shoulder; his left leg thrown over mine, his left arm lying across my torso. It doesn't seem to bother him that his muzzle is so close to my armpit; on the contrary, my scent seems to comforts him. I lie in the darkness staring at the only light in the room; a small LED on the com panel. A selection from Michael's playlist begins to come up in volume, and Edwin McCain croons...
Lying here with you,
Listening to the rain,
Smiling just to see, The smile upon your face,
These are the moments, I thank God that I'm alive,
These are the moments, I'll remember all my life,
I found all I've waited for,
And I could not ask for more.
I emit a wave of love to him and receive it back in turn. He slowly, slowly eases his hand down onto the base of my turgid penis. I can feel his hardness pressing into my hip. We share passionate kisses in the dark as Edwin wraps up...
I could not ask for more than the love you give me,
Cause it's all I've waited for . . .
And I could not ask for more,
I could not ask for more.
...followed by the click and the blinding light. It's as if they are listening...what am I saying...they are listening, and as soon as the music stops, they turn the lights on to let us know it's time for us to start our day. Michael goes over, with his still hard dick bouncing, and checks the terminal for his assignment today.
"Hmm" he says, wagging his tail "you're to come with me today so I can show you our work environment!"
"Well, I suggest we get ready for work then" I reply.
We skip the shower this morning, too many baths cause dry, itchy skin for canids. We get dressed, and like Michael I just put on what they require for decency; the dog shorts, tank top and sandals without the toe splitter. Our toes are partially webbed and the toe-splitting type footwear is not comfortable. Since, I'm to join Michael, I don't have Niko this morning. Michael simply says "We're ready" and the door is buzzed so we can head out. I follow Michael back to the hub (where I met Sebastian) and this time, instead of going straight toward the entertainment lounge and dining area, he circles to the right, around the `welcome desk' and down another long hallway. The compound had a round center with hallways leading off; like a child's drawing of the sun...well, except for the 50 or more levels.
We arrive in a data center of sorts. Michael shows me the seating chart on which my name has been added. My work pod is an aisle over from Michael. Each of the pods is soundproofed so there is no cacophony that would be present in a more call center type environment. In front of me I have two large monitors, with my last notes already up on one of them. To my right, on the cubicle wall, is another monitor displaying a closed-circuit connection with Vasily, who is back in the lab on Level 8, now part of my forbidden zone. I can't help but notice there are no scars of the alleged explosion that allegedly destroyed my body. On my second monitor Vasily sends me the data we are to focus on for the day and set to work. I am so glad to be back working I become totally engrossed. I'm startled when Vasily breaks in on the monitor to my right to tell me it's lunch time. I look up at the monitor and nod to him. He tells me, after lunch I am to go to Gregor, only half days for me so far. I wave and tell him good day. Right on time, Michael comes round the corner and we take off to the dining room.
That's when the strange voice enters my head "Dieses Leben ist ein Albtraum im Kafka-Stil" it says. I try sending a feeling of well-being to the person. I receive no further communications from this one.
My lunch today seems to be a giant seafood platter which makes sense considering we are on an island; I briefly wonder why we don't have to eat way more seafood. Michael's is fish as well, but he is presented a special treat, something his timber wolf genes really like - salmon. Apparently, we have been deemed to be behaving properly, or at least in accordance with somebody's wishes. "I heard the voice of the German" I flick to Michael, "I tried to send him `calm'." Michael frowned into his plate "I thought we agreed not to let on we had this ability" he flashed at me angrily. Suddenly, we both get the message: ¿Quién está hablando? ¿Dónde estás? We look at each other and Michael puts a finger to his lips, the international gesture of `be quiet'. We finish our lunch quickly. I focus on silencing my thoughts until we can get away from the area. Walking to the door, we kiss briefly, then Michael goes back to work and I fall in behind Niko for my trip to see Gregor.
Niko sees me to Level 20; I get off the lift but he stays this time. I stand there until the doors close, then walk into the physical therapy lab. The lights are down very low, like they're in night mode. Gregor comes to me out of his darkened office and leads me through the dark room to what appears to be a work cubicle, but inside there is only a chair facing a blank monitor.
"Have a seat" he says, "new therapy today."
I hesitantly take a seat. Gregor quickly moves in and secures restraints around my wrists holding my arms to those of the chair.
"Merely a safety precaution" he assures me, "I'll be right back."
After he walks off, the screen comes to life, repeating a sequence of colors, one shifting into the other. The shifting colors increase in tempo until they're just a flash in front of me, almost hypnotic. Moments later I feel the same feeling I had when my memories were freed before. I feel that another part of my brain has been opened to me, but upon probing, I can't figure out what I've been given.
"How do you feel?" Gregor asks.
"Fine, just confused. I feel like part of my memories have been unlocked, but I can't find anything new" I tell him.
He unfastens the arm restraints, and says "Come. I will show you." I follow him to a small separate room at the back of the gym. When we walk in, he takes a long wooden pole from its holder on the wall and walks to the middle of the room, I walk behind him. He abruptly turns and swings the pole in an arc toward me. I dodge and drop inches from the floor. He lifts the pole (my thoughts tell me it's called a Bo), and tries to bring it down full force on top of my head. I roll to my back and catch it in my hands no less than an inch from my face, then use the momentum to throw Gregor to the side. He rolls and jumps back to his feet, runs to the wall and retrieves nunchucks. He runs at me twirling them, I jump to my feet. My eyes follow the movements of the weapon; it almost seems like slow motion to me. When he has come within my reach, I grab the handle at the end of the flying chain and jerk Gregor in a circle, pulling the chain around his neck.
"What the hell are you trying to do?" I fiercely growl at him.
"Showing you the memories unlocked" he pants, "you are a master in several martial arts...as am I, I might add in case you get any ideas. I've been holding back to test your skills."
To prove his point, with lightning speed he turns and ducks and I end up with the chain at my neck almost before I know what's happening. Just as quickly, he drops the weapon.
"We just need to work on your speed" he says, exuding arrogance. "Know this, my uchenik, I can turn these skills off as quickly as I turn them on. You will not be allowed to run amuck." At this revelation, I go back to my practiced submissiveness. Avoiding his eyes, I quietly say "Yes sir." In my mind, I realize that the mental gates are triggered by coded wavelengths of light; that's why the monitor kept repeating the sequence of colors. Someone had my owner's manual; that's the person I needed to find. We practiced moves for another hour until I was nearly exhausted, then Gregor released me for rest and dinner. On the way out of the dojo, I was greeted with a blinding burst of colors from a fixture above the door.
"Simply a precaution" Gregor said, "no skills beyond the dojo, at least for now." Niko waited to escort me.
"Pochemu ty rabotayesh' na nikh, Niko?"(why do you work for them?) I ask in a barely audible whisper.
"Kakoy u menya yeshche vybor?" (what other choice do I have?) he answers quietly. I nod, understanding.
"I've think I've figured out the problem. Think of me, specifically, before you think *to* me" Michael flicked at me.
I pictured his face, then sent "Can you hear me?" We waited, but the others did not respond. "I think your hypothesis is now a working theory" I flicked. I asked Michael to try asking the German what is his name. Michael looked undecided but sent "Hab keine Angst. Wie heißt Du?" (Don't be afraid. What is your name?)
"Oh lieber Gott, ich verliere den Verstand" we both heard. "What does that mean?" I queried Michael. "He says `Oh dear God, I'm losing my mind" he told me, then to the German he said "Nein, Du verlierst nicht den Verstand. Du bist nicht allein. Lassen Sie niemanden wissen, dass Sie Stimmen hören. Wir, die wie Sie sind, können kommunizieren." Michael let me know he assured the man he was not going crazy and for him to keep this ability to himself.
My turn, I said. I thought of the Spanish voice, holding it in my mind then sent "No estas solo. No les haga saber que puede escucharnos." (You are not alone. Don't let them know you hear us.)
"Entiendo. ¿Quién eres tú?" came the response (I understand. Who are you?)
"Nosotros somos amigos" (We are friends) I sent back "Nosotros somos como tu" (We are like you).
In my case, there seemed to be a programming error. Every time I was exposed to the visual array to unlock portions of my memory or programming, something else would unintentionally be unlocked. This time it was minor; the two semesters of Spanish I took in school. I asked Michael on our private channel how they facilitated his memory additions or programming. He said he wasn't sure but every time they had put headphones on him and played tones, so he assumed the tones must be coded.
"Hey handsome, want to fool around?" I ask aloud, more for the monitor's entertainment than anything else.
"Not tonight" Michael said "I think the fish at lunch was a little off; I don't feel well."
"It's getting late anyway, maybe we should just turn in" I suggested.
"Sounds good to me" he said.
We stripped and got in bed. As soon as we settled in the light shut off.
