Cole's Redemption
Chapter 15
Nothing should be concealed from children on the pretext that they are little and that it is too early for them to understand.? Fyodor Dostoyevsky The Idiot
Cole
July was upon us now, and Justin and I were in the kitchen as I was working on getting some of the preparations ready for dinner. He had been busy with having gone to a camp that week before, so he and I were just now starting to catch up on hanging out more. It was really good to see him again, and he was definitely glad to see me when he got home once Daniel picked him up and brought him back home.
As we stood there at the kitchen counter that Thursday evening, I was chopping vegetables for a salad, while Justin was working on putting seasonings on the Chicken we would be having. Daniel was on his way home, and we decided to work on getting a start on things to surprise him. Justin and I were working first in silence, then we were talking about how much we both enjoyed running on the track earlier that day that was by the school that they still kept opened for that purpose. Then there was silence again, and by this time Justin was finished with his part of the meal prep. I took the chicken, then got it in the pan, then set the salad aside. Justin then looked in my direction, and his aim was really good.
"I imagine that you probably wish that Kevin was eating with us tonight," he said.
"Yeah, it would be nice if he could be here tonight," I replied.
I knew that Kevin and Justin were getting along really well, and I was glad to see that. I was also glad to see how well Kevin was doing with finding different ways to communicate with Justin with him not being able to see Kevin's hands as it related to his Sign Language.
"So when you guys finish with school, are you guys going to live together?" Justin asked. "I mean after you guys graduate from high school in a couple of years."
"I'd like that," I answered.
I wondered what Justin would say, or ask next. I hadn't told him about Kevin and I yet, as things had been so busy, and then I didn't want to drop it on him while he was at camp with us only having a few minutes to talk on the phone.
"That sounds good," he replied. "When do you think the wedding will be? If you have it at any point soon, I'd be glad to be your Best Man."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I was truly amazed about how perceptive my younger brother was.
"Justin, what makes you think we would be getting married?" I asked, still a bit unsure if he was also trying to make a joke about it.
"I can still sense what's going on around me with people, it's no different than other people, but they have their sight, and I don't," he answered still facing me.
"Okay, I understand," I said. "It's not that I didn't take you seriously, but I was just trying to see how much you might understand. Obviously none of us had said anything to you about Kevin and I, as far as it goes about us being more than friends. We were just waiting for a good time to tell you."
"Well, it's been clear to me for a while how you guys felt about each other, especially you when you'd talk about Kevin, or when you would be talking to him," Justin said. "You'd get this extra happy sound to your voice."
"Interesting," I replied. "Well, it's true that he and I have become boyfriends, and that we love each other. We love each other very much in fact, and while I don't know if marriage will be in the plans for us, at least not yet anyway, if we do get married though, I'd be truly honored if you'd be my Best Man. I would really love that, and that would deeply mean a lot to me."
"Thanks, and I'm glad," Justin answered as we shared a long hug.
Daniel got home a few minutes later, and we all enjoyed dinner once it was fixed. I then talked to Kevin on Video Chat, and I told him about how Justin figured us out. He smiled, and he said that he was glad that Justin knows, and is as supportive as he has been. I told him that I felt the same way, and then we talked a little more, then we eventually signed off, and I went on to relax for the rest of the evening.

"Alright!" Edgar Bradly yelled over the noise of the guys in the room that was in one of the barns out back behind the main house. "Everyone shut the hell up!"
They all quieted down immediately, and then one of the guys brought out the paper that was meant for the board that Edgar stood beside.
"Ready for the paper now?" Hank, Edgar's Second in Command asked.
"Put it up here," he said.
Hank did so, then Edgar turned to it.
"What you're looking at is our plans for the immediate future," Edgar announced. "We were able to avoid capture, because we obviously destroyed everything, so when that traitorous Bastard Cole Hoffman went to the police, he told everything, but fortunately with one of our own on the inside there, we got a few steps ahead of those fucking Jew-Loving Pigs! Now though, we have another loose end to tie up! I fucking hate those! I absolutely fucking hate those! Anyone want to guess what, or who that loose end is?"
"Cole?" one of the younger guys asked.
"That's correct Ted," Edgar replied. "We've dealt with those who've turned on us before, and we only dealt with about three of them, but we can add Cole to the list. He betrayed us, and he will fucking pay for that!"
Everyone shouted their agreement, and then Hank spoke.
"Ben Jones, our contact in the Sangger Police Department has secretly spied on Cole, and he tracked him to a house where he lives with a guy named Daniel Rossington, and the guy has a 11-year-old son named Justin."
"Interesting," Edgar said. "Go on."
"Cole's been living with these two since January of last year," Hank continued. "Ben has continued tracking the so-called family, and a black-haired guy has been seen several times at Daniel's house. From how him and Cole interact, they must be Fuck Buddies with each other. So they're shacked up together and being Fags with one another. That's what I got so far."
"Good work," Edgar said. "Have Ben continue tracking Cole. I'll let you know when the tracking needs to stop."
"What happens after that?" Hank asked.
"I'll let you know when the time is right," Edgar replied, and smiled to himself.

It was now the middle of July, and it was a hot sunny day outside. I walked along ready to have lunch. Once I got to the small diner that Daniel and us would sometimes go to, I sat down inside, and looked through the menu. Once I decided on what I wanted, I looked up to see a new waitress approaching my table. She looked like she was new, as I hadn't seen her when we all ate there earlier the month before.
"Hi, I'm Hellen," she said. "I'll be your server today."
"Thanks," I replied. "I'm Cole."
"It's nice to meet you Cole," she answered as we shook hands.
I put in my order, then she left to give it to the people back in the kitchen. It then came out a few minutes later, and as she brought it out, other staff in the restaurant were going on break.
"It doesn't seem too busy here for the lunch hour," I said as Hellen stood there waiting for the other workers to clear out of the room in which we were situated.
"It has been a little quiet today," she said in agreement.
"You do look kind of tired," I said hoping I wasn't out of line. "If you want to sit down here for a few minutes, I'm good with that."
"Thanks!" she said. "I could use a few minutes sitting down!"
"I'm glad," I answered.
I told her a little more about myself, then she told me that she had been living here in Sangger for about the last 15 years, and before that she had been from a small town in Utah. She went on to say that while living in Utah for the first 18 years of her life, she was born in to a Mormon family with all that implied.
"Sorry, but I'm not too familiar with what Mormons do, other than that fucked up Warren Jeffs crowd," I said not trying to hide my contempt for what sounded to me like nothing more than a group of women being raped and abused under the guise of religion.
"You definitely don't hold back," she said smiling.
"No, I guess I don't," I replied smiling back.
"It's basically go to church on Sunday, no TV, buying things or working, and that's all on Sunday after church," she continued. "Oh yeah, and no premarital sex, no masturbation for the guys, and no LGBT stuff of any sort at all."
"Hmm, other than that, sounds like a Heavenly Utopia," I said.
She laughed, and I joined in.
"It sounds like you're either a less practicing Mormon now, or you've left the church all together?" I went on.
"I left shortly after I turned 18," she said. "I had been with a guy, and we had been together one night shortly after we both turned 18, and after I started well, "Showing" if you know what I mean, my dad straight out asked me if I was pregnant, and when I paused for a moment, he was kind enough to call me a empty-headed and young and dumb Slut, and after I told him that I thought I was, the church basically told my boyfriend and I that unless we broke up, and unless I went off to have the baby then give it up for adoption, then we were both out of the church."
"That's disgusting!" I said truly horrified.
"Well, I wasn't going to be bullied, and so they excommunicated both of us, and we then moved to another small town outside of Sangger, and while we had been living in Utah, he was really a nice guy."
A look then passed over her face, and I picked up on it immediately.
"I'm guessing that once you guys moved out of state, and in together he wasn't so nice at that point?" I said. "How did you guys even support yourselves?"
"His dad gave us a huge amount of money to start out on," she replied, and an acidic tone was in her voice now, and I wasn't sure if she was aware of that or not. "When he handed over the money, he said we could consider it our Severance Package."
"What a Bastard!" I said truly angry now, as it sounded like though her boyfriend didn't turn out to be a good guy, it basically sounded like she really had gotten a raw deal in all of that situation from those who should have stood by her, as well as protected her!
"That's one way to put it," she answered.
The door to the restaurant opened, then about seven people walked in, and then Hellen came back to herself as if she had been a million miles away which I supposed she had been.
"Wow, I'm sorry!" she said seemingly worried. "I really didn't mean to dump all that on you! I really'''!"
"That's alright," I said smiling. "I'm only 16, but I had to do a lot of growing up in a really short amount of time. I'm glad you felt comfortable to tell me a little about yourself."
"Thanks," she replied. "I'm glad I didn't cause you any discomfort, but I had in mind when talking about myself, I figured on telling you about how I enjoy staying at home reading when it's a dark rainy day out, or about how I enjoy tending to my plants in my garden in back of the house. You know, less glamorous stuff than what I just shared with you."
"I'd like to hear about all that sometime as well," I answered as I finished my food.
"Thanks," she said. "I'm glad to hear that. I do have to tend to the people who just came in, but it was really nice meeting you, as well as talking with you."
"It was nice meeting you," I replied. "It was also really nice talking with you as well."
We shook hands again, and then after paying the bill, I left to go back home.
Throughout the rest of that day and on in to the evening, I thought about Hellen, and the little bit of her story about which she told me. It really was disgusting, as well as sad how everyone around her put some fucked up system above really being there for her! I couldn't believe it, but when I stopped for a moment to think about all the shit through which I endured over the years, then I could sadly believe that something like that could have occurred in Hellen's life.
When the weekend arrived, Kevin and I spent it at my house. We hung out in my room for most of Friday evening, and Justin even joined us to watch stuff on my computer, and after he hung with us for a bit, he went off to spend some time in his room to wind down before he got to bed. Daniel and I along with Kevin then went out in to the living room to talk for a bit, and it was a really nice time of us all enjoying one another's company. Eventually though, Kevin and I said good night to Daniel, and once in the hallway, we went in to Justin's room where he was lying under the covers, and we both arranged the covers around him, and Daniel came in and after they said good night to each other, Kevin and I took our turns.
"It was really fun hanging out with you guys tonight," Justin said as first I kissed him good night, then he allowed for Kevin to do the same.
"I enjoyed it as well," I replied.
"So did I," Kevin said as I translated for him.
"I hope you guys sleep well," Justin said as we sat there both lightly stroking his hair which always relaxed him even more.
"I hope the same for you," I answered.
"So do I," Kevin responded.
"I love you guys," Justin said as he began falling even more asleep.
"We love you too," Kevin and I both said.
After he started snoring lightly, Kevin and I stood up, then after turning off the bedside lamp, and making sure the door to his room was closed, we returned to our room after getting a quick shower.

Hellen placed the papers back in the envelope in which they had been given to her at the hospital that day. She had gotten testing done, specifically genetic testing. She was thinking more and more about having kids, and that was something she had always wanted. She remembered what had happened when she was kicked out of the church with Andrew who was the guy she had been with at the time. This part was what she hadn't told Cole about the day before at the restaurant, and even now to this day she still got upset thinking about it.
She had gotten pregnant, but when she started having labor pains, they got her to the hospital. Once there, the pain got bad enough so that they gave her something to make her fall unconscious, then when she woke up, she noticed that her father, her boyfriend and her boyfriend's father were by her bedside. There was no baby though.
"Where's my baby?" she asked trying to fight off the effects of the drugs they gave her.
"It's alright Hellen," her dad said. "You'll be alright now."
"Just relax Hellen," Andrew said.
"I want to know where my baby is!" she said trying to sit up, but instantly felt pain in her abdomen. "What's happened! Why do I feel this sharp pain!"
"Really sweet heart," her dad said in that patronizing tone she so completely hated. "Everything is alright."
She fell back asleep, but eventually awoke the next day, and with most of the drugs out of her system by now, she questioned her father and Andrew more firmly now, and they exchanged a look, then her father stood over her looking down at her with that expression that always made her shut down and obey him in the past.
"You need to understand that I'm your father, and sometimes I have had to do what needed to be done to protect you," he began in that same tone she hated, but it was now edged with a sharp quality. "Now is an example of one of those times. You acted irresponsibly, got yourself knocked up, then disobeyed Heavenly Father's commandments of not having sex before marriage. You know that sex before marriage is a sin next to murder! Hellen, you know this!"
"I've asked for forgiveness," Andrew interjected. "You should do the same."
"I'll ask you only one more god-damned time!" Hellen said staring daggers at her father. "Where is my baby!"
He reached out, and slapped Hellen across the face, but she held her gaze, and hoped that every ounce of hate and contempt was being communicated through it, and she suspected that it was, for he moved away about an inch.
"I'm sorry I did that," he said. "You just get me so frustrated sometimes. Under the circumstances, I can't blame you for it. You wouldn't be a typical young female with all that that implies if you didn't act out once in a while.
That being said, to answer your question, your baby was delivered last night. They had to give you the drugs to knock you out, and that was because your vitals were going off the charts. They delivered your baby, and all the papers have been signed."
"What papers," Hellen said with her eyes glued to her father's. "What are you talking about!"
"I knew that you weren't ready for a baby," her father began. "I talked it over with your mother, and shortly before you went in to labor a few days ago, I talked with Andrew about it. Long story short, we signed papers to have your baby adopted, and Andrew knew of a couple who was looking for a child. They'll take good care of it, and they'll be over to sign the final papers tomorrow.
Now, before you go pulling all that "I'm 18 years old, and can do whatever the hell I want!" crap with me little girl, I'll have you know that I talked with an attorney, and one of the judges I know has been sense informed of your questionable behavior that could put your abilities to healthily care for a child at risk. He agreed to help with any adoption proceedings, and that was when I started looking in to this process. I made the judge aware of your having drank alcohol with friends a couple of times back when you were 14, that time when you took off with one of your female friends when you were both 16, and how in the middle of your guys' little joy ride, she crashed the car, and then I also informed Judge Fielding about how you were unfaithful to your covenants with what you and Andrew did. When I let Andrew know what was going on, he repented as I said, and he also recognized that you're both not ready to care for a child, especially your own."
"You Bastard!" Hellen said attempting to communicate more hate towards her father with not only her look, but through her tone of voice as well. "You gave my baby away without me having any say in the matter! That time when I drank with my friends was only one drink, and it was one of our friends who brought over the alcohol, and I didn't even know that it was going to be there with us! As for the "Joy Ride" as you called it, did you even bother to tell your bought-off judge that when my friend and I left that night, you had just slammed me against the wall when I forgot to study one of the verses of scripture you outlined for me that night? Did you even tell him that! No, of course you fucking didn't! It's all about what "Daddy" wants isn't it!"
"Watch your mouth!" he growled at her leaning in close again.
"No!" she said leaning in close to him surprising him. "No, I won't fucking watch my mouth you child-stealing Bastard! It's all about what you want, it's always been about what you've wanted right from the start! Good old Howard Johnston, and his self-image! That's what it's really always been about for you isn't it!
Well, let me tell you something Howard! If I had any doubts about what a selfish Bastard you are, who's cold and unfeeling towards his own daughter, then they were erased now! Damn you! I will never forgive you for this! Also, if you think I won't find'''!"
"The adoption is a closed adoption," Howard said watching her. "In short, this form of adoption gives you no rights to the child what-so-ever, and there's no changing that."
"And you're just going along with this!" Hellen said jerking her head to the left to look at Andrew who had sat through the whole exchange un sure what to do."
"Honey, the reality is, is that we just can't afford a baby right now," he said reaching for her hand which she yanked away angrily. "Even if we didn't belong to God's One True Church on Earth, we're just not ready for a baby right now."
"Get out!" she said softly, then she screamed the last few words. "Get out both of you! Get out! Get out!"
They did so, then Andrew returned a couple of hours later. They talked, and after he pleaded his case once more, Hellen, being either too tired, too sad or both agreed to drop it, and it stayed dropped for the next couple of years until she left Andrew once he really started physically and verbally abusing her.
Remembering all of that still caused Hellen to get upset, and it was just as raw as it had been that day in the hospital. The next day when she had to sign the papers, she asked her father if she could at least know the names of the couple to whom her baby was being adopted, and she asked if the baby was a boy or a girl. He said that she wasn't allowed to know any of that, and he ordered her to sign, and feeling total defeat she signed her name.
She felt like a part of her died that day, and once moving to Sangger after leaving Andrew, she cut off contact with her mother and father, then did her best to build a life for herself over the last several years.
After Hellen looked at the papers for a second time that Friday night, she was relieved to see that she could still get pregnant. She didn't exactly think that she'd have any trouble, but she wanted to at least be sure of that given how everything had been pulled out from under her all those years ago. She half expected for the papers to have been tampered with possibly by her father, and showing that she was infertile. At this point, she could see the Bastard being capable of something like that.
After she put the papers in the safe that was in her study, she locked up the house for the night, turned off all the lights save for the one in her bedroom, and after getting ready for bed, she got in bed then turned off the lights, and quickly fell asleep.

Once in bed that night, Kevin and I lay in each other's arms after exchanging a couple of tender kisses, and I could tell that he knew that something was bothering me. I looked in to his eyes, and he looked at me questioningly.
I told him about Hellen, and about how her story really worried me. He listened, then leaned in kissing me softly on the cheek.
"You really do have a good and caring personality," he said. "That's one thing that has totally amazed me about you."
"Thanks," I answered. "I just can't believe how badly her family, her boyfriend's family and that fucked up church treated her. It's like none of them even cared, and in some ways I can relate. I too know what it's like to have those who were supposed to protect you actually turn out to be the very ones from whom I needed protection, and I don't want anyone ever to have to go through anything like that."
"I don't want anyone having to deal with shit like that either, not adults, nor children," Kevin responded.
"I don't know how I can fight shit like that," I went on. "I know that I want to though."
"I'll be there right by your side," he answered.
"I know you will," I said. "I love you Kevin."
"I love you too Cole," he replied, then we kissed once more before falling asleep.
Author's Notes
I hope all of you liked how I eventually had Cole talking with Justin about him and Kevin. I had been thinking about how to do that for a while, so was glad to have written that scene. I'm sure you're all probably also wondering what's going to happen where Edgar Bradly and his group of scumbags are concerned, and not to worry. That will be answered in time.
As for Hellen, I can only imagine you all questioning where she'll fit in to all of this. You'll find that out as well in the coming chapters, and I even surprised myself at her addition to the story, and the role she'll play in the lives of Daniel and all of the boys.
Having said all that, I hope everyone has had a good day, is staying safe and has a good evening. I'll see everyone in Chapter 16.
