Come Sail Away

Chapter 3

He really made me feel good. God knows I needed to laugh more, and he could do it. And do it with what seemed like little effort. Hmmm I thought to myself, our first date. I wish. If he only knew how in less than one day, he has changed my life. I drove towards Arby's and kept thinking. First date...First date, if he was only that way. If only......

The sailboat caught my attention again. It was a good-looking boat I thought. I stood up and decided that I was going to keep exploring. I have been down here dozens of times, but never really made it past the public beach area. Glancing at my watch again, I realized that time was standing still it seemed. It was still early morning and I had the whole day to just walk and think.

A song was stuck in my head. Did you ever get a song in your head, and no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't shake it. Well I had the song "Come Sail Away" going round and round.

I Look To The Sea

Reflections In The Waves

Some Happy, Some Sad

I Think Of Childhood Friends

And The Dreams We Had

We Lived Happily Forever

So The Story Goes

But Somehow We Missed Out

On The Pot Of Gold

But We'll Try The Best That

We Can To Carry On...........

The Game was great. We won, and won big time. I cannot remember the last time I had that much fun. Im pretty sure Brian had a good time. He sure seemed wound up. We walked to the truck, talking and laughing. It was like we had known each other forever. We were still aways from the truck, and out of nowhere He jumps on my back and acts like he wants a ride.

"Come on Scott, Lets have some fun tonight." I was grinning from ear to ear. "Look buddy, you have to be home right after the game. Or did you forget about that woman doing her Mom Thing?" After I said that, all the energy just seemed to drain from him, he sort of went limp on my back and slid off. I stopped and turned to face him.

"What's wrong"? I waited, and nothing. He kinda kicked off towards the truck. I didn't know what I said, but his mood took a big swing. Big enough, that he seemed to loose the aura that made him special. That bright light that seemed to surround him, the one that appeared after we first met and talked. We walked in silence, or what was silence to me. God knows there was traffic everywhere as 8000 people all tried to get to their cars and out of the lot as fast as they could. I started the truck, and still nothing. Brian had not said a word to me since he slid off my back. I turned the truck off and slid around on the seat. "All right Brian, what's wrong, what did I say?" He was sitting there staring out the window. He turned to me with a long face.

"Shit dude, im sorry. Nothings wrong, I had a great time tonight. I was having such a fun time". He paused for a second, and this time I seen him really look into my eyes. I mean really look deep and said. "I just didn't want it to end. That's all."

I felt a tug at my heart, as if someone was squeezing me real hard. I was still staring into his eyes. I wanted so badly to reach up and stroke his cheek.

"Well I'll tell you what. I have nothing going on tomorrow. Do you have any homework or anything that you need to do, or family type obligations?"

He thought for a second and said "no."

"Well how about you and me getting together tomorrow and doing something then"? I saw him smirk a little. He kinda looked at me, got this real smart assed look on his face. "What are you talking about? There's no game tomorrow". I must have looked like a deer staring into headlights.

"What, " that was all I could say. He looked straight out the trucks front window and shook his head.

"I was talking about the hockey game. I was hoping it would go into Overtime. I was really in the mood to watch hockey tonight." I must have got, what could on be described as - The Dumbass Look-. He then started snorting. He was trying real hard not to laugh.

Finally he just let loose with the funniest damn laugh I have ever heard.

"Dude, I only wish I had a camera. The look on your face a second ago was priceless. I'm fuckin with ya dude. I was actually hoping that maybe you might want to come back over to my house, and maybe hang out for a while". I just started to laugh.

"Man I can't believe it. You are even a bigger smart ass than me."

"Well", he kind of smiled and said. "I am now officially better at two things, Hockey and being a smart ass".

"Well I don't know about that hockey thing", I smiled and said. "But I do know one thing". Holding as straight of face as I could. "You do still owe me that Blow Job". I hesitated just for a moment. Not giving him enough time to say anything though.

"Sure, I guess I can stop over for a little while."

"SHIT", he drawled off in his best southern slang. "You might as well bring a tent then.

Cause your gonna be camping out and waiting a long time." At the same time, we both started laughing. The aura was back, and it seemed to be shining even a little brighter. I looked him straight in the eyes.

"Well it's kind of cold outside, but I don't have to be home at any particular time tonight". Pausing for a second.

"YEAH". He said real loud. "Why don't you see if you can just spend the night"? His voice kinda trailing off. "That is if you want to? I mean we could play some games, or watch a movie." I know I got this really big smile on my face. I looked at him and said.

"You mean your not getting tired of me yet"? He got this serious look on his face.

"Not sure yet. I'll let you know tomorrow morning."

"Oh you do that. What, am I going to get a report card or something to take home and have my mom sign? And then bring back to you the next day"?

"Nope", pausing for a second. "There wont be any coming back. You only get one shot. Mess up and boom. Your gone, history, vamoose".

"Well", looking as serious as I could. "I guess if I decide that I want to keep you around. I better try real hard then to make a good impression."

"It's too late for that don't you think? He then cocked off that great smile of his. "Better look for a different angle". I could only laugh. He made me feel so good. I don't think I have ever laughed so much. My head felt light, I was floating, and it literally felt like my feet weren't even on the ground. As we drove towards his house, we talked about what we liked to do, and what kind of games we liked to play. The trash talk was cheap and the air seemed to be filled with slander and lies. I think we only stopped short of trashing each others respected mothers. Arriving at his house, the place seemed dark. There was no sign of life when we walked in. His mother was waiting up for him. He asked if I could stay the night.

"I knew I would end up feeding this one soon. Sure she laughed, if it's all right with his folks"

"I'm sure it will not be a problem". I called to tell Mom that I was staying at a friend's house. And like I thought, it wasn't a problem. We headed back up to his room. This time I took the time to really look around. I was trying to figure him out. This was as close a look as I could get right now. There are always some tell tale signs in a persons room as to who they really are. Nothing really caught my eye. The usual stuff you expect to find. Sport posters. Hockey mainly. There was also a set of golf clubs in the corner, and two big Bulletin boards full of ribbons for swimming and diving. On top of his dresser were trophies for the same. I stopped and looked at all the ribbons he had won and started talking about them. This was what seemed to be his real love. And by the looks of it, he was damn good at it. We decided that maybe it might be kind of late to play games tonight since Mom was going to bed. A movie it would be then. I kicked off my shoes and made myself comfortable. Brian did the same. He had a queen-sized bed in the room. He plopped pillows down at the foot of the bed, and I picked a spot on the floor. We then started to just talk again. Nothing real earth shattering important. I mean we didn't discuss world peace or anything, just talked. It was nice, I felt so comfortable being with him. "You know what Scott. I don't think I have ever met someone that I could just sit and talk with. Its like we both think alike. Can I ask you a question"?

I pondered his question for a brief moment. And then said "sure". Well he paused for a second, turned and looked me in the eyes.

"Do you have a lot of friends"? This question kind of caught me off guard.

"Well, I have friends. But what do you mean by friends? If you mean like friends that I hang out with everyday and stuff, then I guess the answer would be No. How about you, do you have friends?"

"Well", kind of him hawing around a little he said. "I have friends at school and stuff. But I don't have a best friend or anything. I use to, but he died about a year ago". I stammered a little not really knowing what to say.

"Damn dude, sorry to hear that. Were you guys like best friends from school or something"? He did not answer right away. I could start to see his eyes getting puffy.

And then a single tear rolled down his cheek. He turned away from me, trying to hide the fact that he was starting to cry. Finally he spoke.

"No, he was my Brother, my twin Brother" He turned back towards me, there were two tear trails down his cheeks now. On instinct I reached up and placed my hand on his cheek. I brushed the one tear away with my thumb. Letting go of his cheek, I brushed the other away with the back of my hand. He got this strange look on his face.

Damn I thought, I shouldn't have done that. I pulled my hand back and I kind of looked away. I heard him sniff a couple of times and then he finally spoke again. I'm sure he felt the tension in the room.

"You know what Scott, I could tell you were different" I glanced up and looked him in the eye. I was waiting for the inevitable. -You're a Fag aren't you-, but that comment never came. He smiled a little and said.

"That's why I liked you the minute I started talking to you. I could tell that you were a person who really cared about people. Thanks for not thinking I was some kind of pussy for crying." I reached out and kind of punched him in the leg. I looked at him and tried to lighten the mood a little.

"Well I still think you're a pussy, but it has nothing to do with you crying."

"Fuck you asshole." He kind of giggled and wiped his nose. I just rolled back on the floor and cracked up again.

"Got ya, that's for the overtime comment you said earlier tonight." We just sat there and kind of looked at each other. It was probably, only for a couple of seconds, but it actually felt like time was standing still.

"Well what do you feel like watching tonight?" I glanced over to the clock and seen it was 2:15 in the morning.

"Damn dude, look what time it is." He glanced over and got this look of shock on his face.

"WHOA, I had no idea it was that late. Well, we can still watch a movie if you want to."

I kind of stretched, still feeling soar from the game earlier today.

"Maybe next time, that is if I get good marks tomorrow on my report card."

Smiling he once again started to giggle. I was really starting to fall in love with his laugh.

"Well you're right on the border now, I will let you know in the morning." I smiled back and tried to put my best smart-assed look on.

"Well the Jury is still out on you too."

He threw a pillow at me and I grabbed it and asked for a blanket. He started insisting that he should sleep on the floor since I was the guest. I played it off, knowing full well that it would be safer for me right now to just sleep on the floor. I wanted this friendship too bad to screw up by doing something stupid. I would hold my feelings in check, and just wait and see.

As my eyes grew accustom to the darkness of the room, I started to hear all the sounds of his house. It's strange how you never hear the sounds of your own house. But when your not home, all sounds seem magnified and strange. I drifted in and out, but really couldn't sleep that well. My mind was on Brian. He was sleeping just a few feet away from me, and I really was starting to have feelings for him. I finally decided that it would be best to just let well enough alone. If anything was going to happen. Then it would happen on its own, and because it was meant to happen. I glanced up at the clock on his nightstand and seen that it was almost 4:00 A.M. I had to get some sleep. I started to hear Brian breathing heavy and kicking around in the bed. I sat up and tried to see what was going on. He was mumbling something; he must be having a dream. His trashing became worse, and he was really tossing a lot. I crawled over to the side of the bed; I tried to shake him awake. His arms were flailing around, and I thought he was going to hit me. He suddenly screamed out and sat straight up in his bed.

"Brian, its me Scott, are you O.K.?" He seemed disoriented, not sure where he was at, and looking confused. "What, ah yeah im fine man." I could see that his cheeks had a slight sheen to them. He had been crying.

"Hey buddy, im here for you. Are you sure you are O.K. Do you need anything, can I get you anything." He wiped his face and fell back towards his pillow, letting out a long and loud sigh. I stayed by his side and just waited for him to say something. Finally after a few minutes he turned and looked at me.

"So, I guess you must think im some kinda pussy. I have known you for only one day, and you have now seen me cry twice." I started to reach up and caress his face and stopped. I grabbed his pillow instead.

"Hey, I don't think you're a pussy. In fact, I think your great." He turned his head towards me, and then turned and looked straight up at the ceiling again.

"Tonight was the first hockey game I had been to since my brother died. We always went to the games together. As far as that goes, we did everything together." Not sure what to say I hesitated for a moment. I didn't want to sound stupid. I finally asked him.

"Brian" I said real soft. "If you don't want to talk about it I understand." Pausing, wondering if now was the time to ask or not. "How did your Brother die?" He kind of looked at me, then away again. He grabbed the pillow and pulled it over his face. "I heard him start to cry again.

This time I didn't care what he thought. He needed a friend, and I wanted to be that more than anything. I leaned down and rested my head on the pillow and grabbed his hand. He started to pull away and then stopped. Then he squeezed my hand and just sobbed. After a few minutes he calmed down and pulled the pillow away. I sat up, still holding his hand. Any other time this would have made me pop a tent in my shorts. But at this moment, that would have been selfish. Now I just had to be there for him. I slowly let go of his hand and sat back. He wiped his face and looked at me.

"I haven't had that dream in a long time" I reached out and caressed his arm. "Hang tight buddy, I will be right back" I took off downstairs and went to the kitchen. I opened the fridge and grabbed a cold Pepsi. As I was walking up the steps his mom opened her Bedroom door.

"What's going on Scott Is everything O.K.?" I was scared that she would be mad at me for waking her up so I told her.

"Well Brian had a bad dream and I just went to get him something cold to drink. That's all." She sighed and looked at me.

"Did he tell you what his dream was about?"

I wasn't sure, but I did have an idea. "Well, he told me about his Brother. Im really sorry, I had no idea." She tried to put a smile on her face.

"Its O.K. honey, I appreciate you being a friend to Brian. We will talk more later. Don't tell Brian, O.K.?" I looked at her and shook my head and walked back to Brian's room. I walked in and he was sitting up on the side of his bed. He had a surprised look on his face. "Sorry I took so long, I don't know your house that well and got lost." Brian just starred at me. "What's wrong buddy?" He shook his head and then said real soft.

"I didn't think you were coming back. I was listening to see if I could hear your truck start. I thought for sure you took off." I walked over to the side of his bed and kneeled down in front of him.

"Why would you think I would do something like that?" His eyes seemed to be starring a hole in me. It was too dark. I couldn't see them, but I felt them.

"Why?" He kept starring at me. "Why are you being so nice to me?" I set the pop on his nightstand and turned back to face him again.

"Well", pausing for a second. "Cause you have never given me a reason not to be." I reached over and handed him the drink. I sat back down on the floor. I looked him straight in the face. He took a long swig off his drink and then set it back down. "Brian, remember what I said earlier tonight?" He wiped his face and shook his head no. "Well like I said earlier, you aint never had a friend like me." He smiled, and crawled back in to bed. I did the same and the room got quiet again. This time I was lying closer to his side of the bed. I scrunched my pillow trying to get comfy. My head was swimming with all that had happened. I let out a soft sigh, and was letting the day wash away when I felt a hand touch me. I jumped a little and looked up. Brian's arm was hanging over the side of the bed. He was lying there just looking at me.

"You O.K.?" He ran his hand over my back and then patted me gently.

"Yeah im O.K. Just wanted to let you know that I just filled out your report card. I gave you an A." I reached up and caressed the side of his face. I ruffled his hair a little, and gently stroked it. " Well then im sure you will be glad to hear that I have decided to keep you too...."

I reached down and grabbed a rock from the side of the lake and tossed it as far as I could. It was like I was trying to throw away all the pain. I remembered that night like it was just yesterday. I remembered it so well. As long as I live I will always remember. The sun was really shining bright. I kept walking. People were everywhere, all doing there own thing. All of them lost in there own thoughts. I kept walking and thinking. I had a Raven of my own to deal with.

The playing field is all set. Let the games begin. You have just had a look into my mind; I have shared something with you that few others know. The pace of the games now picks up and starts to run. Hang on. Cause time starts to fly.
