Come Sail Away

Chapter 4

"You O.K.?" He ran his hand over my back and then patted me gently.

"Yeah im O.K. Just wanted to let you know that I just filled out your report card. I gave you an A."

I reached up and let my fingers caress the side of his face. I ruffled his hair a little, and gently stroked it. " Well then im sure you will be glad to hear that I have decided to keep you too."..........

I reached down and grabbed a rock from the side of the lake and tossed it as far as I could. It was like I was trying to throw away all the pain. I remembered that night like it was just yesterday. I remembered it so well. As long as I live I will always remember.

The sun was really shining bright. I kept walking. People were everywhere, all doing there own thing. All of them lost in there own thoughts. I kept walking and thinking. I had a Raven of my own to deal with.

I walked over to the picnic area. It was still early so no one was using any of the tables. Hell as far as that goes, it might be too cold for anybody to think about eating out today. The sun seemed to warm the air a little, but when the wind came in off the lake, it still was a little brisk. I sat my backpack down and finished the pop I was drinking. Reaching into my pocket I grabbed the last smoke I had. I lit it and took a long drag. I grabbed my backpack and seen I had another pack, cool. I was so deep in thought that I didn't even hear him walk up.

"Excuse me" I looked up and caught my breath, this really cute guy was standing before me. He looked like maybe a skateboarder or something. His clothes fit loose and his hat was turned backwards.

"Yeah, how's it going"?

"Little cold, and it looks like my friends are nowhere to be found. I was wondering if I could bum a smoke off you?"

I reached in my Backpack and threw him the pack; He opened it and then looked at me and smiled.

"Damn dude, but could you like spare me a light too?"

I just laughed and pulled my lighter out of my pocket, and threw it down on the table. He grabbed it, lit his smoke said thanks and left. The way he said Dude reminded me of Brian. He always called me dude.......

"Scott, come on dude we need to get up." I was awakened to the most incredible sight I can ever remember seeing. I know this is what it must be like to die in your sleep. The next thing you see is an Angel before you. I focused my eyes and Brian was sitting on the side of his bed with a towel wrapped around his waist. There were droplets of water on his skin. He obviously had just got out of the shower.

"Morning, what time is it anyways?" My mind was still groggy from sleep.

"Its almost Noon, and my Dad will be home soon."

"Oh, where is your Dad at now?"

"He was away in Bentonville Arkansas, He works for Wal-Mart. Do you have to be home at any certain time?"

Sitting up I kind of looked around, I was getting my bearings back. "Nah, not really. What time does your Mom want me out of here?"

"No rush dude, I do have some homework I have to get done, but I usually put it off till the last moment." Smiling I shook my head.

"Yeah I have some homework too. I graduate this January, no point in screwing up now.

"You boys up and decent?" His Mom knocked on the door and stuck her head in.

"Thanks for waiting Mom, what if we weren't decent?"

"Well I guess then I would have seen some naked butts running for cover. She just laughed and set a pile of clothes down on his desk. I really liked her. She was funny and always seemed to be joking around. I guess now I know where Brian got his sense of humor.

"And if either one of you are expecting Breakfast, Then I suggest you get your butts up and get moving. Then drive to Denny's, cause this kitchen is closed for the day. She turned and walked out of the room. I could hear her laughing as she walked down the steps.

"Man, your Mom is a riot buddy."

"Yeah a real laugh aint she." He smiled at me and got up and asked if I wanted to use the shower. I watched as he passed me and my mind was wondering what was under that towel. I could see his smooth skin, It almost looked like light Brown silk.

His nipples were perfect dimes, and I knew what I wanted for breakfast.

"Well I would, but I don't really have anything clean to change into, maybe I should just get heading home."

"NAH, you don't have to leave. Do you?" He bent over and started pulling on a pair of boxers. He still had his towel around his waist. He let the towel drop just as he was close to having them on. As it dropped I caught a glimpse of his tan line. I almost gasped out loud. For just a brief second, I saw two perfect shaped globes that made up what I believe to be the perfect ass. That confirmed it. He was PERFECT.

"Well I have to at least go home and do my homework. I suppose I can go home and take a quick shower, and do my homework and then call you or something." I watched as he finished getting dressed. He came over and sat down on the bed next to me and put on his socks and shoes. He leaned over and rested his elbows on his knees, and his head upon his hands.

"How much homework do you have to do?"

"Not a lot really, just some Government, and History. Why?" He stood up and smiled at me.

'Well, hang on. Don't move, I want to give you something before you go." He ran out of the room. While he was gone I got up, threw the pillows on the bed and put on my shoes. I was folding the blanket up when he walked back in the room with an envelope. He handed it to me.

"Here, have your Mom sign this and bring it back." I took the envelope, it wasn't sealed and I opened it. Inside was a piece of paper that said.

Report Card

Friendship------A

Best Friend-----A

He has my permission to come back as much as he wants and is always

welcome.

Brian

I didn't know what to say, I just looked at it and I smiled. "Thanks Buddy." He stood there with a smile on his face; it seemed to be from ear to ear.

"Hey, I got an idea. I mean if it's all right with you. Why don't you ride along? You can meet my Mom and Dad, I have a feeling they are going to be seeing a lot of you." That smile of his got even bigger. "Then we can come back here and do our homework, or we can do it together at my place."

"Let me ask my mom."

He ran out the door like he was shot from a cannon. I heard him taking three steps at a time. Then as quick as he left, he came running back in.

"Lets go. I need to leave your number with my mom so she can call if she needs to." He grabbed a piece of paper from his notebook, wrote it down and threw everything in his backpack and we left. I know it just wasn't me; we both seemed to be bouncing around like we were on a sugar rush. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that Brian liked me as much as I liked him. This made me smile.

"What are you smiling about?" I pulled into my driveway and kind of just shook my head. I don't really think I could have described the way I was feeling. At least not without getting mushy.

"No, what. What were you smiling about? Is there something I need to know before I go into your house?" I just started laughing. Brian got this puzzled look on his face.

"No buddy, it has nothing to do with that, O.K.?" I turned my truck off and we were just sitting there. I could tell he was getting paranoid.

"I don't know what to say, I am afraid that you might freak out on me if I told you. I promise its nothing bad, and I will tell you before you go home." Well that seemed to calm him down and we went inside. I made all the introductions and we went upstairs to my bedroom. My room is kind of plain. Nothing special, but I could see Brian looking around. The same way I looked around his room. My room was Baseball, where his room was Hockey. I could see him smiling and kind of shaking his head now and then. Finally after I couldn't take it any longer I had to ask.

"I see you are shaking your head. What, you don't like Baseball?"

"No, its not that, Brent loved Baseball. I know he would have liked you."

"Who's Brent?" Brian looked at me; he seemed to be deep in thought.

"Brent was my Brother." I felt nervous at the mentioning of his Brother. I looked up and seen that Brian was looking off into space with a smirk on his face.

"Well if he was half as great as you are, im sure I would have liked him." Brian sat on the edge of my bed. He kind of crossed his legs and drew his arms up around his chest. He started rocking back and forth real slow. His face broke out in a smile

"I know you would have liked him, and he would have liked you. We had the same taste. His likes and dislikes were the same as mine. So I know he would have. You two would have hit it off right away. I can without a doubt say. He would have LOVED YOU."

After Brian said that he looked away. Almost like he was afraid to look me in the eye. He stared at the floor for a moment, and I broke the silence.

"I think that's the first time I have seen you smile when you mentioned your Brother."

Brian looked up at me. He paused for a second, started to speak and stopped. "Hey I got an idea, Why don't I jump in the shower and get cleaned up, im sure your eyes have to be burning by now. He laughed, turned and looked at me. There was pain in his eyes. I could see he really wanted to talk about it, but couldn't.

"Hey when your ready, you know I will be here."

Those eyes didn't leave me for a second; he just kept staring at me. Finally he broke the silence.

"I believe you. I really do. Now go jump in the shower before anymore fly's start hovering around you." He smiled again. There was no smart-assed grin this time. Just a smile that let me know he was all right. I went to my closet and grabbed all my stuff. I started heading for the door, and stopped. I turned and looked at him one more time. God he really was beautiful. I only hope I can be the friend he needed and deserves.

I set the water nice and hot and jumped in. There was something that kept running through my mind. Something he said. Like a sledgehammer it hit me. Its what he said while we were in my room. Brian said that his Brother and him had the same likes and dislikes. And then he emphasized "Loved You". I leaned back against the shower wall and told myself that I was reading more into this than there was. I knew that I was attracted to Brian. I knew that he made me feel good. I don't think I could say that I was in love with him. I don't know. I have never really been in love before. And defiantly not with a guy, lusted yes, not loved. I finished my shower and got dressed. I walked back in my room and seen Brian was lying back on my bed. There was no movement at all. I walked over and bent down. I thought he might be playing a joke on me. He wasn't, He was asleep. I pulled a blanket from the foot of the bed and covered him up. I stared down at him while he lay there. I couldn't really see him that well last night. The room was too dark. He took my breath away as I watched him sleep. As I stood there I was sure of one thing. God broke the mold after he made this one.

I pulled my Government book out and answered the Chapter review questions and went down and made a couple of sandwiches. Grabbed a couple of drinks and went back upstairs. I walked in the room and set everything down on the dresser. Walking over I sat on the edge of the bed. Still asleep I watched his chest rise and fall. It was almost hypnotic to watch. I could have sat there all day long and watched him sleep. I reached down and brushed the hair back from his face. Caressing the side of his cheek with the back of my hand. He stirred. I pulled my hand back, and he opened his eyes.

"Did I fall asleep?"

I could have thought of a million smart-assed things to say to that comment but I didn't.

"Yeah little buddy you did. If you are Hungry I made us a couple of sandwiches and brought up a couple of cokes?"

"Hell Yes" He threw the blanket off and sat up. The rest of the afternoon we did our homework. Every once on awhile we would have to remind each other that we needed to get it done. We would start talking and stop working. As we lay on the bed next to each other it became obvious to me that we were really close to each other. I could feel the heat of his body. My mind became distracted and I got a raging hard on thinking about him. I wondered what it would be like to be loved by someone so wonderful as him. I imagined all kinds of things. Sometimes they would be sexual. Sometimes just being with him.

"Hello". He nudged me. "You got that smile on your face again. You promised me that you would tell me what you were smiling about earlier. Come on dude I wont freak out. I promise you."

Shit I thought. I forgot I told him that. How was I going to get out of this one? What could I say? I don't know if he feels the same way around me that I do him. I sat there for a second and pondered my answer.

"O.K. But first I need to ask you a question. And you have to answer me as truthful as you can. Deal?" He looked at me not sure what I was gonna ask, I think he was nervous.

"Um.. Sure I guess." I took in a deep breath and thought one more time what I was going to say. I was fiddling with my hands and I know I was squirming around on the bed.

"Is something wrong? Cause if there is tell me. If I made you mad or did something stupid I. I put my finger up to his lips stopping him from saying another word. Brian stared at me. I stared back. I was more scared at that moment than I had been at anytime in my life. Well there was that one time when I threw that Baseball threw Ole Lady Johnson's Window. I shook my head and smiled. Isn't it funny how your mind thinks sometimes? I took a deep breath and looked at him. I pulled my finger back.

"Look Brian, I value your friendship more than anything right now. What I need to know is.. Well." I dropped my head onto my bed and I could feel the tears coming. I went to get up but he stopped me. He grabbed a hold of my arm and wouldn't let me go. I kept my head turned. I was embarrassed and felt stupid. The only thought that kept running through my mind was. < SHUT UP. DON'T SAY A WORD. >

"Scott, just say it, I promise Im here." He kinda chuckled a little an said

"Unless your gonna tell me you're an Axe Murder"

"Look Brian, I think I found the best friend I could ever want to have."

"I see" He paused for a second, "Is it anybody I know" I looked up and he was smiling that patented smart-assed grin of his.

"No, not really."

Now I gave him my smart-assed grin. "I was smiling earlier cause I am happy. O.K. I mean really happy." I looked away for a second, waiting for a reaction.

"Well this is one hell of a twist of fate, your never gonna believe this. I just found one too."

I looked up at him. He was smiling. Trying to be serious I said "Tell me about this new friend of yours."

"Well I know your gonna find this really hard to believe. But I think he's a Genie" I reached down and closed my book. I know I was blushing. At that moment I was on a high that no drug could touch. Brian finished up his homework. After that, we just kicked back on my bed and talked and listened to music. His Mom called and said that it was time for him to come home.

The next few weeks were almost like a routine. Everyday we looked for each other in school. Talked as much as possible and spent every spare minute we had with each other. That included several sleepovers at each other's houses. I went over to his house Saturday around noon. His Mom said that Brian, his brother and Dad had gone to the store and would be back in a few. Why don't I just come in and wait. I went in and assumed my normal position at the kitchen table and waited. Brian's Mom came in and sat down.

"Scott, Can I talk to you for a second?"

"Sure, There's nothing wrong is there?" The look on her face was as serious as I had ever seen. I really thought I was in trouble or something had happened. I was starting to get concerned when she reached across the table and grabbed my hand.

"No honey, there's nothing wrong. I can see that you and Brian are becoming very close and there are some things I want to talk about."

Oh shit, could she see that I looked at her son in a way that might not be acceptable? Was her Motherly instinct telling her that I was starting to have feelings for him?

"Has Brian ever talked about his Brother to you?" I could see that this conversation wasn't easy for her so I squeezed her hand.

"Well a little, I just don't bring it up. I know he doesn't like to talk about it, so I just don't ask a lot of questions."

"These last couple of weeks I have seen my son happy again for the first time in a year. Next week is the anniversary of Brent's death. Things are likely to get a little touchy, so I thought I would let you know."

"Can I ask you about Brent?"

She smiled, and got a far off look on her face. She was thinking, and I could see that she had some fond memories in her mind. She nodded her head.

"Well I suppose you want to know what happened to him?" I shook my head yes and just listened. The smile got wider as I could see she was thinking of him. " Brent was just like Brian. I Miss my boy, but everyday I still see him when I look at Brian. Brent loved Baseball. Brian loved Hockey. Brent would go out and play Hockey, just so Brian would play Ball with him. It was a trade off you see?" She got up and walked to the kitchen counter and poured herself another cup of coffee. She asked me if I wanted anything and I just shook my head No.

"Are you familiar with Links Pond?"

"Yeah I have been there a couple of times fishing and stuff."

"Well they were over playing hockey last year." She got very still and stopped talking. It looked like she was loosing the color in her face. Her normal rose complexion had turned pale. The whole house was quiet. It was eerie, and so tense.

"Brent fell through the ice, Brian tried to save him but couldn't. Brian blames himself for Brent's death." She took another sip of her coffee and looked up trying to put on a strong face. "That has a lot to do with why he is a lifeguard. We sent him to a therapist for a while, and She thought that it would help him work past this." She shook here head. "I myself don't agree." I could tell by the look on her face, she wasn't happy.

"So far it seems to be O.K. Until recently, Brian has had Nightmares." She paused for a second took a sip of her coffee. "And that mister is all thanks to you I think. Since you two hoodlums have been hanging so tight lately, he hasn't had anymore really bad ones."

I didn't know what to say. I kind of sat there speechless and dazed.

"Well Brian never would talk about this, and I won't mention it till he's ready to talk. I think in his own time he will bring it up."

"He will, I know he will. I have this feeling that he really likes you a lot. I see him look at you the same way he looked at his Brother. I know he loved his Brother more than anything. I have a feeling that in a macho guy type of way that he loves you too." She kinda chuckled a little, "If guys would just put the Testosterone away for five minutes you would all be better off" Once again she was laughing. She wiped her nose with a tissue, and once again put on the strong face.

The garage door opened up and we could hear the car pulling in the drive.

"Did Brian mention that his birthday was in a couple of weeks?"

"No, the Turkey never mentioned it."

"Well we are not gonna do anything real special, we would love to have you here."

"Thanks, I would like that very much. What day is it anyways?"

"Lets see", she paused for a second. It will be in less than two weeks. Its on Friday, two weeks from yesterday." Hmm, that gives me a little time to think of something. The door to the house opened and in walked the gang. Brian motioned me upstairs and I followed. We walked into his room and he shut the door.

"Sorry dude, didn't know I was gonna get dragged off this morning. Had to go get my haircut. I reached up and took off the Boston Bruins ball cap he was wearing.

"Looks good, did you fall asleep in the chair" I kind of snickered a little.

"Ha, ha. Very funny, so what are we doing today? I need to get out of here."

"Its up to you buddy, whatever you want to do. Want to go see a movie or something?" He ran downstairs to grab the paper to see what was playing. He came bounding up the stairs as usual, taking three steps at a time.

"Hey, I got a better idea, lets see if we can go up to our cottage. It's only about an hour and a half from here. We can go up there and just chill out and have fun. What do you say?"

"If that's what you want to do, sounds fun to me"

"Come on man, go downstairs with me while I ask my parents if we can. If you're with me, I think they will say yes." We walked downstairs and with a little begging on his part and some reassuring on mine, they said yes. He went upstairs and packed while I got details from his dad on how to turn the heat on. I was told to stop by the store and pick up water. He had the pipes drained and it was too big of an ordeal to drain them again. If you don't drain them, he said they would freeze.

We said our goodbyes. His Mom handed him the cell phone and we left. We stopped by my house, got my stuff and headed north. It was a great fall afternoon for the drive. Most of the leaves had already fallen, but it was very picturesque. We stopped at a Wal-Mart on the way and loaded up with some supplies. We got there just before the sun set. I turned the gas on, then the heat. Brian ran around getting things situated. What a view. We stood on the back deck that overlooked the lake. You could see for miles. I turned and looked at Brian. He was off in some distant place. At that moment I couldn't think of any other place I wanted to be. The sun was setting. The colors of a late fall sunset were shining in his hair. I noticed again, for the first time. How truly beautiful he really was. My chest became tight. My mouth went dry. I was nervous and giddy at the same time. The thought of being with him made me happy. Not just tonight, but forever.....

You really could just sit there and stare out across Lake Michigan and see for miles. Its sheer size seemed overpowering. Like life I guess, sometimes it's overpowering. No matter how hard you try, you can never see the distant shoreline. The sound of Gulls in the air made me realize where I was. I had been drifting back and forth. I stood and stretched. I think it might be time to get something to eat. I glanced at my watch and seen that it wasn't even Noon yet. I was still hungry though. I passed a small store on the way down here. So I left to get something to eat. The gulls, or at least they looked like Gulls, were landing and grabbing bits of food off of the sidewalk. In a way they reminded me of the Raven, or at least mine. Swooping down grabbing something and then flying away with it. Where did he take it? Would he ever bring it back? I kept walking; I had to just keep walking. Thoughts kept running through my mind. Some of them came so fast it was hard to make sense of them all. So I kept walking.

Thanks for reading.
