Corner Life

Being stuck in a world all by yourself was never fun. At least that's what Alex thought every day of school. Sitting in her corner she studied for her next test and completed homework assignments diligently. For once, Alex thought, could she possibly be a part of the world in front of her instead of watching it from the distant corner where she found her security every day. It seemed very doubtful.

Every day she sits there in that corner not speaking to a soul. She hides her face in her text book or by her long curly coffee brown hair. I wonder what her voice sounds like. Must be melodious or quiet, either way it would be very lovely to hear.

"Jenny?"

"Huh?"

"Stop zoning and quiz me. I can't fail another quiz in science!"

"Oh, alright Karen."

Someday, I'll speak to that girl and we'll be together forever.

The bell, already? I never had the chance to finish writing the third paragraph to my essay for next week. Shit. Have to stuff fast! Only three minutes to get to Global. Run! Phew made it.

Alex sat in her seat very quietly as the bell rang. She laid out her text book and notes from yesterday on her desk and took out a pencil. Another boring day of notes was all she could think about. Then she looked around the classroom and noticed a girl looking at her which made her blush a little in confusion.

Was she looking at me?

"If you all would be so kind as to take out your note packets so we may get started."

Who is this girl? She's kind of cute with her hair cut like that. Focus! Notes! Oh no, she's looking at me again. What do I do? Do I wave or just act like I didn't notice.

"Alex, would you like to share with the class the answer to the question I just asked?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, what was the question?"

"What does the word Renaissance mean?"

"Rebirth ma'am"

"Thank you. Now class, as you all know this was a rebirth of classical learning." She's giggling. Is she giggling at me? Please let this class end soon I want to get out! Shit, still have a half hour. Notes! Notes! Notes! She won't stop looking at me. What's with this girl... What's her name... She's not looking anymore. Thank goodness. She's writing notes and not paying attention to me. Finally, I can relax.

Alex did relax for the most of class but then to her surprise a note appeared on her desk. She looked at it quizzically and opened it. The note was written in such pretty handwriting.

"Dear Alex, I want to join you in your corner on Monday during lunch, would that be okay?"

Alex panicked for a moment and then the bell rang. She gathered her books quickly and practically ran out of Global History. Lucky enough it was the last period of the day.

Jenny was in more of a state of confusion and panic than Alex was. She passed her note in hope of a response but she just ran out of class as soon as the bell rang. Was she upset by the letter? Did she hate her? Damn it, she knew she shouldn't have written that note. Fuck.

Walking towards her locker to grab her stuff and head home Karen came up to her locker.

"Wanna walk home with me?"

"Sure Karen."

"You seem out of it what's up?" Karen said while leaning closer into her best friend.

"It's nothing. I'm just glad it's Friday."

"You and me both girl!"

Jenny slammed her locker shut and twisted the combination dial. "Alright, let's head out of here, I'm starving!"

"Oh! Can we eat at your house. Your mom always has the best food."

"As if we'd eat somewhere else." Jenny and Karen walked to her house chatting about the usual topics. Karen and her boyfriend were rapidly approaching third base and she was unsure of how to handle it. Jenny always responded if she was uncomfortable she shouldn't do it. Karen had a habit of responding with that not being any fun. She hoped Karen and her boyfriend weren't going to go too far, they were all still so young to even be thinking like that. And judging everything by how fun it is wasn't exactly the best way to make decisions.

When Karen started rambling again Jenny's mind drifted towards Alex. Her curly hair and green eyes went so well with her milky white skin tone. Jenny loved it when she wore her hair in two braids split down the middle and wrapped around her shoulders resting on her chest. Alex always looked great in her school uniform without anything ever out of place. Her skirt at the perfect length, socks up to the knees, and her blouse and sweater vest all neat. Jenny could never get enough of gazing at Alex. Then her thoughts shifted towards the note she gave to her. Should she give her another note? Mulling it around in her brain for a minute she settled on writing her another note, a better note, and would give it to her first thing Monday morning in Science class. It seemed like a good idea to look kind of nice too in order to help the note some, Jenny needed all the help she could get.

At this point Karen had stopped talking and was just looking at Jenny. It seemed ridiculous how off in space Jenny was. She knew something had to be going on.

While poking Jenny, Karen said very loudly, "Hellooooooo, Jenny." She then waved her hand in front of Jenny's face. "Are you alive in there?"

"Woh, yeah. Sorry, just spaced"

"Sure. What's on your mind?

"Nothing at all," Jenny said this with a blank expression. She hated lying to her best friend but Karen would never understand. Since Jenny went to a Catholic school all of her friends and family were hardcore religious. She just wouldn't get it and Jenny didn't want to mess up her friendship with her over this crush or lust she had for Alex. If it didn't work out at all, she could just pretend as if nothing happened. At least that was the idea.

The girls walked in the door and instantly Karen ran to the refrigerator.

"Food!" That was all Karen could think about. It was tacos for lunch at school and she wasn't a fan. Surveying the refrigerator she found tuna macaroni salad and fruit salad.

"Yum!"

"Hey, save some for me!" That was all Jenny could get out before she had to run to the bathroom. She was so busy thinking about Alex she forget about how bad she needed to use the bathroom until they walked through the door. Jenny darted up the stairs while tearing at her button and zipper she started pulling her pants down while closing the bathroom door.

Meanwhile, Karen was loading the salads into separate bowls for herself and poured some coke. Once all her food was arranged she popped the T.V. on and flipped the stations until she settled on MTV.

"Wow I was so spacey I forgot how bad I needed to pee." Jenny said while walking down the stairs.

"Look Hillary Duff is on. She's such a slut! Look at the plastic surgery and she so skinny it makes me sick."

"Put something decent on Karen."

"Are you kidding me? I have been waiting for my song to make it to # 1 spot and I think today is my lucky day"

"Sure sweetie."

Jenny made a small bowl of fruit salad and went upstairs. If she knew Karen well she'd be at the T.V. for another hour or so. Jenny hoped Karen wasn't intending on spending the night because Jenny needed time to plan and write her note for Alex. Then again maybe she needed Karen to help her from going insane thinking about Alex.

Alex left the school in such a hurry she didn't even stop at her locker. Lucky enough there wasn't homework for the weekend. She couldn't believe what had just happened.

That girl! There was just something about her that made her think. Her eyes were pretty and her blonde hair curled in a cute way. Why am I thinking about her like this? Why would she want to sit with me? I can't believe we'd have anything in common. When would I do my work? What would we talk about? Would we talk? I...I don't even know her name.

All these thoughts were passing through Alex's head so fast she was driving herself into a panic. When she finally arrived home all she could hear were screams. Screams of her mother and father fighting again. Nevertheless this was continuous and never ending. They always found something to fight about no matter the stupidity of the argument. Alex used her studying and school work as a tool to escape the agony. She opened and closed the door quietly so no one would hear. Then she tip-toed her way into her room and finally took a breath. She made it and no one noticed. She dropped her bag and books in the corner of her room and flopped herself on her twin sized bed. Turning up the music on her CD player she drowned out the screaming and fell into a deep sleep. She was too exhausted for anything else.

Her dreams were of her last girlfriend. They went for a walk in the park and talked about nothing in particular. It was as if she went back in time with the wonderful person who showed her life. Then in a flash she was back to that horrid day when her girlfriend told her of the news of her moving. That she'd never be back. That she thought it to be best they broke up. It was clear to Alex that her girlfriend didn't even want her in her new life. She took every word in stride until the phone went dead. She fell back into a world where she was all alone.

This is a revised version of the original. Just a few changes to make it flow better and easier to read. Feel free to e-mail me with critiques and I will continue to revise the other chapters and hopefully continue the story since I never finished it! Thanks so much! Animemoonart@yahoo.com
