Chapter 5 -- Todd re-visited
`Master, you were looking for me.'
I had had Todd, the American slave and former lorry driver, called to my study which doubled as an office just off the veranda.
Todd had been the ringleader of a semi-rebellion at Farouq al-Hamdi's opal mine, until I had retrained him and had then bought him and this three rebellion colleagues. Since then he had been working for Yuriy, the stables overseer, in the fields and I had heard no negative report on him. `Farm manager' would have been Yuriy's more modern title, but we ran with the old Dahran one, and because of his hard work Todd was really an assistant to Yuriy, but he had the capability of being a lot more.
Yuriy said that Todd worked consistently quite well, and Rolf who was in charge of the gym, said he never missed a training and swim session. Aziz really had no contact with him and his only record showed that he had been broken and then had a verucca removed.
Todd came in and made obeisance and then went to `display.' He looked in superb form. His compact body was deeply and evenly tanned all over.
`How are you, Todd? You look great. At rest, please.'
Whether it was the comment about his physique or the please' attached to the order to go to rest', but he appeared less of the macho aggressive type than he had been.
`Fine, Boss.'
`How is your foot?'
He looked puzzled.
`The removal of the verruca?'
`Oh, fine, Boss, no problem at all.'
`I'm hearing good reports about you. Is that a hint of a blush I see creep in there, Todd? You never miss a session at the pool or in gym training.'
`Thanks, Boss.'
I motioned him closer and gently cupped his balls. He blinked twice, but made no effort to move away.
`Do you know what you would have said six months ago had I done that?'
`Fuck you' was the quick reply.
`Yes. You are the only one to have been consistent in telling me to fuck off, and sounding as if you really meant it. But not now?'
He had a bit of a lop-sided grin as he said `No, Boss, not now. You have your own agenda, a bit strange, I must say, but at the same time respectful in a way of each of us.'
`Of us?'
`Of your slaves, Boss.'
`I have a new job for you, that is if you want it. Are the fields a bit boring?'
`The fields, Boss? No, not boring, kinda nice. I'm with a good team--mainly Swedes and we get on kinda well together. But if you have a new job, I'm kinda of at a loose end at the moment. No pressing engagements so to speak.'
Now he was grinning widely.
`We have a new doctor who is going to be living at the Aloe Palace. He is in fact the man who operated on your foot at the hospital. I need someone to look after him for the time being, do his messages and keep things right for him. Anything he wants to you to do.'
`Night-time as well, Boss?' he asked softly.
`No, Todd, I don't really think so. I think he wants the quiet life in that regard. But if he expresses an interest do what he wants but also tell me and I will get someone who might really interest him. How are you and Raoul getting on?'
This time he did blush.
`You don't have to say, if you don't want to.'
`We...he...We are gentle with each other now. At the opal mine, I used fuck him like a knot in a piece of wood, but now we know each other's bodies and he tells me how to make love to him. And....and I also let him fuck me when he needs to.'
Todd was looking at the ground at this point.
`Todd, do not ever be ashamed of love in any of its forms. I saw how he looked after you at the swimming pool that time. He cares for you, I do think.'
Todd grinned at the memory of his foolishness and opposition to being trained, but he said seriously, `Yes, Boss, that he does. So when do you want me to start with the doctor.'
Tomorrow morning. Tell Yuriy and Aziz tonight of your re-assignment. One last thing, Todd, are you happy here? And please don't say fuck you.''
Todd went serious for a moment and said, Yes, Boss. I am happy. For the first time in my life I am content in a way I cannot yet describe. In another way, I miss my former life in the US. And although I may yet say the odd fuck you' to you, Boss, I've never really said `thank you' for getting me and the others out of the opal mine.'
Todd, you still have a capacity to surprise me. A thank you' from Todd Allen is one for the history books of the Aloe Palace. Maybe I can return the favour for the `thank you', for your politeness.'
I leant back in the chair and wondered should I do it or not. Todd had not understood what I was talking about, nor indeed could he have understood and it showed in his face.
`Sit down, Todd,' I said indicating a chair.
Slaves do not sit down in the presence of a Master. He sat down on the edge of the chair, not accustomed to having sat in one for various years either at the opal mine or lately here at the Aloe Palace. He looked ill at ease.
I finally got up and went over to the large safe at the side of the office, twisted the two dials and rummaging among the files, I took out one.
`You know, Todd, that I have never had anything to do with slaves being brought to the Sheikdom of Dahra. Those I have, have either been given to me as gifts, twenty seven to be precise, the others of you I have purchased to run the Palace as I cannot have both servants and slaves here.'
I was rambling, but I still did not want to give him the folder, yet I did want him to see it in a way.
`I had a report commissioned on your family to see that they were ok. They are. Your wife, Rose, still lives at your old house and won't move from there. Do you remember a Rainbow Cafe out near the highway?'
Todd's eyes were so wide open the whites seemed larger than usual. He nodded dumbly, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down in his throat.
Rose now owns it. It's called T&R's' -- Todd's and Rose's. It got `The best diner in the State award' last year. She has a staff of twelve.'
Tears were now flowing down Todd's face. His eyes were totally red.
`You now have three boys, Stevie, Tommy and Toddie who is just five. You did not know that Rose was expecting again the last time you left?'
Todd shook his head mesmerised, as he wiped tears away with the back of his hands.
`Here's the full report. Read it now and then it goes back in the safe.'
I poured myself and Todd a glass of water each, as he opened the dossier marked `Todd Allen' and I went and sat by the window while he read it.
For thirty or so minutes there was nothing but the sound of his sobs and of his tears being wiped away as he read and re-read of the family he would never see again. When I came back over from the window, he had the file open at the pages of photographs, one of his three boys on bikes and a tricycle outside his house, and the other of his wife in the diner, under a large blown-up photo of himself under which were three words -- `Missing in Action.'
I took the file, closed it and returned it to the safe.
Boss,' he said quietly, I don't understand. How did....? How did this all happen? You say Rose....? The kids look so well... I don't understand.'
`From what we have found out, some investors decided to enlarge the Rainbow Cafe and hired Rose as the manager there. After it was up and running under the new management, that was about the time Toddie was born, the owners decided on a new business plan which did not involve restaurants and sold it to Rose as a going concern for a nominal amount. It was a simple as that.'
Boss, I may have just been a truck driver back in the US, but even I am not that dumb. You were the so-called investors.' Weren't you? You bought the place for Rose and the kids. Didn't you?'
`I never thought you dumb, Todd. Quite the contrary! You are one cute and tough cookie in more ways than one. But if you ever let that out I have helped your family, I will deny it. It would not do my reputation as a retrainer any good at all, would it? You also know that you can never return to the US. That is just not my say so. It is the way things are at present between very strange and warped governments.'
`Why did you do this for me, Boss? Why?'
Very simple, Todd, you are the only one around here to tell me on three different occasions to fuck off' and really mean it. You seemed to be fighting a fight not just for yourself, but also for others. The same at the opal mine. You fucked each of the other three miner slaves, but at the same time you were fighting for them. You do realise, Todd, that there are some battles in this life that we can win, but there are many others that we can't. Wisdom is knowing the difference. Now what about his new job?'
I'm your man, Boss. And Boss.... Boss, I'd like to take back a couple of those fuck yous' if I could.
`Todd, I do believe that finally you have learned to kiss ass.'
He looked at me, and I at him, and we both started to laugh at the absurdities of life and the whims of Fate, which toss around the living like dice on the tables of chance.
Todd Allen slid off the edge of the chair. For some reason he now had a sizeable boner. Normally, a slave will kiss a Master's feet, but Todd never managed to get that far, he just put his forehead on my knees and cried for over five minutes, an outpouring of loss but also relief for the safety of his family.
`What do you say, Todd, if we both look after the family from here? I'll have the report updated every year to see how they are getting on.'
Todd in time became one of my best overseers and each year, I had Josh Green in the Grand Cayman get an update on the commissioned report. I never told Todd that of my first fifty or so slaves, his was only one of four families who never gave hope of seeing him again. That news I thought would have been too dangerous to give him.

Chapter 6 -- Deckams
The Bank where I work and of which I am a partner -- we use the old style name rather than that of `director' -- is in the financial square mile of London town. No mean Bank, no mean City. Once a month on the third Monday, we, the partners, assemble quite literally from all four corners of the world, having filed our personal branch reports in advance and having received all of up to forty, albeit one page each, reports from each of the other branches, and from the various departments of our headquarters.
London in June is beautiful and for the first time in all the years that I can remember; all the partners were around the Boardroom table. Maybe it was the month, maybe the promise of good weather, maybe the monarch's official birthday celebrations, I don't know, but world of Deckams assembled at ten, not to be disturbed until midday, when we would proceed to the ritual of drinks and lunch in the private dining-room.
I had my homework' up to date while flying in on the New Concorde, that week flying from Bahrain, having shuttled in by Lear from Dahra. Normally, my report reading homework' was done each morning as I was driven in to the Bank. After 11 years of being on the Board, you get a feel for things and forty pages of facts and figures either fit or do not fit.
By the looks of it, we were in for a bumper year. Tommy Elford was in from Tokyo, which had bucked all trends and returned extremely good results on some very fine investments.
Colin Bowman, the youngest partner from Rio de Janeiro, was all business trying to look impressive over and above his twenty seven years of age and at the same time trying to hide the nervousness of his first meeting. I tried imagining just how his tight young body would be under me, and then had to put the thought out of my mind due to an incipient and burgeoning painful erection. We ended up sitting beside each other. I could not help but notice that he had a list of five points on a pad, which he obviously wished to make.
`First meeting, eh Colin?'
He had the build of a well exercised athlete and under his well fitting clothes, I would have bet that he was a really well hung young man.
`Yes, Sir Jonathan,' he knew my name.
`A word to the wise?'
`Yes, Sir Jonathan?'
`Not a word. Not a single word.'
`At the Board meeting, Sir Jonathan?' he was polite if anything.
In one, Colin. In one. If anyone asks about Rio, you reply we are working very hard at present', but offer nothing further.'
He looked at me and then he nodded and said `Yes, Sir Jonathan', and deliberately drew a line through the five or so points on his aide-memoire.
I gave him a big wink of approval and I thought I saw him arrange a large boner in his trousers. There are those who get excited when seeing nudity, and there are those who get sexually excited in the presence of power such as was being wielded in the Boardroom of Deckhams that morning. I have even seen junior staff, in my time, get a wet spot on their trousers during a good dressing down for carelessness.
Charlie Deckam chaired the meeting with his usual elan. There was a lot about offshore accounts, difficulties in the European bond market and the new recruitment drive.
Out of the blue Charlie asked the Chicago partner how things were going on a deal which was taking ages to clinch and got a reply that rambled for over three minutes on percentage points and small deposits until Charlie coughed and cut him off.
`And how is Rio doing?'
On cue, Colin piped up `Mr. Chairman, we are working very hard at present.'
It was not just the branch's work that was hard. Colin Bowman had a hard-on brought about by being the centre of attention of the Board, by the excitement of being at this centre of power in banking and I could see from my laid back angle as I sat beside him, how his flies were being stretched to the limit.
Before he could say another word, Charlie smacked the Boardroom table with his hand and was back in with That, ladies and gentlemen, is what Deckams is all about as our youngest partner so rightly says working very hard at present.''
The Board positively beamed at Rio's brevity after Chicago's ramble through the forests of percentages.
I even reached over and patted young Colin on the shoulder, who looked as if he had just personally put the country back on the gold standard. I could see his boner definitely stretching his pants to their limit.
As the meeting broke up soon after, Colin from Rio said, `Sir Jonathan, how did you know that?'
`Know what?'
`Know that he was going to ask me about Rio?'
`Colin, Charlie Deckam, if anything, is consistent and in the past eleven years, he always, always, asks the youngest partner at his first meeting how his branch is going. You should always recall that this Bank is built on layer upon layer of tradition.'
With that, the man of whom we were speaking came over, though always referred to at our Board meetings as `Mr. Chairman', he was the holder of one of the kingdom's oldest dukedoms going back to William the Conqueror and the Deschamps of Normandy, and baron of a number of equally ancient and older holdings.
At sixty, Charlie Deckam, was the picture of health and prosperity, a confidant of presidents, kings and ministers, and a very humble and down to earth man.
`Ah, Jonathan and young Colin. Jonathan, I have something to ask you, or rather of you, if you have a moment.'
I looked at Colin, our youngest partner, and then at Charlie, `Is this a secret to which a young partner can be privy?'
Charlie smiled `A young partner who is wise enough to say that everyone is working hard in Rio. I suppose so, Jonathan. Deputy Chairman? Are you interested? Derek wants to retire in July.'
Charlie, you honour me, but a clear and definite no.' I am committed totally to Dahra for the foreseeable future. You have a lot of other possibles.'
That's what I thought you would say, Jonathan. Dahra continues to be too interesting for you. Over half a trillion euro in just over a year in the Dahra accounts. And you will notice, Colin,' Charlie said, that Jonathan did not have a single point on his aide-memoire. But I'm sure that at our July meeting you will summarise for us the five points you had ready for today.'
Colin just opened and closed his mouth like a landed fish as Charlie Deckam walked away.
You see, my dear Colin,' I said, all the Deckams can read upside down since their ancestor did so at a meeting of one of Napoleon's generals and made a subsequent financial killing on the result of the Battle of Jena.'
Colin was not really listening to what I was saying but said `Sir Jonathan, he offered you Deputy Chairman.'
`Yes, out of politeness, knowing that I would turn it down. Charlie is the essence of old fashioned courtesy.'
`Dahra is the crown jewel of Deckams at present, Sir Jonathan. You don't need a junior partner there by any chance?'
`No, Colin, don't worry you'll rise to the top far quicker than you will want. And if you ever ended up in my position in Dahra, you would never want to leave. But you have all of Brazil at your fingertips.'
`And less than seven per cent of your deposits.'
`Do you want some more funds to invest if you had them to hand, Colin?'
`You would trust me with them?'
`I trust anyone who takes my advice and knows what to speak and what not to, Colin. Any time you need in excess of a billion euro for something into which you had put your own salary, just let me know.'
`You mean that, Sir Jonathan?'
`A Deckam partner never jokes about a client's money, Colin, never. But as I said, only if you would put your own salary into it. So tell me, what do you like most about Rio? The food, the lifestyle, the ladies, what?'
`I love everything about it. It is only my second posting overseas after Mexico City. I was here in London in financial planning for three years.'
Ouch!' I said, just one step away from Bank audits where I started.'
He laughed at that and then said, `Just to keep the record straight, if you will excuse the pun, but I'm not into ladies. I have a Brazilian partner. His name is Carlos.'
`That, Colin, is very kind of you to say and to take me into your confidence. In Dahra, I have someone very special, but you would have to visit me there for me to be able to explain it properly to you. I would not want to shock a lad of your tender years.'
We both laughed and worked our way up the stairs to pre-prandial drinks and lunch. As we went up, one of the porters caught up with me and gave me my poste restante at the Bank, non-urgent items which were held pending my arrival in London. I just put them in my pocket.
In the afternoon, I visited Taspells, the jewellers, and bought a further batch of the gold loop necklaces that I had previously ordered. On an impulse, I bought two gold pen sets, the type that sit on a desk with a fountain pen on one side and a biro or pencil on the other. There was a small but beautiful horse in the middle at full gallop. At fifteen thousand euro each, they were expensive but well worth what I had in mind, if and when required.
I had the jewellers send me to the hotel twenty gold pens of a new style, which was all the rage. I thought at they would do nicely for my twenty neighbours who purchase water from me at the Lime Palace. At a thousand a go, they were a good long-term investment.
Three other companion sets of biro and pencil in silver I bought for Hal, Yves and Cal, the medical team so to speak. It is always good to keep the servants on one's good side.
