Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 48: Messages by Tripp Savidge
- Scene 1 *
Skye, I think we need to assume Valters is going to be a problem, River spoke into Skye's mind as they stepped out of the meeting hall.
Skye glanced up to see Arnakkhor speaking with a few of the elders. He could see Chaz and Corbin in the distance walking back to the portal.
Mistral and I agree. Skye turned to catch River's eye.
So then, what are we going to do about it? Want me to talk with Mica?
I thought I should speak with Arnakkhor first. Maybe as soon as he's done with the elders. We also need to get his brother to Underhill.
Garrett and Nik had moved off to the side and seemed to be in discussion while Bryan and Mica stood protectively near River and Skye. When Arnak was done with his conversation, he turned back to them.
"Prince Skye, may I speak with you a moment?" Arnak called out.
They moved over to Arnak with the others creating a circle around Skye and the fae king.
"Your Majesty," Skye greeted.
"Please, just Arnak. I'd like to start evacuating as soon as possible. I'll have my men start organizing, and we can send those who are most vulnerable through first thing in the morning."
"May we take your brother through tonight? I'd rather not wait," Skye said.
"Yes, please. If I can convince them to go, I want Allanna and Jhaeros to go through with the first group. We have to assume there will be more attacks, and I'll think more clearly if I know they're safe."
"Of course. There's no good way to say this. We have serious concerns about Valters. I expect him to cause trouble or get in the way. We can't afford any setbacks."
Arnak sighed, and his expression said what his words didn't. "I agree."
"Do you have a way to contain him?"
"I can place him under guard. I have a few men who I know are loyal and will understand."
"We'll leave it to you, but please understand that if he interferes, I will use whatever means necessary to stop him."
"Understood."
Skye felt bad about the situation, but he was relieved it wasn't a battle with Arnakkhor to get him on board.
"We also need to get word to the other fae and figure out how to evacuate them as well." Skye glanced at River to see if his brother was still paying attention.
"That is a challenge. I usually send messages by runner, but it will take time, and with the added dangers we'll have no way to know if they even make it."
Skye, we could fly them. Not all at once, but if we took turns and got to those the farthest away first, it would give them time to travel here. River glanced over at Mica and the others since he'd broadcast to the group.
I agree, Skye. But I'd want at least two of us, preferably two dragons on each run, Mica sent.
Skye nodded to Mica and turned back to Arnak.
"We can work it out tomorrow. My priority is to get your brother to safety, and you need to organize your people and contain Valters. We want to evacuate as many people as we can quickly. I'll talk to my team about setting up a perimeter and patrols so we're not surprised by the beetles again."
"Thank you, Prince Skye."
"We're not being formal, remember? It's just Skye."
Arnakkhor smiled and left to regroup with the elders.
You think he'll do it? Mica asked.
If he doesn't, give the wing permission to block or restrain Valters. Make sure Bram, Noud, and Raph know as well. Skye glanced at River and saw his scowl.
You can do what you need to, River. We don't have time to mess around. Skye saw his brother's eyebrow raise, and the scowl morphed into a smirk.
Who are you? And what the fuck did you do with my brother? River's mind voice sounded aghast, but the expression made it clear he got it. Wait...fuck, you feel that?
Skye did and braced himself against the urge to flee. He spread his legs to get a firm stance just before the ground began to shake. It only lasted a minute, but it was still unnerving.
Okay. Anyone else noticing it's happening more often? Skye asked.
Yeah, River agreed.
I'd like to set up camp near the portal if that's okay? It's a nice open area with nothing that's likely to fall on us, Mica said.
You planning on us sleeping in dragon form? Skye asked.
There was a long pause before Mica answered. Even if they sent tents with the other supplies, I think it would be safer. I don't want to be in one and get trapped with another tremor. We also don't have much time before nightfall.
I agree, Skye, River said, and Skye could feel his brother's concern for him and Nik. He wasn't sure where the protective streak came from, but it was rather comforting.
It also lets us better protect the non-dragons with us, Garrett added.
I'm sold. What did you think about setting up some sort of surveillance or perimeter to alert us if more bugs are coming?
Let's ask Jayce and Teak if they sent anything in all those crates. Otherwise, we'll be flying patrols, Mica added.
Skye thought it sounded reasonable. While they'd been using telepathy, they hadn't tried to include the others who weren't with them. They'd learned in some of the practice maneuvers that there was the possibility of too much information, and hearing conversations that didn't apply to you could be distracting at the wrong time.
When they neared the portal, or rather the place where the gateway would be, Skye looked for Arnak's brother Kazemkhor. He spotted him a moment later with Jayce.
"How's he doing?" Skye was glad to have Jayce with them. Jayce was also on the medical track but had more field experience and training than Skye.
'He doesn't have our powers,' Mistral reminded him.
True. But I have a lot to learn, Skye thought to his dragon.
"He's stable. Whoever patched him up performed a miracle." Jayce glanced up with question in his eyes.
"I used a bit of my magic. The cuts were pretty deep."
"Uh-huh, and you still don't think you're a healer? I know there aren't many dragons with that gift, but I'm not sure what else you'd call it."
"I'm still not convinced I have healing powers... it's more like applying my telekinesis in a particular way." Skye knelt beside Kazemkhor and opened his other sight. He wanted to make sure they hadn't missed anything.
Jayce rolled his eyes. "Anyway, whatever you need to tell yourself. I agree we should get him to Underhill. How do you want to do this?"
"I think it will take two people to carry him safely. I better check in with Mica," Skye said, getting to his feet.
"Mica is right here," Mica said from behind him.
"Did you hear?"
"I'd suggest Jayce and either Bram or Noud. Underhill allowed them to pass through once, and if for some reason they can't come back, then we're still covered."
"But Jayce is the only one who knows what's in the crates," Skye said. "Also, if we have any more injuries, he's the only other one with anything beyond field medic training."
"Shit. That's a good point; then we'll send Bryan. Do you want to call him over?" Mica asked.
Bryan! Can you help us over here? And bring Bram with you, Skye mentally sent to his wing-mate.
On my way, Bryan responded.
Moments later, Bryan and the strawberry-blond elf showed up, which was only discernable since he wasn't wearing the combat helmet. The rest of the elf guard was still covered in Imperial armor.
"We'd like you to carry Kazemkhor through to Underhill. Once you're there, let Venci know that he needs a healer. I'm sure they've set up a way for him to communicate with the others by now. Once the night elf is being cared for, please return," Skye said.
"Got it. Anything else you want us to communicate?" Bryan asked.
"Let Venci know this guy is important and that we'll be sending more elves through soon. You've heard what the plans are, so answer what you can if there are questions," Skye said.
"Yes, sir. We'll take good care of him," Bram said as he knelt to lift the elf. Bryan carefully lifted Kazemkhor's feet.
"I'll open the gateway," Skye said as he walked the short distance to where the stones marked the threshold. He closed his eyes and pulled his magic. The distinctive hum started immediately, and Skye willed the portal to open to the time and place Jayce and company had recently passed through.
When Skye opened his eyes, the glowing portal was ready. He stepped back and tried not to hold his breath as Bram and Bryan carried the night elf through. Seconds after they had passed, the portal dimmed and closed.
"They'll be back," Garrett's deep voice said.
"I didn't realize you were nearby."
"Babe, I'm not letting you out of my sight. You're worrying, aren't you?"
"Yes. What if something happens or Underhill doesn't allow them to return?"
"Then we'll deal with it. We have bigger problems here and now. I was talking with Teak, and he thinks there is a booster in all that stuff they brought that will let us use or comms. No guarantee on distance, but it might still help. Given what we saw flying back, we have to assume there will be more attacks."
"Let's ask Jayce if there was anything that might help in what they sent over," Skye suggested. They'd barely moved when Raphael almost ran into them.
"Did you send Bryan away?" Raph asked with a panicked edge in his voice.
"No, he and Bram took the injured night elf back to Underhill, they're coming back. Why? Is there a problem?" Skye asked.
Raph visibly relaxed. "Um... no, just asking." He turned to walk away, and Skye and Garrett both burst out laughing.
That was... shit, I don't even know, Garrett sent to Skye.
I told you I got him hooked on dragon dick. I wasn't planning for it to be exclusively Bryan's, but we can work on that.
Maybe let Bryan work out some of his frustration with Kuai first? Garrett suggested.
Yeah, what is it with those two? Even after trying to decipher their thoughts, I'm confused. Skye realized they'd reached Jayce, who was helping Teak with something.
"Teak, what are you guys doing?" Skye asked.
"I need to start work on the beacon. I'm trying to make as much use of daylight as I can. The crate was designed to drop away since it is too big for me to lift, but I'm having trouble getting the pins out that hold it together. And it takes two people because the other has to hold the panel in place until the pin is completely out."
"May I help?"
Teak looked up and rolled his eyes. "Thanks, I prefer to just struggle for hours." He went back to pulling one of the long pins out of the crate.
Skye stepped in and with a tug, pulled out the offending connector.
"Show off," Teak grumbled to Jayce.
Skye moved around the crate and pulled the other long pins allowing Jayce to fold the sides down. He handed the pins back to Teak, who was glaring. Skye smiled back.
"How else can I help?"
"The tech who explained how to set it up said when we're done, it would be best to place it at the highest elevation we could find," Teak explained as he pulled up his bio unit and a number of screens appeared in mid-air.
"How fragile is it?" Skye asked.
Teak looked over at Skye and then back at Jayce before he shrugged.
"I got the impression it was pretty durable. They knew about the volcanoes and thought it could withstand even the lava flows and heat as long as we didn't drop it in the core," Jayce said.
"I'll talk to Arnak and see if he has ideas. Is the set up complicated?"
"No. Not really. The other shit they sent will take a lot more time than this one," Teak said.
Skye looked at the odd contraption and surrounding crate, wondering how they could move it when it struck him that if they rigged a harness around the crate, a dragon could easily carry it.
"I was going to ask you, Jayce; is there anything they sent that might help with keeping an eye out for those bugs?"
Jayce thought about it for a minute. "Maybe. They did send sensors we could use to set up a perimeter. That would allow us to rig up an alarm to go off if they approached," Jayce said.
"Did they send any auto-firing weapons we could tie into the sensors?" Garrett asked.
"Nothing programmable. Most of the weapons are anti-personnel. The biggest are like the one Teak's using, and we've got a shit-ton of cartridges for those. They did send some explosives and a selection of grenades: smoke, incendiary, and fragmentation. They wanted to send larger weapons, but there wasn't a good way to get them here, and Underhill wouldn't let any of Admiral Cocachet's men through."
"Wait. What about Cocachet's men?" Garrett asked in concern.
"The original plan was to send troops and the Protectorate guys who had first-hand knowledge of the tech and the beacon. Underhill wouldn't let them enter the gate from the palace. Even one of Quanta's mages couldn't get through. Then the Emperor tried to send more of his Imperial Guard, using only dragons, and Underhill wouldn't let them through either."
"You didn't mention this before," Garrett said.
"Garrett, this is the first we've spoken. Remember, we got pulled away almost as soon as we got back here," Skye reminded his mate. "Did you or Venci have trouble?"
"No, but the Emperor got a vision telling him that we were supposed to be here. Well, I guess it said Venci was to be in Underhill, and I was to come to you." Jayce looked back and forth between Skye and Garrett nervously.
"It's okay, Jayce. You have no control over Underhill and neither do we. It was just as confusing for us getting here. The communication is a little spotty."
"So do we worry that Underhill is now being selective on who gets in?" Garrett asked.
"Says the man who just told me to stop worrying. No, love. As you pointed out, I have enough to worry about, and I'm just going to take it on faith that Underhill has a reason, and hopefully a plan."
"I know they tried everything they could. I've never seen Prince Argos so agitated," Jayce said.
Garrett turned Skye around and kissed him tenderly. "My pater has a pretty big soft spot for my mate."
"Not to mention he's got two sons here as well," Jayce said.
"True. But Pater is more protective of Skye than he ever was of us. Do you think you can find those sensors? I'm not sure if we can get any set up before dark, but I would like to try."
"On it." Jayce ran off toward the stacks of crates. As they watched him go, a bright flare of light caught their attention, and the portal opened.
"Fingers crossed," Skye whispered.
Skye and Garrett watched in apprehension as Bram and then Bryan stepped through. From appearances, they looked okay. Skye and Garrett walked over to greet them. Before they even got close, Bryan smiled and held up his hands palm out.
"Chill. Venci got us a healer right away, and they took Kazemkhor off to get him settled," Bryan said.
"Any news?" Garrett asked.
"Yes." Bryan and Bram looked nervous.
Skye felt his stomach flip and waited patiently without trying to snatch the news from Bryan's head.
"The portal to the elf palace is gone, or at least it has been since Venci came through. He said it has only been a few hours, but when he went back to confirm something about the Emperor's vision, the tunnel where we came through was gone."
"Shit. You still going to stick with having faith?" Garrett asked.
"Yup. Unless you have a more productive approach?" Skye said.
"We'll focus on getting those sensors set up," Garrett said.
"Good plan." Skye turned as he felt Nik and River approaching.
"Hey, how can we help?" River asked. His hair was tousled, and his lips looked swollen. There were red marks along the side of his neck. Even more telling was the smile on Nik's face and how relaxed he looked.
Garrett chuckled and bumped shoulders with Skye. Looks like someone had a little fun.
"Really, guys? Here? How did you even find a secluded spot?" Skye asked, and either the wind shifted or something else happened that brought the clear scent of sex to his nose. Mistral, sometimes, heightened senses are not a good thing. Mistral didn't respond.
"Duh, there's a wall of crates, and like I'm going to say no to my mate who is in distress. You should never deny a needy dragon hole, and Father Dragon was it ever hungry," Nik said with a smirk.
"Ugh. You two!" Skye exclaimed.
"Seriously, bro. I think you need it even worse than I did. That's probably why you're so bitchy."
"I am not!" He bit back the next words as he felt the internal rumble from Mistral's laughing. Now you decide to respond? You can just stop because I am not bitchy, Skye thought to Mistral.
'Maybe not bitchy, but I could seriously use a good fuck and don't even try to deny it. Watching Raphael get boned gave us all sorts of ideas. And I know you've been watching Garrett's crotch every chance you get,' Mistral said.
God, I need it so bad. But we can't. We have to focus on saving lives and getting the hell out of here. We can't be distracted, and if I start, I'm not sure I'll be able to stop.
"Found them!" Jayce shouted.
"Coming!" Garrett yelled back. "Guys, we've got to help Jayce get those sensors set up. I for one, will sleep better knowing we'll get a warning. River, maybe you and Skye could fly patrol and keep watch while we're getting them in place?"
"I'll go grab Mica and the others," Nik said.
- Scene 2 *
I don't want to wake up, Skye complained to Mistral. He was finally comfortable with River's dragon form wrapped around his back and Nik tucked in against him.
'More sleep would have been nice,' Mistral agreed.
Skye concentrated on Garrett and could pick up the views of the valley as his mate flew patrol in the morning sky. Skye and River had done the first patrols while the others set up the perimeter sensors and had taken out two small swarms of the beetles. Other wing-mates took turns through the night, but Skye couldn't sleep. He didn't want to shield in case he was needed, and the anxiety as they fought off more swarms through the night kept him awake. Fortunately, the beetles were no match for dragon fire.
Ugh... we have a lot to do today, Mistral.
Don't wanna wake up, River's sleepy mind voice echoed in Skye's head. Or was it Storm's? Did he and Mistral sound different from each other? River's tail intertwined with Skye's possessively.
'No, Skye, unless it is by choice of words or we tell them, even our mate would have a hard time distinguishing between us,' Mistral said.
Mistral stretched his wings, nudging Storm back enough to untangle them and begin the shift. Within seconds Skye stood naked against Nik's golden dragon with Storm glaring at him.
"Come on, we've got people to save." Skye saw the direction of Storm's gaze as the dragon let out a hot huff of air. He glanced down and fought the heat building in his face as he turned away from the penetrating stare and searched for his clothes.
Explain it to him, Mistral. Morning wood is a perfectly normal occurrence.
Mistral snickered. 'You know that's not it. He's amused because you liked being between him and Nik.'
Well, we are not going to discuss that, Skye thought back and pointedly ignored his brother's additional snorts of amusement. Not his fault he liked being in the middle, human or dragon form...then again in human form...Ugh. Focus, Skye scolded himself. He was sure that it was some cruel plot by the fates that had given his brother the ability to read his mind and pick up his thoughts. Skye wondered briefly what it would be like if the whole wing piled up and slept together in their dragon forms. The idea made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. He got past Nik and River and could see many of the others had already gathered.
"Morning," Skye called.
"Morning. You're looking a bit tired to start the day." Mica handed him a rations pack and water.
"I couldn't sleep. The swarms kept coming all night."
Mica raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not shielding you guys out. I'll deal with it, okay." Skye dropped down on the ground and opened the packet. "It's bad enough having two of us in the air, but spreading the other guys out makes me feel vulnerable."
"The sooner we evacuate this village, the better. You saw how many swarms we flew over on the way back. They're not going to stop any time soon, and if we're between them and escape, well...it's not good. I wish we'd had more of those sensors. I'd have much preferred to have them around the whole circle, not just one side."
"That's why you have the others walking patrol?" Skye asked.
"Yeah. In theory, any threats should be coming from the north, but I hate to assume. I've already outfitted most of the others in the battle armor that they sent over. I'm going to check on how Teak is doing in rigging up that beacon. Yell if you need me." Mica walked toward the stacks of crates.
"We already separated the stuff Mica needs earlier this morning. And the sensors worked, that's good, right?" Jayce dropped to the ground beside Skye. "And Teak was up at the crack of dawn working on the beacon. He says it will be ready to go soon."
"Did Mica say who's up next for air patrol?"
"Nik and Corbin."
"God, I hope Arnak has his people organized and that Venci's ready for them."
"Don't worry. I told you that Lady Telawynn is helping him," Jayce said.
"That's good 'cause I have no idea what we're doing," Skye said.
Skye, Arnakkhor is approaching, Garrett sent.
You almost done? Skye asked.
Yeah, Kuai and I are coming in now to switch off. It's been really quiet. Not that we haven't seen any swarms or worms, but most have gone west of the village. All still heading south.
Sky stood and brushed himself off. He walked out to meet Arnakkhor, who was approaching from the settlement with a couple of his warriors. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Mica jogging over to join them.
"Skye, Mica, are you ready to get started?" Arnak greeted.
"We can be. Have you thought of any ways to reach the other fae?" Skye asked.
"Yes, but it's not going to be easy. We've lost all our mounts, so it will take weeks for the runners to reach them. And that assumes they aren't attacked on the way."
"If I may ask, sir? How many groups do we need to contact?" Mica asked.
"There are ten other races, not counting the dwarves. A few of them are near each other, and to be honest, there are a few I don't know how to reach," Arnak said.
Skye turned to Mica. They'd talked about options briefly, but he'd left it up to Mica to come up with plans.
"It's going to take longer than I'd like, but it would be much faster than traveling by foot," Mica responded.
"You have an idea?" Arnak asked.
"For the groups we can find, we'd recommend two dragons flying one of your messengers. Hopefully you can find one of your people who'd be willing. It will still take a while, but it's better than walking. We'll need to keep most of the dragons here to guard the path for anyone evacuating," Mica said.
"We also need to place the beacon," Skye reminded Mica.
"I wish we still had the horn to call the hunt. That was how we called the dark fae before the exile. The slaugh, banshees, and even the red caps would answer the call of the Wild Hunt, and it wouldn't matter that I didn't know where they were. The other group that might be a challenge is the sirens. They are more human-like but went the farthest and have become pretty reclusive," Arnak said.
"Meaning?" Skye asked.
"I'm not sure we can find them unless they want to be found. The elves were not kind to them," Arnak said.
"I'm sorry I don't know much about sirens. Was there a reason?" Skye asked.
"The sirens seduce with their voice, often singing to lure others in so they can mate. Typically they ate the male when they were done breeding. Even the dark fae are not immune, and of those who crossed, only the night elves were considered as worthy breeders. My people reacted in fear that they would be snatched away, and I'm sad to say that this place brought out the worst in all of us. I'm not sure they will listen to anyone but me."
Skye looked over at Mica. Maybe River and I should take Arnak to the Sirens as soon as we have the village evacuated?
You think Garrett will let you go? Mica asked.
If River is with me, yes.
I want you to take additional guards. Prince Argos would have my ass if anything happened to you two. But we're not sending you off until the beacon is placed and the village is clear. Mica stood firm.
Skye looked at his blond surfer dude and couldn't help but wonder if Argos had ever had Mica's ass for real. He knew that before Mica joined Skye, he'd been one of the Emperor's favorites. From the little he'd seen, that meant that at least the Emperor had been intimate with the handsome blond. Oh, well, we'll probably never know, Mistral.
'We could. All we'd have to do is read Argos or Darius when Mica is around,' Mistral suggested. 'Or you could just ask Mica.'
No, goodness no. We are so not doing that. We need to put our attention back on the fae.
"Arnak, we'll take you to the sirens when its time. Figure out who you can send to the others and then work with Mica to decide what order. I'll focus on getting the villagers through. About the horn...if we were able to find it, who can use it?"
"The king of the Court of Light is one, but it was mine. I was the Master of the Hunt. He tricked me into leaving it in his care when we came here. I have no idea what may have become of it if he's no longer living."
"I think I saw it in my visions when Underhill was telling me to come here," Skye said.
"If there is any way to obtain the horn, it would make our job much easier," Arnak said.
"I can't return to Underhill," Skye began thinking out loud. "But maybe I could send Jayce back to ask. If Underhill understood that it would help bring the fae home, it might cooperate."
"It would be worth trying. Thank you," Arnak said, turning to one of his guards and whispering. The guard ran back toward the village. "He'll bring the villagers."
"You'll stay with us by the gate to direct your people?" Mica asked.
"Of course."
"I'm going to get your power armor, Skye." Mica gripped Skye's shoulder. I want you protected before a stream of strangers gets close. After what we saw from Valters, I'm not trusting anyone until they prove themselves. Mica gave his shoulder a squeeze and walked away.
"Arnak, we'll want them to go through one at a time and space themselves out. Unless something has changed, there isn't a lot of room on the other side when you first pass through. I expect there will be mages working on the heartstone in the chamber where they enter," Skye said.
Arnak's head jerked up, and his eyes went wide. "Heartstone?"
"I believe so. The elf heartstone is in the center of the room of doors, but it has been cursed."
"So the stories were true," Arnak muttered quietly, looking away.
"You knew it was cursed?" Skye asked in surprise.
"No, shades no. I knew there was a heartstone, obviously, but I had no idea where it was. But there were stories of a magic room with portals to all the realms. The Queen of Air and Darkness spoke of it a few times. The King and Queen of Light used it but forbade her from even knowing where it was. How long has the heartstone been cursed?"
"No idea, but since the elves remaining didn't know where it was and didn't have any memory of ever seeing it, I'm guessing it was a long time. To set expectations, you should know that Underhill is not what it once was. According to the elves, the magic has been fading for a while." Skye was careful not to mention how much time had passed on the other side. He wasn't sure how to explain that to the fae king.
"And yet, it sent you to rescue us," Arnak said.
"Yeah." Skye took a deep breath, wondering what to say. "It started with visions, then it sent the Hell Hounds, and when we were finally in Underhill, it created a shadow figure to guide us and speak to me. So there's really no doubt about the intent."
"Underhill spoke to you?" Disbelief was clear in Arnak's expression.
"Yes. Not that Underhill was big into explanations, but it spoke and told me to bring you home," Skye said.
"It doesn't matter. Almost anything is better than this place," Arnak said.
"Before we start, we need to find the nearest high point of ground that might be clear of the volcanoes," Skye said.
"I'm not sure anywhere is safe, but there is an older mountain range running to the west. It's about two days by foot. We haven't seen any activity there, but it's not clear of the dust or gases."
"That should work."
"Can I ask why?" Arnak asked.
"We have a device that can signal to our ships. Of course it only works if this planet is in the same dimension and universe as Draga, but it's worth a shot. That way if something goes wrong or some are left behind, we may be able to rescue them. It's a long shot, I know."
"I understood about half of that. May we start sending people across?"
"Yes, were you able to convince your wife and son to cross?" Skye asked.
"Not without a good bit of arguing and threats, but they'll go, even if I have to send them through at spear point," Arnak said. "If I'm willing to send my own through first, it will also help encourage the others to follow. I'll speak to Mica about the messengers while we wait."
Skye ran into Garrett just as he got near the portal. His mate grabbed him and pulled him into his arms before claiming his mouth. Skye held on and opened to his mate, savoring the feel of his lips and the taste of his man. No one kissed him as well or as thoroughly as Garrett.
Missed you, babe.
Missed you too. I'd rather wake up with you wrapped around me. Need you so bad, Skye sent letting Garrett suck on his tongue and explore his mouth.
We'll make up for it when we get home, I promise. Garrett slid his hand around Skye's waist. Looks like Chaz has something for us.
"Mica asked me to get you guys to change before there are more interruptions." Chaz handed Garrett and him large bundles. Skye looked around to see if there was a place out of sight.
"Please, you can't be that modest, and you're only stripping down to your tights. If you're gonna be weird, I can call the guys over, and we can make a circle," Mica said.
"Fine." Skye set out the pieces and stripped off the standard armor he'd been wearing. He could feel Garrett's eyes on him and tried to ignore it.
'Why ignore him? Why not give him a little tease?' Mistral asked, making Skye smile.
He bent over and spread his legs a little. The effect was immediate. He heard Garrett's intake of breath and felt the heat burning through their bond. He stood and looked over his shoulder, then turned and adjusted his erection in the snug-fitting tights. Garrett's eyes were full of flames.
That's cruel, baby. I want you so bad, and now you're showing off in front of Chaz.
I was showing off for you. You like?
No, Skye. I love and now I can't decide whether I want that sweet dragon hole or your cock inside me more. And you've got a number of our wing-mates all hard and bothered.
Skye pulled on the armored pants and looked around. Oh, shit, Mistral. It wasn't just Chaz who was watching. Jayce, Corbin, and Kuai had their eyes focused on him, too.
Told you. Now, unless you want a full-on orgy, I suggest you get yourself covered quickly. And be careful 'cause you already know one of my fantasies is stripping you out of that armor.
Skye nodded without sending back a response. He could still feel the heat in his face, and his erection was painful. Bad enough to realize he'd unintentionally seduced his guys, but now he could feel the lust and knew very clearly what they were thinking. Garrett's thoughts might have been the worst, but then again, he knew Skye better than anyone. The image of being held in his mate's arms while the others took him one after the other... The feel of their bodies pressed against him, the taste and feel of their cocks, their lips kissing him, sucking him...
UGH. What is wrong with me?
'They are our wing-brothers, our family; it is natural to want to be with them and take pleasure. What is not natural is this place. As our mate said, we will return home and then show all of them what they mean to us.'
Mistral made it sound so clear and obvious, and as much as Skye wanted to satisfy every one of their wishes and make that vision a reality, he agreed with Mistral that this was not the place.
Skye pulled on the heavy jacket and started fastening himself in when Garrett stepped into him and began helping.
"Not taking any chances with you. I'm going to check every fastener twice." Garrett laid a delicate kiss on Skye's lips.
"I love you," Skye said, getting caught in Garrett's dark eyes.
"I love you, too. We're going to get through this together." Garrett pressed another kiss to Skye's forehead before stepping back and checking him over once more.
"Skye, they're ready," Mica called out.
Jayce. Skye reached out with his mind when he didn't see the gold nearby.
Yes, Skye, Jayce responded.
Can you meet me at the portal. I'd like you to go through first and make sure they're ready before we start sending the elves through.
I'll be there.
Skye stood to the right of the threshold and pulled his magic. When the portal opened, he could feel it. He looked at Arnakkhor leading the queue of night elves and took a deep breath.
"You ready, Jayce. Let Venci know they're coming and then return. I won't send any others through until you're back, and I have an odd request." Skye pulled Jayce a little closer before he spoke into his mind. When you're back in Underhill, I need you to take a moment and find a quiet spot. Then ask Underhill if it will let us use the horn. Tell it that we need it to call the dark fae who otherwise can't be reached.
"Got it." Jayce turned and stepped through the portal.
Skye didn't even have time for his mind to wander before Jayce stepped back out in front of him. Skye couldn't help but notice that Jayce's jacket wasn't fastened back up and his hair was messier than when he'd left.
"All set," Jayce said, giving Skye a nod.
Any luck getting through to Underhill? Skye was thinking how disconcerting it was that Jayce could have returned already when a scent caught his attention. He leaned a little closer to Jayce. Oh, my God. Him too? Skye straightened and decided for everyone's good; he'd ignore the scent of Venci on his wing-mate.
Jayce paled a little and nodded. That was so creepy. It was like the walls were talking. I'm supposed to return after one cycle has passed here.
Well then. Skye moved back to speaking out loud. "You okay? Doesn't look like you got vertigo this time, but you're a little pale."
"Yeah, I'm fine. I think the more you use the gateway, the easier it gets. They have people waiting to guide them through to Venci. Underhill gave him some kind of magic ledger to record who comes through. And I don't know if it means anything but it looks better, I mean the portal room and the chambers beyond - sort of like they're newer and less destroyed."
"Huh, maybe Underhill is sprucing up for guests. Arnakkhor, we're ready." Skye turned back to the fae king and saw that he was hugging his wife.
"I'll be there as soon as I can. I love you, Allana." Arnakkhor kissed his mate and directed her to the portal. She stepped through and was gone.
The next up was Jhaeros. Skye again thought the young elf was attractive. He felt drawn to him and wasn't sure why. He'd been impressed how he'd stood up for his mother and had come to their aid, but it was more than that.
"You'll take care of your mother and make me proud?" Arnak asked.
"Of course, Papa. I love you." Jhaeros grabbed his father and hugged him tight. Jhaeros reluctantly pulled away and stepped up to the doorway. He turned to Skye. "You'll take care of him, right?"
"I will, Jhaeros, and we'll see you in Underhill as soon as we can. Look for Venci, and tell him I said he needs to look out for you, deal?"
Jhaeros nodded and stepped through. He didn't take much with him, but as Skye looked at the others coming forward, at most, they had a small cloth bundle. Arnak greeted each person and wished them well before they stepped through. He was doing enough that they were spaced out. Skye couldn't see any pattern in how the first evacuees were selected. Other than not including any of those who looked like warriors, they were young and old, male and female.
It took until lunch before the line ended. Skye looked over at Arnak and saw the sad expression on his face and the slump of his shoulders.
"Is something wrong?" Skye saw the deep pain in Arnak's eyes and could feel the raw emotions even without dropping his shields. He'd pulled them up before the elves had started evacuating, not wanting to get overwhelmed.
"There are so few of us left. Except for twenty or so of my best warriors, that was the entire population of night elves. When we were exiled here, there were more than a thousand of us. My son and a handful of others are the only ones who've been born since."
"I am sorry. I wish there was more we could do." Skye didn't want to offer any empty promises. He had no idea what would change once the night elves were in Underhill.
"So do I. I have a couple of volunteers-" Arnak was cut off by a scream coming from the northeast. He turned to look, and Skye dropped his shields.
Guys? Skye sent.
Incoming. One of the villagers was outside the perimeter. I have no idea why but he got caught by the swarm before it reached the triggers, Mica sent.
Do you need me? Skye wondered if they should just fly farther out and destroy the swarms before they were even close, but there were so many, and it would take all of them to do it right, and then they couldn't focus on evacuation.
Corbin and Nik are already on it. The swarm turned at the last minute - we thought it was going to pass us to the east, and I sent them to check on a worm that's getting closer. Shit. Why was someone outside the village?
Skye turned to Arnak. "One of the villagers was outside the perimeter and got caught by a swarm. Any idea why?"
"Damn him. I told them to leave anything they didn't absolutely have to have. One of the elves, his father was a mage, and he'd hidden his things in the hills so no one would take them. After this many years, I don't know why he risked his life for them. That stuff is useless."
"I'm sorry. It's done now. Are there others we should watch for?"
"It's possible, I didn't keep track as they went through. But I assure you, I did warn them."
Mica, Arnak isn't aware of any of the other night elves going out but keep the patrols alert. He says it's possible. Some of them hid things outside the village and may go to collect before they leave.
I thought the villagers were evacuated, Mica sent.
Except for the warriors they should be.
"We'll do our best to watch out for others, Arnak, but it's a lot of ground to cover even for dragons."
"I understand. I have two of my men who have reluctantly volunteered to be messengers."
"Not so enthusiastic about riding dragons?" Skye asked.
"Terrified is more like it. I'll give them the mythcite chits to hopefully convince the others that it's real. But understand that if they refuse to come, there's nothing we can do. I don't have magic or enough warriors to force them," Arnak said.
"At that point it is their choice. I'd think the dragons alone would convince them that something is going on. We'll focus on saving those we can. Garrett and Bryan are going to take Teak to place the beacon. Can you give them any more specifics on how to get there?"
"If they fly west, they can't miss a mountain range."
"True. I'll let Garrett know." Skye walked toward a large clearing that they'd been using for shifting to dragon form. Garrett and the others were already there and waiting.
"You'll be careful, right?" Skye asked, hugging Garrett.
"I will, and we'll be back as soon as we can. Gil is going with us too."
Skye felt better knowing she'd be with them. She'd also changed to the heavier armor but still had her traditional longbow draped over her shoulder.
"I'll watch out for them, don't worry," Gill said, giving Skye a quick hug.
"Be careful." Skye glanced over at a very nervous Teak who was staring at his helmet like it was confusing him.
"Let me help you," Skye said, taking the helmet from Teak. He leaned in and gave Teak a kiss. "You're going to be fine. Garrett won't let you fall."
"I know but with all this armor shit I can't shift. If I knew I could shift and have my own wings it wouldn't be so scary," Teak was clearly no longer affected by the pills Devroe had given him.
"You're safer in the armor, and you've got two dragons and a bad-ass elf to watch over you. Will it take long to set up the beacon once you arrive?"
"No. I just have to power it up."
Skye lifted the helmet and placed it on Teak, making sure it was secure before he sealed it to his suit. It wasn't as comfortable or as a flexible as a flight suit, but it would work.
Turn on your comms unit. That way you can communicate with Gilian.
I won't be able to mind-speak Garrett or Bryan?
I'm not sure what my range is, but it will likely fade the farther you get away from me. Garrett will still sense you through the bond and get strong thoughts or emotions but you won't be able to speak.
Maybe we should develop a communicator that dragons can wear.
Skye felt a burst of pride. That's an awesome idea. They may already have something we can improve on. Skye felt a mental nudge from Garrett before he joined in.
They might. It's been a long time since any kind of mission was done in dragon form, Garrett added.
And they've also forgotten their magic. I see some flaws in Draga's idea of progress.
I'm not going to argue. We should go so we can make as much use of daylight as we can.
Skye moved back and watched as Bryan and Garrett shifted into their dragon form. As soon as they were done, Bram and Noud grabbed the discarded armor and clothing, moving it out of harm's way.
"Good luck," Skye shouted, watching Teak and Gilian mount and then the amazing sight as the dragons leaped into the air. Bryan circled, then swooped in and picked up the makeshift harness holding the crate for the beacon.
"Now what?" River asked from behind.
"Hey, didn't see you guys come up. They're going to place the beacon."
"Yeah, I figured. Are we waiting to send any messengers until they get back?" Nik asked.
"Yeah, let's see what Arnak needs."
- Scene 3 *
Skye followed Arnak through the village as they checked each makeshift dwelling for anyone who might have been forgotten. He got a strange and somewhat surreal feeling seeing the now deserted village and the poor conditions. Chaz and River were with them as well, but at the moment were outside the small hut.
"It is a very hostile world," Arnak said in a quiet voice as Skye held the cast-off tatters of a leather jerkin. "As soon as we'd build, something would happen to destroy our work. Windstorms, floods, earthquakes, creatures that even the fae considered nightmares."
"I know it's getting old, but I really am sorry." Skye dropped the tattered leather and stepped out into the late day sun. He glanced at his brother and could feel the empathy. River knew what was in Skye's head.
"I kept thinking 'if only,' if only we'd had some of the new technology, the equipment, the magic, materials to build, any of it would have helped, but we had nothing. The king assured us that we would want for nothing on the new world of Draga - it was a paradise even more beautiful than Earth; he'd told us."
"Yeah, well he lied on many counts. I haven't seen all that much of Draga, and it is nice and in many ways similar to Earth. But I wouldn't say better, okay except it isn't as polluted. I have no idea what it was like before the great war."
"Great war?" Arnak turned to Skye with a confused look.
"I'm not the one to ask. River and I are from Earth and have only been on Draga a short time. Do you know much, Chaz?"
"No. My people were established after the war, so it isn't part of our history or education," Chaz said.
"What we do know is that it was a devastating war involving many planets and species, and the dragons are still rebuilding," River explained.
"And Chaz, where were your people before this war? It is hard to believe so much happened in a hundred years," Arnak said.
"Arnak, my people were engineered or in simpler terms, bred into existence by dragon scientists. They were creating many types of shifters, ours was just one."
Skye glanced at River. Do I tell him about the time?
He's going to find out soon anyway. Better to build trust and not have him think we're hiding things, River responded.
"Arnak, there's something else you should know." Skye took a breath and waited for Arnak to pause and look at him. "Time passes differently in the worlds connected through Underhill. I can't explain much about it, but to say that while a hundred years have passed here, it has been well over a thousand on Draga. We're not sure exactly how long since we could find very little about your exile, and there's no one alive who would remember. Just old stories and tales that people weren't sure were real."
Even with his dark skin, Skye could see Arnak pale. His breath caught, and his eyes went wide.
"How is that possible?" Anak's voice broke with his words.
"It appears that Underhill can affect the passage of time when you step through the portals. When you saw Jayce return earlier, it appeared he'd only been gone seconds, and yet he says he spent hours in Underhill."
"So things really have changed, and the King and Queen of Light aren't just in seclusion?"
"No, they've been gone long enough they are just legends now. Stories in books," River said.
"That's also why I warned you it will be different than you remembered. The magic has been fading, the fae and other magical races have declined in numbers. Maybe your return is part of the solution," Skye said.
"Might be nice to be a good guy for once," Arnak said, but Skye could see the tension in the night elf's body, and the pain came off of him in waves. They both turned to the sound of running.
"King Arnakkhor!" one of the warriors called somewhat out of breath.
"Yes, Kavide, what is it?"
"It's Valters, my lord. He escaped!"
"Fuck," River said as he and Chaz moved in closer to Skye.
"What happened, Kavide, and where is he now?" Arnak asked
"I'm not sure, but Rikta took him his evening meal, and when he didn't come out, I went to check on him. He'd been strangled my lord, and it appears that Valters went out through a hole in the back wall. I don't know how he untied himself." Kavide looked somewhat terrified and Skye could understand why.
"Did you track him?" Arnak asked.
"Yes, my lord. He headed west of the village and into the hills."
"Stupid." Arnak turned to Skye. "Valters is consumed by hate and jealousy. He's never forgiven me for falling in love with Allanna. He'll try to hinder us for no other reason than to spite me."
"How did he become your general if he fights against you?" River asked.
"He hid it well. I did not realize his true intentions until you showed up. When my men restrained him, he made a confession of sorts. He was biding his time until he could be rid of me. He had hoped that I would not return from my last mission."
"You almost didn't," Skye said. "Do you think he had anything to do with your misfortune?"
"Only that he pushed that I should be the one to lead the scouting trip. He said if I went, I'd be able to convince the others to move if needed. Which I didn't question because it was true," Arnak said.
"I'm not worried, Skye. We'll keep a tighter watch on you and Arnak, but the primitive weapons he has access to are no match for our armor, though you might want to keep your helmet handy," Chaz said.
"Ugh, I hate wearing that thing."
"Me too, Bro. Me too," River said.
"What do you want done about him, Arnak?" Skye asked.
"If we can refrain from killing him, I would appreciate it. But I'm not going to risk saving the others to ease my conscience. He's killed one of our own; I don't think he can be saved. Though it pains me to say it, I don't think we can take him with us. If he survives until then, there are enough stores for him to survive on his own for a good while."
Skye felt his mate and glanced up at the sky. He could see the barest of specs in the distance.
Welcome home, Skye sent. He'd stayed in mental contact with Garrett throughout the day, so already knew everything had gone well. Now he was glad to have his mate back so he could hold him in his arms again.
Skye, we have a problem.
Skye faltered for a moment and wondered if they'd spotted Valters.
There are swarms of the beetles coming in from the southwest. I swear they're literally circling around our sensors and Skye; there are thousands, Garrett sent.
Skye quickly passed the message onto the wing.
"Arnak. We need to evacuate as many of your remaining warriors as we can. Garrett and Bryan spotted incoming swarms. We can shift and take to the sky, but we don't have enough dragons to carry all of you."
Arnak froze for a moment but quickly recovered. "Kavide, sound the alarm and get as many of the others as you can to the portal. You and Zade are going to get your ride on a dragon sooner than we thought."
Skye, Chaz, and River quickly returned to the gate "I'll send them through, you two can go ahead and strip and get ready to shift."
"Hell, no. I'm staying here to protect your ass," River said, crossing his arms.
"And since I'm 'riding' you, no point in me going anywhere," Chaz said with a wink.
Skye felt his body respond immediately to the innuendo and lust in Chaz's tone. He couldn't help but smile at how extremely hot Chaz and his brother looked in their armor. Even though he knew they looked good without it, the heavier armor made them all look like bodybuilders with narrow waists and broad shoulders. Skye felt Mistral's growl of agreement.
It was only a few minutes before Arnak led his remaining elves to the gate. He directed Kavide and Zade over to the clearing while he took up position opposite Skye. Skye pulled his magic, and soon the doorway was open and ready for them to pass.
"Thank you all for your loyalty. But there's no point in risking your lives if we can get you to safety," Arnak said to the group.
"But won't you need us? Who is going to protect you?" one of the warriors asked.
"Our new friends are more than capable of protecting me, and our people need you more on the other side. As soon as we contact the other fae, I'll be sending Zade and Kavide across too."
"You should cross and let us contact the others," a second warrior argued.
"I am the king, as little as that counts here, I need to be here and help as many of our people cross as I can. Thank you and please, watch out for the others and help in any way you can. I am proud of you." Arnak gestured to the portal.
One by one, the remaining warriors stepped through. The gate darkened as soon as the last night elf was through.
"Okay, we need to be quick. We'll figure out who you're riding as soon as we get to the clearing," Skye said.
"Took you long enough," Mica scolded.
Skye and the others stripped off their armor and carefully stored it in the crates Mica had ready. When Skye turned back to the clearing, Raphael was climbing onto Kuai's back. Bram and Noud were waiting to the side along with a very nervous looking pair of night elves.
"How are we doing this?" Skye asked.
"You might want to open up the group chat, Skye. It might help," Mica said.
"Sorry for not explaining this better, guys. I'm going to be speaking into your head. I'm a telepath and no, you're not going crazy. Just think what you want to say, and the others will hear it." Skye could see the confusion on their faces, but they didn't have time for a lengthy introduction to the topic.
"Great. River, you and Nik go ahead and shift. I want you to take Arnak, River. Nik, you take Noud. Now go!" Mica ordered.
The dragons quickly shifted, and Mica helped Arnak and Noud to climb on before River and Nik took to the sky.
"Zade, hang tight for a moment, I'll be taking you. Kavide, you're going to ride Corbin. I promise he's one of the best and won't let you fall," Mica said.
Corbin shifted, and like the others, Mica helped Kavide climb up onto his back and showed him how to hold on. Skye felt bad for Kavide as he let out a yelp of fear as they left the ground. Mica shook his head and turned back to Skye.
"Hey, pretty boy, your turn to shift," Mica called, pointing at Jayce. "Bram, I didn't forget you, we'll put you on Jayce once he's ready. Skye, you can shift as well and take Chaz up. I'm going to ask you and Bryan to take point on protection since you're the only dragons carrying experienced riders. We'll help out as we can but won't be making any quick maneuvers."
"Got it," Skye said as he let Mistral take over, and he felt his body expanding into his dragon form. Ready for this, Mistral? I'm leaving the flying and fire to you.
'I'm always ready,' Mistral responded, and they felt the comforting presence of Chaz climbing into position. It felt right and natural to have the were-dagger with them.
"Okay, Zade, it's our turn. Once I'm in my dragon form, I'll extend my leg so you can use it as a step to get on my back. Once you're there, put your ass between the spines and wrap your legs around my neck. You can hold on to the spine in front of you."
Mistral leaped into the air and began to circle; they wanted to make sure Zade and Mica got into the air safely. There was still no sign of the beetles, but they didn't want to take a chance.
When Mica took flight, Mistral joined him, and they flew toward where Garrett and the others were circling. Now that they were high above the village, Skye could see the approaching swarms. It made his stomach twist a little to see so many. It looked like a horror movie, with so many beetles you couldn't see the ground. As he got near Garrett, he could see Teak clutching tight to his mate.
You doing okay, Teak? Skye asked, directing his thoughts only to the fairy.
No. I was not meant to fly on a dragon. I have my own friggin wings, thank you.
Looks to me like you're doing great. Garrett said everything went well placing the beacon.
Yeah, easy as a pixie's snatch.
Skye had to pause until his brain restarted. I'm glad. Hang in there, and hopefully, we'll all be back on nice firm ground soon.
Not bloody likely. This place is fucked up, Skye. Even the ground doesn't hold still.
Skye opened himself up to the others, Anyone have suggestions? I'm not sure why they're heading toward the village. There's nothing there now.
But there was not long ago. They've gotten much more aggressive as the eruptions and gases forced all the other food south. They've made it quite clear we're on their menu, and we've noticed that they can almost smell or sense us, Arnak said.
Is there any reason to try and destroy those that enter the village? Mica asked.
No, as long as you think your crates are secure against them. We wouldn't want them to get your rations, Arnak said.
They should be fine. Those crates are made to withstand space travel and can take a direct blaster hit. They can't hurt the portal, so that's not a concern. We could flame them out, but there are so many it will take a while, Garrett said.
Perhaps if we hit them in the open area before they get to the portal and the village, we could at least steer them away or discourage them, Skye suggested.
Well be careful near the crates. They can take a lot, but dragon fire will give them a quick end, Mica added.
I'm not sure what good it will do, Arnak cautioned.
Yes, but if they're smart enough to avoid the sensors, then maybe they can learn. If we show them that it's dangerous and there is no food, maybe word will spread, River said.
Just don't tire yourself out, we need to stay ready for the conflicts we can't avoid, Garrett said.
Skye took that as a consensus. Bryan caught up to him, and together they flew toward the beetles.
Ready, Bryan? I was thinking we'd do alternating strafing runs. That way we're out of each other's way when we make a pass. I'll swoop, then pull up to the right and circle around. Chaz, hang on.
Sounds good, Bryan sent.
Mistral dove and they took a deep breath as they neared the ground. Mistral let out the blast of flame, and Skye inwardly grinned in satisfaction as the beetles popped like popcorn in the flames. It also caused the beetles following to try and change course creating absolute havoc.
Skye could hear more of the exploding beetles as he banked, and Bryan made his run. When he dove again, the beetles were trying to retreat, so he moved farther west and hit in the middle of the swarm. Now they didn't know which way to go.
It looks like they're veering south now, Skye, Chaz sent after their fourth run.
I agree. I think we can pull back for now, Bryan.
We ought to watch for a while to make sure it isn't a feint, and then they try to come back, Bryan said.
- Scene 4 *
"You think they'll be okay?" River asked for the fourth time. Corbin and Nik had volunteered to take Kavide at dawn, and River was nervous.
"You heard what Arnak said. He didn't think either group would react badly. The hobgoblins are like mischievous brownies, and they are the closest, and his best guess was the gnomes were only an hour farther from them," Skye said.
"But Nik..."
"He's going to stay in dragon form, he promised us, and it's not like he's little. He's wicked with his dragon fire, and Corbin's got the most military training of all of us. He'll be fine. I'm not shielding, so if they need me, I'll hear. But come to think of it, he's your mate. Can't you still feel him?"
"He's blocking me out," River huffed. "He said I was being overprotective and a pain in the ass."
"Eh, I can see that. I think Father and Pater have made him a little sensitive with their protectiveness. Maybe take a deep breath and get yourself to calm down. I guarantee that the moment he sees something interesting or wants to share, he'll let you in." Skye reached the portal and sat on the ground. Fortunately, the beetles didn't get anywhere close, so their camp was untouched.
"Has he already gone through?" River asked, dropping to the ground beside him.
Skye closed his eyes and looked for his bond to Jayce. He felt a mental hug from Garrett as his mate noticed him. Sometimes the connections to his wing-mates were like a spiderweb, and when one strand was touched, it sent vibrations to the others. Garrett was by far the most sensitive to the bonds Skye shared with his wing.
"Nope, Jayce just finished breakfast. He's on his way."
"Morning," Jayce said when he approached.
"Morning. You okay with this?" Skye asked. He noticed that Jayce had changed back to the standard armor. He figured it made sense since the tech in the other might have gone wonky in Underhill. Jayce shrugged - not that Skye needed the visual confirmation, he could feel how nervous his wing-mate was.
"Pretty sure it's going to be okay, Jayce. Underhill wants us to bring the fae back."
"I know, but I'm still getting used to the idea that dragons are fae and then to have it talk to me." This time the shudder was clear, armor or not.
"Yeah, and it spoke directly into my head," Skye said.
"So you think Underhill is a 'he'? The voice is masculine," Jayce asked.
"I have no idea, and I'm not sure assigning gender to the sentience of a...I don't know...alternate dimension really makes sense."
River snickered. "Probably male cause Underhill knows that's how to get into your pants." River leaned over and bumped his shoulder into Skye.
"River! That's...ew, no."
"I'd hope Underhill just presents you with the horn without any games, but be prepared for weird. If you have to kill time, maybe check in with Venci and see how it's going with getting the elves settled in," Skye said.
"Will do. Guess I've put it off long enough." Jayce stood at the threshold and closed his eyes. A moment later, the portal illuminated, and he stepped through.
"Well, that's done, isn't it?" River sighed. "I'm glad you decided to send out two messengers today. After the swarm yesterday and three fucking tremors overnight, I'm done with this place."
"We'll send the second team out as soon as Jayce returns," Skye said. He hated the thought of doubling up riders if they had to leave quickly, but he agreed with River, the less time they spent on the desolate planet, the better.
River pulled a leaf from a ground plant and began delicately pulling it apart. "Did you ever think you'd meet an actual goblin?"
"Ha! No, and I can't say it was on my bucket list either. I'm not looking forward to meeting most of the dark fae. I think the night elves gave us a very skewed impression."
"Jhaeros was pretty damn fuckable, wasn't he?"
"River!" Skye squeaked, quickly glancing around to see if anyone might have overheard. "You can't say things like that."
Fine, I'll mind speak you, but quit acting all offended. You know damn well you wanted to tap that hot black ass. River looked up at Skye as if daring him to argue.
I thought no such thing!
Please, he was so lusting after us, and I know damned well you felt the pull. He reminds me so much of a younger Taleel. Did you see if your magic noticed him?
'Careful, Skye,' Mistral cautioned. 'Think about this before you even think about lying to River. He'll know.'
No, I didn't touch him; we were never that close. And yes I felt a pull but was trying very hard to ignore it.
Dude, you can't keep fighting this. I'm pretty sure if I feel drawn to someone, then it's somehow connected to you. I was kinda hoping Arnak would set you off. Having the king of the dark fae as part of the wing would have been so cool. River grabbed another leaf.
That one we know for sure. I had to put my hands on him when I was checking for wounds. Not even a tingle, but yeah, I'll admit I had the same thought. I sometimes wonder why you didn't get this power. You'd have done so much better with it.
Nah, bro. Makes sense to me. Sure, I don't mind fucking, but you think about all that other stuff and make them feel like family. So next time you see him, promise me you'll check?
**Ugh. Yes, I will. Have you ever wondered why you're not drawing people to you? I mean, you're a platinum. Why don't you need to bond and create a wing?"
God, you are so stupid sometimes. River gave a light backhanded smack to Skye's chest. Do you not listen to all that shit Kwill is constantly spouting? I am part of your wing. I'm your protector... or enforcer, whatever. I don't want my own wing. 'You' my brother are the alpha dog of this pack.
Don't let the others hear you calling them dogs or a pack, or I can't be responsible for the outcome, Skye warned as Mistral snickered in the back of his mind.
Whatever. You think Underhill will give us the horn?
Yeah, I do. Skye thought about it a moment and felt pretty confident that if it would help them bring home the fae, Underhill would do whatever it could to deliver the horn.
River jerked and turned just as Skye felt the magic. The portal was starting to glow. They stood and dusted themselves off as they watched in anticipation.
The passageway expanded until it was full-sized and glowed brighter in a swirling cloud of grays and pale blue. A foot and gradually the rest of Jayce took form as he stepped through. He stood still a moment, and the portal dimmed and closed behind him. Jayce looked just as he had a few minutes ago with the exception of the large ram's-like horn in his hand.
"Got it," Jayce said, holding up the large horn. It was curved and had ridges along it's body that had been inlaid with what looked like gold. He held it for Skye to take, and as soon as Skye touched it, carved runes glowed across the surface. It was larger than he expected. And for some reason, he'd expected it to be brass or made of metal like an instrument. This clearly appeared to have once been on an animal.
"Um, Skye, should it be glowing?" River asked over his shoulder.
"If it makes you feel better, it was glowing in Underhill, too," Jayce said.
"Did you have any problems?" River asked taking a step back.
Jayce blushed. "Uh...no, but I gotta say Underhill is a bit unnerving. It looked better than the last time and Venci said a lot of new rooms have been added. The Master Mage said they are making progress on the heartstone. He's got more guys working with him now that weren't there the last time." Jayce paused. "Skye, there's a new guy helping the Master Mage who I think you need to meet. Quanta introduced him as a druid, but my dragon sense tells me that he's a shifter of some kind and..." Jayce blushed and glanced away as if trying to form his thoughts.
"He's?" River prompted.
"He's gorgeous. I mean like makes you want to beg, hot. And maybe he's got some kind of mojo like Skye, but I swear it was like he had a rope and was pulling me in. Anyway, Venci said to tell you that it's going well, that Underhill has built rooms to accommodate the night elves. Also, Kazemkhor is doing very well and is up and moving again. Lady Telawynn sends her best and said to tell you not to worry, focus on getting them through, and they'll take care of everything on their end."
"Wow. That's a lot, but what about the horn. Any challenges or issues getting it?" Skye noticed the smell of sex again wafting off of Jayce. He was starting to think his own abstinence had given him an overactive imagination, but Mistral agreed that their nose didn't lie.
Jayce laughed. "You're not going to believe this. You know that huge hall that we hid in when Kuai burned out the vines?"
"Yeah," Skye and River said.
"It looks like it was just built yesterday and snatched out of the Emperor's Palace. It's beautiful, and smack in the center was this fancy pedestal that looked like it was lit by a ray of sunshine. On top of the pedestal was the horn, just waiting for me."
"A bit of overkill?" River said.
"I'm not going to complain. No quest, no fights, I'm good with that," Jayce said.
"And Venci is doing well?" Skye asked.
Jayce blushed even more and nodded, "Um, yeah, he's...good."
I bet he's doing better after your visit, Skye thought then looked at the glowing horn in his hands. Mistral, can you feel it?
'Yes, almost like it is alive. It hums with power. Hopefully, it will work for Arnak to call to his people. And are we going to ignore Jayce's comment about the druid? I think it's odd that he would feel a pull as it sounds very similar to our magic when we discover a wing-mate. Also somewhat timely after River said he felt the same with Jhaeros.'
Yes, Mistral. I am most definitely going to ignore that and what River said. Nothing I can do about it, and I'm stressed enough without thinking my wing-mates can identify new brothers.
'Or sisters,' Mistral added.
Mistral, you are going to make me crazy. Just stop. I am not discussing this further. Skye insisted to his dragon. The mental snort in response did not make him feel better.
"We should get this to Arnak," Skye said.
"Skye, wait a sec. If he uses it now, how will that work if tomorrow, we're going to fly out to the sirens? Doesn't he need to be here if it calls the fae to 'him'?" River asked.
"Huh. I have no idea. Well, we can at least give it to him, and then he can decide when it's best to use it. I'm guessing since it was his, he'll know a lot more than we do. And now that Jayce is back, we can send Mica and Bryan off with Zade. Arnak said it wasn't as far as the mountains where we placed the beacon, so that gets them back before nightfall."
"I'll go let Mica know that they can leave while Jayce gets suited up in the good armor again. Then he can go with you to find Arnak," River said.
"Thanks." Skye helped Jayce get changed, carefully storing his stuff back in the crate. He did his very best to ignore the scent of sex, how his body responded to the handsome wing-mate, or how Jayce's body reacted to Skye's attention. He reminded himself over and over that this was not the time or place, but it was getting harder with each passing day.
"Ready to find Arnak?" Jayce asked, grabbing his helmet.
"Yeah, sorry about the other. I'm really trying to shield but..."
Jayce stepped in and cupped Skye's cheek. "Hey, it's okay. You know I'm up for anything you want, whenever you want. Please don't feel bad about it. I love you, Skye."
"Thank you, Jayce. I love you too." Skye gave in and kissed him. Not a long or passionate kiss. But one full of affection. He could swear that he tasted Venci on Jayce's lips - something he tried not to think about.
It didn't take much to find Arnak. He was watching Garrett and Teak as they worked on some type of communications booster. They were using a couple of crates as a work surface with odd parts spread out all around them.
"Is it supposed to be in pieces?" Skye asked.
"No. It isn't, but that would assume it worked in the first place," Teak grumbled.
"It worked; he just wasn't happy with how it worked. Teak decided to improve it and that's why," Garrett waved his hand over the disassembled parts.
"Well good thing he's got a smart engineer like you to help him," Skye said.
"You mean, hand me things as I need them," Teak said, rolling his eyes, then he looked up in surprise. "Is that it? You got it?"
Skye held out the horn, and Arnak gasped. "May I?"
"Sure, I think it belongs to you anyway." Skye felt his stomach drop when the horn went dark as soon as it was in Arnak's hands.
"Was it supposed to do that?" Teak asked, staring at the horn.
"No, it wasn't." Arnak looked at Skye and handed the horn back to him. As soon as it was in his hands, the glyphs illuminated.
"Okay, this is awkward," Skye said.
"Makes sense to me," Teak said. "Maybe it's like the portal. It won't work for me or the elves on this side, even though I'm fae. But for the dragons, it works. Maybe the horn works the same way."
"Easy to test, Garrett, would you?" Skye handed the horn to Garrett, and it went dark.
"Crap," Skye muttered. "Now what? You're the one who can use the horn, Arnak. What if I put my hands on you while you hold the horn."
Garrett snickered, handing the horn to Arnak as he smirked at Skye. Babe, that sounded kind of sketchy.
Skye put his hands on Arnak's arms and... nothing.
"It was worth a try. What do you think it means, Arnak?"
"That Skye is the one who will need to call the fae. If the horn acknowledges him, as it appears to be doing, then he should be able to use it," Arnak said.
"I don't think Underhill would have given us the horn if it wouldn't work," Garrett said.
"Yeah, but does Underhill understand this place or even the concept that there is no magic here? We'll try it once we get back, but we need to think of a backup plan." Skye opened the crate where they kept the spare armor and carefully wrapped the horn before placing it inside. Just as he closed the box, the strange feeling came over him again. Within seconds the ground was shaking, followed by a loud thundering boom. The ground shook hard enough this time that it knocked Skye to the ground.
"That didn't sound good," Teak said as he began gathering the parts that scattered in the tremor.
"Another eruption. From the looks of it, a big one." Arnak pointed to the south, where the cloud was still forming on the distant horizon.
"Do we need to worry about fallout or gases?" Garrett asked.
"We're far enough away that we should be okay, won't save us from the ash, though. We might want to move the crates under cover, or you'll be digging them out. It depends a lot on the wind, but right now, it is in our favor," Arnak explained.
"That's not the direction Mica was flying, is it?" Skye asked.
"No, but the ones that left this morning may have to circle around on their way back," Arnak said.
"Okay then, I guess we have crates to move. Did we decide to try Mica's plans and burn a fire line around the village? I know there's not much growth, but if those volcanoes set off a fire, it would be good to have a barrier. Maybe it will discourage the beetles as well." Skye looked at his companions and felt others of his wing coming their way.
"You've got the plan, babe. Start assigning people," Garrett said.
"Right. So who wants to carry crates, and who wants to start fires?" Skye called out.
"Aw, come on, Skye. I just put the fuckin' armor back on! What is it with you? Armor on, armor off. Can't we just make up our fuckin' minds?" River said.
Hm... I think my brother misses his mate.
Runs in the family. Both of you get really bitchy when you don't get enough sex, Garrett sent.
Skye spun on Garrett and could feel the power gathering in his fingers. His mate returned his glare with a raised eyebrow.
"Garrett D'Or Drakken!" Skye seethed.
"Yes, dear. Sometimes the truth hurts, and thank you for proving my point."
Skye wanted to scream but figured that would just make his mate more difficult and condescending. He was going to go burn something.
- Scene 5 *
"You'll be careful," Garrett whispered as he kissed Skye before he closed his helmet back up. The tremors had come almost hourly since the eruption and the ash had arrived in full force by morning. They'd been forced into wearing their helmets to be able to breathe. Several inches already covered the ground.
"More careful than you would," Skye said, squeezing Garrett's ass.
"You're going to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid, right, River?" Garrett called out.
"That's a big order. How about if I keep him safe instead." River didn't even look away from Nik as he responded. He immediately began kissing his mate again once the words were out. Skye wondered if you could get the helmets stuck together - it looked odd enough as it was.
"I don't think I need both you and Corbin to fly along with us. Isn't that a bit overkill when you're already sending Chaz?" Skye asked as Mica finished storing their armor. Hearing his voice thought the suit's speaker still sounded odd. So far Teak's "improved" signal booster seemed to be working very well.
Mica turned and opened his helmet long enough to give Skye "the look."
"I'm going to throw in tights for you and River since Arnak thought you might have to meet with them too."
"We can't take clothes or at least the light armor?" Skye asked.
"Sorry, I don't have dragon packs. We can take what will fit in Chaz's backpack. We did not plan on spending so much time on dragon back, and it wasn't something they sent back with Jayce," Mica sent.
"Hey, Skye. When we get back, maybe you could ask Master Quanta for a 'bag of holding.' That way we could take whatever we needed," River said.
"I don't think that's real, River," Skye said reluctantly, pulling away from Garrett. I'll keep my link to you open at all times. You need to be careful too, okay?
Garrett gave Skye another hug. Come back soon.
Ugh. I hate being separated from him, Skye mentally complained to Mistral.
'It was your suggestion that he needed to stay and be in charge since Mica and Corbin were going. And don't even say you didn't need to take guards. Can you imagine even explaining that if something were to happen? They might as well stay here.'
I hate logic, Skye grumbled to himself. He turned and saw Arnak walking toward them. It made him think for a moment seeing the night elf in the black light armor. He looked so much like Taleel; it was unnerving. Skye had hoped they could put Arnak in a borrowed powered armor suit but being customized, none would fit him well enough to not make it awkward to fly. At least they'd found him a helmet.
River had already shifted and waited patiently for them to help Arnak mount. Finally, it was Skye's turn. He reluctantly handed off his helmet and armor to Garrett and covered his nose and mouth with his hands.
"Shift as soon as you can. Mica said the ash isn't as bad in his dragon form. We sure are getting a lot of practice flying since we got here. I think Colonel Bianchi would be pleased," Chaz said as he walked with Skye into the clearing.
"I wish it was under different circumstances. Like flying for fun." Skye blushed as Chaz's thoughts brushed his mind. Of course he was standing completely naked in front of the were-dagger. He took a couple more steps to give clearance and blushed even more, though it was nice to know Chaz liked his ass.
The shift came easily, and Mistral stretched his wings and extended his foreleg to give Chaz an easier mount. Mica was right, the ash was still irritating, but he could breathe okay.
Let me know when you're ready. Skye asked, taking comfort from the familiar feel of Chaz on his back.
All set, Chaz responded.
Mistral leaped into the air, the force of his wings raising a dense cloud of ash.
According to Arnak, the sirens had moved near a mountain range to the west but much farther south. It meant they had to take a somewhat indirect course until they got high enough to avoid the fallout.
When they rose above the clouds, the sky was clear and bright. While Mistral could feel how cold the air had become, it felt refreshing. They kept their telepathic link open so that Arnak could direct them. The night elf was a little nervous about finding the sirens since he hadn't been in direct contact with them for many, many years. Skye wasn't really worried about it since if they got close enough, he should be able to sense a sentient presence.
When they'd flown for a few hours, Arnak said they should be getting close to the range where he'd last seen the sirens. They dropped below the cloud cover and scanned for any signs of life. The air still carried traces of smoke, and the glow of fires spread across the ground below them.
Are we looking for a lake or a large body of water? River asked.
No, last I saw, they were taking shelter in the caves, Arnak said.
But don't they need water? River sounded confused.
Skye picked up on the disconnect and had to wonder if they were all looking for the same thing.
Arnak, what do sirens look like?
They can present themselves in different ways, but usually as a woman with the lower half of her body as a bird of prey and large wings.
That's not a siren, that sounds more like a harpy, River sent.
Skye was equally surprised but scolded himself for assuming. But River wouldn't know, he hadn't studied mythology. River, the Greeks described them as half-women, half-bird. That's what Homer wrote about. It wasn't until much later that writers crossed the legends with mermaids.
How do you know this shit? So you're saying we're looking for harpies?
Kind of, yeah.
Guys, off to the right about two o'clock, there's something in the air, Mica sent.
Skye turned to what appeared to be just a spec in the distance near some of the higher peaks. He reached out with his mind. Skye wasn't sure what he expected to sense, but what he got was terror, absolute terror. He pushed a little harder and gathered his magic to see if it would help with his telepathic reach.
"Fly, fly, fly, fast as I can, have to warn them, have to warn them." Skye picked up the clear thought and wondered what it could be.
That's not a bird. Skye sent to the group.
They followed the spec, easily gaining until they could see an extremely large bird. Skye thought it most resembled an eagle, but a whole lot bigger. The "eagle" dove toward one of the peaks and disappeared.
I think we've found them, Arnak said. Not sure how to narrow it down unless one of you saw where it landed.
I'll guide you, Skye sent as he kept his mind open and followed the emotions and panicked thoughts of the bird. As they drew close the mountainside, Skye could feel other minds and thoughts. Not clear enough yet to understand, but he knew they were close. He spotted a ledge and the dark entrance to a cave.
How do you want to do this, Arnak?
If there's a way to set me down on the ledge, I will approach on foot.
I hate to say this, but you'll need to take off the helmet so they recognize you. I'm sure we look rather alien at the moment, Mica said.
I can land there, no problem. Storm landed smoothly, and Arnak climbed down and stretched to get his land legs back.
I expect that I will have to introduce you if they don't kill me outright, but perhaps fly at a safe distance until I call. Their most dangerous weapon is their voice and their music.
Skye, pretty sure I can shield us from that, if you want to focus on hearing what's going on. River offered.
Skye didn't even pause before agreeing. River may not have been as far along in some of his training, but Kwill had beat shielding into them to the point they did it without thinking. Skye had no doubt River could shield them as well as Arnak.
Arnak stepped into the darkness, and Storm leaped into the air to join them as they waited. Arnak had barely moved out of sight when Skye picked up the first thoughts.
"Greetings, winged-one, I am Arnakkhor, once king of the dark fae. I don't believe we have met. I come with news for the Mother and beg an audience."
"And the dragons?" the winged-one asked.
"They arrived from Underhill several days ago. They made my journey possible."
"Wait on the ledge," the other responded.
Moments later, Arnak stepped back into view and sat with his back against the cliff face. It took several minutes before Skye picked up on a voice though no one stepped into sight.
"You may speak with the Mother, but bring one of the dragons as well. No weapons."
Arnak stood and turned to search the sky. Did you hear, I have an audience, but one of you must join me.
I'll land first, River sent, and Storm swooped toward the landing, shifting before his feet touched the surface. He moved out of the way, and Skye followed.
As soon as Chaz dismounted, Skye shifted and waited for Chaz to hand them the tights. It felt odd being seen in what they otherwise treated as undergarments. But as he looked at River, he bit back a snicker.
We look like we're going to a Yoga class, Skye sent.
That's okay. We look hot regardless, River responded.
Chaz set the backpack and his weapons outside the entrance and turned to Skye. Any instructions?
Not that I know of. Answer any questions honestly; we have nothing to hide. I'll keep our link open, so Arnak can guide us if needed, Skye said.
Arnak stepped into the darkness first, followed by Chaz, then Skye and River.
Skye was glad that River was shielding them because it would have been challenging to do that as well as filter through the thoughts and emotions he was picking up. Sadly, he wasn't getting anything helpful, more of a jumble of fear and confusion.
The tunnel went on for quite a while until they stepped into a larger set of connected caves. He didn't take time to look around or bother trying to analyze what they saw. Skye was more focused on following Arnak and not tripping on the rough stone floors.
They came to a large cave illuminated with torches. Skye did his best to hide his reaction and keep his poker face at the sight before him. Several sirens were crouched in a semi-circle watching them. Skye knew River was screaming "harpies" in his head, and he really couldn't disagree. The creatures were half-women, half-bird, and not attractive in the least. They all looked quite old with sagging skin, drooping uncovered breasts, and gray, straggly hair. At least they looked clean. And behind them in the shadows was a young man or boy. Skye recognized the mind immediately as the bird they'd followed. There were a number of other women in the room as well - all in human form.
"King Arnakkhor, it has been a very long time," one of the older women in the center said.
"Mother, I am honored by your acceptance." Arnak bowed.
"And you look no different than you did on your last visit, though your clothing is different."
Arnak bowed his head again but didn't respond.
"You told my wing-sister you have news for me? The boy warned us that dragons were approaching. Your news must be quite interesting, given that you arrived here on a dragon. And tell me, King Arnakkhor, since when have we had such beasts on this desolate rock and how did they become your companions."
Skye felt her eyes take them in, giving him, River, and Chaz serious scrutiny. Those present in the room all looked at them with a frightening hunger that Skye did not like in the least. Like he, Chaz, and River were on the menu. All except for the young man, his emotions were a mix of fear, confusion, and curiosity.
"May I begin by presenting my companions, Prince Skye, Prince River, and their warrior, Chaz. The other two dragon warriors that circle above your mountain are Corbin and Mica. All of them hail from Draga. They came here through the portal."
"Draga?" Mother bit out with venom. "The portal is dead, how is this possible?"
"The planet we thought we were travelling to, yes. They have been able to open the portal at will since their arrival," Arnak said.
"Continue." Mother continued to look them over with careful scrutiny as she listened.
"May I give you something?" Arnak reached into his pouch and pulled out one of the glowing chits. A woman came from the side and took the chit handing it to Mother. Skye was surprised because the woman looked somewhat like a night elf, but her skin was much lighter and her features softer.
Mother gasped as she held the chit in her hand and marveled at the glowing symbol.
"It is a token provided by Underhill to prove Prince Skye's claim. He has come to take us back to Underhill. My people have already gone, and we are contacting all the other races and begging them to come to the portal and leave this place."
Mother jerked her head up, and the look in her eyes was fierce. "You have already sent your people?"
"Yes. We have been overrun by the beetle swarms, and the lava flows and fires get closer each day. The portal is safe and accessible for now, but I fear it won't last long. The tremors and eruptions are growing more frequent."
"Here as well." Her fiery gaze turned to Skye. "Speak to us, why should we believe you?"
Skye took a deep breath. He didn't want to shield out their thoughts because he might pick up something important, but it made it hard to think.
"Underhill contacted me and demanded that I come and bring the dark fae back to Underhill. The world you left behind is very different now. The King and Queen of Light that did this to you are long dead. Magic is fading and Underhill with it. We believe your absence is contributing to the problem. As Arnakkhor said, I and my dragons can open the portal to allow you to return to Underhill. However, this world is unstable, and we do not have much time. The longer we wait, the more likely it is the way will be cut off."
"The elves permitted dragons into Underhill; I find that difficult to believe," Mother said.
"It is a rather convoluted story, but the elves and other fae are working with the dragons now. Underhill has made it very clear that dragons are 'fae' and has not only accepted our presence but encouraged it. And how could we come through the portal unless Underhill allowed it?"
Mother gave an evil smile. "If only the King of Light could see this day. I would treasure his reaction." She gave a cackling laugh. "It is unfortunate that you did not arrive sooner. We are dying. Our race is taking its last breath. We haven't had a sister born to us in the last four decades."
Arnak looked around, and Skye felt his trepidation and even shock when he looked at the young man. "It appears that somehow my night elves have found their way into your clutches. I'm surprised as I never heard of them going missing. Yet, the evidence is clear."
"We are not foolish. We adapted and did not consume those with whom we mated. We took their memories and released them back to where they had been captured. It was challenging, but for a while, it worked. Then the fates betrayed us and started giving us worthless male hatchlings. Come forward boy." Mother's tone was cold and full of hate.
The young man stepped forward and knelt in front of the sirens with his head bowed.
"This is our curse. Unlike the other crippled hatchlings, this one refused to die. Our wombs are worthless now. What good would it do to escape?" The bitterness came out like venom.
Skye took a deep breath and tried not to react. Mistral was practically clawing at his chest. The poor young man looked starved, and worse were the visions, the memories he'd picked up from Mother. The other male births hadn't been stillbirths, and the babies weren't crippled, they were abandoned and starved. The anger was trying to take over at the cruel, cold treatment of their children, but Skye wasn't here to pass judgment.
'We must save him. He is so much like Christos when we found him. They don't even feed him,' Mistral whined, still clawing to get closer.
"Like the rest of us, the loss of magic has taken its toll. But there is still the chance that when you return to Underhill, you will heal, and your ability to have new wing-sisters will return," Arnak said in a voice way more reasonable that Skye thought he could muster.
There was a flurry of whispers from the other sirens, and Mother sat back and listened. Skye and his party stood in awkward silence, waiting as the sirens continue their quiet discussion as if no one else was present.
Arnak, what is it with the male children? I don't understand, Skye asked as he continued to monitor the harpies' conversations.
Sirens have always been matriarchal, and as far as I know, they only birthed females. I've never heard of a male siren, but perhaps the magic is what gave them only girls.
Skye, we have to save him at least, Chaz mentally whispered to him.
Skye glanced at Chaz and saw his were-dagger's eyes focused on the young man. He turned to River, who was also staring. River?
He's right, Skye.
Mistral, do you think it's odd they're having this reaction. Empathy and compassion aside, this feels like more.
'How can you ignore it? We don't have to touch him to know, Skye. He is ours.' Mistral's voice in his head was full of accusation.
Skye looked back at the young man. He was beautiful in his own way, golden brown skin, dark eyes and hair, and slightly pointed ears. Skye could almost imagine how attractive he'd be if he was fed and cleaned up. But what pulled at Skye more than anything was his mind, or maybe it was his soul. It was like a piece of a puzzle he hadn't known was missing.
"We have decided," Mother said, breaking Skye's train of thought.
Arnakkhor bowed.
"I am too old to make the flight. My days are numbered, and I cannot forgive and forget what the Court of Light did to us. However, I will allow my wing-sisters to return with you if they choose to do so."
"And the boy?" Arnak asked.
"The hatchling is too weak to make the journey, and why waste your time? He's of no value," Mother said as if she were speaking of trash.
"I'll carry him," Skye said before he even realized he was speaking.
Mother's eyes snapped to him. "Why would you want to?"
"Underhill asked me to save everyone I can. If you have no use for him, I will claim him and take him in. You and your sisters need not concern yourselves with his care any longer." Skye could feel Mistral shoving the words into his head as he spoke. His dragon was more than adamant that the young man was coming with them.
"Fine. It's your burden now. Sisters, the choice is yours. If you wish to go, say your goodbyes and take on your true form. You have a long flight ahead of you."
Skye reached out his hand beckoning to the young man. The boy looked up with fear still clear in his eyes. River and Chaz both stepped forward, helping him to his feet.
"We've got you. Don't be afraid," Chaz whispered.
The boy stepped forward, and Skye pulled him into his arms. The jolt of his magic was immediate and strong. He clung even tighter to the young man and held him while the boy sobbed. Skye knew that he was overwhelmed and somehow aware of the connection, but not sure what to make of it.
"We will wait for your sisters on the ledge. I bid you farewell, Mother," Arnak said with a bow and then turned and joined them as they exited the caves.
When they reached the ledge, Chaz grabbed his pack and weapons. He turned to Skye. "May I have your shirt? If you don't mind sacrificing, I can at least make a mask to help the boy on the flight."
Skye pulled off his shirt and pants to prepare for the shift and noticed the boy staring at him with lust. His loin cloth noticeably tented.
Huh, looks like he's gonna be a good fit for the wing, big brother. He already wants you to fuck him, River sent.
So inappropriate, River. I'm sure it's just all the excitement and fear.
River punched Skye in the arm. Dude, I can read his mind.
Chaz made a makeshift cloth mask and tied it over the boy's mouth and nose, then took River's shirt and pulled it on over his head. "It gets cold where we're flying. This will help. I promise I'll hold on to you and keep you safe."
"Do you have a name?" Skye asked.
"Boy," the young man said hesitantly.
"Well, we gotta fix that, right, Skye? Once we get him fed and healthy, he can pick his own," River said.
Skye shifted and ignored the tirade he was getting from Mistral. Soon, Chaz and the "boy" were mounted, and he took off. They only circled for a while before the sirens shifted and joined them in the air.
There are so few, Arnak, Skye sent as they banked and flew higher to begin the journey back to the village.
But there are some. We offered, Arnak replied.
Skye counted the large birds of prey. You think twelve is enough Mistral. Will they be able to rebuild?
'Time will tell. First, we have to get them to Underhill.'
