It was about two in the morning when Davey slowly came awake, wondering where he was trying to remember what had happened. A sharp jab of pain in his rear brought back thoughts and not very happy ones of his first day at El Paso high school and the terrible things that happened to him. He looked around the room realizing that he was in a hospital bed. The bed next to him had a sleeping figure, which he instantly recognized as the boy who saved him. He shook his head to try and clear it so he could remember the boy's name, then it came to him, Carlos, who so bravely not only saved his life but that of the principle he had met for the first time just a few minutes before those four boys set on him.
He tried not to think of what they had done to him and put it out of his mind. He turned his head the other way, noticing a woman sat reading a book, and wondered who the hell she was. He was startled by seeing her, letting out a little cry. The woman turned and smiled at him putting down her book.
"Who are you?" He demanded to know, not being able to trust anyone anymore especially strangers.
"Don't worry Davey, I'm the mother of one of Carlos' friends I thought you might appreciate a smiling face when you woke up, my names Gloria."
Still not trusting anyone, he looked across at Carlos who had been awakened by the noise. Carlos smiled, nodding his head indicating that this lady was ok.
He began to look around the room noticing a familiar looking box standing in the corner, moving his eyes around the room he also saw some of his trophy's on display and a couple of photo frames on the side locker next to his bed. He smiled when he noticed these things because he thought he had lost them for good. He was also puzzled at how they had surfaced in this hospital room. Tears began to form in his eyes as he started to go back into his memory thinking of all the bad things that had happened to him in the past and when he thought he had left them all behind everything started up again at his new high school.
Gloria noticed Davey's sad look moving to the side of the bed putting her arms around him speaking softly and lovingly to him.
Carlos was amazed that Jacob's mother, who in the past had so much hate inside her, should be here in the middle of the night helping a complete stranger. Plus, Davey looked quite content lying in bed with Gloria's arms around him. Carlos was still feeling drowsy from the effects of the drugs he was given and felt his eyelids getting heavy as he slowly drifted back to sleep, content that Davey was safe with Gloria for now.
The next time he awoke was when the nurse came in to take his temperature and blood pressure. He looked across to see Davey and Gloria sound asleep, both heads on the one pillow and Gloria's arm still around Davey.
It was a pity that the nurse had to wake them up next, because they looked so peaceful lying there.
The nurse shook Davey and he woke giving out a mighty scream, making every one jump.
Carlos got a bit angry saying,
"Be careful, he's been through a lot and is still very jumpy."
"Well, he'll just have to get over it and quickly, I have another twenty patients to see and not a lot of time."
Carlos was getting real mad by now and it was taking a lot of willpower to keep himself in bed and not get out to teach that nurse a lesson.
"It's alright Carlos, the nurse wasn't to know and she is very busy."
Gloria smiled across at him before talking softly to Davey explaining what the nurse had to do. Once again Carlos was stunned at Gloria's actions. He kept wondering is this the same lady who wanted nothing to do with her son Jacob, trying her best to change him from being gay.
Not long after the nurse had gone, the doctor arrived to look at them both. After checking Carlos' wound, he told him he should be able to go home tomorrow. He went to pull the curtain around Davey so he could examine him but Davey screamed at the top of his voice calling for Carlos. "He's still in shock doctor and won't do anything or go anywhere without me.
The doctor nodded ok, asking Davey to lie on his stomach so he could look at his wounded butt. Pulling his pyjama bottoms down he tried to gently pull his butt cheeks apart but Davey would have none of that, twisting and turning yelling, making it very difficult for the doctor to help him.
Carlos jumped out of his bed onto Davey's lying beside him and putting his arm gently around him soothing him down until all that could be heard was the occasional sob.
"Davey, the doctor needs to check on how things are back there because last night he had to operate on you and put stiches in as well. I know it will hurt but trust us please."
Davey looked into Carlos eyes and whispered, "Are sure I'll be alright?"
"Of course you will the doctor will try not to hurt you but it may hurt a little bit ok?"
Davey nodded and Carlos indicated to the doctor to continue. As he did Gloria sitting on the other side of the curtain was in turn marvelling and wondering, is this the same Carlos, gang member, junior criminal fresh out of detention feeling and caring for someone else.
While the doctor examined Davey he kept whimpering and jumping around with the pain but Carlos hung onto him tight reassuring him all the time that everything would be all right.
When he had finished the doctor said,
"There's a lot of damage which is going to take a long time to heal, we'll keep you in for a few more days until your wounds have mended some more, plus we may have to take you back into theatre for some more minor surgery but we'll see how you go."
He pulled back the curtain after Carlos had helped young Davey get his pyjama bottoms on again. Gloria was still there but looking very tired so Carlos suggested she go home, and get some sleep. She agreed leaning over to give Davey a kiss and a cuddle that he accepted eagerly. She went round to do the same with Carlos but he put out his hand for her to shake. Smiling she accepted it before leaving.
Breakfast arrived and both boys realizing how hungry they were, tucked in with gusto. While eating Sally walked in and a surprised Davey smiles all over, his face greeted here.
"I never thought I'd see you again." He said.
"Neither did I." was the reply as Davey introduced here to Carlos and then finding out she had already met him last night.
"Thank you again for saving Davey's life."
Carlos blushed at the praise mumbling that it was nothing or words to that effect. He was still not used to people praising him for doing good deeds, which a few years ago he wouldn't even have thought of doing.
Sally continued, "I have made an appointment for this morning to see the detective handling your case Davey and I will be asking him what charges we can bring against Doctor Buchanan. I believe if we can prove that she coerced her son Garret into harming you we can possibly charge here with attempted murder as well as her son. I also spoke earlier this morning with Luke, my son who you may remember I told you yesterday is a captain in the Texas Rangers and he offered to come to El Paso and help if I need him."
Davey lay there taking all this in, thinking that finally he had found some people who are willing to help him not abuse him. Carlos mother arrived giving her son a kiss before going round to Davey's bedside doing the same to him. This time Davey allowed her to kiss him on the cheek and give him a hug.
Mrs Medina had brought some clean clothes for her son and had also dug into the cupboard at home seeking out clothing that would fit Davey.
Being shorter and slimmer than Carlos is, it was difficult to find clothes that would fit but some of her sons clothes from a couple of years ago looked as if they would be all right. In Fact Davey was on the small size for his age, possibly due to the fact that for years he wasn't looked after right or fed the right food. He had blonde hair slight build, but what you might call wiry which would have helped him obtain his black belt in Karate.
Sally left to keep her appointment with Detective Alvarez and shortly after Mrs Medina kissed them both goodbye telling them to get some rest.
Feeling more confident and slightly happier than he was Davey turned to Carlos smiling at him,
"Thank you Carlos for what you did, for saving my life I will never be able to repay you, ever."
Carlos blushed a deep red once more thinking, I'll never get used to having praise heaped onto me. They chatted for a while longer talking in general. Carlos was interested in Davey's black belt in karate, plus what the requirements to get one were. Once he got all the information, he thought he might like to have a go at that as well.
Davey was thrilled that his newfound friend might join him in Karate. Both of them began to get drowsy and soon had fallen asleep. They woke up again when lunch came round and then dozed off again.
It was late afternoon, when they both woke up with a start sensing someone was in the room.
Looking round they found Principle Michaels sitting quietly waiting for them to awake.
"Hello boys I just dropped by to make sure you were both ok?" "Yes thank you sir." Carlos replied, while Davey just nodded his head.
"I know you'll hate me for this but I got your teachers to give me your homework. That way you might not fall too far behind in your classes."
Neither of them looked too happy at that news but smiled and said thank you. "Carlos I can't thank you enough for what you did to save me and Davey here, you have certainly changed your attitude to life and I admire you for that. You and Alex have proven that sometimes the system does work, producing young men out of thugs and gangsters. I am proud of you both."
Once again, Carlos went a deep red inwardly wishing that people would stop saying things like that because it might make him go soft.
Principle Michaels was just saying goodbye when the rest of the gang from school arrived to check on the patients. Kimberly was first through the door and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the school principle there.
"It's alright Kimberly I'm just leaving so you can all come on in."
"Thank you sir." Kimberly said as she moved to Carlos' bedside to give him a kiss and hug. The others stood aside to let Principle Michaels leave before trooping into the room. Following Kimberly was Alex and Matt, Jacob and Dwayne along with Gloria and Chase.
Davey was a bit overawed seeing all these people but they all came up to him either giving him a kiss on the cheek or a hug or otherwise shaking his hand. He could tell and was grateful that he was among friends. He began to get tears in his eyes when it dawned on him that he had never had so many friendly faces around for most of his life. Gloria noticed this and sat down beside his bed holding his hand giving it an occasional squeeze.
The next thought or should I say wish Davey had was, he would love to have Gloria as his mother, but knows the system will never let that happen. Once he gets out of here, it will be back into the system to be tossed aside and forgotten.
The conversation drifted back and forth mainly about what had happened at school and so on. Sally came bustling in with her bulging briefcase, but it was the person with her that brought the conversation to an abrupt halt. Dressed in a Texas Ranger uniform with the rank of Captain, was this six foot two blonde hunk (which is how Alex and Matt described him) his build showed that he worked out and was extremely fit. Sally introduced him as her son Luke and after handshakes and introductions all-round, the conversation returned to normal. Sally spoke up getting everyone's attention,
"We have a problem folks concerning Davey and where is he going to live when he leaves hospital. I don't want him going back into the system because that system as let him down so often in the past, does anyone have any suggestions. Alex spoke up right away,
"I have already spoken with Jacob's grandfather Al, sorry I didn't talk to you Jacob but you weren't around, Sally, if you're happy with the arrangement he can stay with all of us at the hotel."
He then went on to explain to Sally and Luke all about the hotel and the situation with Joey and his boys along with the judge and so on. Gloria spoke up next, "The room next to my husband and I is empty so he could move in there and we could keep an eye on him and help him get settled into his new life."
"Although I have limited jurisdiction in El Paso I will try and persuade my superiors here that this is the right thing to do."
Jacob spoke up for the first time since they walked in,
"If you have any problems Sally let me know and I will talk to Judge Harold Evans and see what he can do to help."
Upon hearing that Sally face had a big smile on it, "You people are wonderful I wish we had met up with you a few years back then all this trouble would never have happened."
For the first time Luke spoke, and in a deep rather sexy sounding voice, and all the gay guys in the room had the same thought at the same time, is he or isn't he?
"Thank you all for your help that is the first time I've seen my mother smile in a long time." Carlos asked Sally how her meeting with detective Alvarez went today,
"According to the media all of the El Paso police force is rotten at the moment but we got lucky and got the really good apple out of the barrel. He is preparing a case for the district attorney indicting Doctor Buchanan along with her son and his cohorts for rape, assault and attempted murder. Apparently there is an obscure law which if proven will make the doctor a party to everything because through manipulation she got her son to do what he did. There have been only a few cases using this law but they have all been successful."
Everyone was heartened to hear that news, "As a Texas Ranger I have the power to take over this case at any time if I think the El Paso police are not doing the right thing, plus, my director has given me the authority to do whatever it takes to sort this thing out. I will be talking to the district attorney tomorrow to make sure he understands this."
The nurse came in telling them that it is getting late and they should all leave and let their friends get some rest. Reluctantly they all said their goodbyes with Kimberley being the last to leave after giving her Carlos a big kiss and a hug.
Carlos turned to Davey smiling, "It looks as if everything is falling into place and with all your new friends around you it looks as if you will be a lot safer than you were."
"And all that is thanks to you Carlos, Thank you again, I love you dearly Carlos."
Oh shit, that took Carlos by surprise and he wasn't sure how to deal with it. In his old gang days, he'd have half-killed Davey for a remark like that but things have changed.
"Davey let's get one thing straight, that's what I am straight so stop this love business right here, right now. Kimberly is my girlfriend and I love her, do you understand."
The more he spoke the louder he got and Davey realizing he had said the wrong thing tried to make amends. "When I said what I did I didn't mean it sexually but that I love you man to man, I know we can never be an item although I wouldn't mind that either, but that will never happen. I'm sorry if I upset you and I dearly want you to be my friend."
"I'll always be your friend Davey and as I said before I'll look out for you and help you but that's as far as I'll go, understood?"
Davey shook his head agreeing with everything his newfound friend had said. They both said goodnight settling down to sleep and this was one of the few nights in his life when he didn't have a nightmare.
Next morning the hospital routine started early as normal until after breakfast when the doctor came round telling Carlos that he could go home after he had an x-ray on his arm and if it looked good.
"What about Davey, when can he go home?" "He needs to stay in a few more days at least until the stitches come out then we'll see how he's going."
"I want Carlos to stay with me until I get out of here." "I'm afraid that's not possible we need the bed."
Davey began to tear up as the doctor began to examine him, once again as soon as the doctor touched him he yelled out in pain. Carlos was at his side in an instant holding his hand telling him the doctor has to do what he is doing but it will soon be all right. Davey calmed down jumping now and again when the doctor touched a tender spot. "There's some infection in there, whatever they inserted was contaminated and it is poisoning the blood, I will give you some antibiotics to clear that up, but we will have to open you up again and clean the wound out completely."
"Please can Carlos stay with me until after the operation, please I don't want to wake up and find I've been left alone, I'm scared." Tears began falling down his cheeks as Carlos held him tight.
"All right it wouldn't do any harm for Carlos to spend another day just to be certain." "Thank you doctor."
By lunchtime, Davey had been prepped ready for theatre and as soon as he had gone Carlos was taken to X-Ray so his wound could be checked out. When Carlos got back to the room, an anxious Sally and Gloria were waiting. "Where's Davey what have they done to him?"
Carlos repeated what the doctor had told them earlier, and both ladies looked most relieved.
When Davey was wheeled back he was still very drowsy and lying on his stomach with his butt in the air.
"He'll have to stay that way for a while because it will hurt like hell if he lays any other way." The nurse explained.
Carlos explained that Davey didn't want to be left alone and Gloria said she would come in during the day when he went back to school and if he wanted to him and Kimberly could come in at night.
Sally explained that her son. Luke had spoken with the El Paso police and made it clear what was and must happen and that an arrest warrant needed to be issued against Doctor Buchanan. Slowly Davey began to come round whimpering with pain and feeling very uncomfortable. Everyone took turns comforting him and eventually he went back to sleep. While he rested, Gloria took the opportunity to tell Sally that a room was available for her and her son if they wished at the hotel.
"That's very kind of you I think my son has already made his own arrangements for now but I will take you up on your offer. I can't afford to stay too long in the hotel I'm in at the moment, but don't get me wrong I will pay for my keep."
"There's no need to worry about that for now just move in when you're ready."
"Would tonight be too soon?" Gloria indicated that it would be no problem at all.
As soon as school was over Alex and Matt brought Kimberly in. They couldn't stay long because they had work to do especially as they missed going to work last night and the night before.
Both Gloria and Sally could see that they were cramping Carlos and Kimberly's style because they both had trouble keeping their hands off each other. Both ladies said their goodbyes heading to pick up Sally's things before heading for the hotel.
As soon as they were gone the two lovers began making out and things were getting hot and steamy, but they didn't go much further in case anyone came in or Davey woke up.
As it was, Alex and Matt arrived soon after to take Kimberly home and both of them smiled when they realized what had been going on. Davey gradually woke up but was in a lot of pain, so Carlos rang the buzzer for the nurse who gave Davey some strong painkillers.
The two of them chatted for a while before sleep overtook them.
Next morning while the boys were having breakfast, Luke was waiting to see the district attorney. He wasn't very happy at the speed things were moving in regards to the arrest of Dr. Buchanan.
After something like a thirty-minute wait, he was shown into the district attorney's office. After the preliminaries of hand shaking and introductions, the DA asked what he could do for the Texas Rangers.
"Detective Alvarez prepared a report for you regarding the David Carson Rape and attempted murder, how is the case against Doctor Buchanan coming on?"
"I have read the detectives report and I disagree that there is a case against Garret Buchanan's mother."
"It appears obvious to me that she is behind this and other gay slurs and attacks at this school and she needs to be stopped."
"Well you must know more than I do Captain Hughes, plus I'm curious as to why the Texas Rangers are involved in this case which is under the jurisdiction of the El Paso police department."
"We are interested because the state of Texas currently as no confidence in the El Paso police department and for that matter the whole of the legal fraternity, including a large number of judges and yes even your very own department."
These comments shook the district attorney and for a few moments, he was at a loss for words until his temper got the better of him.
"How dare you come in here making wild accusations against El Paso's legal system? We have no intention of indicting a doctor who is held in high regard in this city, plus we are amending the charges against her son and his companions, because we feel David Carson could have misled these boys by inviting them into that washroom promising them sexual favours and the whole thing got out of hand."
It took every ounce of will power Luke had not to pummel the district attorney into the ground. "It is obvious sir that I will get no satisfaction talking to you so I must seek help and advice from a higher authority to make sure that fair and honest justice returns to El Paso."
That said he stormed out of the office slamming the door as he went.
Little did the DA know that Luke had already been granted by the Director of The Texas Rangers powers to override the El Paso judiciary to make sure the task he had been given was completed and done so quickly.
Back at the hospital, Davey was getting better all the time and with the aid of a soft cushion was able to sit up in bed. The stream of visitors was endless with Gloria bringing in clean clothes for Davey while Mrs Median did the same for Carlos, who by now, feeling much better wanted to get out, but he also wanted to make sure Davey was ok before he did so.
Meanwhile Sally was settling into the hotel, astounded by the friendliness everyone was showing her. When Gloria took her into reception, they found Helen Evans, the judge's wife sitting at the computer. After the introductions were, finished Helen gave Sally her electronic key admitting her to all parts of the hotel. Briefly, Helen also explained how Joey and the other boys had been rescued and finished up here.
"Oh dear those poor boys, if there is anything I can do to help please let me know."
Helen thanked her saying that she would pass that message on to Joey and his workers.
Gloria took her up to her room explaining how everything worked and what the meal times were. Finally Gloria left here to unpack and she had just started when her cell phone rang. It was her boss, Tom Dickerson from Armadillo,
"Hi Sally, how's things going?"
"Pretty good Tom I have my son Luke down here and he is helping me at the moment, plus the young man who saved Davey has a wonderful group of friends who are being very supportive."
"That's good to hear."
He paused and Sally sensed that he wanted to say something else that wasn't going to be good news.
"I can sense something's wrong Tom what do you have to tell me?"
"It's no good beating about the bush Sally, unless you return straight away to handle your case load which believe me is piling up, I er have been, sorry Sally I've been told to replace you."
There was silence while she took in all that Tom had said.
"Tom, I'm sorry but I can't just leave Davey here right now, otherwise he will end up back in the system and back to square one. He will definitely finish up in the group home again and be abused and I can't let that happen he has been through enough and needs a break."
She went on to explain the set up at the hotel, told him about Gloria and the rest of the people living here.
"Sally I can give you another forty-eight hours, if you're not back by then I can't promise you'll have a job when you do get back. By the way don't go anywhere near the El Paso office because your name is mud there and that Doctor Buchanan is a very powerful lady."
Sally thanked him for all he was doing and rang off. She lay down on the bed totally exhausted; wondering what was going to happen to her as well as Davey. Before dozing off and taking a little nap, she reminded herself that she was a survivor.
Davey and Carlos both decided that they couldn't put it off any longer and just had to do the homework that principle Michaels had brought in. It took Davey no time at all while Carlos struggled a bit.
"Having trouble buddy?" "Yes, maths is my worst subject." "Bring it over here and let me take a look, I'm fairly good at maths."
Carlos joined him on his bed, showing Davey what he was trying to do. Davey immediately noticed what he was doing wrong and showed him a couple of easy ways and before long the work was all done.
"Hey man your pretty good at maths, thanks for the help."
It was Davey's turn to blush this time as he mumbled, "That's ok anytime you want help just holler."
Both of them could feel an even stronger bond coming between them joining them into a close friendship. Carlos realized that this was the very first close friend he ever had outside of the gang system. All right, he had Matt, and they were good friends thanks to Alex but this was different and Jacob was more of a friendly boss than personal friend.
He thought of Kimberly and hoped that she would understand that Davey although he was gay was just a close friend and deep down he hoped she would accept him as that as well. Then he thought of course she will she accepts Alec, Matt and all the other guys.
Just about, everyone turned up that night and the room was packed with people. Gloria and Sally had brought hot dogs for everyone courtesy of the hotel kitchen and they all tucked in. Davey and Carlos especially, because they were getting sick of hospital food.
Kimberly sat on Carlos' bed holding his hand while Gloria and Sally took turns at sitting with Davey. Looking around at all his friends Davey felt a happiness, which was new to him, and suddenly he burst into tears. No one could understand what was wrong and trying to lighten the mood Jacob remarked, "I know were all a pretty ugly bunch but surely not enough to scare you to tears."
That broke the spell and Davey smiled and then began laughing along with everyone else. When things quietened down a bit, Davey said,
"Sorry about that I just felt so happy being among all you kind people; believe me they were tears of happiness, thank you, thank you all being here for me."
That brought on another round of tears but not quite as bad as the last lot.
Luke walked in and was surprised to see so many people. Sally made sure that everyone knew who he was before asking how his day had been.
"Not too good I am dealing with the biggest group of idiots possible with the district attorney's office, that doctor Buchanan is one mighty powerful woman with a lot of friends in high places. Right now I don't know what to do next." He went on to tell them about the downsizing of the charges against the boys and that the Doctor is getting off scot-free.
This made everyone in the room mad as hell, until Alex came up with a solution.
"Can't a district judge over rule a district attorney when it comes to laying charges?"
"Yes but here in El Paso I'm not on friendly terms with any district judges."
Laughing Alex, Matt, Jacob, Dwayne and Chase all said, "Maybe you're not but we are."
Luke and Sally both had puzzled looks on their faces until Alex explained about the hotel they were staying in and the position Judge Harold Evans had. "When we get home tonight I'll have a chat with him and arrange for him to see you tomorrow if that's all right with you."
"No problem thank you very much for all your help, we'll beat this thing yet." Everyone let out a mighty cheer which brought a nurse running into the room and when she saw how many people were crammed in she shouted,
"That's it, this is a hospital not a McDonalds every one out, it's past visiting time anyway." Still with smiles on their faces, everyone said goodbye to the two patients before leaving but not until Alex got Luke's cell phone number from him promising to call after he had spoken to Harold.
Next morning the same routine was taking place at the hospital and almost straight after breakfast, the doctor arrived on his rounds. He checked Carlos' x-rays telling him they looked good and he can go home but to take things easy, nothing strenuous. He walked round to check on Davey and once again Carlos had to help him calm Davey down while he checked out his butt.
"The wound looks pretty clean and the antibiotics are clearing up the infection in the blood stream."
"When can he go home doctor?"
"Maybe tomorrow or the day after." Just then Gloria walked in to the room. Davey with a pleading look in his eyes said,
"Can't I go today, I have somewhere to go instead of the home and Gloria said she would look after me, please doctor I don't want to be left here on my own."
The doctor looked again at Davey's chart, before turning to Gloria,
"Davey will need to take his medication as prescribed, plus his wound needs to be checked every few hours and if there is any sign of a discharge of pus or anything like that get him back in here right away. Would you be in a position to handle all that?"
"Yes Doctor I will keep an eye on him and look after him."
"All right then I will let you go Davey but I want you back in outpatients in three days' time for the stitches to come out, understood?"
Davey nodded thanking the doctor. It was smiles all round at that news. Carlos said that he would have to call his mother for a lift home, but Gloria said she would drop him off. Both boys, after pulling the curtains across got dressed and not long after a nurse came in with the necessary paperwork, some medication for Davey and the time of his appointment in three days' time.
Davey felt a bit wobbly when he stood up and the ache in his butt reminded him that the healing process was going to take some time. Slowly they walked out to Gloria's car and home.
Judge Harold Evans decided that his meeting with Luke would best be held at the hotel away from the courtroom, because he didn't want the DA to get word on what was taking place. The night before Alex had filled him in with all the details regarding Davey's rape and assault. Just after breakfast, Luke arrived and was shown into a room that Harold was using as an office when in the hotel. After the normal greetings had, taken place Harold invited Luke to go through everything that had happened so far, he was already up to speed with Davey's assault but wanted Luke to go through everything anyway.
When Luke had finished, Harold was disgusted with what he had heard. "I will help you anyway I can to nail these bastards."
"Firstly I need Warrants for the arrest of Dr Buchanan, her son Garrett and his four henchmen on charges of attempted murder, rape, deprivation of liberty, indecent assault and indecent assault. If you can think of any others put them down on the warrants as well."
Harold thought for a minute before speaking, "We might be on dangerous ground charging Doctor Buchannan on all those charges so I suggest you just arrest her for the attempted murder charge. The other things that happened may be harder to prove. Now what about the case worker here in El Paso, from what we have heard she is on the same side as the doctor regarding gays."
"Yes, but charges against her would be difficult to prove. I am going to see the lady in question, talk to her and try a little bluff. I'll tell her that if she helps us to get the doctor behind bars no charges will be laid against her and if she plays ball I will leave her alone."
Smiling Harold said, "Perhaps is best if I don't know too much about your methods, so we'll leave it at that. If you call into my court after lunch I will have the warrants ready for you."
Luke thanked him for his help and got up to leave, just as he reached the door Harold called out to him, "By the way, your mother appears to be a kind caring person, will she be going back to Amarillo when things settle down here?"
"I'm not sure the way things are going at the moment she may not have a job to go to."
"Indeed, well tell her not to worry about that something's bound to turn up." He smiled at Luke giving him a sly wink. Luke smiled back but left the room puzzled at what the judge was getting at.
He took the elevator back down to the foyer just in time to see Davey come in with Gloria. Davey was limping and you could see he was in pain when he walked.
"It's good to see you on the mend and out of hospital Davey."
He thanked Luke for the kind words as the Captain left. Gloria told him to sit down and wait while she went off to find Helen Evans so he could get an electronic key for his room and the hotel.
Looking around he was surprised to see just how big the hotel was, plus it had a friendly feel about it. Hard to describe but Davey felt as if he had come home at last, home to somewhere he could be happier than he has ever been in his life. While he had never had anything to do with religion mainly because he had never been told anything about the subject, but right now he had a strange feeling come over him, feeling compelled to talk to God. He closed his eyes saying to himself, `dear God I don't know anything about you but if you have helped in way with finding these lovely people to help me I thank you. I hope my days of pain and suffering are over because I don't think I can stand much more. I've thought a few times lately that I would be better off not being here and that the world would be better off without me. Thank you for your help'.
He didn't realize that he had been talking out aloud and that Gloria and Helen had returned hearing every word.
With tears in their eyes they both rushed over to comfort him, taking him in their arms.
"Davey don't ever think things like that ever again, you're with friends now who will look after you and keep you safe."
Nothing more was said as Helen pulled away going behind the desk to her computer to prepare the electronic key for Davey.
Once all that was setup Gloria took Davey up in the elevator to the family floor, and the vacant room next to hers and her husband Andy. Davey was amazed that he would have his own room complete with bathroom, "Thank you." He stammered, "I've never had a room of my own for such a long time and this one's even got its own bathroom and a TV."
Laughing Gloria said. "Make yourself at home because if I have my way you will always have your own room from now on. Right now it's getting close to lunchtime so let's head down to the dining room and eat, you must be starving after that hospital food."
The dining room was just about empty because not many people were home during the day.
Meanwhile Carlos was also happy to be home and his mother cooked him a big lunch more than he could possibly eat.
"I'm so proud of you my son, helping that poor boy and then saving the principles life. Your father and I have never been happier that you look as if you are finally away from the gang scene."
"Don't keep on about it mum it was nothing." Carlos was wishing that people would stop harping on at what he had done. After lunch he headed out towards the school to meet Kimberly and the guys when they came out. He stood out in the street looking across the stadium at the massive brick building in front of him. Suddenly a tiny voice next to him said, "It's a big building but I think it's going to be a good school at least for me."
Looking round he saw Davey standing next to him.
"What on earth are you doing here?" He asked.
"Gloria brought me down to see principle Michaels about my returning to school." "I thought you would have had a few more days off before heading back, the doctor said you could."
"During the day there's hardly anyone in the hotel and it would be almost as boring as the hospital so I'm coming back to school tomorrow." "Are you sure you can handle it so soon?"
"I'm feeling a bit nervous standing here looking at that big ugly looking building but I hope I'll be ok. Is it still all right if I hang out with you guys tomorrow?"
"Of course it is, we wouldn't want it any other way, you're one of the group from now on in and don't be surprised if some of the guys don't try and find you a nice boyfriend." As soon as he said it, Carlos wondered if he had said the right thing. Davey's bottom lip began trembling and tears welled up in his eyes. Putting his arm around him Carlos said, "Sorry I didn't mean to upset you they'll only start looking when you're ready and not before, I was only joking, forgive me?"
Davey nodded, "of course I forgive you I shouldn't get upset like that it's just that I'd be no good with a boyfriend right now anyway."
He paused looking at Carlos with a cross between love and hero worship in his eyes. "Are you still interested in joining a karate club?"
"Yes, I've been thinking about it since we talked in the hospital and reckon I'd like to get involved in something like that."
"If you like I'll start looking around for a club that we can join."
"Suits me buddy, here's Gloria looking for you so I'll catch you later."
Before walking away from each other they touched knuckles smiling as they parted. Davey's final thoughts as he watched Carlos walk towards the school. God I wish he was gay.

Writers' corner,
Rebirth is a good title for this story because young Davey has had a rotten miserable life until now, but hopefully that is all going to change. This story will also demonstrate how much Carlos has changed from his gang days. As the story progresses a few more characters will arrive on the scène, but it's early days yet.
A big thank you to Jacob for all the help he is giving and also a big thank you to Ed. With my stories I haven't used an editor preferring to do it myself but with the increased workload writing three stories Jack had offered to help and I thank him for that.
Jacob will also be helping me because being an `Aussie' my knowledge of Texas and especially the legal system is non-existant.
Check out the Rebirth site because Jacob as already began adding some bios and pictures and more will be added soon.
Please let us know how we are doing
I will be publishing every Wednesday alternating my stories so next week it will be Michael & Robert, then Adventures of Cliff & Derek followed the next week by Rebirth so you will get a chapter for each story every three weeks.
