Chapter Three
Ring! 'Huh! Is that the bell already?' Wow, I was day- dreaming during the whole class period. As I was getting up to leave, packing up my books and stuff, I felt a tap on my shoulder as I turned around and I heard a gasp leave my lungs. It was David.
"Hey... You are Kayden, right. My name is David." He said in a soft baritone voice.
"Yeah that's right Kayden Strands nice to meet you," I said smiling softly.
"I noticed that you weren't paying attention to Mr. Simon as much as you usually do.," he said.
I smiled bashfully "yeah I have a lot of things going on in my head this morning for some reason."
"Well, we have a test next class over what he just talked about this morning, do you want today's notes I can let you borrow them and then you can come to my place this afternoon to give them back and we can hang out a bit."
I was stunned, he asks me to his house the first time we meet "uh sure let me call and talk to my dad and let him know at lunch and I'll meet you after school"
"Okay, meet me at the flag pole after school then we'll walk to my place"
"Okay, see you then" I said as I ran to get to my next class, which was on the other side of the school.
My next period was Political Science, it is a college credit class and I am taking it with a whole bunch of juniors and seniors as a freshman, so I guess you could call me a nerd but I am not a stereotypical nerd, I love sports. I love swimming and equestrian sports... well ok so maybe I am a bit of a nerd, a gay nerd at that!
As I was taking notes in my political science class, a pass came for me to go to the principal's office. 'Hmm, I wonder what this is for...' Because I am a good student, I have never been in trouble. When I got there, the secretary smiled and led me to the office. Inside I found my dad, the principal Mrs. Harris and a man I did not know. I started to get worried and my dad sensed the change in my demeanor.
"Kayden its ok, I promise, this is Professor Holt, and he is one of the advisors at one of the top high schools in the state."
"Good morning Kayden" he said shaking my hand.
"Good morning, may I ask what all this is about?" I asked still apprehensive about the arrangement.
"Well as your father says I am an advisor for one of the top high schools in the state." Professor Holt started "According to your recent test scores you made a perfect score on your PSAT and your ninth grade TAKS test, were commended for all subjects on the TAKS and you a in the running for merit scholarships. Congratulations!"
"Wow" was all I could say. I was literally speechless.
"Well that is impressive," my dad said.
"Now there is actually one more student that has earned the same honors but I will tell him after you leave. Now the offer my school has offered you is quite simple. I have to ask you a few questions; would you be willing to go to an all boy's school for the rest of your high school education?"
"I guess, I mean I don't have many friends here so no one will miss me."
"Good, good now this school is a private, invitation only school it is called Irvine's School for Boys and we are giving you and the other boy a full tuition paid scholarship to our school."
"Oh my gosh" I gasped "I've heard of that school and I have always wanted to be part of it you guys have one of the best boys choir in the country!"
"Yes sir, we do" professor Holt beamed.
"Dad, dad can I go please?" I asked my excitement growing with every passing moment.
"Absolutely, this is a wonderful opportunity for you." He said
"Excellent! You will have to sort out your grades and paperwork with your teachers today and tomorrow then we need you at the school for a ceremony Thursday evening," Professor Holt added.
"Well, congratulations Kayden, and Mr. Strands you must be so proud!" Mrs. Harris said. My dad could only nod yes he was so happy.
After I said my thanks to Professor Holt, I was given a pass back to class. As I was walking out Mrs. Harris told the secretary to call David Harper to the office and get his dad to come up to the school. 'Holy crap! Is David the other boy Professor Holt was talking about?' I just about fainted.
