Don't say you ever loved me

Chapter Two

I went out of the net bar with him, happy and exhausted. It was 2:30 AM, and I had realized that I had indeed broken my curfew, something I just said but not really wanted to do.

With the chilly spring breeze passing through, I was trembling and put my crossed arms in front of my chest. I walked ahead of him, heading for the dorm.

"Hey, dude. Where are you going?" A voice from the rear.

"Do...rm, of course." Looking back, I said with a quiver out of the chilly wind.

"Kidding, aren't you?"

"No, what?" I was not sure why he said that.

"You can't go back to the dorm building after 11:30PM. And if you really want to, just wake up the old and cross-tempered gate keeper. You know that."

"Ahhhhhh..." I stumbled, eyes wide-open.

That was one year ago. It was my birthday and I invited several pals out for a dinner party. Anyway, I was only too excited enjoying beers and delicacy to remember the time, and so were the other dickheads. We fumbled and intertwined and dragged ourselves back in front of the dorm building, knocking heavily on the closed gate, gabbling something I was not able to remember. Impatiently we waited and waited, and, after it seemed like a year, some noisy could be finally heard. Then the gate was open, and there he was-the gate keeper, staring at us and yelling:" You imps are two fucking hours late! Scoot off to where you crib, and I am sure there won't be a second." Though not very clear-minded, I was aware how tough the man was.

"So what're we gonna do?" I asked.

"We better go to a all-time open cafe." He suggested.

"Well, I bet you are right." I guessed that's the only choice since I didn't want to get myself into trouble again even if he would probably remember who I was.

We sat in one YongHe beancurd jelly chain store, business 24 hours round. Actually, I've only been to YongHe (meaning peace forever in Chinese) once and I don't think I like the food there. Speaking of food, I was starving then.

"My treat, lemme know what you want to order." He was smiling as he handed me a piece of menu from the table. The chain store is self-service and no waiters or waitresses will come over to wait for your orders.

I looked up and noticed he was gazing at me, with a most shining smile. My heart beat fast when I glanced at his penetrating eyes that were just as beautiful as the lake water in the spring, and were deep enough to be so inscrutable.

"Well" I took the menu and read it through quickly. The types of the food there were all the most traditional Chinese, and I found my favorite beef-noodles. "Here, this one." I signaled him to come closer by raising the menu and presenting it to him.

His face moved a little closer and I could felt some sort of fragrant shampoo-like smell mixed with the smoking of cigarette in the net-bar. I just adored the smell and wanted to stay like this a little longer.

"Okay... But I would say I don't like noodles, I will have a bowl of beancurd jelly with sugar in it." He is a South-China boy and would never like noodles as we Northerners do.

As he rose and to the counter to pay for the food, I watched him in silence and began to think back what had happened to me tonight from the moment I met him, on the road, and to now.

"Your noodles." He cut me off from my meditation.

"Oh, thanks! I will treat you next time." At least I could finally find a decent excuse to be with him again.

He smiled with no more words and began to focus on his snack.

It was an intricate smile and I wondered what it meant. Was it a polite refusal or he just acquiesced but didn't know whether it was possible?

I was tired like shit, and after I finished my noodles, I took a nap on the table.

It seemed a long time had passed when I was awaken by his gentle rock, feeling even more exhausted and aching all over my body, especially the neck, where it was extremely sore and acutely hurt. I caressed my aching neck as I said to him:" Leave?"

He nodded.

As he was standing he paused and asked:" Want something to eat?"

"I better not. I just feel very sick. Thanks." My stomach sank.

Then he signed me to leave with me and we both walked out of the place where "we spent the night together."
