Dreams and Satin Sheets

Chapter 3:

When I awoke the next morning I was slightly disoriented. I remembered Josh coming home with me and me sleeping with me but beside me the bed was cold and empty.

I resigned myself to the fact that he had left earlier that morning but looking at the clock I saw that it was 7 a.m. What would posses him to leave this early I will never know so I put on my fluffy white robe and went downstairs to find something to have for breakfast. As I descended the stairs the smell of bacon touched my nostrils which only served to make me hungrier and more confused,

When I reached the door to the kitchen I gazed upon the beauty standing in front of my stove wearing boxers and a wife beater while singing softly to the bacon. I smiled realizing what his intentions were and decided that it would be more fun to help him.

Snaking my arms around his waist I asked softly, "What smells so good?"

"Hey, what are you doing up this early I was gonna bring you breakfast in bed. " He said while turning to face me.

"I always wake up this early, and when you weren't in bed with me, I came to look for you."

"Well breakfast is almost ready so go have a seat at the table and we can eat. " He said.

I kissed his cheek and walked over to the cabinet to get out the plates and utensils we would need and set the table. I also poured two cups of coffee and retrieved the cream and sugar for my coffee. All the while I just kept thinking that I could really get used to this.

We sat eating quietly and talking about nothing in particular. We were content just to be in one another's company. The meal was more than I usually had for breakfast but it was wonderful just the same. After we had finished eating we loaded the dishwasher and started it then went out onto the patio.

"So, what time do you have to be at work today?" He asked while staring at the sun that had just risen.

"Tonight I am scheduled to pull the midnight shift. I am gonna be tired as hell tomorrow because working 12 hours really takes it out of ya. "

"Jeez, What time do you go in?" He asked again.

"I work seven p.m. till seven a.m." I replied.

"Ohh, well you should not be up this early having to work that long tonight" he said while moving closer to me.

"Yeah I suppose you are right" I said as he pulled me into a warm embrace.

"Then let's go back to bed" he said as he began dragging me back into the house.

Leaving everything we ascended the stairs and went back into the bedroom. We crawled back into bed and cuddled up to one another. I lay there and listened as Josh's breathing evened out and then untangled myself from his arms. I walked out and pulled the door almost closed.

I went back downstairs and picked up the cordless phone from the living room and dialed the familiar number.

After a couple of rings the cheerful receptionist answered the phone.

"Emergency Room, how may I help you?" She asked.

"Yeah, may I speak with Dr. Evans please?" "Whom shall I say is calling?" She asked.

"Tell him this is Scott. "

"Hold one moment please." I was placed on hold and listened as the recording told me of the ever-growing list of procedures and features of the Hospital.

"Scott, what's up?" Rick asked.

"I just wanted to thank you once again for setting me and Josh up He is the greatest." I told him excitedly.

He giggled and then said, "I take it things are going well?"

"Yeah we went on a date last night and it was absolute perfection. He spent the night last night and made breakfast for me this morning." I answered.

"Ohhh, so did someone get lucky?" He asked and I could hear the smile in his voice.

"No, I am not going to rush this. Whatever happens will happen in its own time." I stated flatly.

"Oh ok, well I suppose that's your decision to make." He said.

"Yeah, well I think it's for the best. I won't be seeing you at work today; I am scheduled to pull a midnight." I said while suppressing a yawn.

"Well you better get some more sleep." He said in a motherly tone.

"I intend to, Josh is waiting upstairs." I said grinning.

"Well you go back to your man and I'll go back to my patients. Have a good day Scott." He said.

"Ok, you too. I'll talk to you later." I said while yawning.

"Ok, bye." He said laughing.

"Bye." I said ending the call and putting the phone back on charge.

I returned to find Josh snuggled up to my pillow. I smiled at the sight and then walked over to the bed and replaced the pillow with my body. While holding Josh I drifted off to sleep.

I must have been more tired than I thought because when I finally woke, the clock read 5:30 p.m. Once again the space next to me was unoccupied. I took a quick shower and dressed in scrubs. I walked downstairs and into the kitchen. Lying on the bar was a note that read:

Baby,

I woke up before you and did not have the heart to wake you. You are so cute when you are asleep. I had to go home and get some things done around the house. I wish I could have stayed longer but some other time perhaps. I put you a little something in the fridge. Have a good night at work and call me sometime tomorrow.

Love, Josh

P.S. Thanks for the best 24 hours of my life.

I smiled at the note and walked to the fridge to see what awaited me. On the first shelf sat a brown paper bag. I opened it and saw that Josh had packed me a lunch for tonight. I almost cried at the simple gesture. Making a mental note to repay the favor, I grabbed the sac and my keys and walked out the door to work.

To Be Continued...

Hey there people, sorry it took so long to get this one out but finals, moving, and work are really taking up my time. I will try to do better. I appreciate feedback and will try to answer whenever possible. I apologize to those of you who wrote me after the last chapter for not responding. I promise to try to do better. Until later.

Eric.
