Pete woke with a start. His cheeks were damp from the silent tears that flowed from his eyes. The sheets were a tangled sweaty mess. As his heart beat slowed Pete looked around his room. There were still boxes in the corners the needed to be unpacked. Knowing he would get no more sleep, Pete turned the bedside lamp on. He stretched and made his way over to one of the boxes.
He and his older brother had moved to the large three story house the week before. The house had belonged to their mother's parents. Neither of the boys had ever met their mother's parents. All their mother had ever said was they had died before either were born. Pete attempted to shift a clearly heavy box. With a grunt he gave up his slender frame was not going to shift it. Rather than give up he decided to unpack it where it was. The contents of the box were books. The books weren't his, they had been his mothers. Seeing them forced the all too new memories of his mother and father's death.
Rob entered his brother's room. He had not expected to find his little brother sat staring into space holding one of their mother's texts. "Pete" Rob called softly, not wanting to startle his brother. Pete looked over at his brother sadly. "You should give these Nichole. She will make better use of them" Pete wiped the tears away from his face. "It's not your fault", Rob said as he pulled his brother into a tight hug.
Pete wanted to believe his brother. But in truth it was at least partially his fault that their parents were dead. Their mother had wanted to train him as he had started to form a circle. It was supposed to be a fun day. What it ended up being was anything but. Out of nowhere enemies had appeared. His mother and her circle had formed up around them. Pete didn't see it happen, however he felt it. His parents had died followed quickly by his two best friends. He couldn't remember much after losing his friends. Rob had told him that he and Nichole had found him surrounded by everyone else. The most remarkable thing was that he didn't have a scratch on him.
Pete looked up at his brother. "It was. At least in part", Rob looked at his brother sadly there was nothing he could do to lift the guilt that Pete carried with him. "The others get here today don't they"? Pete forced a small smile and cheerful voice. Rob nodded, "What time?" Pete asked as he stood. "About lunch time, Nichole will be here shortly", Pete nodded. "I'm heading for a shower". Rob watched his little brother he was amazed at the strength the sixteen year old showed.
"Rob, Rob", a loud female voice called up the stairs, apparently Nichole had arrived. As he went down stairs Rob was surprised to see that Nichole was not alone. Alice was with her, the quiet blonde was still looking up the stairs. "He is showering", Rob answered the unasked question. "Is he sleeping better now", Alice asked softly. Rob shook his head, "Maybe school will help". Rob hoped so. His brother had closed almost everyone out since the death of their parents.

Derik grunted as he raised the earth beneath his feet trying to get to his sparring partner. Simon laughed at his friends attempts. Simon was an air elemental and was currently floating on a stream of air. Derik glared at his friend. Derik was an earth elemental and was having no luck reaching his friend. Changing tactics he decided to raise the earth directly below his friend disrupting his air stream. Once Simon was grounded Derik had him.
Simon tried to pull himself out of the earth that he now found himself encased in. "You struggle and I may turn it to stone" Derik smirked at his friend. Simon hung his head in defeat. There was a loud laugh from behind Derek. Brendon and Jim walked up to their friends. "Are you planning on letting him go", Derik pretended to think about it before he released Simon. Simon dusted himself off glaring at the smirking Derik. "You can't turn it to stone anyway", before Derik could respond Brandon spoke loudly. "Well this is the year boys. We are strong in our elements a fifth has got to be out there for us". The four boys all sighed. They wouldn't be able to master their elements without a fifth to complete their circle.
"What do you think she will be like" Jim asked randomly. Each boy thought for a moment before responding with hot. This caused all of them to laugh. "Not that that matters", they all laughed again the four had been friends since primary school. Jim waited before going on. "She is going to have to be pretty strong. I know of other elementals that aren't as strong as us and they are already in a full circle." The other three nodded their agreement. They had all met other elementals and circles and had found themselves to be the stronger. "I hope we find her soon", Simon sighed the others all nodded in agreement. At seventeen they were all ready to form a full circle.

Pete sat reading one of his mother's books. Nichole had refused to take them. The book had thus far outlined the basics of forming a circle. A circle consisted of five people. There were the four elementals one of fire, earth, air and water. Each elemental had the ability to manipulate their element. To complete a circle there was the need for a fifth. A fifth had the ability to manipulate all the elements. Generally a fifth was weaker than an elemental in any given element. This was until the formation of a circle. The forming of a circle caused all in it to be more powerful. It also meant that the elementals could now use stronger skills. Such as the Earth elemental having the ability to change dirt to stone or glass to sand.
"What you reading", Alice sat next to Pete on his bed. Pete showed her the book, she just nodded. "Nichole should have just taken the books". Alice laughed at Pete's outburst. She had been there three days ago when Pete had tried to give the books to Nichole. "She's right you know". Pete frowned at Alice, "She right about what?" He asked, Alice just smiled, "I'm not forming my own circle". Alice just shrugged as she got up to leave. She knew as well as the others that there was no point talking to Pete about it.
It would have been past midnight when Pete's door quietly opened. Jack stood and watched the slender sixteen year old. He turned to leave when he heard Pete speak softly. "Don't go", Jack could hear the pleading in Pete's voice. "We don't have to do anything. I just wanted you to hold me". Jack was torn he loved Alice, and yet he still wanted to protect Pete. He wanted to make Pete feel better. "It's fine", Alice spoke neither Jack or Pete had noticed Alice enter the room. Jack looked at his partner, Alice just nodded.
No sooner had Jack climbed into the bed was Pete snuggled right up to him. "I'm sorry little one I can't be here for you the way you want". Pete looked up at Jack's eyes and smiled softly for him. "It's ok, I just wanted to be held". Jack pulled Pete closer to him. It was one of the best night's sleep Pete had, had in a long time.

Derik knocked on Simon's door. The four boys had always walked to school together. Simon was quickly at the door and out. The pair were joined by Brendon and Jim a street away. The four went to the local state high school. All were in year twelve and more than ready to finish school at the end of the year. As elementals they would never go to university. Rather they would join the guild. The guild did however require that they have high academics. So the four found themselves in high academic classes.
It was Brendon who saw the fifth in the car park. She would have been about twenty. She was tall and slender with bright red hair. She was there with a big elemental with black hair and blue eyes. "I wonder who they dropped off". Derik looked over and shrugged. It was clear to the four boys that whoever had been dropped off was already in the school grounds. "I hope it's a cute fifth", was Simons response.
...........................................
Pete sat in his form room. In his last school it had been called care. The school was a basic run of the mill state school. It had different blocks for different subjects. A hall for assembles that doubled as the indoor courts. It also had its own swimming pool. The school was located in a good area. As well as the ovals. It was a very normal school. Form was very basic, the roll was called and time tables were handed out with student diaries. It was then off to the obligatory first day assembly. By the time the assembly was over the first period was nearly over. The school worked on a fixe period schedule of seventy minutes each. There was a half our little lunch and an hour big lunch for the entire school. All in all very average for a state school.
It was as he was waiting to enter the year eleven English class that a year eleven girl noticed him. "Are you lost", Pete frowned for a moment before he realised why she would say that. Pete was short for his age as well as being slim. That combination often made people think he was around fourteen. "I don't think so this is year eleven English". The girl looked a little surprised but nodded. "It's ok I know I'm short and don't really look sixteen. My names Pete". Pete held his hand out to shake hers. "Tiffany or Tiff as most people call me". Pete smiled as did Tiff, the pair entered the class room together.
For a first day it had gone well, in Pete's opinion. What made it good was Tiff. Tiff had the overly friendly personality of a larger girl. Although it was clear to Pete that Tiff had lost weight, the girl retained the personality of a big girl. "Is it alright if I come around your place this afternoon"? Pete was a little surprised by her request but nodded. Tiff smiled, "Do you live far". Pete smiled at her enthusiasm, "No about twenty minutes walk". Tiff smiled and indicated for him to lead the way.
..........................................
Derik was surprised to see a short slender guy walking off with Tiff. "What you watching"? Brendon asked as he walked up to Derik. Derik pointed at the guy with Tiff. "It looks like Tiff has found a new friend". Brendon looked over to where Derik was pointing. A smile formed across his face as he watched the slender girl walking with Tiff. "She looks cute, is she a fifth", Derik couldn't hold it in he burst out laughing. Brendon glared at his friend in confusion. "Sorry Bren, it's just that little one is a guy". Bren looked again and frowned, "must be an elemental though, it explains Tiff's absents all day". Derik nodded his agreement they had all noticed and commented on the fact that Tiff had not been around.
"What we looking at", Jim asked. Both Bren and Derik pointed to Tiff and her friend. Jim looked at the pair and smiled. "I'm guessing air; he's too small to be anything else". Jim was shoved to the ground by a rather pissed looking Simon. "He's not air", Simon glared at Jim. "I'm not sure what he is. I couldn't get anything from him when I brushed past them earlier. Tiff is stronger though". The four teen watched the younger pair walk away each lost in their thoughts.
..............................................
Tiff watched Pete closely as they walked. She maintained a constant chatter a skill she had perfected over time. She had tried a number of times to move the conversation in the direction of being Elementals. However each time she got close Pete somehow managed to change the subject. "Well here we are", Pete spoke softly. Tiff gasped she knew the house. The house belonged to a long line of fifths. "Your mum is a fifth", Pete shrugged uncomfortably, as he watched his new friend. "Do you still want to come in"? Tiff just nodded.
"Hay little one how was your first day", Nichole called from the kitchen. Pete lead Tiff to the kitchen, he smiled at Nichole. "It went well, this is Tiff she an Earth", Nichole nodded. Tiff watched the pair in stunned silence. Firstly she had never been this close to a fifth. And it was clear that the beautiful red head was a Fifth. Secondly Pete had already identified her element. "Are you alright", Nichole asked with concern. Pete gave her a small smile and nodded. "Where's Rob, he could show Tiff a few things". Nichole looked at Tiff and smiled at the clearly nervous girl. "He and the others went out, and wouldn't say why". Pete nodded and was about to head up stairs. Before he could take Tiff to his room Nichole grabbed him and pulled him into a tight hug. Tiff could see that Nichole said something to Pete. Pete's reaction was to smile sadly and nod.
Tiff was impressed with Pete's room. It had a queen size bed pushed into a corner a computer desk and a large free standing cupboard and chest of draws. There was another door that she assumed lead to a bathroom. Apart from that the walls were bare except for a large book case which was filled. Tiff's eyes were drawn to the book case. "You can look and use the ones that you would find useful". Pete spoke softly as he nervously stood by his desk.
Tiff frowned, however could not resist looking at the books. There were five sections, one for each element and the largest for a fifth. "It's you isn't it. I heard my parents talking about the death of a circle and partial circle with only one survivor. You're the survivor aren't you? Pete nodded not trusting his voice. It was hard to hear someone talk about your tragedies in such a calm way. Tiff turned and saw that Pete was close to tears. Her eyes went wide and she exclaimed, "Pete I'm so sorry I shouldn't have spoken so". Pete tried to smile to put her at ease, "It's ok. I didn't tell you so how were you to know". Tiff walked over to him and gave him a hug.
It was a short time later, both had calmed down. "So what's it like? Being part of a circle I mean", Tiff asked. Pete got a faraway look about him as he thought about how things had been. "It was amazing. You feel so close to each other. But you should know that you're already part of a circle." Tiff grinned it was true she was part of a circle she had a cousin that was a fifth. "True but it's going to be a few years before we can form properly". Pete nodded his understanding. As was often the case a circle was often formed with one or two family members. Nichole had only won Rob, because he could sleep with her among other things.
"Are you looking to form a new circle, I know a few elementals that are looking for a fifth". Pete hesitated before responding. "I know I felt them at school today, so powerful and without a fifth it's incredible". Tiff was a little surprised that Pete had sensed the four guys. "I don't want them to know about me. To them I'm nothing more than a weak air elemental". Tiff raised an eyebrow. "Please Tiff just keep what I am to yourself for now", Pete looked at her with such pleading eyes. Tiff sighed and nodded, "Fine I won't tell them".
