Chapter 10: ...The Flames Begin
"That's not what we were writing, I swear!" Hannah pleaded, looking from her parents to the Principal, " We were going to wri..."
"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I'm gonna have to suspend you." Principal Common said sadly, " You too Mr. Kyle."
"Dammit." Harry swore, looking at Mr. and Mrs. Terrance, " I mean, darnit."
Principal Common looked at his watch, " It's pretty early, so I say we meet again later today or tomorrow." he smiled weakly.
"Thank you." Laura Terrance, Hannah and Marco's mother said, " She will be in some very serious trouble."
Hannah shrugged angrily and watched as Harry and Principal Common left. She then turned to her parents, who looked at her in shock, " Oh boy..." she said to herself.
"So, Shakespeare is sad?" Ballard asked, " Why? There's like, a million women in the world, ya know."
I looked at him.
"Or maybe you don't know." he chuckled.
"It's more about the woman." I sighed, " He could have just gone out and done things, but he wanted her."
" What's so special about her?" he asked.
"I don't know. I wasn't alive then." I replied.
"Right." he said, " So, do you guys just...how do you decide who's on top?"
"What?" I asked.
"I mean, with girls and guys, there's one penis. How do you decide who's on the penis?" he asked.
"On the penis? Why are you asking me this?" I asked.
"I just wanna know so I never send the wrong signals." he said quickly.
"Believe me. Assholes are not attractive." I said. He fixed his mouth to say something, " Not how I meant it." I said, standing, " Are we done here?"
"Sure." he smirked, grabbing his book, " I've got practice anyways."
"Maybe you'll actually not get tackled." I smirked.
"Funny." he said, walking away.
"A little bonding?" Davis asked.
"Little, very little." I smiled, " Shouldn't you be on the way to practice?"
"No." he said, " Well, yeah, but it can wait."
"Aww, makes me feel all special." I chuckled, " So, did you hear. There was vandalism. My locker again. I still don't know who cleaned my locker the first time."
Davis paused, " I'm sure you'll find out one day." he smiled.
"I hope so." I said quickly.
"So, you and me after practice." Davis asked.
"Sure." I said, slinging my backpack over my back, " I'm going to order out."
Davis looked up at the clock, " Crap. I'm late." he said, " Coach is gonna roast me."
"Sounds sexy." I smirked, " Later."
Davis laughed and rushed off to practice. As he left, he passed Marco, who was coming into the Library. Marco took the time to give Davis an odd look and walk over to me.
"Hey." Marco said kind of indifferently.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"What do you mean?" Marco asked.
I sighed, " Can you be more obvious?" i asked.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked.
"We did things that I wouldn't tell me parents about. I get it, you thought we'd be together after we...but I can't. I'm in love with someone else." I said quickly.
"Do you ever get over yourself?" Marco said angrily, " The world does not revolve around you!"
"Then what's your deal." I asked.
"I can't even believe...it was a mistake. One that I shouldn't have made." Marco said, looking over and noticing Julie walk through the door. I looked over to her too. Before I could think, he walked over and kissed her passionately. I just stood there, a bit angry.
"Oh gosh, Marco, what was that?" Julie asked.
"Will you go out with me tonight?" Marco asked.
"Yeah." Julie said happily.
I frowned and rushed past them, not bothering to say bye to either of them.
In the Locker Room, Marco and Davis kept their distance. There was an obvious amount of tension between them, just aching to be let out.
"What's with the tension." Ballard asked Davis, who was suiting up.
"Whaddya mean?" Davis asked.
On the other side of the room...
"There's obviously something going on between you two." Vincent said, looking to the other side of the room.
Marco shrugged, " He stays on his side of the room, I stay on mine. We win State." he said angrily.
"If you say so." Vincent said quickly putting on his gear and walking away.
Marco got up to walk out, then stopped when Davis stepped in his path, " What's your deal?" he asked.
"What do you mean?" Marco asked.
"Lately, you've been acting different toward Adaen and staring me down...more." Davis said impatiently.
"No I haven't." Marco said, " What? Worried that I might steal him?"
"Naw, he likes men." Davis said.
"Move out of my way before I move you." Marco said.
"Stop being a dick and maybe I will." Davis said angrily.
"He's been my best friend longer than you've tried to get into his pants." Marco spat, " So I can do what I want."
Marco made to walk off, but Davis grabbed his arm and twirled him around. Marco swung and hit Davis, causing him to stumble back, then they went at it! A blow here and a blow there before they were separated by the team members who had stuck around.
"What the hell is going on in here?!" Coach Rihmore said angrily, " Everbody on the field! You're leaving late tonight, ladies."
Hannah tried to explain to her parents that it wasn't what it looked like, that she and Harry had been trying to do something good and not hurt Adaen. Finally she had given up and went to her room. After a while, she decided to try again.
"Mom." Hannah said, " Dad, I swear. It wasn't what you think it was. I love Adaen."
"Lately you and Adaen haven't exactly been on the same page, you've been having this little rift and I think maybe you should think before you give up a friendship that you've had and valued for so long." Laura said angrily.
"But we've talked since then." Hannah cried angrily.
"I haven't seen you two together." Michael, her father, said.
"That's because...Ugh! We have, I promise." Hannah said quickly.
"Look, Hannah, lately you've been doing things that just aren't you. I don't know why you're doing them, but you have to stop. Me and your father are here for you, as well as your brother." Laura said, " I want you to do all your chores, no t.v., no telephone, no visitors, and you're grounded."
"Mom." Hannah said.
"No, now go." Laura said angrily.
Hannah sighed and walked back to her room.
As I walked to my locker, I stopped as I saw Harry wiping my locker off. I was confused when I first saw him, having known him forever. I walked up to him and tapped his shoulder.
He turned to me, " Hey Adaen." he said quickly.
"Why are you cleaning my locker?" I asked, " Shouldn't the person who did this be...doing this?"
"He is. Or half of them is." Harry said. I guess my face changed cause he put his hands up, " Before you punch me, here." he said, handing me a piece of paper.
I looked at the piece of paper, my face burning in anger. I read the words and smiled, " You were gonna write this on my locker?" I asked.
"No." Harry said, " I was helping Hannah write this on your locker."
"Where is Hannah?" I asked.
"We got caught and she got in trouble. So did I, but they decided that I should clean the locker, then go for my suspension." Harry shrugged, " But I'm not bitter about it or anything."
"So, you got in trouble because you were helping Hannah try and get back on my good side?" I asked, " That's...I'll fix it."
"Thanks." he smiled, " But the damage is done."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Because of this, I'm cut from the football team." Harry said, finishing up, " Done."
"Good as new." I said, smiling at my locker.
"It'll never be as good as it used to be. Later." he said, leaving.
"Later." I said, thinking about what he just said and he was right. Nothing was ever going to be simple again, everything had changed. But...there was a but, a big but, nothing had to be the same ever again.
I found myself walking around the locker room. I was kind of invigorated, kind of scared, and kind of nervous. More nervous than anything. I walked quickly and avoided looking at any of them. When I was halfway in, I bumped into somebody.
"Hey, watch..." Bradley stopped. He sneered, " What are you doing in here?!"
"What?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
"No homos." Bradley said, causing a few guys to laugh, " Come to get a little peek, faggot."
I clenched my fist close to my side, " Look, I'm gonna tell you this one time, take your hand out of your own ass before you talk." I said angrily.
"Excuse me, but Mr. Lawerence, what are you doing in here?" Coach Rihmore asked at the door of his office, " This is the team locker room."
"I need to talk to you." I said, walking into his office.
"Probably trying to seduce the Coach, hope he knows the coach likes pussy." Bradley chuckled.
"Yeah, the real thing, not boy pussy." Ballard joked, " Right, Davis."
"Yeah." Davis said unsuredly, " Who'd want that?" he said, looking at Marco, then at the floor.
Marco's anger hit its boiling point and he ran at Davis, slamming him against the locker! As they fell over the bench, they fought, exchanging punches and wildly.
Inside the Office:
"Look, Coach, I believe them. They wouldn't do something like that." I said quickly.
Coach rocked back in his chair, " So you think it was a false suspension?" he asked.
"Yeah. They wouldn't do that." I said.
"So, what do you want me to do?" Coach Rihmore asked.
"I want you to let Harry back on the team." I said quickly, " Please. I mean, Harry didn't do anything bad anyways and..."
"He broke into the school..."
"And...Look, you're a reasonable guy and you seem like you know a lot about this school and the people. You've known most of us since we were little...do you think they'd do that?" I asked.
"What if I already gave his position away?" He asked.
"Give it back." I smiled.
Before he could say anything else, someone smashed against the window! The Coach bolted up and I just stood there shocked as I saw the punches being thrown and we both raced outside to break it up.
"What is this?" Coach Rihmore said holding them apart.
They both looked at each other, then me, " Nothing." they both said together.
"You two are running laps." Coach Rihmore said, " NOW!" he said, following them out.
I just stood there, shocked.
"That's not the first time today." Zack said, standing beside me.
"What?" I asked.
"They've been fighting all day." Zack said, " It's kind of funny."
I scoffed, " Why? what caused them to fight like this?" I asked.
"You." Zack answered. I looked at him angrily, " Somebody told a joke, then Davis commented no one would want...things and I guess Marco didn't like it."
"Somebody...So Davis told a joke about me? And Marco..." I stopped, " Why are you telling me this?"
"I'm not a bad person, I just love Hannah." Zack said, " I'm trying to help you out here."
"That's the creepy part." I said, walking away.
I sat in the stands and waited for Marco and Davis' laps to be through. I watched as they sprinted up and down the field and wondered what I would say to Davis and how he could say anything about me. I thought he loved me. I thought he liked me, too. When I heard a whistle blow, I looked up to see Marco and Davis stop running. The Coach said something to them, then left. From the looks of it, the Coach griped them out. I saw them walking out, talking to each other. I hurried down there and before I could get too far, I heard the conversation.
"Oh yeah, cause you're his knight in shining armor!" Davis said.
"And if I am? I mean, at least I don't talk about him like he's lower than dirt!" Marco shouted.
"My friends were talking about him, I wasn't." Davis said.
"You agreed, then you said 'Who wants that.' and that's a comment." Marco said angrily.
"It was a trick question. I do." Davis said, " I want him, but they are my friends."
"So, you're willing to humiliate him to save your friends?" Marco asked.
"If I didn't, they'd think..."
"That you were dating a guy?" I asked, walking into the conversation.
They both turned to me, " Hey, babe, I was..." Davis said nervously.
"You did say it, didn't you? I was kind of hoping that you didn't say anything or that..." I paused, " I can understand you not wanting to be outed, but to say stuff behind my back."
"Babe, I..." Davis started.
"Davis...I don't really trust you." I said slowly.
"Finally." Marco said.
"I'm sick of being everyone's victim." I blurted, " I should 'get over myself', right Marco?"
"I was..." Marco began.
"I'm good." I said, walking away.
