Face-The-Music Chapter 9
By Jamie Wade
"Hell No!" I walked into my room with Aaron and Tara right behind me. Rachel had already left for her date with that asshole. Well, it wasn't him I hated but his brother. But Rachel going on a date with his brother was just as bad. I just couldn't have this happening.
"Josh, calm down."
"I can't calm down. My sister is out on a date with the brother of the guy I hate. How can I possibly calm down?"
"Ok, I know it seems bad."
"It Seems Bad! It Is Bad!"
"Josh" Aaron grabbed me by the face and planted a kiss on me. After that, I completely melted, and pretty much calmed down.
"Damn Aaron, I didn't know you could that. Nice job. Ok Josh, now that you're calm, we can talk rationally about this. Now I know you hate Percy, but you should give his brother a chance, I mean you don't even know him. Just judging him by what his brother does isn't fair, is it?"
"Yeah, I guess not. But I just can't stand his brother."
"I know, but he isn't his brother, just give him a chance."
"Ok Tara, I guess you're right."
"Of course I'm right, I'm always right."
"Yeah, whatever you say." We then spent a few more hours just talking, wondering what to expect at school tomorrow. Man I just can't imagine what school is going to be like; I guess we really didn't think this one through. Aaron and me decided that we would go into the auditorium tomorrow for the singing thing, to see if we were still in it. After a while, Aaron left to go home, while Tara stayed, waiting up for Rachel. After a while we heard Rachel come home, and we met her at the door. As soon as she got in Tara started asking her all these questions, like was he a gentleman, did he smell good, did they kiss, stuff like that. According to Rachel, he was a complete gentleman, he smelt very nice, and they did not kiss. They went to some fancy restaurant, which he paid for, and they had a good time. Ok, maybe he wasn't as bad as his brother; I'll give him a chance. After we talked for a while, Tara went home, and Rachel and me went to bed.
That night, I had a horrible dream. Aaron and me were walking into the auditorium getting ready to sing. We got up there, and we started singing. Then people started throwing things at us, food, book bags, and other stuff. Aaron got hit in the head with a book, and he fell to the ground. I rushed to his side, and saw that he was unconscious. I looked out into the crowed, and saw Neil. I called for him to come help me, but he just stood there. Then I saw Percy come from behind him, and hold his hand. Percy kissed Neil, and then they both walked out, leaving Aaron and me to our doom. I woke up screaming and sweating. Rachel rushed into my room, wandering what the hell was wrong. I told her it was a bad dream, and went back to sleep. I was really not looking forward to school tomorrow.
That morning, I woke up, feeling really bad. I though about just not going, but I know that I needed to be there, for Aaron. So I took a shower, got dressed, and headed towards school. On my way there, I saw Neil and Percy walking together. What the hell? Then I remembered my dream, could it be true? Are Percy and Neil an item, or what? I had no idea, so I drove on, and pulled into the school parking lot. As I got out, I saw a group of kids in a big bunch, probably watching a fight. Then I heard them scream out fag, so I rushed over there, and saw Aaron in the middle with some kid aiming to hit him. I pushed my way in, and kicked the kid right in the balls before he could touch Aaron. "You better stay down you piece of shit, or there's another one where that came from."
I took Aaron away from the mob, this time people got out of my way. I wasn't that big, but when I got angry, people knew not to mess with me. We headed into the school, towards the auditorium.
"So what was that all about?"
"Some kid who doesn't like gay people. All he said to me was that he was going to be the living shit out of me because I was gay."
"Man, I hate people like that. Well now he knows to think twice before messing with my man." Then I pulled Aaron into me, and we walked into the auditorium. We got a few stares as we entered, but I didn't care, fuck em. We stood in front of the teachers in charge of this thing.
"So, are we still welcome to sing in this competition?"
"Well, actually..."
"Actually you are." Mr. Gregory gave the woman a glare, like shut-the-hell-up-there's-no-need-to-discriminate look. Mr. Gregory may be a hard ass, but he doesn't discriminate with anything, that's the one thing I love about that man. With that, the woman got up, and took off. "Well, looks like I need another assistant." Both Aaron and me laughed at that, and we took our seats.
"Hey Aaron, did the school call your mom?"
"Oh, yeah. My mom was like all proud of her son; she said 'I was making a political statement' and that 'I wasn't letting the man put me down'. I know, my mom is a bit of a psycho, but I love her."
"Ha. Yeah, my mom wasn't quite like that, but she said if it makes me happy, than she is happy. Doesn't your mom work for like a business or something?"
"Yeah, but she follows the beat to her own drum. I think that's what makes her so successful. I don't' know though, sometimes she freaks the hell out of me."
Just then I saw Neil and Percy walk in together. I just couldn't get that dream out of my head, what the hell was going on?
"Hey Aaron, do you know what is up with those two?" I pointed towards Neil and Percy.
"No, I haven't got a clue, but they look pretty chummy to me, what's up with that?"
"I don't' know, but I don't like it." Then I saw Kylie come in, and she sat down beside us. We were staring at Neil and Percy; we really didn't pay any attention towards her.
"What are you guys staring at?" Then she looked where we were looking, and she saw. "What the heck, what is Neil thinking? I'm going to go over there right now."
"NO! Don't do that, it's his business. Lets just let him do his thing, and we'll do our thing."
Then Mr. Gregory started the singing thing, and a few people were good, a few were bad. But this was the semi-final round, so basically everybody was pretty good. Then when they called Percy and Brittany, Percy said something to Mr. Gregory, and he was nodding his head. Then Mr. Gregory said something that shocked all of us, it turns out that Neil was Percy's new partner. Ok, what the hell is going on, I need to know. Then Aaron and me went up there, and we did pretty well, but we could have done better. I was too worried about what was going on with Neil.
After the singing thing, me, Aaron and Kylie met up with Tara at lunch. We weren't really talking that much, thinking too much about Neil. Tara finally broke the silence
"Ok guys, what's going on."
"Didn't you hear? It appears that Neil and Percy are an item now or something." And with that, Neil and Percy walked outside with their food, and sat down away from us.
"What an asshole. I mean doesn't he know that Josh hates Percy? How could he do that to you Josh?"
"I don't know, but I'm not going to think about it." I noticed that Neil kept staring over here, probably because I was doing some staring over in his direction too. Then he got up and headed in our direction.
"Oh great, here he comes, brace yourself."
"Hey Josh, can I talk to for a second?"
"Sure, be back later guys." Then I followed Neil to an empty classroom; he better have a good explanation as to why he is hanging with that loser.
"Ok Josh, I know, you're probably wondering why I'm hanging around Percy. See, I was taking my dog for a walk when I came upon him. He looked pretty beat up, so I took inside my house. He told me about the fight he had with you and Aaron. The way he looked though, it didn't look like he got into a fight with you. I asked him if the bruises and cuts were from the fight, and he just started crying. He told me that after your fight with him, he went home. His father had been drinking heavily, and when he came home, his father was hammered. His father started ranting and yelling, calling him a fag. Saying he ruined the family just because he likes to suck cock. Then he started hitting Percy, he hit him again and again. Percy ran out of the house, knowing that his father wouldn't chase him because he was too drunk. And that's when I ran into him. He was at my house all night, and I took care of him. I felt really bad for him, and he really needs help. I know you don't like him, and I know he has made your life a living hell, but can you at last try and be civil for like 2 seconds. I talked to him last night, and he wants to apologize to you, for everything. So, will you?"
I had to take a seat; I couldn't process everything I had just heard in one minute. We sat there in silence for like 5 minutes, I just didn't know what to say. Should I just forget everything Percy had done to me, and forgive him? Could I?
"Josh, you ok?"
"What, oh yeah. I'm just thinking."
"So, will you listen to what he has to say?"
"I guess." I mean what choice did I have, it appears that Neil feels drawn to Percy. And plus Rachel is dating his brother, so I would probably be seeing Percy a lot, so I should at least try to get along with him.
Neil walked out, and then came back with Percy. "I'll leave you two alone." Then Neil walked out, leaving me with Percy. I wanted so bad to just leap across the room and strangle this kid to death. I didn't care if he could take me in a fight, I wanted to hurt him. But I knew that I should listen to what he has to say, for both Neil and Rachel.
"Listen Josh, I know you don't really like me. Why should you, after all I've done. But I need to at least try to apologize to you, that's the least I can do. So I just want to say that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I've done to you in the past; I didn't really mean to hurt you. I just couldn't take my dad anymore, with him hitting me. He's never really hurt me that severe like last night, but there have been occasions. I guess me doing what I did to you gave me a sort of dominance feeling, but I know now that it was wrong. So, will you except my apology?"
Again, I was at a lost for words. "I don't really know. What you did to me was really horrible. It's something I can never get back. I appreciate you telling me your side, and I can kind of see where you're coming from. I guess I don't really have any other choice than to except your apology. It looks like Neil has grown found of you."
"Yeah, and I have grown to like him too. I don't know what it is, but something about him makes me smile."
"It's called love. It might be a new thing to you, trust me, it's great."
"Love uh, well I'll be damned. I never thought that I could be in love. I just hope I don't screw things up with Neil, I don't want to loose him."
"Trust me, nothing could happen. You may hit some ruff spots, but everything will be fine. And I may have accepted your apology, but that doesn't mean I trust you. You will have to earn that."
"Trust me, I'll try, for Neil anyways." Then we walked into the hallway were Neil was waiting for us. I saw this smile form across Neil's face when he saw Percy, awe, he's in love. We went back outside, and sat with everyone else. We kind of sat in silence; everyone was a little weirded out that Percy was sitting with us. Finally though, Tara decided to break the silence.
"Ok, what is going on here?" Good old Tara, stating the obvious.
"Um, well..." I didn't know what to say, I wasn't sure if I should tell them about Percy, it was kind of personal.
"Percy's with me. And before you guys get all defensive for Josh, he already apologized to him."
Everyone just stared at me like the expected it to be a lie. "It's cool guys, really."
"Ok, whatever you say." Then we ate our lunch, starting our conversation back up. Then we went to class, and Tara, Kylie, and Aaron pulled me aside.
"Ok, now what it really going on?"
"Listen, I didn't want to say anything in front of Percy. But last night, his dad beat him up pretty bad. Neil found him outside, and fixed him up. Percy stayed the night at Neil's house, and they really hit it off. So me and Percy are trying to become friends, for Neil. And plus, if Rachel is going to be dating Percy's brother, I'll probably be seeing him."
"Oh man, I didn't know. So you guys are cool now?"
"Somewhat I guess. I'm not just going to forgive him so quickly though."
"Yeah, you shouldn't. But at least we don't have to worry about you guys jumping each other every time you see him."
"Yeah, that will be good. Oh, got to go, that's the late bell."
After school, me, Aaron, and Tara hopped in my car, and headed back to my house. When we got there, I noticed a car in the driveway, and didn't recognize it. We walked in and heard voices in the kitchen, so I headed in that direction.
"Hello? Mom?" When I walked into the kitchen, I noticed that my dad was there. "Dad! What are you doing back so soon?" My dad had been gone on a business trip for a week; he goes on a lot of them. I wish that he wouldn't, but it's important for us to like have a house and stuff, go figure.
"My trip was called short, how's it been going. Hey Tara, and um..."
"Oh, dad, this is Aaron. He's the guy that I met at the beach this past summer. His mom works here in town at some business. They just moved here."
"Oh, the new one on 42nd street."
"Um, yeah."
"Good business. So your mom tells me you've got into a little trouble at school. What's that all about? I'm gone for a week, and you've been starting fights and riots."
"Yeah, um can we talk about it later."
"Sure, but we will talk about it." Dad had invited Tara and Aaron to stay for dinner. Dad asked Rachel a few questions about her new boyfriend. And then me when he found out that he was Percy's brother. He was amazed that Percy and me were trying to be friends. Shocked even that he had missed so much. After dinner, we cleaned up the table, and then watched a little TV. I went over to my mom, and asked her about talking to dad.
"So did you tell dad about what caused the riot?"
"No, I just said that something you did didn't go over well with the students. I think that we should talk to your father though."
"What, right now?"
"Yeah, he's been nagging me about it all day. Come one, lets go get him, and take him to my office."
"George, dear. Can I see you in my office? Josh and I want to talk to you about something."
"Ok honey, be right there." My mom and I went into her office, and waited for my dad. He came in a little while later, and he sat down beside me. My mom was in her office chair behind her desk, and my dad and I were in front.
"Ok, I know I never really told you what happened with the whole riot thing. Well, there is an explanation to it. Josh, do you want to tell him?" My mom looked at me, expecting an answer. So, I took a deep breath, and told my dad.
"Well, dad. See, um, Aaron and me, we're kind of, well. We kind of caused the riot, together."
"What do you mean, you guys caused the riot?"
"Well, see, me and Aaron are kind of like, a couple I guess you could say."
"What?"
"I'm gay dad." Then I saw an expressionless face on my dad, like he couldn't even believe what he was hearing. Then he did something that I didn't even expect.
"That's just fine." Then he got up, walked out, and walked out the front door, slamming it shut. Me and my mom just sat there in awe, not knowing what to do now.
