CHAPTER 9 - FUNNY VALENTINE
Valentine's day...I've lived through 16 years of the loneliest Valentine's Days and now I had someone to share it with. I grinned like a moron all the way to school and when I got there, I opened up my locker to find a little heart shaped card inside. It was from Philip, it read:
"Hey there, Eugene. Wanna do something special tonight? Talk to me afterschool, ok? Love, Philip," in his regular messy penmanship. Scribbled at the bottom was "143, 36 637 -99" meaning, "I love you, Eugene always and forever -Philip" It was kinda corny cause everyone does that pager code thing, but it was cute, nonetheless.
I got through my school day trying desperately not to get distracted by my thoughts. I finally met up with Philip afterschool. I walked him outside and we decided to go out for dinner. We went our separate ways home to get changed. I thought about him all the way home and what I would wear for our special evening. When I reached my house, there sitting on the steps was Jason.
"Hey there," he smiled. "I'm sorry about the other day, I didn't mean to do anything that you didn't want to do. I guess it was a mixed signal," he apologized.
"Well, you know what?! Philip saw us kissing and he thought that I was playing on him! He nearly broke up with me!" I shouted back. I was pretty angry at him right now. Where the hell did he come from, kissing me and then running off leaving a giant mess behind?
He looked up at me, "C'mon Gene, I'm sorry. I wish you the best of luck with Philip. I'll leave you alone, just please, don't hate me. I still wanna be your friend."
He got up and walked away back out towards the street, when something came over me and I grabbed his arm and gave him a big hug.
"Look, I was angry, but I don't hate you," I said as he smiled. "But, I gotta get dressed for me and Philip's thing tonight."
"Thing? What thing is this?" he looked at me with wonder and amusement.
"Oh, shut up. We're just gonna have dinner," I sniveled.
"Sure, sure. But, hey, you guys are really cute together," he said as I walked into the house.
"You should help me pick something out. Nothing formal, just something to go out with," I nudged him.
"Alright, dude," he ran straight to my room and headed for my closet.
He was rummaging in there for a while, when I asked, "why did you kiss me, the other day?"
The noises coming from inside the closet stopped.
"Jason, seriously, why did you kiss me?" I asked.
"Well, I have always been into you and I never knew if you'd be down with me. Shit, I always thought you were straight. When you told me you were gay two days ago, I thought that I had the biggest chance to start up our relationship again. I guess I was wrong," he looked down at his feet.
"Honestly, I thought the same thing about you. Except, when you stopped talking to me, I thought you didn't even wanna be my friend anymore. So I guess I gave up on that fantasy," I sighed.
"Fuck, it's all my fault. If I had stuck around, we might be together. Shit, I'm so stupid. It's all my fault," a tear dropped onto the carpet.
I got up and hugged him, "it's both our faults, one of us should have said something."
He was locked in an embrace with me, when the phone rang. Philip would be over in a little bit.
"I should go, shouldn't I?" he said leaving my room.
"No, it's alright, I want you and Philip to talk about this whole mess."
"Are you sure that's such a good idea?"
"Yeah, I think it will give you guys closure. Besides, I want my best friend and my boyfriend to get along," I gave him another hug.
"It sounds hella wierd when you call him your boyfriend."
I sighed, "I've been waiting hella long just to call someone my boyfriend."
He finally picked out my clothes, when Philip came over. I walked to the door and he stood there smiling.
"Hola, babe," I said jokingly.
Before I could say anything else, he grabbed my waist and gently rubbed his warm and soft lips against mine. I wrapped my arms around him and melted into his strong grip. He broke our union and muttered, "hola to you." He continued to kiss me.
I loved the way his lips tasted. They were always sweet, like he soaked them in honey or candy before he kissed me. He tasted sweet too, like a sugar-coated mouth. I moved my tongue past my lips and started to gently massage his lips as he smiled in response. I thoroughly enjoyed myself so much that I had forgotten all about Jason until I heard a loud cough behind me.
All of a sudden, I opened my eyes and saw Philip glaring at Jason. His eyes shrunk with a look of rage and he monotonically asked through his teeth, "what's he doing here?!"
"Actually, I want you two to talk about everything. I care about the both of you a lot. Jason is my friend and you are my boyfriend and I just want you two to get along," I looked up longlingly at him.
"I'll do it, for you," he said in a valiant manner. He approached Jason as he ascended the stairway. Philip was probably no more than an inch taller than Jason. Philip was skinny, but he had plenty of muscle and he was a pretty big guy. Jason seemed like the opposite, the short and really built type.
Philip shook his hand and I smiled. I went into the bathroom to prepare and let them talk things over. When I got out, they were joking with each other. Jason greeted me with a warm smile and Philip wrapped me in his arms, putting his chin on my shoulder.
"I see why you guy's are good friends. I hate to admit it, but he's a very nice guy," he said.
"Thank you, Philip," I gave him a peck on the cheek.
"You guys should be going soon, so I should go too. It was nice getting to know you, Phil," Jason said walking towards the door.
"Sure man, remember, we're gonna cruise sometime and hook you up with someone as cute as Eugene," he responded with a laugh.
Jason didn't say anything for a minute. "Phil, you're one lucky guy," he finally said and left.
"You sure are," I started laughing.
"Yeah, I really am," he said giving me a kiss.
