I looked out my office window and groaned. Blue, blue, light blue occasionally spotted by a faraway plane: Not even a cloud sailing around to make it interesting.
I'd originally wanted a simple office, maybe in a cabin out in the woods somewhere, but my leading architect laughed at my simpleton idea, and eventually cajoled me into letting him build the grandest and tallest tower Chicago had ever seen: the MarksMayfair HeavenTree which, six years later, stood proud near Sears Tower, eclipsing it, and looking ready to pounce on the city. Of course, my office -"the Canopy"- was located at the very top, a steel and glass cage that was barely visible from the ground.
