Final Fantasy: Rosa
III
Are You Listening, Gramps?
Two guards exited from the Judgment Hall, heading down a corridor of the East Building to the dormitories. One adjusted his helmet and sighed. "Wedge, did you hear?"
"You mean about Silver?"
"Yeah."
Wedge slowly shook his head. "It's a fucking shame." he growled. "You know, he was in my Magic Mechanics class. He tutored me to pass. They wouldn't have let me try out for the Royal Guard if I failed." Wedge grunted with some frustration. "And now he's on death row. Unbelievable. What about you? D'you know him?"
"Anyone who was on the Ruby knew him. Once, my arm got burnt pretty bad by a misfired cannon. He came all the way down to the weapons deck and healed me good as new. And you know Jennings, right? He was stationed right next to me, and I saw him die. But Silver came and cast some spell and he was alive again. Poor guy... he must feel real bad about the news. But who would've thought he was a rebel? I guess he had it coming."
"Shit, Biggs. He doesn't deserve it. He's a fucking white mage."
"Well yeah. But he was an informant the whole time he was on the Ruby. If he didn't tell the rebels when we were attacking, I bet we wouldn't have had so much trouble."
Wedge gave an incredulous expression, but didn't show it to Biggs. "His job is to save lives. He was saving lives by healing guys like you and Jennings, and hell, he was saving lives by informing the rebels. You know, General Morta only arrested him after he refused to destroy Mysidia."
"Really? Damn... how the hell could anyone bring themselves to do that?"
"I'm telling you, something's going on. The queen hasn't seen anyone except military leaders for weeks. And who would destroy Mysidia, even if they were helping rebels?" Wedge clicked his tongue. "...And Silver. It fucking pisses me off."
"Come on, Wedge, get a hold of yourself." Biggs lowered his voice as the two of them passed a gilded, luxurious door. "You gotta be careful. If someone hears you, you could be tried too."
The guards silently turned the corner to the dormitories. Just as they did, the gilded door flung open. A rather tall Black Wizard stepped out, followed by a White Wizard. The White Wizard was short, and her robe was fitted appropriately. Her hood was up, but it did not obscure her pretty face; she had long golden locks that curled like fine threads on spindles. She gave a nice smile as she closed the door behind her. "So. Your name's Void, right?"
Void's deep raspy voice responded, but he did not give her direct eye contact. "Yes."
"Well I'm Winnie Sharp." Winnie held out her hand to shake. Void gave the hand a very curious look before reluctantly reaching out to grasp it. He purposely shook it hard, and was surprised when Winnie returned the grip. "I guess I'm gonna be your new partner."
Void noticed how sweet her voice was. Her face was bright and smiley. She was too peppy for Void's taste, and he secretly cringed. "How old are you, anyway?" he gruffly asked, hoping to offend her.
Winnie pouted. "16. Wbat are you, my dad?"
Void gave a frustrated noise. "I'm 25."
"Yeah, well you sound old. Grandpa." Winnie giggled. Void was not pleased. Winnie continued. "Do you like my robes? They're new. I never had one with these triangle things on them before..."
"How long have you been a wizard?"
Winnie rolled her eyes. "I just told you, Gramps. Just. Ordained. Get a hearing aid."
"I'll say it simply. You don't have what it takes for this job." Void said.
"What, and my predecessor did?" Winnie asked, annoyed. "I'm just as good as anyone! I was the top of my class."
Void felt something growing sour in his mouth, as he suddenly was hit with an urge to punch Winnie in the face. "Alright. I'll put it this way. You're too fresh. We see bad stuff, and you don't have the guts."
Winnie squinted her pretty eyes. "You know... I was told to keep an eye on you, Void." she seemed to give an abrupt about-face to the subject of conversation.
Void cleared his throat before turning away. "We should get back on the Ruby. General Morta doesn't tolerate-"
"Actually, General Morta said we have one more thing to do while we're here." Winnie said. Void stopped in his tracks, turning around to face Winnie, who hadn't moved at all. She motioned in her direction. "Come on." She went her way, and Void grudgingly trailed her.
Winnie went down a staircase, and Void noticed the light growing dimmer. He realized they were on the basement floor, where the dungeons were located. "What business do we have here?" Void asked, annoyed.
Winnie turned a corner and continued across a hall of prison cells, in order to reach the next staircase. Several hopeless, emaciated figures stared at her from behind bars, but she seemed unphased. "You'll see." she spun around and winked at Void before descending. Void followed.
Void followed Winnie down the second staircase, and the light grew very dim, the only source being several wall-mounted torches. They stopped at the end of a narrow hallway, where two guards stood watch in front of a lone door. Winnie stepped forward, exchanging glances with the guards. "General Morta sent us."
One of the guards nodded, opening the door for her. She gave a horrendous curtsy before entering the dank cell, and Void followed her. Winnie dove in with little hesitation, and she stopped midway in the large cell, beholding something in front of her. Void went past the threshold, but when he saw the object of Winnie's attention he stopped. "...What is this?" Void asked.
Winnie turned her head to Void, raising an eyebrow. "Well, what did you expect, gramps?" She bent down on her knees. The other white mage was bound to the wall with chains. He pathetically sat in the folds of his robes, and his hood was down. His eyes were pasted to the floor. It was Silver.
Void never had many opportunities to see Silver with his hood down. But he couldn't help but marvel whenever he had a chance. Silver had shiny golden hair, perfectly straight and falling past his shoulders. Even though it was almost always tied back, his shorter locks in the front still vaguely got into his eyes and covered his forehead. All of Silver's features were fragile and ethereal- from his soft pale skin to his shining blue irises, to the delicate intricacies of his fingers. Void never knew why Silver was prone to such humble shynesses like his hood; his face never anything to lend shame. But the ephemeral visage that Void silently admired was stained with a sadness unlike any other.
Winnie snapped her fingers, trying to get Silver's attention. "Hey. Hey, Silver?" Silver only barely looked up to meet eyes with Winnie. His arms were bound above his head, and he briefly repositioned his wrists in the cuffs. Winnie grinned. "Hi there! I'm Winnie. I'm your replacement."
"This is outrageous." Void said from behind her, flustered.
Winnie stood up, turning to face Void. She still had an incongruent smile on her face. "General Morta said that your loyalties were questionable. Traitors always end up like this one over here." Winnie gave a cursory motion behind her. "You wanna join him?"
Void was silent. Winnie gave a slight tick of her head. "Didn't think so." She looked back to Silver, who still bowed his head. "You're a little traitor. You're a disgrace." Winnie giggled. She suddenly conjured a staff from thin air, and tauntingly waved it in front of Silver. "And you're so stupid! Trying to destroy the Carbunkle Siphon with a Holy spell... I mean, duh!"
"Get to the point, Winnie." Void added venom to her name.
Winnie gave another pout. She wagged her finger at Void. "Old men sure are impatient. I was just about to `get to the point.'" Winnie imitated Void's rasp as she quoted him. She began to pace back and forth between the bound Silver and the unamused Void. "Alright, here's the thing. White mages have to say this stupid vow when they join the White Art Order. We can't use blades, we can't purposely hurt people, blah blah blah. Stuff like that." Winnie blew a raspberry. "But when I asked General Morta about it, he said that it was okay to kinda bend the rules if it's for the greater good." Winnie did an about-face and shot a sharp look to Silver, who was paying more attention to the floor. "Right? Silver, right?" Silver was silent. Winnie looked angry. "So my job is to find out how much you know about the rebels, Silver. Let's start with locations. Are there any... here? In Calledone?"
"I don't know." Silver finally spoke. His voice was cracked but still seemed fairly confident.
Winnie's face scrunched up, as though she despised what confidence he did have. She clutched her hands to her staff, and closed her eyes. "Cowards. Weak. Those rushing to die. Foxbird!" A small bird made of light the color of fire sprung from the tip of her staff. It fluttered around Winnie in a bright flash of color before diving straight into Silver's forehead and disappearing.
Suddenly, Silver's fists tightened. His eyes closed, and Void noticed his breathing begin to quicken. Winnie looked satisfied. "Come on, Silver. You're not that stupid, right? You probably know where to look to find your buddies."
"N-no." Silver responded again. It seemed to be an effort to speak.
Winnie was not amused. Again, she clutched her staff. "Cowards! Weak! Those rushing to die! Foxbird!" Two birds flew into the air and invaded Silver's head. Silver now wildly shook his head, and his wrists rattled in his restraints. He was hyperventilating. Winnie yelled. "Where are the rebels?!"
Silver moaned in response. Winnie looked wild. Void, horrified, stepped in front of her. "What are you doing?!" Void demanded.
Winnie giggled. "When I was little, my daddy said I was good at green magic. Now I'm almost as good at it as I am at white magic. Foxbird's a fear spell. I thought it'd maybe make this idiot talk, but it's not working." Winnie grabbed her staff again. "Lost energy, raise the heartrate! Drain!"
Orange lights, in the form of spherical postules, flowed out of Silver's heart and into Winnie's. Silver contorted in pain, and he screamed: rattling his chains as his wrists turned red. Winnie gasped from the sensation, and put a finger to her lips to lick. She spoke more relaxed now. "Anytime you wanna tell me is fine."
"You-you..." Silver spoke breathlessly, and his breaths were rattled. "As a...a white mage... How could you do this?"
"Excuse me?" Winnie asked, as though offended. "Listen, stupid. Don't act all high-and-mighty with me. I don't know what you people are gonna do to the Impirium. You could be planning to bomb us or something. So the sooner I get info from you, then the sooner I could be saving lives. I'm doing exactly what a white mage's supposed to do. I'm protecting the peace."
"Stop this! He knows nothing!" Void said, savagely.
Winnie scoffed. "Ha! Jeez, gramps. Old for nothing. Doesn't even know anything..." Suddenly, Winnie perked up. "Hey, I know. Use some of your black magic on him. It hurts a lot more."
"I will not."
"...Ok. Let me put it this way. General Morta said that if you didn't prove yourself by torturing him, he'd throw you in jail too. Then I could practice magic on both of you. See? We'd all be happy." Winnie put a finger on her cheek. "Hey, you and Silver were friends, right? I'm sure he'd understand."
Void clenched his fists tight. "Shut. Up."
"Oh. Alright then." Winnie said, whimsically. "I guess I'll just have to report you as an insubordinate."
Void yelled with anger. "Do what you will, I don't care anymore."
"...void." Void turned around. It was Silver, still heaving, his hands hanging limp in the shackles. "void, i... i'm gonna die anyway. it's not worth it, don't kill yourself for nothing." Void's yellow eyes seemed desperate in the shadows beneath his hat. Silver gave an extremely weak smile. "c'mon. i don't want you to die too. go ahead, it's ok."
Winnie whistled. "Aww. Sweet." she ticked her head. "You people make me wanna puke. Hurry up."
Void looked as shameful as he conjured his own staff. He pointed the tip at Silver, hesitating as though waiting for permission. Silver gave just the slightest nod. Void made an effort not to let his voice falter. "Scatter your chilly sharp blades. Blizzard."
Blue wind swirled around Silver, and he shivered incessantly. Frost began to form on his face and arms, and small blades of ice scratched at his face. Winnie heard his teeth chattering, and saw his eyes close in pain. She bent down close to him. "Are you cold, pretty boy? D'you wanna talk yet? Huh? Yeah." Winnie's voice grew colder with the wind.
"That's enough." Void growled.
Winnie raised an eyebrow. "You could be casting more powerful spells than that. Come on, use a level two spell." No response. Winnie shook her head in disbelief. "Are you listening, Gramps? A level two spell!"
Void pointed his staff again. "Drifting breeze, come down with fury. Blizzara." This time, a small flurry of snow engulfed Silver. Silver couldn't huddle for warmth with his hands bound to the wall, instead curling his head further into his chest and closing his eyes tighter. He started to look pale, and snow accumulated on his robe.
Winnie nodded. "Ok, that's good." Void stopped quickly. Silver visibly shivered, and his chattering was so loud it echoed in the room. Winnie gave a wide grin to Void. "That wasn't so bad!"
"He. Doesn't. Know. Anything."
Winnie seemed to ignore Void, as if she had completely forgotten the reason she was so adamantly torturing Silver in the first place. She looked down on Silver, then briefly prodded him with her foot. "Hm. I wonder if he's almost dead." She looked at Void. "You should thaw him."
Void, restraining himself from attacking her, swept his staff over Silver. A warm fiery light emnated from the tip, and the snow began to melt. Winnie stopped Void when the last of the frost thawed from his face, and his chattering was only subtle. She bent down next to Silver again. "I can't have you dying yet. I wanna see the look on your face when the Black Archmage casts Death on you tomorrow."
Winnie got up to leave. Void unconjured his staff, giving the suffering Silver one last apologetic look before heading for the door. Winnie stopped. "Oh, wait. One more thing." She turned around, staff in hand. "Muddled haze of mind, recall nothing! Fog!" Silver gasped. A white light shone around his head and vanished again. Winnie smiled. "Don't try any tricks. I can't wait to see you in the morning."
The door slammed shut. Silver shivered from the cold and darkness, and searched his mind for the reassuring words of the White Art Order. But he could no longer describe the letters in his head.

To be continued...
Hello every-body,
Meet Winnie Sharp! She is a stone-cold bitch, in case you didn't notice. :D. She also has a chemical imbalance in her brain, giving her mental problems. I think she's the brainchild of my own repressed rage at characters like Relm from FFVI, or God forbid, Selphie from FFVIII. I hate you, peppy girls!!! Who will gallantly save our dying Silver? :O Heaven knows. `till next time :).
Thanks for reading this far ^^.
