Finding love after incredible loss – Chapter 43
Scott was in tears and hugged AJ tightly to him sobbing in his lover's ear. AJ hugged him tightly until he calmed down; he held Scott's head and said, "so I won't call you FINE anymore it seems to make you cry so I'll just leave it at – yes I'm sure I love you with my whole heart."

It's June now and the guy's head home to Washington for a quick visit between spring and summer classes. Scott was a bit frustrated with AJ that he insisted they change into linen pants and shirts in the car on the way to the house. They changed the boys first and then slipped on identical outfits to the boys – Scott thought AJ had lost his mind, but AJ told him that everyone would be there to welcome them and he did not want to have them looking like a couple of bums. Scott continued to complain, AJ leaned in and whispered, "two choices – one you change and look stunning or I fuck your brains out here in the back seat with the driver and boys watching you choose."
Scott removed his clothes down to his underwear and laid on the back seat with his legs in the air and said, "hammer that hole baby." Scott said y'all are a bunch of nerf herders and pulled on the linen pants and shirt, of course AJ had bought new matching loafers for them all as well.
They pulled into the driveway, unloaded and the boys ran to Mimi and Papi, Gigi and PawPaw right behind them. JR hugged the men and welcomed them home grabbing some of their luggage, JJ handed Conor to Charlene. The small amount of luggage was left in the entry hall and everyone headed to the family room as Charlene and Evelyn walked in with the boys, music began playing. Charlene, Elliott and Evelyn walked out to the patio with the boys and disappeared. JJ grabbed AJ's arm and JR grabbed Scott's arm, Scott asked AJ what they hell is going on –
AJ paused and said "just listen and go with it my love" AJ started singing to the music that was playing as the four men walked down the aisle to where all their guests had gathered to watch their commitment ceremony –

Scott hugged AJ and said "you sing too, what can't you do." AJ was quick with "nothing as long as I have you."
Their family and friends were all there waiting for them. They walked down the same aisle that Gina and Kevin had late last year, when they made it to the end JJ and JR hugged their sons and then stepped in front of them. Caleb and Conor ran from Mimi and Gigi to daddy and papa, wrapping their arms around their legs and standing on their feet; both men reached down and ruffled the hair of the two tow heads.
JJ began – "as you all are aware same sex marriage is not recognized by the State of Washington or the Federal Government at this time. That does not mean that two people who are deeply in love and committed to being together should not seek to join their lives with the one they love."
JR continued "you all know that at Christmas time these to knuckleheads pledged their love to each other"
AJ interrupted "I asked first." Scott quipped "attention seeker."
JR interrupted boys "now listen up and behave for the next 10 or so minutes then you can act like the old married couple you already are."
AJ laughed loudly and Scott said, "here we go."
AJ leaned in and kissed Scott full on the mouth and then quipped "oops, that was supposed to be later, I got ahead of myself. Dad continue please."
JR and JJ went back and forth talking about love, commitment and dedication to each other. JJ and JR finished – "we acknowledge your desire to be husband and husband and this group of friends and family are here to support your decision to commit your lives to each other for now and forever."
AJ grabbed Scott and pulled him into one of the most passionate kisses they had ever shared; they were vaguely aware of Conor and Caleb whining about being squished and then heard "Papa pick me up" – Scott cried at that moment – he scooped up the boys and said "Papa is sorry he squished you but Daddy wanted to kiss Papa for being a good guy." Both boys kissed Scott on the mouth and hugged him. AJ thanked their parents, family and friends for sharing the day with them; he wanted their attention for a bit of time so he could make sure his wishes were understood by everyone present.
AJ started in with – "as you can tell I love this man with all my heart and soul, you also know that it hit me when I was at the lowest point in my very long life." Everyone laughed as AJ turned 22 less than 30 days ago. "Anyway, sorry for the amateur humor. Anyway, we have been gone for about 5 months and you can see things have changed a bit between Scott and the boys as they now call him Papa and they seem to like him more today than Daddy, but I won't hold that against them."
Caleb said, "Daddy we love you to the moon and back." AJ kissed both boys. "Always and forever."
AJ continued –
"Ok I promise I'm getting to the point soon. After the death of my wife Syd, I became and obscenely wealthy man, none of you know the settlement that was reached with the federal government over the wrongful death suit but suffice it to say we could not work and never spend it all. The boys lost their mom and I lost my life or so I thought, he kissed Scott again and Caleb grabbed his daddy to hold him, Conor was out in Scott's arms. It really is no one's business but mine but you all know I'm sometimes to honest and transparent – I hope you all understand that I am telling you this from a place of honesty to ensure the four of us have your support now and into the future.
I have been working with my attorneys to set some things in motion to ensure that Conor and Caleb are taken care of by the people that love them if something were to happen to me. I have talked this through with my parents – Evelyn, JJ, Charlene and Elliot please come up here, Scott and JR to make sure everyone is on the same page. Scott will be signing the final adoption papers for the boys officially making him a parent to them. Additionally, I have added funded the trusts that their mom set up for them, a trust to fund education, housing and educational support for young families without the means to get an education and better their lives. The rest of the settlement is in a family trust for the four of us and any future children we have. Scott and I have established living wills and powers of attorney with each other as the executor/attorney of fact, it's the only way to ensure that we are able to make decisions concerning the care of the other in the time of an emergency. Our wills have been updated given the adoption, family trust and the custodial agreements for Conor and Caleb. Our parents are on board with all provisions of the adoption, trusts and wills as they set in stone our family unit and provide safe keeping for their relationship with their grand kids. They all hugged and went into the house to sign and notarize all the documents."
Eva and Gina took control again of the festivities – Gina began "now that my baby brother, the pain in the butt, is gone let's have some fun and if any of you rat us out to AJ about that comment you will pay dearly."
The music, wine and barbeque were underway and everyone was having a great time. AJ and Scott signed all the papers in front of AJ's attorney, JJ, Evelyn, Charlene, Elliott and JR. AJ looked to Charlene and Elliott and said "I know this is really hard for you, but I need to make sure the boys are taken care of and they look to Scott as their dad as well. I will never let Syd be too far from their hearts and you are my mom and dad too and I am so grateful you are part of our lives. By the way why the hell haven't you visited?"
Charlene had tears in her eyes and both her and Elliott sputtered to answer AJ's directness. He never wavered waiting for an answer – Elliott said "we weren't sure if we were welcome or not." Scott actually got a little hot under the collar – "that's a chicken shit answer Dad; neither AJ nor I have done anything to make you feel less a part of our family. Everyone has been out to see us including Eva, Gran and Nanny the only people that haven't are you two so what the hell gives?"
Charlene was full on crying at this point, Elliott looked at her she nodded slightly and he dove in. "Charlene was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas, went through extensive treatments and has not had the energy to do much of anything. She has rested for this entire week to make sure she could get through the bulk of today."
AJ was seeing red – "everyone out now." No one moved and AJ flipped – "I didn't stutter, you three sit everyone else out NOW." AJ shoved everyone but Scott, Charlene and Elliott out the door. He took a deep breath and turned to address Elliott and Charlene. "I'm going to ask you one question and don't even think of lying to me, I will know – if Syd was alive would you have told her you were sick?"
The silence was deafening – AJ stared at the two, Scott shifted in his seat but knew when AJ was this direct you held on for the ride. Charlene finally found her voice – "yes, I believe I would have."
"Why would you have told her?"
"Because she is my daughter would need to know in case something happened."
"Ok, so if Syd would have been a son would you have told him?" Charlene started crying hard as did Elliott. AJ was fighting back tears but plowed ahead.
"So, all the times you told me you thought of me as your son were lies then, that hurts a great deal. I meant it earlier that you are a mom and dad to me, there is nothing that happens in my life that I keep from you, I brought you into the adoption, the trusts and the wills because I thought I was more than the sperm donor for your grand kids. Charlene, I wish you the best in your fight, but I need some air."
AJ stood and left the office, walked out the front door, down the driveway and away from the house. Scott sat there for a moment trying to figure out what just went down and knew this was likely to end badly. Charlene was inconsolable as she knew she had messed things up. Scott excused himself to find Evelyn – he found her with the boys at the table getting them some food.
