CHAPTER 6

(Revisiting Chapter 5)

The laughter, the touching, the giggling and joking that filled the kitchen the next morning suggested that another barrier had been surmounted by father and son. And so it went for long weeks as Jason's son recovered fully from his ordeal. As noted earlier, the father was determined to be there as his son grew into a joyfully resilient adult...and so he was. Not that there weren't some difficult moments... There were. We know, for instance, that before the Denali tragedy Nels seemed to be revealing a heterosexual orientation. During Ishikawa's efforts to save and transform the youth, however, something went unchecked. Due to lack of knowledge or accident...whatever the factor or factors...subsequent behavior established that Nels' sexual orientation had shifted towards the homosexual pole. As he developed during his "post-Denali" period, however, this is not to say that his path was smooth or without serious challenges. (As each of us knows, there is a price to be paid, be it in fiction or nonfiction.) Nevertheless, Jason Sears efforts to provide conditions in which Nelson could continue to grow - not only in the sexual realm, but in so many others - suggests the importance of the father's continuing role in his son's development.

(Continuing Our Story: New Growth)

The increasing closeness between Jason and Nelson Sears offered many opportunities for growth. Many of the young man's contemporaries were now two years into their "higher" education, whether in college, apprenticeship programs, or work experience. Even though Nels was highly intelligent - and had been a top student - much of his energy over the last couple of years had obviously been absorbed in physical and psychological recovery...first from his mountaineering accident, then from Professor Ishikawa's transformation and, finally, from repairs necessitated by the Government raid. There was also the matter of his relationship with his father. Earlier, it was probably fair to say that Nels' father performed little more than the duties expected of a wealthy father who was concerned for his family. Yes, he had heavy work-related responsibilities that must surely have introduced some degree of "distance" and pressure at times, but many of us have lived through this phenomenon without feeling completely shortchanged. Further, the fact that they were jointly involved in mountaineering appears to have been important in his earlier development. It doesn't appear wise, however, to ignore the comments about Sarah Sears in the first chapter. Nor should we ignore the fact that Nels was aware of some aspects of the deep relationship that involved some intense sex between Bill and his father. These data seem to suggest that earlier familial relationships were not all that Nels desired. Late in his eighteenth year, it would also seem that time was growing short for significant improvement.

As soon as Nels passed his graduation exams at Crocker Memorial in the early fall (after intensive study rewarded by the highest marks), he began to talk about beginning his college studies come the winter or spring terms. Naturally, he buttonholed available students he knew best from Bill's class and his own about their thoughts and recommendations. Having narrowed the list to those in which he was initially most interested, he went to Jason and asked him if he could give him some help in visiting a number of these schools. As was increasingly the case, Jason was there for him. They decided that Nels would personally request contacts in Bay Area schools, especially Cal-Berkeley and Stanford. His father suggested that he would help request visits both at Harvard and at Brown (an Ivy League school in Providence, RI, highly praised by Dr. Ara Casey, an alumnus and Headmaster of Crocker Memorial). They would fly to Boston, take a train from Boston to Providence and thence to New York City. Jason grinned widely as he suggested they would fly home only after they had completed their "work" in New York!

Jason's open and positive support of Nels' college planning had an immediate effect on his son, as well as on their relationship. In past weeks - other than for an occasional sexual encounter - a certain amount of polite, respectful "distance" had remained. Now an increasing air of informal camaraderie permeated all aspects of their relationship. Further - and for the very first time in Nelson's home life - the young man gradually relaxed about sex around his father. (Perhaps due in part to vestiges of our Puritan heritage and/or the simple fact that further back along the evolutionary line such openness from an uppity cub could get you ejected from the pride...or even eaten as an eventual rival...this appears to be extremely rare in American families.) At first, the signs were small. For instance, after knocking Jason might enter his son's room to find him working at the computer naked. Where before, the young man might have turned red as a beet and near hysterically searched for a pair of shorts - or almost anything else to cover his genitals, it now resulted in little embarrassment. In fact, Jason frequently enjoyed seeing him in the nude - at breakfast, perhaps sunning himself outside...or sitting cross-legged in front of the fire during an evening chat. He found it to be a magnificent sight!

Even given this far greater openness with regard to sex, Jason was taken aback one evening. Simply put, his son nearly became comatose when trying to express something of great personal concern - something about which he definitely desired advice. After hemming and hawing for several minutes and otherwise trying to avoid the inevitable, Nels finally spat out a question: Were there any conditions under which Jason would be "disgusted" with him, or not even want to be his father? When he admitted that he really couldn't think of any, at least when push came to shove, the lad asked, hesitatingly, "What if you discovered that I wanted more than a little occasional sex...that I was 'queer' through and through?" "Clearly," Jason thought, "this was not the son whom he had known at Crocker Memorial." When Jason paused, wondering how in the world he was going to work his way out of this corner, Nelson almost growled, "Come on, Dad! You remember the expression from school. Hell, I even heard it in that hotshot law office where I was supposed to begin an internship! 'Queer'! 'Fag'! 'Homo'! 'Queer' ...Right?"

Seeing that his hands were shaking slightly and moisture in his eyes was reflecting the fire, Jason simply shrugged and responded, "I may love you, but that doesn't mean I own you or have to control your answers to life's problems. In fact, Beast, that love means I have to respect you. Sure, I may disagree with a decision and even regret your having made it, but that doesn't call for disgust in you. And it damned well doesn't call for trying to sever something that can't be severed...like the ties between us! Understand, son?"

Nels crawled over to his father, heavy tears and trembling suggesting how much energy had been blocked by that question. Jason grasped a heavy upper arm and rather roughly drew Nels to his chest. Softly he kissed the youngster, lightly tongued his prominent delts, ran his fingers lightly over his heavily muscled back and glutes...down over the back of his sturdy thighs and up his powerful quads. Pausing, he brushed the long scrotum before cupping the lad's prominent balls. He could no longer avoid the fact that Nels' cock - longer, thicker, and more inflamed than he had ever seen it - set him on fire. (Finally, for the first time, he was able to accept the fact that Nelson's body had always set him on fire.) Carefully, he helped the boy to lift up over his own phallus...and then to descend slowly, taking it into his body. Hours passed before father and son stirred from that comfortable spot in front of the flickering fire. As they snuggled together in bed trying to get warm during the wee hours of the morning, Jason had to ask one more question, no matter how unnecessary: "Did I speak directly to your concerns, Nels?" "You better believe it, Dad, and I'm grateful. I'm still really uncomfortable about what a 'gay life' really involves. You've helped, but I still would like to know more than I know about gay sex." "Talk about being a babe in the wilderness..." Jason laughed to himself. Publically, he promised to be more...'creative' -

and quickly set about fulfilling that promise!

(Notes from the Old World)

          The Northeastern Schools

Needless to say, both the elder and the younger Sears were well prepared when the appointed time for visiting schools in the East arrived. The flight to Boston went without a hitch as did the short train ride to Providence. Their reception at both Harvard and Brown was exactly that which one would expect from two of the very finest schools in the country. On evening preceding their trip into New York City, they had time to compare notes over a fine seafood dinner in capital city of Rhode Island, the "Ocean State".

"Remember, son, that this little trip exists to expose you to a few different aspects of a gay life. Believe me, there are as many different approaches to being gay as there are to being straight! I'd really like you to see some things and meet a few people whom you wouldn't be likely to encounter even in Hillsborough. Still excited by the opportunities that would be open to Nels at either of the New England schools, their minds were quickly turning to the delights awaiting them in the Big Apple. They boarded the Acela Express, Amtrak's streamliner on the run from Boston to Washington, DC. New York City lay less than three hours southwest of Providence.

          Arrival in New York City

Amtrak's sleek express pulled into Penn Station within minutes of being on time. As the crowds pushed for the exits, Nels continued to cling to the edge of his seat with hands whose knuckles were white with strain. Feeling his father's hand on his waist, he murmured, "It's ok, Dad. It's just taking me a few minutes to get used to the crowds. There just doesn't seem to be enough air! Unfortunately, what happened next became a family classic. To the end of time, the story was that Nels didn't breathe from the moment he let go of his seat on the express until he was firmly seated in a subway train as it sped along under the streets of the great metropolis! In any case, the first stop planned by his experienced guide didn't become obvious until they emerged from deep underground in an area that didn't even look like pictures of Manhattan he had seen!

          The Rainbow

Fortunately, they did spot a small theater across the street whose marquee announced a film titled BMOC (i.e., "Big Man on Campus"). According the marquee, the stars, Jock Simmons, Nutts Hansen, and Boobs Blessing, had won all sorts of awards at film festivals on the Riviera.

There didn't seem to be many patrons around for the first showing of the day, but Jason still had to stand in line for a few minutes. Entering the lobby, the youngster looked around curiously. Yes, there were a few posters for coming attractions. Prince Hairy? Blonds Are Better? Golden Inches? A strange little leer crossed the hunk's face. Jason quickly rejoined him with buttered popcorn and soft drinks. He also handed him a small packet of folded paper towels and told him to keep them in his coat pocket. Strange... No one else seemed to have them. In fact, he hadn't seen any paper towels since downing a quick breakfast at home. In any case, so equipped, the Professor led him to a portion of the upper balcony that seemed almost completely empty. It smelled kinda strange, but it was too dark to check it out. Sitting down, they were almost immediately involved in a celluloid orgy involving a horde of southern California college students.

There were porn films on the home television, but at $20.00 a throw he doubted that he would be seeing many of them! In any case, he was about to see his first! Trying to keep an open mind, he remembered that his football buddies had described the plot of a movie they had seen in their "film art" course as "admirably straightforward". BMOC seemed to qualify for a similar accolade. Twenty minutes into the film, for instance, there had already been 14 orgasms. It was probable that one young woman was already preggers, for she had stopped taking the pill in order to trap a husband. Only one man had experienced anything like a similar tragedy. It seems that Nutts Hansen had simply dropped his clothes on the floor by the door to Boobs' room in the Triple X sorority. Unfortunately, an overly zealous custodian had swept them up. The buxom lass, and several of her friends, were searching (at snail's pace) for something that Nutts could use to cover up.

In disgust, the college jocks returned to the Beta House for some action that the women were unwilling to provide. From that point, the action rose to a grand crescendo of holiness in which cum filled every hole and covered every participant. Lawdy... One could even smell cum! "Man... Great technology!" Nels thought. The lad watched in fascination, especially when a brown-haired young man dominated the action. Man, did he ever resemble Bill, his sports buddy at Crocker Memorial who was still studying at Fresno State! Even as he joined most of the audience in shouting profanities and commands at the squirming mass of pulchritude in the frat's basement "playroom", however, he leaned over and whispered to his dad that he was in trouble. Placing his hand on the elder Sears' thigh, however, he discovered that his dad was as hot and bothered as he! "Dad!" he whispered in great discomfort, "I'm losing it. I'm going to cum!"

"For heaven's sake, Beast, don't do that!" his life-guide and idol panted. "We've got a full afternoon and evening ahead of us. Can't make it jizzmarked! I'll help, but you need to grab your toweling paper!" With that, Jason began to claw wildly at the youth's zipper. Though the angle was terrible, he managed to pull it down and immediately began searching within. Glorying in the realization that his boy was also trying to help him, he extricated the culprit and held it up in the faint light of the cinema. Glowing softly (as if illuminated from within), coiling like a great anaconda, it lengthened and thickened before his eyes. Suddenly, shouts and curses began to ring out from every corner of the theater. Rivers of precum were running down his upraised fingers. Within seconds, colored lights flashed in his eyes. He felt as if he were being tossed to and fro by a major explosion. Temporarily, he lost consciousness.

Thank all that's holy for Mississippi-Pacific's award-winning absorbent toweling paper! Without it, his first stop in the Big Apple would have been a disaster.
