Chapter 17

School the next day was different. As usual, Jon and I walked together. We did keep our hands to ourselves though, as we weren't out to the rest of the school yet. It was something I was interested in though, as hiding who I was was beginning to wear very thin on me. I found it ridiculous that while everyone else could be open about themselves, and who they loved, Jon and I had to keep it quiet for fear of being attacked at school.

Since coming out to my parents and to Jon, I started to think that we needed to come out to our friends. I didn't expect all of them to be accepting of Jon and me, but those who were truly our friends, I knew would always be there for us.

The first class, Jon and I immediately sensed that something was different. For some reason, people were looking at us as if they had never seen us before. I saw Simon, who Jon had introduced me to before, and even he was a little quiet around us.

On our way to second period, I pulled Jon off to the side in the hallway. "Jon, some thing is up today."

"Yeah I know Jay, it's like all of a sudden we've become strangers in our own school."

Our private conversation was suddenly interrupted by a couple of students in our second class.

"So, are the rumors true about you two?" a boy named Daniel asked.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"You know what he means Jason," the second boy, named Luke. "Are you two fags and like in love?"

"I don't see how it's any of your business, dickwad," Jon said shortly.

"Oh look at the little fagot go!" Daniel said. "So tell me Jon, does he give good head?"

"Yeah, does he? Maybe we should find out?" Luke sneered.

"You guys make me sick. Why don't you go pick on someone your own size, like maybe one of the first graders," Jon shot back.

"Who the fuck do you think you are, you little queer ass," Luke demanded, pushing Jon up against the lockers. I started to help Jon when Daniel grabbed a hold of me and prevented me from doing anything.

"Someone who's got more brains in my finger nail than you've got in your entire body shithead," Jon said.

With that, Luke suddenly pulled his fist back ready to slam it into my boyfriend's face when I heard a loud voice boom out from the end of the hall. "Luke Mitchel Scott!"

I recognized that voice and I knew that Luke and Daniel were in for a whole world of trouble.

"You will let that boy go right this instance!" Mr. Rayne, my gym teacher bellowed.

Luke, who was obviously not willing to be intimidated by some teacher, shot back. "Make me! This little fagot's going to feel my fist in his face!" He had just started to throw his punch towards Jon, when all of a sudden Jon ducked and Luke's fist slammed into the locker. Luke let go of Jon and grabbed his hand in pain. "Ow, God damn it!" Luke screamed.

"That's enough crap from you mister Scott. Time to visit the principal," Mr. Rayne said, grabbing a hold of Luke's arm, Luke still screaming about his hand. "And you too mister Anderson," Mr. Rayne said to Daniel.

"Me? I didn't do nothin'!" Daniel said defiantly, releasing his grip on me.

"Exactly, you didn't," Mr. Rayne said, grabbing Daniel's arm with his other hand. "And remind me to have a talk with your English teacher. Seems she's not doing her job."

"Oh go screw yourself fagot lover!" Luke screamed.

"Big words from a little coward, now lets go," Mr Rayne said, and dragged both boys down the hall towards the principal's office.

"But my hand!" Luke complained futilely.

"Tough!" Mr. Rayne's voice bellowed down the hall as they disappeared.

Jon and I, as well as everyone else in the hallway simply stood and stared after them. No one was willing to look at us, and Jon and I didn't particularly feel very comfortable being in the spotlight as we were.

We gathered ourselves back up, and made our way as quickly as we could to second period. I was glad that we shared that class as well, as I don't think I would have been able to handle being alone from Jon until lunch.

Jon and I got settled in the second period class, and as we expected, we had arrived a little late. The teacher was not impressed and told us both to stay behind after class.

"But Ms. Thomas," I tried.

"No buts mister," she admonished me. "You will stay here after class is dismissed."

There was no reasoning with her, and Jon and I sat through the class, depressed and worried. The class seemed to go on forever, and we had just about given up hope that it would ever end, when the bell signaling the end of class rang.

Everyone packed up their books, and hightailed it out of there, obviously not wanting to stick around to see what wrath our history teacher had in store for us. Quite frankly, I wasn't too thrilled about sticking around myself. Ms. Thomas had a reputation for being a firebrand, and once she set her sights on you, there was no escaping.

Jon and I could only sit in our chairs and wait for her to lower the boom, pronouncing our fate. I didn't much care what she did to us, just so long as it didn't mean we would have to stay in the same room with her for detention. I don't think I could have survived that. Looking at Jon, I could see that he had the same worried expression that I did.

"Now, would you two mind telling me by what right you have coming into this classroom late and disrupting my lesson?" She asked us after the last student had left.

"It wasn't our fault Ms. Thomas," I said. "Luke and Daniel stopped us in the hallway and started to threaten us."

"Oh is that right?" she asked dismissively. "And I suppose that you did nothing to incur such threats?"

"What do you mean?" Jon asked.

"You both know damn well what I mean. How can the two of you expect anyone in this school to function and learn anything if you two can't even keep your homosexuality to yourselves? No one needs to hear about that. Personally I think it's disgusting."

"Excuse me Ms. Thomas, but like I told Luke earlier, I don't see how it's any of your business," Jon said.

"I'll be the judge of that, mister!" she practically screamed. "My own son came out to me and told me that he was gay, and you know what I did? I kicked his gay butt out on the street is what I did. As a teacher, I have the responsibility to guide my students and make sure they learn something. I can't do that if I have two homos going around kissing each other."

"Excuse me, but what Jon and I do in private is not your concern. And we certainly do not do anything like that in public, especially not in school," I told her.

"Don't you talk back to me mister. I'm going to be writing letters to both your parents and I'm giving you five days detention which you will spend with me after school each day."

"What? For what?" Jon yelled.

"Don't you dare raise your voice to me young man, or would you like to make that two weeks detention?" she asked, a smirk appearing on her face.

"No ma'am," Jon said more calmly.

"Good. You might just learn something. I will be giving those letters to you after school, when you report back to me for your first detention. Now get out of my sight!"

Jon and I gathered our books, and left the room as fast as we could.

"Jon what are we going to do?" I asked him as we headed down to the cafeteria.

"I know exactly what I'm going to do babe, and it's not going back to that classroom. I'm going to be calling my Mom."

Suddenly I got a wicked idea. "Babe, no. Not your mother," I said.

"Jay, I have to. She'll know what to do."

"Yeah, but I can think of one person better," I said smiling.

"Who?" Jon asked.

"Vivian."

A light suddenly went off in Jon's head and he began to smile, one as big as mine. "Oh man, Ms. Thomas won't know what hit her will she?"

"Nope. We'll go to her class as she told us to, but I'll ask Vivian to stay outside the room so she could listen in on what Ms. Thomas is saying. That ought to teach her good."

"Yeah it would," Jon said now feeling much better about our detention. "I wonder who her son was, the one that she kicked out on the street."

"I don't know babe, but I hope he's doing okay," I replied.

"Me too."

Jon and I made it to the cafeteria. The lineup for lunch was pretty much gone by now as most of the students had already been served. We both took a tray and put a couple sandwiches on it. I also took a salad, and a Sprite. Jon decided against a pop, and instead chose some juice, but he also picked up a salad.

Once we reached the cashier, we paid for our lunches and found a table off to the side, away from the rest of the students. Or at least, as far away from them as we could. When we sat down, a couple students stared at us, but we ignored them.

After we had finished lunch, we got up, and went to the nearest phone. From my bag I took out Vivian's business card, and picked up the receiver. Putting the quarter in the phone, I started to dial her number. It took a few rings before someone answered the phone.

"Halton Regional Police, can I help you?" a voice said on the other end.

"Yes, my name is Jason Finn. Can I speak with constable Vivian Caldwell please?"

"Just one moment please, I will put you through to her now," the voice on the other end said.

I had to wait for a few minutes before I heard Vivian's voice on the other end. "Hello, constable Caldwell speaking."

"Hi Vivian, it's Jason," I said.

"Oh hi Jason, aren't you in school?"

"Yeah, I'm calling you from the cafeteria right now."

"How was lunch?" she asked.

"Pretty bland, as always," I said, laughing a bit.

"Listen, Jon and I have a problem, and we need your help if you are able."

"Of course Jason, anything I can do I will," she replied.

I then went about explaining to her the events of the day including the cold shoulders we've been getting at school, and the confrontation with Luke and Daniel, and finally told her all about what was happening with our History teacher."

"Oh my God I don't believe it. Her?"

"What do you mean? Do you know Ms. Thomas?" I asked her.

"Yes, unfortunately I do. I had to go to her home one day because she had been involved in a domestic disturbance involving her son. Apparently she and her husband had kicked their son out of the house when he was sixteen years old because he was gay. He refused to press charges though, so there wasn't anything we could do about it. At sixteen he was legally able to be on his own. Last I heard he had found someone to live with and they eventually got married."

"Oh wow!" I exclaimed.

"Don't worry Jason, I'll be at your school before the end of your classes. I'm not going to let this woman try to ruin someone else's life. I had a feeling she'd not let her anger go towards her son, and I'm afraid she's taking it out on you two."

"Okay. We'll be in room 204, and thanks Vivian. We owe you big time for this," I said.

"Nonsense. This is something I'm going to enjoy doing," she replied. "Okay, I need to get going, and I have to begin paper work for this. You just sit tight and try to stay out of trouble for the rest of the day. I'll be there in a couple hours. Bye for now."

"Bye," I said, and hung up the phone.

"What did she say babe?" Jon asked me.

"She's going to be here for us babe. And it looks like she's dealt with Ms. Thomas before."

"Well I hope she can do something about her," Jon said.

"Oh don't worry," I replied smiling. "I think Vivian's not going to let her get away with anything. I wouldn't be surprised if Ms. Thomas will be fired after this."

"Oh that would be sweet!" Jon exclaimed.

The rest of the school day went by without incident, and by the end of the last class, Jon and I were getting a little nervous about our detention. When the final bell rang, we left the classroom and immediately bumped into Vivian who was waiting for us outside the room.

"Okay boys. You go to your detention, I'm going to follow you, but I'm going to stay out of sight. Don't worry. I'll be able to hear everything she says to you. I'll be right outside the room."

"Thanks again Vivian," I told her.

"Don't mention it Jason. This is one time I will actually enjoy being in school."

The three of us laughed over that, and then Jon and I made our way to Ms. Thomas' classroom for our detention. Vivian stayed out of sight as promised as we walked into the room. Ms. Thomas was sitting at her desk, doing some paperwork when she noticed us walking in.

"Good of you to come," she said sarcastically, then got up from her desk and handed Jon and I an envelope. "These are to be given to your parents when you go home today."

"What's in them?" I asked.

"Never mind what's in them, that's for your parents to read and not you. You'll find out soon enough when your parents read it trust me. Maybe they'll do something about you too being gay. And if they won't I certainly will."

"There's nothing you or anyone can do about it Ms. Thomas," I told her. "We're born gay, that's just how it is."

"Shut up you little know it all. Being gay is a choice, and I'm not going to let two people's lives be ruined because you choose to. So every day for the next five days you are going to spend time here and write lines until four-thirty. And here is what you will write. 'I will not break God's law. I am not gay'. You will write that until four-thirty."

"I will not!" I yelled. "That is stupid. I can't change who I am, just because you don't agree with it!"

"Don't you talk back to me you little fagot! You will write those lines until I feel that you no longer think you're gay. I don't care if it takes the rest of the school semester!" she yelled. "Now start writing!"

"I'm sorry but they will not be doing any such thing," Vivian said, walking into the room.

"What the hell are you doing here? This is my classroom and I decide what goes on in here," Ms. Thomas said hotly.

"You know who I am, and you know who I work for," Vivian said coldly. "More importantly, you know damn well what I can do right now."

"You can't do a damn thing miss goodie-goodie," Ms. Thomas said with a sneer on her face.

"Yes she can, because she is here with my permission." A new voice said, and I saw Mr. Jackson, the school's principal walk into the room.

"Mr. Jackson, these two boys are here because they caused a disturbance in my class, and they're in detention."

"Oh cut the crap Millie," Mr. Jackson said. "I know damn well about your feelings towards these two boys. What's pissing you off is that you came to this school and found out that your son is working here. Well too damn bad! He's staying, but you're not."

"What are you saying? You're defending these two?" Ms. Thomas asked incredulously.

"Yes. I just had to suspend two boys who are in your class for instigating a fight. I think you know which two I'm talking about too. And guess who they tried to pick a fight with? That's right, these two boys here. And do you have any idea who it is that stopped the fight from happening? Your son!"

"Mr. Rayne is Ms. Thomas' son?" I asked, bewildered.

"Yes I am," Mr. Rayne said, walking into the room.

"What the hell are you doing here Darryl?"

"Making sure you don't try the same thing with them that you tried with me. I should have pressed charges against you for what you did if I had known what you were going to do to these boys."

"You didn't have the guts," Ms. Thomas spat.

"No but I do," Mr. Jackson said. "Millie, you're fired. And since Vivian here is a police officer, and there are witnesses to your behavior, I also get the pleasure of having you charged with harassment, and child endangerment."

"What? You can't do that!" Ms. Thomas screamed.

"Millie Thomas, you have the right to remain silent," Vivian said, approaching her and taking out a pair of handcuffs as she finished reading Ms. Thomas her rights.

"Just you wait, I'll get these ridiculous charges dropped and I'll sue all of your asses!" Ms. Thomas screamed as she was led out of the room by Vivian.

"Boys, I'm sorry you had to see that," Mr. Jackson. "I'm especially sorry that we allowed her hatred to upset you two."

"It's okay Mr. Jackson," I told him. "I just want to know how it is that Jon and I have suddenly been outed in front of the whole school. It seems everyone knows and won't talk to us."

"I don't know either boys, but I'm going to find out, you can be sure of that. I will not tolerate bullying or prejudice to run this school. Not while I'm principal here."

"Mr. Jackson, I was meaning to ask someone, but I wanted to know who I had to see if I wanted to make a presentation during assembly next month," I asked.

"You mean the Anti-Bully rally we're having?" Mr. Jackson asked.

"Yeah, that one."

"Actually, you're looking at him," Mr. Jackson said, pointing to Mr. Rayne.

"You're in charge of it?" I asked him.

"Yes I am Jason. And as you guess, yes I am gay. You asked how I knew so much about you, well, your friend Simon has an uncle named Tim who just happens to be my husband."

"Oh wow!" I exclaimed. "Simon never told us about you."

"That's because I asked him not to. I didn't want the fact that he and I were family to interfere with his studies."

"Well, I guess that means we're pretty much outed to the whole school then," Jon said.

"I'm afraid so. Now, how about it if I take the both of you home," he offered.

"Sure, thanks," Jon said, still a little confused about everything that had happened.

"And boys, don't worry about what happened here today. I promise you, you'll never have to deal with that again. I'm going to make sure of that," Mr. Jackson said.

"Thank you sir. I just want to be able to go to school like everyone else and not have to worry about how any one thinks about Jon and me," I told him.

"And that is precisely what I want for all the students here Jason. Now, you two head on home, and we'll see you here tomorrow morning. And I expect you to do your best."

"We will sir, thank you," Jon said, before we left the room with Mr. Rayne. Leaving the school, he took us to his car and Jon and I climbed into the back seat. The ride back to our home was quick, since we didn't live too far from school. One thing I did notice though was that Mr. Rayne didn't even ask us for directions, he seemed to already know where we lived.

"Um, sir, how do you know where we live?" I asked him.

"Like I told you Jason, I know more about you than you think. Don't worry. You'll find out when we get you boys home. Is your father home today?" he asked.

"Um, yeah, I think he had the day off today, but he has to work all the rest of the week," I answered.

"Okay good, he should be home then. I need to talk to him and your mother about this."

A couple minutes later, we pulled into the driveway behind my father's car. Climbing out of Mr. Rayne's car, we led him to the front door where we opened it and walked inside.

My father was sitting on the couch in the living room watching TV when he saw us coming in. "Hey boys, how was school today?" Then he noticed Mr. Rayne standing there with us. "Darryl? What are you doing here?"

"You know Mr. Rayne Dad?" I asked him.

"Of course I do Son, he's my Nephew," my father replied, leaving both Jon and I standing there in shock.
