The Cost of Love
Part 2
The sun had set yet the light hovered reluctant to let the night descend. Mark dawdled as he approached his home, the warm summer evening discouraged haste. Through the open window of the music room came the sound of a lovely melody played on the piano, then that voice he knew so well giving it feeling that only an artist could convey. Mark stood listening, enchanted by the beauty of both the voice and the song. He saw the car in the park, it was Jerry's Toyota Marina and he realised that the song was another of his compositions, again romantic and memorable. It was Andy's unique interpretation that helped to make them so popular. Another album was being produced and Andy was practising.
Mark saw Jerry at the piano with Andy beside him as he passed the music room to enter the sitting the room.
"That's enough for today," Jerry said, "that's good, you seem to feel the emotion I am trying to convey."
"Why do you write so many love songs, is that the only emotion you want to convey?" Andy asked.
"It is the only emotion I strongly feel, I love Aaron so much."
"Is it the same for you for you seem to sing them so well? Is it because you are singing to Mark?" Andy looked out at the increasing gloom then turned to Jerry,
"I guess it's true, that guy means the whole world to me."
"Any one for coffee?" Mark called from the kitchen. He was joined by the others. "How are the new legs Jerry?"
"I'm getting used to them, I'm not stumbling so often. It's great being able to use the piano pedals at last, these latest prothesis are amazing for there has been so many technical improvements."
The composer the singer and his accompanist had a strong friendship due mainly to the constant public demand for more of Jerry's songs. The popularity of their albums meant they were often working together on Jerry's new compositions. Frequent requests for more came also from the CD producers. "Is Hans on your back for still another album?" Mark asked Jerry.
"As always, but I'm not interested until we have we have songs that are worth recording. We have other priorities, don't we Andy?"
"What is your major assignment for your performance unit at varsity?" Jerry asked Mark.
"Beethoven's 5th piano concerto the Emperor which I am to play with the orchestra. It is worth 50% of the final grade."
"Now that's a formidable work, I hope you get an A+ grade pass."
"No sweat, he'll get at least that." Andy's confidence made Mark smile. "I'm sure you will, I've heard you practising and already it sounds terrific. Anyway, how has your first year at varsity gone, has it been what you expected?"
Jerry shrugged his shoulders, "I guess so, I find some of it boring, like the history of music, but the introduction to composition is exciting stuff. I'm full of new ideas that I want to try."
"So I've noticed," Mark said, "I've heard some of them in those new songs. Be careful, popular songs usually have simple melodies that are easily remembered."
As soon as Jerry left, Andy suggested that it was time for bed. Mark held him closed and nibbled his ear. "I'm aching to make love to you my darling," he said. Andy felt Mark's cock,
"There's no doubt about it", he sighed, "whenever I'm about you always seemed to be aroused," Mark breathed deeply, "even the pheromones are active, you smell divine. Hell I can't wait."
Andy began to undo Mark's buttons, zip and belt causing his pants to fall. With a teasing laugh, he switched off the kitchen lights and raced upstairs to their bedroom leaving Mark to extricate himself from his trousers. Andy lay still totally relaxed as Mark's fingers caressed his body. His touching was so light that at times Andy could barely feel it. He felt he was drifting into another dimension of awareness, barely conscious of Mark's attention. The comfort of Mark's soothing touch soon made him sleep.
For the duration of the return journey, Bob and Eric discussed their impressions of Andy and Mark and their home. "Mark is a lot less excitable than Andy," Bob said. "Once Andy realised that I had reservations about being a member of his family he became much more subdued."
"Mark is much more phlegmatic and gave more careful thought to the implications of your discovery," Eric replied.
"The more I was with Andy the more I grew to like him, Eric it is going to take time."
Eric's parents wanted to hear about the weekend, asking many searching questions until the boys satisfied their curiosity. Ivan looked a little annoyed as he said, "I've forgotten to give Bob important information. There have been further developments concerning the death of your mother and the police want to interview you again. A member of the CID will be calling tomorrow night at 7."
Bob looked puzzled, "I wonder why, what more can I possibly tell them?"
"Detective Inspector Roberts was not prepared to give me an explanation," Ivan said. "He is certainly anxious to see you."
The school was delighted that the first XV had beaten the college reputed to have the best secondary school rugby team in the district. They were congratulated by the Principal at assembly with Bob and Eric scores being mentioned. Frequently they were recipients of students appreciation While Bob appreciated the accolades his thoughts were about the interview that night.
Promptly at 7 Inspector Roberts arrived to talk to Bob. He made it clear that the interview was private and so Ivan left them together in the lounge. Robert's calm manner encouraged Bob to relax.
"Naturally you are wondering why the police are still involved with the death of your mother, well it seems there is more we need to know to satisfy us that all is well. I would like you to give me more information about your parents, have you any objections?"
Bob said he had none while wondering what more there was to tell. Roberts then asked whether he had any objection to him taping the interview. Bob said he had none.
"Would you say your parents were compatible with a good relationship?"
"I've no reason to think otherwise."
"Was you father ever violent towards your mother?"
"Never. He was never violent, not even to me even though I knew he didn't like me much. I wondered why and now I know."
"Oh why was that?"
"He was not my father, my mother was pregnant by another man at the time he married her."
"After you left, you saw your mother often. At that time, did she ever mention that her husband had assaulted or abused her in any way?"
Bob was surprised by the question and emphatically replied, "never, he was not a violent man. She never mentioned him, not even when I could see that her depression was getting worse. I asked her why Dad had not taken her to a doctor but she would not give me an answer. I was worried. I wanted to talk to my father about her but I knew he hated me so much, it was impossible."
"Why was it impossible?"
"He hated me when I admitted that I was gay. He tried to hit me but I countered the blow, twice, when I refused to obey his order to give up my friendship with Eric."
"So he tried to hit you?"
"Yes, twice, but I only protected myself from the blows, I did not hit him. I just left when he ordered me to out."
"Did you notice any bruises, cuts or grazes on your mother?"
"None." Then he remembered one of the later visits when he noticed a bruise on her forehead. Robert's noticed his hesitation.
"Are you sure?"
Well once I did, a small bruise on her forehead. It was the day before she died."
"Did you ask her about it?"
"No, it was her anxiety and tension that worried me."
"Thank you Bob, you have been most helpful. Now I have some confidential information for you. We are investigating further evidence that forensic have provided. It appears your mother did not drown, as we thought, she may have been murdered, possibly by your father."
There was a look of absolute disbelief on Bob's face. "Never, Dad would never do that."
"We found his wallet on the bank of the river and the footprints in the mud match those of his shoes.. Also the cause of death was due to a blow on the head, there was no water in her lungs. We all assumed it was a suicide."
Bob looked horrified, it was beyond his comprehension and understanding. "I can't believe it, it's not in his nature. Why would Dad want to kill his wife? Although Dad's love was never demonstrative, I never had reason to believe he did not love her. His attitude towards me was the same. It is understandable now that I know I am not his son. I guess it made it easier for him to throw me out. I can't understand why he should want to harm my mother."
Roberts stopped the tape and returned it to his briefcase before standing.
"We may learn more when we interview him tomorrow. Don't let these developments worry you. I may have to see you again later. Thank you for being so cooperative, it is much appreciated." He shook Bob's hand and left.
Bob was shocked and it showed as he returned to Eric and his parents in the dining room. They did not say anything as they waited for him to offer information. Bob seemed to be unaware of them as he repeatedly clenched his fists.
"It's not possible, why should he kill her, why, she was a good wife to him.? Was I the reason, was it because of me, oh God surely not."
Bob doubled over in his chair, shaking, with his head on his knees, Eric knelt in front of him. "What's happened Bob?"
"They think Dad killed Mum. I don't believe it. He couldn't, he wouldn't." He stood, took a deep breath then said to Ivan and Doris, "they loved each other, why would he harm my mother?"
Eric gently eased him back onto his chair.
"There's much more to learn before we know the reason for your mother's death, why your father killed her," Ivan said. "There's nothing you can do until the police see you again and I'm sure it will be very soon. Of course you are confused and upset, but you have to be strong and hang in there. No doubt the reason for this tragedy will be known once there is an arrest."
Bob's brief weak smile indicated his agreement. "I guess you're right, I'll have to wait, after all nothing will return my mother to me."
Bob appreciated Eric's comforting arms as much as his attentive listening to his speculations about his father until he realised Eric was asleep, then he also drifted off.
Next morning, before they left for school, Inspector Roberts called again and took Bob into the lounge.
"The police arrested your father last night and he will appear in the district court this morning charged with the murder of your mother. No doubt he will apply for bail. This is going to make life difficult for you, for the press will be seeking interviews and want to include you in the publicity this case is bound to create."
"What should I do?" Bob asked, panic in his voice and looking alarmed.
"Claim ignorance, stay cool and resist pressure, and there will be lots of pressure. Its good to see that you have lots of support from the Dawsons. I'm sure they will help to protect you."
As soon as Roberts left Bob told Eric and Doris the reason for the visit. He looked very worried.
"We know you can tough it out," Doris said, "and we are here to support you, wont we Eric?"
Eric looked at Bob, "I know I will, come on Bob or we will be late for school."
Doris was tempted to leave the phone off the hook as the endless calls seeking Bob began soon after mid-morning. She felt relief when Bob and Eric arrived home. No sooner had she warned Bob of the many calls from the press, when the doorbell rang. Eric answered the door,, it was reporter from the local paper wanting to speak to Bob. Bob took him and a photographer into the lounge. He firmly denied any knowledge of the arrest, the possible reasons and refused to answer questions about his relationship with his father. The reporter had heard about his eviction and his questions implied a possible connection but Bob firmly replied to his questions with "no comment." Within the hour, three more reporters had called, one with a photographer. Bob was similarly uncooperative, continuing to deny knowing the reason for his father's arrest.
Eric immediately collected the evening newspaper as soon as it was delivered. The arrest was front page news. He read the report to Bob and Doris. It told of the arrest of David Dickinson for the murder of his wife June Dickinson, that he had pleaded 'not guilty' and sought bail. His lawyer had sought bail on the grounds that his client did not have a police record and his exemplary character. After referring the case to the High Court, the magistrate granted Dickinson bail until his case was heard, subject to him reporting twice a week to the police. The case was also reported on the 6 o'clock TV news. Immediately Bob had a phone call from Andy who sounded very concerned and insisted that he tell him everything about what had happened.
"I want to be with you if you have to appear in court or if you have any problems. I really do want to support you, being your brother is important to me." Bob had not expected to hear such an earnest appeal from Andy for he did not feel the same emotional ties to Andy. Bob returned to the lounge where the others were watching TV. The news hour was ending when the doorbell rang. Ivan opened the door to Detective Inspector Roberts who asked to speak to Bob. He showed him into the dining room and called Bob.
"I expect you will have seen the press report of today's proceedings concerning your father." Bob said he had. "The motive and evidence will not be disclosed until your father appears in the High Court, but in view of your involvement, it has been agreed by the magistrate and your father's lawyer, and, after some persuasion from them both, by your father, that you be told what your father has told the police."
Roberts waited for Bob to comment but as he said nothing, he continued. "Your father since his marriage has always been a very disappointed man who considered his wife was to blame. Over the years the disappointment turned to anger which he suppressed until another disappointment caused his violence. He knows that you are not his son, that his wife was pregnant to another man when he married her. His expectation that he would have children of his own were dashed when your birth was difficult and his wife learnt that she was unable to have any more children. He never recovered from that disappointment but he tried to convince himself that you were an acceptable substitute for the son he could never have. Then he discovered you are homosexual which he vehemently abhors. That is why he was so angry with you. He blamed your mother for his disappointment and the final disgrace, a gay son. He accused your mother for denying him a family of which he could be proud. He vented his anger on your mother, frequently abusing her physically and emotionally. That was the reason for her deteriorating health. One night he lost all self-control, killed her and tried to make it look like a suicide. He might have succeeded but he dropped his wallet and there was other incriminating evidence "
Bob stared at Roberts without seeing him. His face was as white as a sheet, his hands were tightly clenched. He shook as if he was having a seizure, then slumped forward and would have fallen to the floor if Roberts had not grabbed him. He had fainted. Roberts rushed into the lounge and asked for a glass of water. Eric quickly took it into Bob. He was upset to see him unconscious. With his arm supporting him Eric held the glass to Bob's lips as consciousness returned. He slowly sipped the water, then he noticed Roberts looking very worried. In his despair he said,
"You mean I am the cause of this tragedy, first my birth then my sexuality. I've killed my mother, made my father a murderer. My God, why me. It's not my fault, tell me it is not my fault."
"That's right Bob, it's not your fault," Roberts said. "Your father's obsession and extreme prejudice were the cause, your father is mentally ill" Roberts looked very distressed. "I'm sorry I have had to tell you this tonight. You have got to know why your mother died, you need to know who to put the blame where it rightly belongs for your peace of mind." Robert turned to Eric. "I must go now, Bob needs a lot of support, I'll keep in touch."
Eric showed Roberts to the door and quickly returned to Bob. He held him close comforting him before they returned to the lounge. Ivan and Doris waited for Bob to offer any information. He looked drawn and gaunt.
"It was my father who killed her. He blamed my mother for his disappointment." Bob told them what Roberts had said. "He says my father is mentally ill. I never knew that was the reason for his attitude towards me, his indifference. His sense of loss over all those years eventually affected his mind. I was the cause and I did not know it until tonight."
"You're not to blame," Doris said. "He could have loved you just the same and he chose not to. Deep down he may have felt that you are an inadequate substitute for the son he might have had. When he learnt that you are gay, that provided him with the reason to reject you. No doubt your mother protested, for you are her only child and provided the love that she missed from her husband. It is a sorry situation when a man is destroyed by an obsession to have his own child."
Bob leant forward in his chair. His strong emotions belied his words "I am not sorry for him, in fact I don't care what happens to him now. I'm not bitter or angry, all I want is for the whole affair to end so that I can forget these terrible days and get on with my life."
"I hope that life includes me Bob," Eric said. "You know I love you very much."
"I know, I know, you have certainly shown me that during these past weeks, you all have and I very much appreciate it." He hugged Eric then said he was very tired and bid them goodnight. Ruth looked worried.
"That boy is very disturbed, he's in shock. "He's bitter alright, he's very angry. Eric keep an eye on him, I have a feeling he could say and do things he could later regret."
Bob quickly walked across the quadrangle to his next class. He turned when he felt someone touch his arm, it was the Head's secretary. She told him the Head wanted to see him right away. Bob was surprised to see Detective Inspector Roberts with the Head when he was shown into his office. He was asked to take a seat.
Roberts looked very uncomfortable. "Bob I wish I did not have to see you again this morning, I have more tragic news for you, I'm sorry to have to tell you that your father is dead. He took his own life." He waited a moment expecting a reaction from Bob, there was none. "I called on him this morning and found him in the garage in his car with the engine running and with a hose from the exhaust into the car. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning. We tried to resuscitate him but without success. His body has been taken to the hospital morgue. I'm sorry I again have to bring you unpleasant news."
Bob was unmoved, showing no signs of distress. "So am I Mr. Roberts. Last night your information about my father was a terrible shock, as you know, but I have now recovered thanks to the support of my friend and his family. I am relieved that this death will end this terrible episode in my life. He was a surrogate father without love for me. I hate him for what he did to my mother and now I want to forget him and start a new life."
The Head looked anxiously at Bob. The complete absence of any grief almost indifference on hearing of the death of his father was unnatural from his experience. He knew he needed to assist Bob.
"I'm sorry I have to ask you to identify him, for the record you know, do you feel able to?" Roberts said.
"Sure, I understand, right away?"
The memory of the same procedure at the morgue for his mother upset Bob. When he saw his father, he felt cold and indifferent. He felt glad that he no longer needed to acknowledge him to be his father. "That is David Dickinson, the man I called my father," he said to Roberts, then immediately left the room.
Neither spoke as Roberts drove Bob at his request, back to school. Roberts broke the silence.
"I made sure all lights were off and the house was secure before I left. I have been told that you own the property so here is the key to the house." He hand the key to Bob.
"I presume I can go ahead and make the funeral arrangements?" Bob inquired.
"Yes forensic have completed their examination. I'm truly sorry the case has ended this way."
"I'm not. It has made it lot easier for me to make a clean break from Feilding and its unhappy memories."
Bob's thoughts were bleak as he slowly cycled home. What he had to do would be done without any feeling for the deceased, it was an obligation for a stranger. Bob called at the funeral director's office on his way home from school. The Director recognised him and was about to offer him his sympathy when Bob abruptly interrupted him.
"I would like you to provide for the cremation of my father David Dickinson, he died last night, his body is at the hospital morgue." He sounded cold and offhanded, as if he was purchasing a pound of butter.
"Certainly, when do you want the service to take place?" the funeral director replied sounding subdued by Bob's manner.
"As soon as possible at the crematorium chapel, and there wont be any service. There will be no death notices in the press or flowers and it will be private with only my close friends present."
The Director looked very surprised and a little confused. He asked Bob to confirm his instructions. "Do you wish to choose the casket?" he asked.
"No, it will be the least expensive. I am the only member of the family and responsible for all arrangements and expenses. Detective Inspector Roberts will provide you with any further details including the death certificate. Send the account to my lawyer, Mr Stevens of Stevens and Williams. Is there anything else you need to know?"
The Director said there wasn't, that he had his phone number when he needed to contact him. "I think the funeral could be held tomorrow, I will let you know very soon." Bob left immediately without any further acknowledgment.
Bob left his books in his bedroom before seeking Doris. He showed no emotion as he told her about his father's suicide and the arrangements he had made for his funeral. She was disturbed by Bob's casual attitude and apparent indifference to any impact his father's death might have on others. When he had finished telling her, she made no comment as she continued to prepare dinner. Bob began to realise that she was not pleased. The silence was too much for him.
"What's wrong, its my responsibility to arrange the funeral and I hate having to do anything for that monster. I want to get it over and done with as soon as possible."
"Even though you may now hate your father, he did provide for you for 18 years. He cared for your mother even though he blamed her, you do have much to thank him for. His obsession caused his mental illness and there was no one to help him. Bob have you no compassion at all for your Dad?" She sounded angry. Bob looked and felt most uncomfortable. Doris continued. "Was your Dad a Christian?"
"He never went to church but I saw him reading a Bible at times."
"Well surely he is entitled to a Christian commitment. Don't let your bitterness destroy what is right and proper for a man, no matter what he has done." Before Bob could reply she angrily questioned him. "Why are you rejecting us, denying us, your friends, the right to be with you at such a difficult time? Bob you are not the only one affected by this tragedy. Eric is also very upset. We want to help you."
Bob was upset. "I had no idea, I'm sorry, I'm so overcome by my own tragedy that I have given no thought for others."
When Eric arrived home, he immediately felt the tension between Bob and his mother. Doris turned to Eric. "Don't you think Bob's father's entitled to Christian rites at the end?"
"I suppose so," Eric replied while wondering what all the fuss was about.
"Does the school have a chaplain who would take the funeral service?" she asked.
"No, but I know one, but he is gay." Eric grinned, "now that would be ironic if he were to take David Dickinson's funeral."
"Do you think he would?" Bob asked.
Eric found the phone number and called Steven Evans. He was pleased to hear Steven's encouraging reply to his request and suggestion that he visit. Eric asked him to wait. He turned to Bob. "Steven has agreed to take the service if you so wish. Well do you?"
Bob looked at Doris. "I know you are right, I'm being too inconsiderate, Ok Eric, tell him I would like to see him."
Eric conveyed Bob's request and was told he would call that evening.
"I think you should tell Eric about the arrangements Bob, and remember how I feel about them" Doris said.
They sat on their beds while Bob told Eric about his visit to the funeral director and about Doris' reaction to the arrangements he had made.
"I can understand where Mum is coming from, you are being too tough on your friends. I believe you are right, it should be a private service in view of the circumstances. My parents want to be with you, as do I of course. Andy and Mark will be appalled if they are not with you, and Luke and his parents. It's you, not your father that really matters, funerals are more important for the living than the dead. In spite of how you feel about your father, give him a decent send off." Eric hugged Bob.
Bob thought about Eric's views, it made a lot of sense. He was right he was too inconsiderate, totally thoughtless about how others were involved.
"Of course you and Doris are right," Bob said. "I'm so bitter all I want is to get it over and done with. Sorry Eric, I am bloody thoughtless."
They heard the phone then Doris calling Bob. It was the funeral director to tell him that the funeral would be at 2pm the next day. Bob told him he wanted some changes, the casket was to be more expensive and to place flowers on it. He also told him that there would be a chaplain taking the service.
Bob spent some time phoning Luke and Andy telling them about his father's suicide and the funeral arrangements. They all said they would be at the service.
Steven Evans was in his early thirties, dressed casually and with a warm personality. Eric welcomed him with a hug before introducing him to Bob.
"I'm so sorry Bob to hear about your loss. I hope I can help you," Steven said. "I read about the death of your mother in the local paper, and now that of your father."
"I'm not a believer," Bob replied, "but I think my father could have been. I saw him reading a Bible from time to time."
"It's a challenge to believe in the authenticity of the Bible and the relevance of the Faith in our lives these days," he replied. "Even so I will try to prepare an appropriate service in view of your situation."
Bob's cynical laugh surprised Steven. "Now that will be difficult, he hated gays and I'm gay, as is my half brother and our friends. That's why this dreadful business happened. Is a Christian service appropriate for a fundamentalist homophobe?"
"I think so for the service is for the living not the dead, he is only the reason for it. I'm privileged to be asked to take this service, I hope it will provide some comfort especially to you Bob. I understand it is a private service and you would like it to be short, so would a reading, a few appropriate thoughts followed by a prayer and then the commitment be sufficient?" Bob said it would be fine. Steven then said to Eric "I haven't seen you at the club lately Eric, too busy I guess."
Eric grinned. "I', fully occupied with my lover," he looked at Bob. How's your gorgeous Tony?"
"Too gorgeous for my comfort, thank God he is besotted with me." Bob was intrigued by this sharing of gay interests and wondered what more of Eric's private life he had still to discover.
Andy and Mark arrived at the Dawson's mid morning before calling at Mark's home. The Dawsons knew Mark as a previous friend of Eric's and warmly welcomed him. Mark introduced Andy as his partner and Bob's half-brother. Andy hugged Bob and remained with him in the hall as the others went into the lounge.
"I'm very worried about you," Andy said. "I know you have had a terrible shock and I can see you are quite distressed."
"I don't grieve for my father, I am angry because of the way he treated my mother and then for killing her. I hate him and could never forgive him for blaming her for his lost family. There is a lot more I want to tell you later." Bob's emphatic reply troubled Andy.
They interrupted Ruth as they entered the lounge, she was telling Mark that his mother had invited them to his home after the funeral. "How do you feel about that Bob," she asked.
"That is most kind of her and I would like to accept the invitation." he replied. "It would also provide me with an opportunity to ask for help with the disposal of the contents of the house."
The conversation was somewhat subdued with no one wanting to raise issues that would upset Bob. After inquiries about Mark's welfare and his life in Wellington, Eric reminded Andy that Mark's parents expected them to arrive before lunch and they should be leaving. Andy hugged Bob and kissed him while reminding him that they were here to support him. I'll be with you at the service Bob", he said squeezing his arm. He seemed loath to leave him.
The Turner family were pulling into the Crematorium Chapel car park as the Dawsons arrived. They entered the chapel together and were escorted to the front pews by the funeral director. Andy sat on one side of Bob, Eric on the other. The casket was placed on a bier with a bouquet of white roses on it. Steven Evans came forward and shook hands with everyone, giving Bob's hand a special squeeze to accompany his encouraging smile.
Steven opened the service using the funeral service from the Anglican Prayer Book and followed this with a reading from Romans 8, 31-39. He then spoke of the impact of death on the bereaved appealing for understanding why we mourn and how to acquire peace and acceptance of the consequences of the death. It had a different meaning for each of them, according to their appreciation of Bob's attitude towards his father. Bob kept thinking of Doris' appeal for his compassion and understanding. Could he feel sorry for his father, was it possible to forgive him? He acknowledged a growing ambivalence but it was terribly difficult not to hate him. Steven's prayer was simple and forthright seeking Divine guidance and support for them all, including himself. As the words of the commitment were ending, very slowly the casket was lowered into the bier and a curtain was slowly drawn in front of it.. The service ended with the blessing.
Steven left the rostrum to speak to Bob and Mark who introduced him to Andy. He immediately told Andy he was one of his fans. Ruth Turner interrupted him and invited him to join them for afternoon tea. Steven looked at his watch. I promised my partner Tony to collect him in a few minutes to take him home," he replied.
"Bring him too," Mark said, "I'm sure we would all like to meet him."
"I know he would like to met Andy," Steven replied, "Ok, thank you." Steven moved on to speak to others while Bob, Mark, Andy and Eric returned to their cars.
Like at so many funerals, it provided a opportunity to get to know one-another better. The Dawsons and the Turners appreciated this and were soon sharing concerns for Bob's situation. Ruth and Doris agreed they should offer him help. It was Ivan's loud "what do you intend to do with the house Bob," that caused everyone to stop talking and wait for his reply.
"I'm going to sell it as soon as possible. I intend to leave Feilding and begin a new life in Wellington as soon as the school year ends."
This was news to Eric, they had not discussed it, and to Andy who was secretly delighted.
"Doris and I would like to help you to dispose of the contents that you don't want to keep and prepare the house for sale." There was a look of relief and gratitude as Bob accepted their offer.
"Maybe I can help as well," Steven said, "I know several organisations that will appreciate donations of clothing and furnishings."
"I hope you keep the car," Eric said anxiously.
"But I can't drive," Bob replied.
"No sweat, I can, Dad taught me and I'm sure he will do the same for you, wont you Dad?"
Eric grinned, "I bet Bob will be more calm than you were. Shall we have a go soon?"
Bob thought about the Toyota Corolla in the garage, it was 2 years since his father bought it and it looked like new. It was his father's pride and joy.
"Are you sure Ivan? That would be really something, to have wheels, oh boy you've made my day." He was delighted and hugged Ivan. "I promise to be a conscientious and careful learner, better than Eric." He grinned at his mate.
"You and Eric are coming to stay next week, aren't you?" Andy sounded anxious, as if they might have forgotten. "Mark and I thought we could stay at the beach house for a few days before going on to Wellington."
Bob confirmed that they would be arriving on Saturday. Eric's offer to drive the Toyota he accepted with delight.
Why don't you and Tony visit us," Andy said to Steven, "come for the day."
"And the night", Mark added with a grin, "but you will have to share a bed."
"Thank you, how about it Tony?" Steven replied.
Tony swept a strand of his shoulder length blonde hair from his face and with a cheeky grin replied, " But we can't both sleep in the same bed, well just this once." He fluttered his eyelids at Steven. "I know we would be delighted."
Ruth's scrumptious baking made the afternoon tea a memorable occasion, even more so for Bob as he realised he would be getting a lot of help. He was thrilled that at last he could learn to drive.
The next day Bob called on his solicitor Mr. Stevens. He was told that his father's will left everything to his wife and in the event of her death, it would go to Bob. The car was his most valuable asset. There was $10,000 in a bank account but after meeting funeral expenses, this would be reduced considerably. Bob asked him to finalise matters as quickly as possible then asked him to act on his behalf for the sale of the house.
In the evening Ruth and Doris with Ivan and John spent time with Bob as they went through the his house. The building was in good condition and well maintained on a quarter acre section. John believed it could get a good price. Bob said he wanted to get rid of all the contents apart from what belonged to him, and his mother's personal items like jewellery.
"I think you will want to keep those things you hold dear," Doris said. "There's no hurry and when you return at the end of the break, take time to look through them."
Ivan and John went with Bob to the garage. The silver grey car had recently been cleaned and looked like new. "Dave Dickinson took good care of his car, I would keep it if I were you," John said.
"Garage it here until the house is sold, it will be better protected," Ivan said as he examined the interior. "Also it will be less tempting for Eric who always seems to want to borrow my wheels."
Bob read out Eric the directions given to him by Mark to help them find the beach cottage at Raumati. They had just passed through Paraparaumu. "Turn into the next road on the right until we reach the shops, then turn left." Eric turned off State Highway 1 "I've only been in this car once before, now its mine." Bob's declaration sounded more like that of a trophy winner.
Eric grinned. "I can't wait to see you behind the wheel."
"Now look out for number 67, it should be on the right," Bob said as they turned the corner and carefully examined the letter boxes of the passing houses. "There it is," he shouted. Eric saw a small brick house in the center of a large lawn. He stopped in front of the door from which emerged Andy and Mark with welcoming cries. They both hugged Eric and Bob and took them into the lounge. It was a large room furnished with easy chairs, a convertible settee and a baby grand piano. Two bedrooms were off one side and the kitchen and bathroom with the toilet and a wet area off the other. Floor to ceiling windows with ranch slider doors opened onto the back lawn and the sand-hills, beyond which they heard sound of the sea.
"Had a good trip?" Mark asked as he took the bags into the bedroom which looked out onto the back lawn.
"Great," Eric replied, "the car is a beauty, very comfortable with a quiet powerful motor. I envy Bob."
Andy's delight at seeing Bob again was apparent and his persistent chatter gave Bob few opportunities to speak. Then he realised his verbosity.
"Shut up Andy, as usual you talk too much," he said to himself.
Bob grinned. "I don't mind, I keep telling myself, 'this is your brother, for better for worse'." He hugged Andy. "I believe I like him more every time I see him. I wonder what he thinks of me?"
"I'll tell you later," Andy replied as he followed Eric and Mark into the bedroom. Eric tested the springs of the bed.
"Bob's sex is very energetic, I would hate to have the bed collapse.
"Not a chance, it has been tested many times by Andy's randy mates," Mark replied.
"And yours darling," Andy reminded him. "Now lunch is ready when you are. The you-know-what is in the laundry, all mod cons provided these days in beach cottages, no more long drops." Mark and Andy left them to unpack.
Eric and Bob changed into beach gear, brief shorts and unbuttoned floral shirts, much the same as Andy and Mark were wearing. At the end of the lounge, near the kitchen, was a large table set for lunch. Mark asked them to be seated and to help themselves to the mixed salads, an assortment of cold meats, tomatoes, boiled potatoes and bread rolls.
"We thought you might like a swim this afternoon," Andy said. "Sorry we have to wear togs near the houses. Tomorrow we will take you further along the beach where you can be au naturel."
Eric's eyes lit up, "boy oh boy, at last I can indulge in skinny dipping., a rare treat."
Andy sniffed. "You can indulge in a lot more if you feel so inclined, but be careful KY and sand is not a good combination. Mark took days to sooth his damaged dick, poor Mark."
"Your arse suffered too, it was sex prohibited 'til repairs completed," Mark added.
Bob giggled at the thought of them both responding to the demanded urges in spite of the irritant.
"Tonight we dine with Paul and Peter. Paul wants to talk to Bob about the estate and other things." Andy held Bob's arm. "I do hope you will be able to accept Paul as a substitute father as I do. I know he treats me like a son and maybe he might feel the same about you."
Bob felt that Andy had completely accepted him as a brother but was still anxious that his expectations might not be fulfilled. He did not want to be pressured by Andy's plans for his involvement with Paul to be like his own. Bob's experience of the father he had known left him not wanting a repeat. It had been his mother who helped him make decisions and, now that he was on his own, he did not expect any help from others.
Wearing brightly coloured bikini briefs, they followed the track through the sand-hills. The heavy perfume of flowering lupins and the periodic explosions of ripe seed pods with the incessant metallic chirping of cicadas filled the air. The oppressive heat from the sand suddenly lifted as they reached the beach and a breeze off the sea. The broad shoulders, narrow waist, muscular buttocks and thighs held Andy's admiration as he followed Bob across the beach to the surf. His physique was superior to his own and he was envious. He caught up to Bob. "I'll race ya," he shouted and sped into the tumbling breakers. They dived under the waves to reach the larger ones further out, then body surfed to the shore. Eric and Mark were doing the same, hooting with delight as each wave swept them ashore. Bob felt someone tugging at his briefs and they dropped to his ankles as a large wave broke over him sweeping him off his feet. He saw them being swept out to sea by the under-tow and heard Eric's gleeful laughter. Then someone grabbed his cock and another jumped on top of him. He struggled to reach the surface and air while they tried to duck each other. The melee soon had them exhausted with each trying to escape to the shore. Bob remained behind trying to hide his nudity under the water. Mark then challenged him to join them but Bob refused.
"There's no other way, we'll have o cover him," Mark said. "Come on guys surround him until we get home. They returned to the surf and with Bob in the middle, they linked arms enclosing him. There was much hilarity as bare bodies buffeted Bob making him fully erect. The others were similarly aroused stretching their briefs proving they were all well endowed. The minute they were home they discarded their bikinis while Bob rushed into the shower to remove the sand and salt water. The others joined him and began to wash each other. Mark knelt in front of Andy and began to blow him. Eric did the same to Bob. Once they had come, they swapped their roles.
"That was mighty," Andy said. "Weren't you and Eric into sex?" he asked Mark. "Do you want to revisit those days?"
Mark looked at Eric who shrugged his shoulders before turning to Bob. "Should I, these guys are special and it was randy Mark who persuaded me that it was Ok to enjoy gay sex."
Bob grinned, "Should brothers have sex?"
"Why not, I bet Andy would have been into your pants if you had grown up together," Mark replied. "He can never get enough of it," he added as he slapped Andy's bare bottom.
"He should talk, he's a bloody bull in bed," Andy replied derisively.
"Think about it guys," Mark said as he took a towel off the rail.
Bob saw a stack of CDs next to a portable radio-CD player and was sorting them when Eric came looking for him.
"What have you discovered."
"Not our kind of music, its nearly all classics, mainly tenor's albums," Bob replied.
"Well what did you expect, Andy is considered to be one of the best up and coming tenors."
The last disc was Andy's second album, 'Forever Yours'. "Have you heard this?" he asked Eric. "That disc was on the charts, they were raving about it at school, specially the girls. I only listen to groups like the BeeGees, Feelers, Boyzone and of course Tina Turner."
"Of course Tina Turner was your heart-throb. Shall we give Andy a burl?" Bob did not wait for Eric's agreement as he loaded the player. The opening number was 'Everlasting Love', the song that had made him famous. Bob had never heard the disc before and listened intently. He liked it and followed the words of each song printed in the accompanying booklet. He noticed that they were all composed by Jeremy Weston. One very much appealed to him called 'Everlasting Love'. He repeated it three times and began to sing along with it. Another voice and the piano joined him, it was Mark.
"You like it?" Mark asked.
"Very much, there's something special about it. The words are unusual."
"I wrote them, it was after Andy thought I was more interested in another guy and I thought I had lost him." Mark shuddered. "God I was devastated."
"You are very much in love?" Bob sought confirmation of what he already surmised.
"Completely, Andy means everything to me."
"Its not an infatuation then?"
"It never has been. I was the hesitant one, it grew ever stronger and still does."
Eric listened to Mark and Bob's conversation, he began to appreciate that this was a relationship far stronger than that which he felt for Bob.
"God no, our love is much deeper." Mark grinned. "You might find that hard to believe the way we sometimes scrap, especially during practises."
Andy joined them, "He is a slave driver, I daren't make a mistake, he is a perfectionist."
"Would you sing Everlasting Love for us?" Eric asked.
Mark played the introduction then Andy filled the room with his beautiful voice. Bob's lips were forming the words as he sang. At the end, Andy invited them to sing along with him while he stood behind them giving encouragement. Bob and Eric looked pleased with themselves for they felt their effort was not too bad.
"You guys have quite good voices with a lot of potential, with a little training we could make quite an attractive ensemble," Mark said. "Are you interested?"
"You're not serious?" Eric thought the idea was crazy, although he remembered he had once dreamed of being Boy George or Elton John.
"From whom did Andy inherit his musical talent?" Bob asked Mark.
"Paul says it is from his father, he had a good voice. You sound as if you might have inherited it as well. Are you interested in sharing it with us?" Bob was non-committal and was left to ponder Mark's inquiry.
Andy answered a phone call from Steven Evans, inquiring whether he and Tony could visit the next day. He was assured it would be fine and that they were looking forward to seeing them again. He reminded the others that Paul and Peter were expecting them at about 5.
"Their home is next door but they also have an apartment in town, we see a lot of them when we come here. Now that Dad is gone, Paul believes he has to take his place."
"Do you mind?" Bob asked.
"No. I love him as if he was my Dad. Dad was so often overseas when Paul looked after me." He hesitated before adding, "he is likely to treat you the same. Now that he knows that you are the son of his best friend, he will want to take care of you as well. Dad and he were very close. I believe he was in love with Dad."
"Was your Dad bi?"
"It was never admitted but I always believed he might have been."
The house next door was quite large with floor to ceiling windows. They went through a small gate into a beautiful garden with immaculate lawns. Peter and Paul were sitting beneath a gaudy sun umbrella. When they saw them approaching Paul shouted a welcome and he and Peter gave each of them a hug with a kiss for Andy and Mark.
"Don't we get a kiss?" Bob asked.
"Oh Paul I wondered when the laddie would be less coy," Peter said. He took hold of Bob and pressed his lips to his. Bob responded equally positively. Eric followed but less enthusiastically. Paul with a broad grin also kissed them.
"So what's your tipple?" Peter inquired.
"A cold beer," came from Eric and the others asked for the same.
Condensation dripped from the large glasses offered them from the silver tray by Peter. Bob slowly sipped his beer as he studies his hosts. They were in their 50s, well built, both with dark hair showing flecks of grey. Paul was more handsome with a serious manner whereas Peter made a joke of issues, if kindly. Paul was clearly the more dominant personality. Bob liked them both though he thought Paul was more attractive. Paul shifted to an empty chair beside Bob.
"Can you spend some time with me tomorrow morning? There are some very important matters that I need to talk over with you." Bob said he was free and so it was arranged that he would call at 10. For a time they discussed generalities then Paul asked him about his plans for the next year.
"Andy has told me that you intend to leave Feilding and move to Wellington. He expects you to live with him and Mark."
"I would liked to. I am hoping Eric will come with me and also go to varsity."
"So what degree is it to be?"
"Law is my first choice, a business degree if law proves to be beyond me. My grades have been above average so I am hoping I can manage law."
Paul offered a lot of encouragement and reassurance before telling him that he had a law degree. "I met Andy's father at law school, we were both freshmen, we became very close friends." He lapsed into the silence of strong memories as Bob waited for him to continue. "I know I loved him very much but Philip was bi and when he met and married Celia, I was heartbroken. We both became Directors of a large Company, Philip was made Managing Director and so he and Celia were often abroad, that was when Andy became my responsibility. I love him as if he were my own son. Peter and I are trustees of Philip and Celia's estates and that is what I want to talk to you about tomorrow."
Eric joined them sitting on the grass at their feet.
"Are you coming to Wellington with Bob?" Paul asked him.
"I'd like to, I thought we could find some digs together close to varsity."
"So you are also going to varsity?"
"Well I guess so, though I am not as keen as Bob, he's a swot, I'm not. I'd rather play rugby."
Paul laughed. "Getting a degree is hard work. Andy expects Bob to stay with him and naturally, you as well if you want to be with Bob. He's got plenty of room, ideal for studying and to get away from each other when you need to." He grinned, "even your lover can be a bit much at times." Bob blushed.
"Dinners being served," called Peter from the dining room's outer door. The roast beef with Yorkshire pudding followed by sherry trifle and fruit salad was served with claret wine. The boy's appetites did justice to a delicious meal. Their glasses were kept filled so that they became increasingly relaxed and uninhibited. Eric became quite amorous towards Bob and insisted on feeding him his sweet. At first Bob was amused and then became irritated and tried to stop Eric but without success. He excused himself and went to the toilet and Eric rose to follow him but fell under the table. As Mark lifted him onto the settee, Eric put his arms around his neck and in a loud voice said, "will my teddy bear sleep with me tonight?"
"Those days are over Eric," Mark looked at Andy, "that was a long time ago."
Andy laughed, "so you were Eric's teddy bear. Poor Bob, he's not so woolly. Of course we could wrap him in a sheepskin."
Peter appeared with a large sheepskin rug just as Bob returned. He looked concerned when he saw Eric asleep on the settee.
"He's had too much wine, he wants his teddy bear and we thought you might oblige tonight wrapped in this." Peter gave the rug to Bob.
"He'd prefer Mark as you're not hairy enough," Andy said
Bob wrapped the rug around himself. "Sorry Eric, no way could I sleep in this," he returned the rug to Peter. "It will have to be Mark.
Mark looked stunned. "It'll be like old times," Andy said. "Don't you have the hots for Eric any more? Not even a little?"
"I don't mind sleeping with Andy," Bob said much to Andy's delight and Mark's surprise. "Don't worry, he's too drunk to be much fun." 'I hope' he thought as he spoke. Peter and Paul were much amused by developments caused by Eric's inebriation. While the others cleared the table and loaded the dishwasher, Bob and Peter went into the lounge.
"How do you feel about having a half brother?" Peter asked Bob.
"I found it very hard to believe at first, it is not easy accepting a stranger as your brother, however as I get to know Andy I am liking him a lot. He's a nice guy. It sure is strange that we are both gay."
"A blessing, in fact a godsend, it is going to make life a lot easier for you both. Most of Andy's friends are gay and his interests involve him with many more. The big problem is he's very wealthy, been indulged by his parents but had few friends his own age . He needs close friends who will restrain his extravagance. I hope you will help Mark there."
"He and Mark seem to live only for music."
"That's right but they are both great artists who are going places. Mark is a concert pianist and Andy a wonderful tenor. Both this year and last they performed many times. Their home is never without music, I hope you can adjust to it."
The others came in carrying mugs of coffee. "Steven and his partner Tony are spending tomorrow with us, " Andy said.
"Did you say the Minister was Steven Evans?" Peter asked. Andy confirmed that it was. "I know him, I'll tell you more about him later."
"Well join us for lunch to morrow, you can renew your acquaintance."
They left soon after 9 with Bob and Mark supporting Eric who was still half asleep. They undressed him then took him to the toilet. Bob focused his cock while Mark supported him with encouraging "piddle darling, wee wee for daddy." Eventually his golden stream began taking a long time to empty his bladder. He had a silly grin on his face as they tried to keep him awake until he'd finished. As they put him into bed, Mark said to Bob, "am I sleeping with him tonight?"
"Do you really want to, you know you don't have to."
Mark looked nervously at Bob, "I really would like to. We were once very close, there is still a spark or two. Would you mind?"
"No, if it's alright by Andy."
"Oh it's Ok with Andy, he's really keen to sleep with his brother." Mark grinned.
Andy was already in bed with his eyes closed. Bob stripped and climbed in beside him, not saying a word. Andy grunted contentedly, turned and cuddled Bob, then felt his smooth chest.
"Bloody hell," he said as he opened his eyes. Then he saw Bob. "It's not a dream, this is wonderful."
"Mark knows and approves, he says it will help our bonding."
Andy snuggled into him, kissed his chest and stroked his stomach. Bob held him close.
"I'm glad this has happened," Bob said. "I hoped you and I could be more intimate, sleeping with you tells me that you agree."
"I think you are very sexy and I'm hoping Mark thinks so too. Although I love Mark, I wouldn't mind if he also wanted to sleep with you. Would Eric mind?"
"We'll find out in the morning." Bob wasn't very sure how Eric would react.
Andy kissed him lightly on the chest stomach and neck, his tongue delved into the well of his navel. Bob became increasingly excited, his cock stiffened and jerked. Andy grasped it and began to pump. Precum oozed from the foreskin which he slowly drew back to display the purple head. He moved down the bed so that his tongue could wipe the tip Bob caught his breath as strong sensations surged through him. Andy's mouth engulfed his cock and with slow strong strokes he massaged it's length. Bob's fingers combed his hair. He closed his eyes and succumbed to the intense sensations generated by Andy's skilful servicing. He tensed as he felt his climax growing, then gasped as he ejaculated, his cum filling Andy's mouth. A long contented sigh signalled the dieing orgasm. Andy kissed him, his cum covered tongue finding Bob's, each seeking to embrace the other. Bob wrapped his arms and legs about Andy, clasping him tightly, their cocks pressed together. Bob came again followed by Andy, their cream spreading between their pressing stomachs. They fell asleep in each other's arms.
Eric was overjoyed to find Mark sleeping beside him. He stroked his chest hair before hugging him. No holds barred energetic sex followed, a replay of the great sex they previously enjoyed. Mark fucked Eric with the same enthusiasm of those earlier years.
"That was great, you are still the best," Mark said.
"Could I take Andy's place?" Eric teased him.
"Never, he's the guy I love. Surely Bob's the guy you love?"
"Perhaps." Mark wondered how long this meant Bob would be his partner.
Mark went into the other bedroom and climbed in beside Andy. "Mornin' darling, " he said before kissing him "mm Bob tastes very nice." Bob hid his face in Andy's armpit.
"He's delicious, maybe he'll let you have a taste."
Bob sat up. "Is Eric awake, did he miss me?"
"Not that I noticed." Mark was unconcerned. Bob noticed Andy's questioning look and went in to Eric.
"Well was it like old times?" Bob asked as he got in beside him.
"Not really, I love Mark's hairy body, but sex with you is more meaningful. You don't need to worry."
"Nor you, Andy gives great sex but I still prefer you." Bob held Eric close and soon they were in a passionate embrace which greatly excited Eric. Bob turned onto his stomach as Eric put on a condom and lubricated his rigid cock Bob raised his bottom encouraging entry then tightened his sphincter muscle about Eric's throbbing cock. Eric moaned as Bob took control pushing his buttocks into Eric's crotch. Eric's cock became a rapidly pumping piston. Sweat dripped from Eric's face and torso onto Bob. He too was perspiring as his body twisted and heaved. He masturbated frantically as Eric drove his rod to it's limit and then roared as he climaxed, shuddering with each ejaculation then collapsing onto Bob just as he came. Cum mixed with sweat spread between their bodies. Bob's lingering kiss conveyed the strong love he felt for Eric. He wondered why Eric seemed to be less responsive.
Bob's thoughts kept returning to his night with Andy, to the warmth of his affection as they cuddled each other, to his desire to please and his concern that Bob would be able to accept him as his brother. They were at breakfast when Andy said,
"Mark and I would like you both to meet our friends during your stay so hope you have no objections to a dinner party."
You are bound to see a lot of them for they frequently visit," Mark continued. There's Jeremy Weston the composer, Malcolm McPherson who orchestrates Jerry's compositions, Aaron, Jerry's partner and other singers."
"Do any play rugby?" Eric asked.
"I doubt it," Mark said. "Andy do we know any gay rugby players?" Andy shook his head and then had a thought.
"Let's find an attractive rugby player. There is a gay football player, shall we watch their match on Saturday, now where's the express?"
He scattered the magazines on a coffee table until he found a copy of the gay newspaper and searched the list of clubs.. "Here it is. The Knights Football Club." He dialled the contact number and was told the next game was on Saturday morning at the Karori park. "This could be fun, I doubt there will be many supporters, shall we go Eric?"
Eric was amused. "Bob and I might need to be reserves, ha, ha."
"Well what about the dinner party, is it on?" Mark asked.
"I would appreciate it," Bob said, "I've got to be accepted as Andy's brother and it would help if Peter and Paul are also there to confirm it." Andy agreed so Bob offered to check on a convenient date with Paul that morning.
Bob arrived just on 10 and Paul took him into the lounge. He could smell fresh baking and noticed Peter in an apron kneading dough in the kitchen. Paul sat in an easy chair to the side of Bob with a file on a small table beside him.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked.
"Most of the night. I slept with Andy and he wanted to talk, and cuddle of course."
"Of course. I doubt that you would have slept much, his cock is so demanding." Paul grinned. "First I want to give you something." Paul handed Bob a brown envelope and watched him withdraw a photograph. He looked at it for some time before asking Paul,
"Where did you get this?"
"Philip sent it to me with a letter. It was taken about 20 years ago in a restaurant in Feilding. In the letter he told me that he was in love with your mother but could not leave his wife Celia and Andy."
Bob looked at the pretty young woman he knew was his mother. Her fingers were entwined with those of the man as their hands rested on the table. The man was the same a that in the photo Andy had shown him of his family. It was his father who was looking adoringly at Bob's mother.
"Keep the photo, it is a copy of the one Philip sent to me."
Bob examined his father's face, wondering what he was like. "I would like you tell me more about my father, I want to get to know him."
"He was a fine man. You know that I loved him and I love his son Andy. I would like to feel the same about you." Paul was emotional and tears filled his eyes.. "Because his parents were away so often, Andy grew up with me. I wont have that pleasure with you but I hope we will still be close friends."
Bob left his chair to hug Paul and kiss him. "We will be close friends, I'm privileged to share you with Andy. Thank you for the photograph, I'll treasure it. Now I know my mother loved my real father." Bob's tears of joy and strong emotion stifled further words. He sat wiping his eyes as Paul placed the file on his knees.
"As you know Peter and I are trustees of both the estates of your father and Andy's mother. We have discussed your possible entitlements with Andy and it is his wish, and we have agreed, that you benefit from your father's estate. His estate includes properties, an apartment in London and Andy's home, and investments valued at 8 million. Income from those investments meet all of Andy's expenses and will now also meet yours. We all have agreed that you be given half, that is investments to the value of 4 million and that you share the properties. The year after next, Mark and Andy will be living in London and will be using the apartment so you will have the Karori property to yourself. The cost of the housekeeper, gardener and maintenance are met from income, as will be your expenses, varsity fees and allowance. Andy has additional income from his mother's estate and from royalties on his CDs, recital fees and performance contracts, so he can afford to be generous."
Paul was checking a list of items in his notes while Bob sat stunned by Paul's announcement. Bob found it hard to believe he could be so wealthy.
"Are you sure I am entitled to this inheritance, it's incredibly generous?"
"Absolutely, we know for certain that Philip is your father and you are entitled to your share of his estate. Remember Andy fully agrees. The trustees are required under his will, to take responsibility for the administration of the estate until you are both 25 when it is yours to do what you like with it." Paul grinned, "I'm sure you are likely to be more frugal than Andy who can be extravagant."
Bob was at a loss what to say. "It is going to be difficult for me to accept that I will never have financial problems, that my choice of a career will not need to worry about the cost. Oh boy, it's unbelievable."
"Watch it, there will be plenty of scroungers and fair weather friends once it becomes known you are wealthy. Be careful with your generosity."
"Who looks after the investment portfolios?"
"I do as I am already involved with the stock-market and as I am a director of a number of companies. You will find the returns have been consistently good." Bob felt relieved to hear of Paul's interest for he was so different from Andy who couldn't care less. "I regularly discuss the estate affairs with Andy and now that will include you. I think you are likely to have a much better grip of the financial concerns."
Peter appeared with coffee and hot buttered scones. They were delicious and Bob's mouth and chin were soon shiny from the oozing butter. "Ever tried warm butter as a lubricant?" Peter asked solemnly. "It's quite good but makes a hell of a mess of the bed." Bob had difficulty eating as he laughed.
"I'll try it on the back lawn," he replied.
"Naked of course," Peter added, "but grass clippings are likely to stick, such a nuisance." He flapped his hands, raised his eyebrows before offering Bob another scone.
"Oh I nearly forgot," Bob changed the subject. "Andy and Mark are holding a dinner party to introduce Mark and me to their friends. They want you both to come so want a convenient date."
"Here we go again, Andy loves dinner parties," Peter said. "He has wonderful caterers, so butch, so sexy, and the food is great too. How about it Paul?"
"Next Sunday would suit us."
"Then next Sunday it is," Bob replied.
The morning flew as they questioned Bob about his life and interests. They were sensitive to his bereavements and avoided mentioning the deaths of his parents. Bob asked them a lot about Andy's life and his involvement with Mark. He was surprised to hear that they were both so highly regarded, frequently giving recitals and with Andy taking operatic roles.
"I hope you and Eric continue to play rugby, Andy and Mark need to realise that there is more to enjoy beside music." Paul said.
Bob told them they were attending a game being played by the Knights. Peter roared with laughter. "That team has the beefiest looking guys I've ever seen. If you like hairy muscular men you are going to have a treat."
"The problem is Mark and Andy haven't a clue about rugby."
"There's more than the game to enjoy," Paul replied with a knowing wink.
To be continued.
