Gregg Hammer Part One
"Good morning Gregg. The time is now 6:30, Tuesday the 4 of July 3010. You have a meeting with the chairman at 8:00 am. There are no more entries...Hope you enjoy the day."
I opened my eyes at this last message. 'So do I' I thought with a sigh. I had a sinking suspicion that I was going to get fired. It wasn't that that worried me though. I'd already been hired and fired five times this year on account of my attitude, or so they said. What worried me more was the fact that I was being called in to see the Chairman. It was a rare occasion that any one saw the Chairman. In this day and age, the chairmen of the five companies that controlled the human race were the most powerful beings in the universe, next to the various Generals of the human armed forces. What could he want with me?
I pondered this thought until my computer reminded me to get up. "Get up so that stupid thing shuts up." Came a mumbled voice at my side. Shifting over onto my side I looked at the gorgeous fourteen-year old boy burrowed in his pillow. I reached out a hand and started to trace the hairline of his short black hair, and then down onto the tip of his small cute nose. I could stare for hours into that face, watching how his smooth pale skin flowed.
Using the hour or so I had before the meeting, I showered, got dressed, grabbed my computer/notebook and caught a train to the office, Allegiance inc. On the trip there I couldn't stop thinking of possible reasons for the chairman wanting to see me. I even caught myself sweating at some of the reasons that popped up. A kid, probably on the way to school, gave me a side ways look, as If to say 'weirdo'. Great start to the day.
Anyway, when I got to the office I looked up at the big clock that hung over the entrance hall of the building. 7:40. Damn. Too little time to do anything of use before the meeting, and too much time to waist sitting in the waiting room.
I lifted my hands to the heavens, not that I really believed in a god, and asked why of all the possible things my day had to start like this. "It can't be all that bad." A voice said to my left. I dropped my hands and turned to face my contradicter. I could only smile when I saw him. A boy of about 15, sitting on the side passage steps. He had longish blond hair that was hanging in front of his eyes. The tight white shirt he wore showed me a well-muscled upper body. He also wore baggie blue pants with green stripes all over with designer thick soled shoes. Typical clothes of the younger generation.
Now at the age of 22 I had figured out a while back that I was bi. But my age limit on the male side was about 17/18 years of age. Nothing over. I suppose this made me a bit of a boylover, but hey I could live with it. "I suppose you're right." I said. Looking up at the clock it told me I had 19 minutes left. Get to the Chairman's office 5 minutes early and 5 minutes to get to my office, pick up some things and get to the Chairman. That left me with about 9 minutes to talk to the boy.
Turning to him I smiled the friendliest smile I could muster and said, "Hi, I'm Gregg. Please say you'll help me waist a couple of minutes?" He brushed the hair out of his eyes (Grey) and smiled as he looked at me.
"Sure mister Hammer, my name's Tommy" I hesitated,
"How'd you now my know name Tommy?" His smile broadened into a grin as he said,
"I've seen your picture once or twice."
"Right." I replied. "So what you doing here?"
"Nothing much, just sitting here waiting for my dad to call me."
"Does he work here?"...
It carried on like this for a few more minutes, from which I learned he was on holiday. Liked sport a lot, and had even played rugby for his planet, which is no small feat. He liked a lot of Dance music. Went to the gym once a day. I was nodding my head with interest when I glanced the time on the big old clock. 7:53! "That's really cool Tommy, but I afraid I have to rush off now. Nice meeting you" I said as we shook hands while I stood.
"Ok, so I'll see you later."
"Only if I make it out alive." I said sighing. Tightened his grip on our clasped hands he pulled himself to a standing position. 'Not a bad' I thought and then said bye.
I rushed down to my office to collect some progress reports, which might just save my butt. It seemed that the decision had already been made though. As I walked to my cubicle, I noticed the heads of my fellow workers pop up, recognize me, and pop down again. No hellos or Morning Gregg's anywhere.
I chuckled a bit at this as I downloaded the info that I needed into my notebook, wondering all the while what excuse would be used this time to get rid of me.
"Err... Excuse me sir."
"Yes Evens?" I said to one of the few people who worked under me.
"Umm, I... that is we were wondering... Is it true about what they say?" I knew what he was referring to.
You see, in last couple of decade's medicine, with the help of the military, had got to the stage where it was able to 'improve the human body' as they said at the beginning of it all. Not changing the human form or adding an extra eye or anything like that. They figured out a way to combine man with machine. Cyborgs were their common name. But then as humanity as proved to us time and again over the centuries, it won't accept that which is different or not understood. Their only real safe place nowadays was a post in the army.
I was getting tired of questions like this now, and I only had five minutes left. So to answer his question I took the metal coffee cup from his hand and crushed it in mine, spilling hot coffee over my hand and the floor.
I arrived at the Chairman's waiting room just as the secretary came to call me in. He led me through what seemed to be a inner waiting room, probably for important guests, and then through a big set of double doors. Inside a large wooden desk dominated the room with a few couches scattered around the walls. It was on one of these couches that I was surprised to see Tommy. I gave him a quick grin, which he returned, before approaching the desk at which the Chairman sat behind. 'So Tommy's the Chairman's son. At lest I made a good impression there." I thought.
"Ahh, mister Hammer. Good to see you."
"Good to see you to sir." I said somewhat nervously.
"Sit sit, I've just been reading your file here..."
"Sir," I interrupted. "If you just have a look at my progress reports I have here you'll see..."
"Mister Hammer," He cut in quite sharply. "I've read your progress reports, and you've been doing quite a good job. You should be commended."
"But you're still going to fire me." I said somewhat sarcastically. " On the contrary mister Hammer, I'm going to give you a raise." I smiled at this.
"A raise?"
"Yes, I've been reading your file here. You where in the army. What department?" I thought for just a second, he probably already knew, but I wasn't supposed to talk about this sort of thing.
"You could say I was in search and rescue." The Chairman nodded his head, apparently happy with my answer.
"And you played rugby for them?" This caught me off guard.
"Yes... I captained the first side for a year before I received a injury in the line of duty."
"And that's when they put in your... um... 'implants'. Why did you leave the army?"
"I took the blame for someone else's mistake, and was demoted. I decided I couldn't work for them after that so I was honorably discharged."
"Ok, well I know about the rest of your life up until now. Now about that raise, it's got one condition." 'There's always a condition' I thought.
"And that will be?"
"That you quit your job here..."
"Hu?"
"And take up a coaching position, coaching my son's rugby team for an upcoming tournament."
I still couldn't believe the sudden change my life had taken. From an IT manager to a rugby coach of a group of twelve year olds. Yip, Tommy was only twelve, and he captained a rugby side made up of the sons of company personal. I laughed out loud as I almost skipped with joy down the entrance hall of my former work place. I don't know which made me happier; being able to quit a job I hated and take up one which I knew would be exciting, or the look on my bosses face when I told him exactly what he could do with his reports.
I'd spent most of the rest of the day clearing out my desk and finishing up one or two things that couldn't just be left hanging, and now walked down the entrance hall for what I hoped was the last time. It was there that I saw Tommy sitting on the same steps on which we had met. "My dad said it was ok if I went with you to your place while you picked up a few things." Another part of the deal with my new job had been that I was required to leave planet that night. A training camp had been set up for us on one of the company's resorts.
"I'm happy with that if you are." I said as I gave him a hand up.
"Cool, where do you live?"
"Not far from here." I rested my hand on the back of his neck and guided him towards the door. The touch of his skin felt cool against my hand, yet at the same time I felt a rush of heat. He didn't seem to mind, and looked up at me with his intense gray eyes and smiled. 'Yip' I thought. Coaching rugby was going to be fun.
"What's the matter with your hand" I looked up to Tommy who was sitting beside me in the train. The train wasn't that crowded, but Tommy had made a point of sitting up close to me. One thing I had started to notice about the kid was that he didn't take his eyes off of me. From when we met on the steps, to the meeting with his dad and now in the train. I know that sounds a bit like I'm blowing my own horn, but he'd been doing it for so long I had started to constantly check my appearance.
"So? What happened to your hand?" He startled me out of my thought process.
"Nothing really, just had a fight with a coffee cup." In my typical manner of not thinking before I acted, I had forgotten that metal objects could bend into very sharp edges. The result being a minor cut on my palm that refused to stop bleeding.
"I think I can make it stop." Tommy said as he came a little closer to me, if that was possible. I gave my hand over into his care and he took it with the gentle hands of the twelve-year-old boy that he was. He was a big lad for twelve years, my first impression of him had put his age closer to fifteen. I wondered at this as he took the corner of his shirt, soaked it in his mouth for a second and then applied it to the cut.
"Does it hurt?" He said as he applied quite a bit of pressure to the makeshift bandage. It actually hurt like hell, but I wasn't about to make him feel as if he as doing something wrong, it would stop the bleeding after all.
"Just a dull throb, thanks." He grinned at went back to his task, lifting the bandage every now and then to check if the bleeding had stopped. I looked at him and wondered if the whole team was like him. If it was I was probably going to have fun.
The Allegiance U\12 rugby side, a team that apparently was doing very well for they had been invited to play in the inter-planetary clubs competition to be held in three months time. That was where I came in. The team had only just made the required level of however they rated the teams, and Chuck Greenstone, Chairman and CEO of Allegiance inc. had decided that the team needed a coach with more professional experience. So here we were, off to my apartment to pick up a few things and then to the Greenstone house so Tommy could pack, and to wait a couple of hours until it was time to leave for the training camp. The squad of about twenty twelve-year-olds was to meet at the company resort where they... we would be spending the next three months training for the competition. I couldn't wait.
We arrived at my apartment and I told Tommy to make himself at home while I grabbed some clothes, toiletries and a few personal things. Once packed, I found Tommy had grabbed a coke and was now looking at my army stuff. I had sort of dedicated one of the walls in the living room to my career in the arm; medals, photos, badges, that sort of thing.
"This is so cool. Is this you?" He said pointing to one of the pictures. I came closer and stood behind him to see. It was an oldish one of a buddy and me when we joined.
"Yip, that's me."
"You look different." He said with a frown.
"Well I don't have a shaved head anymore." He leaned back, placing the back of his head against my chest to look at me. I don't know if it was just me, I admit he was really turning me on, but these little signs of affection seemed to be piling up. His eyes never leaving me, letting my hand rest on his neck until it got too awkward, sitting practically on top of me, nursing my hand and now this.
"... Maybe..." He said, and then, "Are you going to take any of this stuff?"
"Just this." I leaned over him and picked up a shiny silver medal. It was shaped like a star encircling a blue diamond. Resting my shoulders on his and my head next to his I held the medal in front of us. 'Medal for bravery beyond the call of duty' was the inscription.
"Cool, what you get that for?" I smiled and pointed to my friend in the picture.
"For saving that one's ass. Hmmm, don't go telling your parents that I said that."
"Don't worry," Tommy said lifting his head from my chest and moving to pick up my bag. "My parents think I'm a good little boy who doesn't know about things like that." 'Things like what?' I wondered.
"Well don't break their hearts, cause it'll be my head on the firing line." He laughed as he ran out the door, calling for me to hurry up.
We caught a train and then a taxi to Tommy's house, or mansion should I say. I remarked on this as we walked up to the front door. "Its ok." Was all I got. I had also noticed during our few hours together that Tommy was prone to these sort of mood swings. All happy and full of energy one moment and then brooding the next. It would be interesting to see how he acted as the team captain.
A butler greeted us as we entered the house. I had enough control over myself to not gape at the extravagance of it all.
"I'll take your bag to your room sir."
"That's all right, we'll only be here for a few hours."
"I'm sorry sir, I assumed that you would like to take a shower before you and the young master left?"
"Yea." Tommy said laughing. "I don't want to travel with a stinker on the shuttle to the resort."
"Well I guess I had better then. Thanks ...?"
"Jefrey sir."
"Come on Gregg, come see my room." He raced up the flight of stares, and I quickly followed, worried that I might get lost in this place. I was somewhat surprised to see his room. Seeing the rest of the house I had expected his room to be the same sort of thing; expensive gadgets and music discs etc. But it was like any others, posters of sport heroes, desk with computer and sound system, plain double bed.
"Do you like my posters?" He said diving onto his bed
"Yea, they're pretty cool." I said trying to figure out what connected all the rugby players on the wall. "I've played against most of these guy's you know" That got a response. 'Captains!' It suddenly struck. The posters where of captains of the various professional rugby sides.
"Really?"
"Yip, they're not actually that tough." I said somewhat off hand.
"Ahhh!" He through a pillow at me. "Somebody thinks he's hard."
"Is it hey?" Pretending annoyance I jumped after him onto the bed and started to tickle him. He started thrashing and laughing as boys do when being tickled and cant do anything about it.
"Stop! Please!" I stopped for a second. "But why, you're enjoying it man, you're smiling and laughing." I gave him a quick tickle to demonstrate. "See." " No please! If you don't I wont show you my new poster." I relented. Grinning up at me he had that look in his eye that said 'You'll like this'.
"Check it out, I ordered it last night." He said leaning over the edge of his bed. He pulled out the poster and gave it to me. Sitting up straight I slowly unraveled it.
I sat there staring at myself for a while. It was a picture of me staring across the rugby field, with a bit of mud and sweat on the side of my face.
"Do you like it?" Came a tentative voice from behind me.
"How'd you find it, I didn't know they still made these things."
"It took me a while," He said coming to look at it over my shoulder, resting his arms on my shoulders. I closed my eyes for a sec as I felt the length of his body come up against mine.
"Where you going to hang it?" I said looking around the room, there was hardly any space left on the walls.
"You choose."
"Ok." I looked around a bit, "How about up there." I got up, disappointed that I would have to break contact, and stood on the bed so I could reach the roof. He passed me some presstick so I could stick it right above his bed. Lying back down I said. "There, now when you go to bed at night you'll always see a good looking fella."
"mmmmmm" ...I hesitated, put off guard by the response. I suppose I had been hoping for something like that, but now I was unsure of what to do. I'd only ever once had something with a guy, and that had been in high school. Not to mention the age difference, I was a bit out of my league.
"I think I'm going to take that shower that Jefrey mentioned."
"Cool," He said getting up. "I'll get some food for us."
That's the end of part one. Part two is coming real soon. It's got this real cool scene when Gregg gets out the shower. Anyway any productive comments can be sent to:
