Chapter 20
"So this is the life stream?" Kyle asks, as he feels a strange sensation filling his body. It is if he is floating in an ocean of darkness, but this is not scary, it is comforting. Floating with him are other things, planets, suns and stars. It is if there is a connection between him and everything.
"Yes. It flows through the galaxy. the stars, the planets, the suns. Even your moon." Jason replies. Kyle is finally getting used to talking to Jason as the all knowing force wielding Jedi knight thing he was. IT was.
"And this is the source of my power?" Kyle asks. It's an incredible feeling, a sense of oneness and yet he can still feel himself.
"Yes. The life stream flows through the galaxy. The thing that comes is...something else. it feeds and corrupts it..." Kyle cand feel something gnawing at the edge of his awareness. Was that the dark thing?
"So that thing.." Kyle asks, "is that the darkness?" Kyle doesn't like it, and he's glad its far away.
"Yes. Already the galaxy is fighting. But they need help." Kyle can sense a war front, stretching for what seems like infinity across the black ocean of stars. A black wars with light, but this is different than the peaceful quietness of space.
Kyle sighs. More answers lead to more questions. If he is supposed to help.. and this is such a big thing.. where are the others? why didn't the other planets send help?
Jason must sense the question, because he answers. "The other planets.. have sent their own ... avatars eons ago."
"So now it's my turn I guess." Kyle replies. He's not sure what to make of everything, but knows he has to help. Still, the scope of what is happening... its so big. this is bigger than the earth, bigger than him. The galaxy is at war with darkness, a darkness that will consume everything in it's path.
Jason sat looking out the hospital window. it was snowing, the flakes swirling across the parking lot. The weather didn't quiet match his mood; he preferred dark gray rain clouds when he felt like this. \tab
The young teen sighed, watching his breath frost the window over. Why? so many questions in his head. why hadn't he told him? why hadn't he explained? why did he have super powers?
And not to mention on top of that he couldn't tell how he felt. proud, hurt, angry, mistrusted... all of them were in his head.
"Jason?" Kyle's mom said. She was back from getting a sandwich at the cafeteria. "I got you a sandwich. you must be hungry." She offered him the sandwich as he turned to . Jason was surprised at first, then began to cry, his emotions overtaking him again.
With out a word she sat down next to jason, then hugged him, pulling the smaller boy into her. Jason tensed up, not sure why she was hugging him. She pulled him tighter in response, and he finally gave in. Relief poured through his body as he cried.
"It will be ok. Kyle will be fine." Fine? her son had super powers, and passed out for a wierd reason, and she was saying that?
"but how could he just pass out like that?" Jason sobbed. how? that was the biggest question on his mind. he'd passed out twice just randomly. fear and worry sat in his chest. What could cause a super powered person to just pass out?
"The doctors will find out soon." she comforted him. But the doctors couldn't find out, they'd tell everyone if Kyle erupted again. Didn't she know that?
"But what if the doctor's find out.." he trailed off, sniffing. Why did he have to cry so much?
"That's what we want." She replied gently, but Jason could tell she was now somewhat confused. Wasn't she thinking of the super power thing at all? or maybe she didn't know...But most all super hero's told there family, didn't they? Well not really. not that he could think of. Better safe to assume that Kyle hadn't told her anything.
"What if it's something bad?" Jason finally asked. What if it WAS something bad? Bad enough to knock a super hero out? Jason wasn't sure if he wanted to know.
"Then we will deal with it." She said with simple determination.
Kyle watches a fleet of warships crossing the vast darkness of space. But they look so small against the terror before them. Kyle wants to warn them, wants to stop them, but he can't. And he knows they are there, fighting for the small planet behind them.
Dark monstrousities hover before them, silohetted against the starry background. The stars and numerous galaxies are the only real reason he can see what these things are. and they are huge, ugly and vicious. They look like something out of a dark horror novel, only part sci-fi. Some are crap like, with warped appendages and claws, while others look as if they are mixed with some sort of black fire, streaming black flames off their bodies.
What sort of insanity is this? Kyle thinks to himself. The fleet is large, but the amount of dark creatures seems bigger. Kyle can't quite tell, as they fade into teh blackness of space.
Kyle watches the battle begins, the ships launching volleys of missiles and energy blasts, while the creatures swarm and cut, rake and crush. The view is now covered in flashes of light as the battle continues.
Kyle feels a wave of dread as he realizes that the fleet of ships is slowly losing, becuase more creatures keep coming from the darkness of space. They are swarming, like violent bees that won't die. He watches in removed horror as the last remaining command ship flies as deep as it can into the swirling mass of evil, and detonates its self. Kyle feels a mix of sadness and joy as he watches light fill his vision. They won. at the cost of the entire fleet, yes, but they stopped it.
Then horror replaces joy as he realizes that the dark creatures are still there. Yes, alot of them had been destroyed, but more remained. Kyle wants to help, wants to cry, wants to do something.
Steven sat in the room feeling out of place. it was the weekend, and Kyle still wasn't awake. everyone had gone back to the cafeteria, and he was here, keeping an eye on things. Rick had almost dragged Jason to go eat with them, leaving Steven behind.
Steven wished he knew what to think. Kyle, his friend kyle.. they'd been friends for years, and now this. he wouldnt[ ahve said anything eitehr.. so he wasn't angry about that.. he just wished he knew what was going on. it still shocked him. Kyle was a super powered teen.
So many thoughts. Steven didn't like thinking, didn't like having to deal with complicated matters. he liked things simple. and the beeping of the machines attached to Kyle weren't helping. They' hooked up two bags of some nutrient solution, one to each arm. Apparently he was very low on nutritients or something.
The pale boy sighed. It was hard to think of Kyle being a world famous super hero. Kyle. a super hero. he just couldn't quite match his friend with the boy on the news. He was just 15 for freakin sakes. How was he supposed to deal with this?
And keeping it a secret? good luck. he'd almost dropped it 3 times since the day Kyle collapsed. Steven wished Josh had been there. Not that Josh said much. But for some reason Steven felt better when Josh was around. But Josh had some family shit to go to.
Why? why did Kyle have super powers? he was going to tell them, then he passed out. Again. Even Jason didn't know. Steven thought Kyle told Jason everything, what with them being boyfriends.
At least it was something to add interest to an other wise boring life. Ever since Kyle had become a super hero they'd had stuff to talk about. But why couldn't anything happen to Steven? why was he stuck with the boring life? The only thing remotely interesting that had ever happened to him was he broke his arm. and that hurt alot. Was that why he was so confused over Kyle? cuz he was jealous?
Maybe that was it. Kyle could fly, do super things, shoot energy beams. It would be cool to do that. But that didn't seem like all of it. why couldn't he sort out his feelings?
Then suddenly he heard moaning. Moaning? STeven looked over at the bed. There was Kyle, his eyes open, his voice trying to speak. Water!! Kyle needed water. STeven looked around. a cup! He grabbed the cup from the stand, and filled it with water from the bathroom sink.
"here." he said, helping Kyle drink. Kyle was awake!! Now Steven could get some answers.
"Thanks. What happened?" he asked, his voice sounding better. a little hoarse, but still better.
"you like um.. powered up I guess. then you feinted again." Steven replied awkwardly. Kyle sat nursing his water thoughtfully.
"Oh shit. What about the nurse?" he asked suddenly. oh yeah. Steven wasn't sure.
"I think alex took care of that." Steven replied. He really wasn't sure what she'd said, but obviously the nurse hadn't said anything as nothing big had happened, and there wasn't any news people swarming around trying to ask about Kyle. "so what happened? I mean... with, well, you know." Steven asked finally. Sheesh. how do you just ask something like so why do you have super powers, and why are you collapsing all over the place?
"Yeah. No offense, but I'd rather just answer that once. So where is everyone else?" Kyle asked.
"they went to the cafeteria." Steven said lamely. At least it sounded lame to him. Why couldn't he talk better?
"Oh. So do you konw what the doctors think about me passing out?" oh oh. That had been pretty ugly the first day or two.
"They think you're undernourished." Steven said. Kyle nodded, as if he had already knew about that.
"Yeah. I was thinking about it. It could be why I'm always hungry." It was true. Kyle did seem to eat more lately. The two boys sat in awkward silence, Kyle looking thoughtful while Steven just felt dumb.
"Could you like go and get the others? oh, and did anybody tell my mom.. or do I have to?" Kyle asked.
"No. Jason was pretty sure you didn't tell her. so we didn't say anything." Steven answered, happy he knew that. Why couldn't he be smarter like Kyle and Jason? he always forgot things, he never seemed to know anything. It made him sad.
"Thanks." Kyle said. "It really means alot that you didn't say anything." Kyle said.
"Yeah." Steven shrugged. Silence filled the room as he sat there, wondering what he should say. But they were both saved from awkwardness as a nurse came in.
"Mr. Raven!!" your awake!" the young nurse squealed. She was new. "You must be really hungry!" she exclaimed. Kyle nodded weakly. "I know how boys are, I'll get you a menu to pick your meal for tommorrow. how does chicken pot pie sound for dinner?" She asked.
"I'll go tell the others your awake." Steven said.
