High School Daze Chapter 5:

It's been three weeks since the accident, and I haven't seen anything but the inside of this hospital room, I haven't left for anything, luckily they have a shower in here, and I don't stink, but that is of course the least of my concerns at the moment. All I do is stare at him lying in that bed comotose. He hasn't moved a muscle in three weeks, and the doctors can't really figure out why, they just tell me that he is going to be okay, and he is breathing on his own now, and I just need to give him time to wake up. I guess all I have is time. I haven't been to school in three weeks, and I was told that I am in danger of not graduating, but I really don't care about that right now. I look at him hoping for some signs of life, but the only thing i see constantly is his chest moving up and down as he breathes.

I guess I need to catch you up on the last three weeks. It all started when I got the phone call from Steven's sister. I woke my mom up, and me and her rushed to the hospital. When we got to the hospital we went straight to the emergency room to find out what had happened. Luckily Steven's sister was waiting outside the waiting area and she was able to stop me and warn me what to expect when I went in.

"You must be Steven" She said noticing the paniced look on my face.

"Yeah, how is he? Is he okay? Can I see him?" I asked a little out of breath, I felt my mom's arm wrap around my shoulder to comfort me, but I was in a world all to myself.

"We don't know anything yet, all we know is what happened." She said still a little shaken up by the whole experience. "Steven came to the house, got some of his things packed and I guess was going to leave and come to your house. Before he could get out of the house, there was some yelling and screaming from him and my father. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I could tell it was not good. Apparently at some point Steven went for the door, and my father grabbed his arm, and Steven pushed him into the wall hard enough for him to fall on a table and break it. Steven then rushed out of the house and got into his car and sped away. About halfway down the street he ran a stop sign, swerved to miss an oncoming car, and hit the curb. His car flipped and rolled about 7 times, he was trapped unconsious upside down until the ambulance got there. Luckily he was wearing his seatbelt, and eveyone who has been to talk to us seems optimistic. They are in surgery now draining some fluid off of his brain, but they tell us that his other injuries are just bumps and bruises." She said starting to tear up getting the story out. I was in tears resting my head on my moms shoulder as she lovingly rubbed my arm.

"Our parents are in the waiting room, and they said they didn't want to see you anywhere near this hospital, but I knew that the only person Steven would really want here was you, so that is why I called you, I don't think he would ever want my father to be the first person that he saw when he woke up, it wasn't pretty at all." She said still tearing a little bit.

"I'm going to go in there, I don't care what they say, and I am not leaving this hospital until I can take Steven home with me." I blurted out feeling a little rebelious.

Just as I had gotten that statement out, I heard the door to the emergency waiting area open up, and Steven's father walked out, and as soon as his eyes met me, you could see the fire start to burn in his entire body.

"What the hell are you doing here. Steven would be at home in his bed if you hadn't completely fucked up his entire life, and his entire future. I don't want you anywhere near my son you little bastard." He said as he made a very aggressive move towards me. Before I could even think, my mom bridge the gap between me and him, and stared a hole directly through him.

"You will not go anywhere near my son do you understand me. Steven wouldn't be in this situation if you had just accepted the fact that he was gay, and not kicked him out of YOUR house. If anybody has a right to be in this hospital it is Jacob, and if you don't like that you son of a bitch you can leave." My mom said standing her ground daring Steven's father to take a step closer.

"Fine!!!!!" he said and turned and made his way out of the exit door, and a couple of minutes later you could hear tires squeeling out in the parking lot as he made a speedy exit.

"Oh God, Mom's gonna freak" Julie said as she was still crying, now even harder from the altercation that me and her father had just had. She made her way into the waiting area. Not even two minutes after she entered the waiting area, I saw Steven's mom run out of the room and out of the hospital obviously distraught. Julie walked out slowly after her mom had left the waiting area. She was still crying, but not as much as she was before. She made her way over to where me and my mom were standing.

"My parents are not coming back. They said that if you were going to be here, then Steven could just have you, and they never want to see him again. I am going to stay here, I don't care what they say, but I hope you are what Steven needs right now. I couldn't stand it if i was to lose him." She leaned back against the wall resting her head on the wall. The last comment moved me to tears, and I went over to Julie and placed my hand on her shoulder and tried my best to comfort her.

"I am not going to leave this hospital until Steven can come home with me." I said and this seemed to cheer her up knowing that even though her parents ran out, that Steven still had people that cared for him more than anything in the world.

Julie finally got her emotions under control well enough to return to the waiting area. I sent my mom out to get us some food, and me and Julie just sat and ate not really saying much in the way of conversation, we were just both lost in our own thought.

About three hours later a doctor finally came into the waiting area and approached me and Julie. He was a middle aged asian, and he approached us with a solemn look on his face. My heart dropped because I was expecting the worst. When he got right up to me and Julie, we both stood up, and I took her hand in mine trying to comfort her and at the same time trying to find someone to comfort me. My mom had left about an hour before, because she had to go to work in a few hours. I held my breath when the doctor started speaking.

"Hey, Im Dr. Choi. I have been in surgery with your brother for the last few hours and we had a couple of complications, but he seems to be pretty stable right now. He is still unconscious, but with the amout of trauma he sustained to the head, that can be expected. We were able to remove all of the fluid from the brain, and there is some swelling, but it should go down in a couple of days and he should wake up then. There is a slight chance that he will be unconscious for a while longer depending on how well his body heals itself. They are rolling him into recovery now, and you should be able to go in one at a time to see him when he gets there. I need to see his parents, do you know where they are?" He asked after telling us Steven's condition

"My parents left, they didn't want to be here anymore. Its a long story, but me and Jacob are here and we can answer any questions that you have." Julie said being strong after hearing her brother was going to be ok

Well after me and Julie, mostly Julie, answered all of Dr. Choi's questions, we were told that someone would come and get us when Steven was ready to recieve visitors. About 20 minutes later a nurse came in and said that one of us could go back, but for only 15 minutes. I let Julie go in first. It was agony as I waited in that waiting room for the 15 minutes Julie was in there, it felt like an eternity. When I didn't think I could take it any longer she finally walked out of the back area. She looked quiet relieved, so that brought a smile to my face.

"How is he?" I asked before she could even get in the room good.

"He looks fine, he has a good color to him. They had to shave off some of his hair, but other than that he just looks like hes sleeping. You can go in now." I couldn't hide the exhalation of breath from the news she had just given me. I left her waiting and went in to see him.

I walked through the big double doors leading into the recovery area. When I got to the right room I paused outside the door to get my head straight. I slowly opened the door and peeked inside to see what I thought was going to be the most horrific sight of my life. When I got into the room, I was relieved to see that what Julie had told me was actually true, he did look like he was sleeping. I walked over to the bed and took a hold to his hand. I gently stroked his hand trying to let him know that I was there for him. I didn't say anything too him, but I just sat there hoping that somehow my sheer presence would spark something in him. It seemed like only seconds had passed when a nurse was walking in and telling me that my time was up. She said they were moving him to a room shortly and that I could see him again then. I bent down and gave him a soft kiss on the forhead and then reluctantly let go of his hand, and walked out of the room.

They moved him into a private room about 2 hours after I left the recovery room. They were not going to let me stay with him, but I put up so much of a fight that they just gave in and brought me a cot to sleep on right next to his bed. His sister is in and out of here all the time, but his parents have not shown up or even called to see how he was doing. Julie said that they packed up all of his stuff and put it out in the garage as if he was dead or something. My mom has been giving me hell about going back to school, but I just tell her that I am not leaving until I can take Steven with me. I sit here by his side day in and day out reading books to him and talking to him waiting for him to wake up. I watch as the doctors come in and tell me there hasn't been any change, and that he should have been awake 2 days ago. They can't figure out why his is still in a coma.

I am sitting here reading a book that I have already read twice, and I hear some rustling over towards Stevens bed. I look up and see that he is moving almost as if he is restless. Then the most amazing thing happened. He opened his eyes and looked right at me. My heart was automatically in my throat, and I started crying right there from sheer happiness.

"Hey, what are you doing here? Where am I?" Steven asked, his voice very hoarse from the lack of water.

"You were in an accident, but everything is going to be okay now." I said moving towards the bed and putting Steven's hand in mine. I grabbed the water pitcher beside his bed and got him to drink some. Just as he was drinking, the doctor came in and looked very excited to see Steven awake. I moved aside and with tears in my eyes, I let them check him over, I was just releaved to see that he was okay.
