The workout went along fine and I was back to my locker. The combination of which was now set at 17.

I went straight to the coach.

"Coach, don't think me nuts, but I want one of the campus security officers present when I open my locker."

"What gives Dennis?"

"Did you hear about the package being found on my car the other day?"

"Seems to me I did hear something along those lines."

"Well, I made it a point to set my locker combination to '0' when I went to the floor. It is now sitting set at '17'. I want somebody there before I open my locker."

"You're afraid of what?"

"That another package has been planted. No matter if the stuff is real or not, the implication alone could hurt, so if we could maybe at least clear that section of the locker room, or wait until everybody is gone."

"And the implication wouldn't hurt just you in this case. Just who the hell have you pissed off so badly?"

"Coach, if I knew that this whole thing would probably be solved."

Coach called the security office and had a couple of officers sent over. We waited until all of the team had cleared the locker room and got the section for the team cordoned off for the time being.

I opened my locker and a tightly wrapped package fell out. I was glad to see that the officer who went to pick it up was wearing gloves. It was only the two officers the coach and I there, so there was no need to admonish folks to keep things to themselves.

"I'm thinking that you'll find that is something harmless, otherwise this is going to turn into something damned expensive for somebody."

"We got the results back on that first package Mr Sawyer. It was powdered milk."

"I thought it would be something like that. Doesn't mean that a future package won't be the real deal though. Did they by any chance recover any fingerprints?"

"They didn't report any."

"That would be too much to hope for I guess."

"We'll get this one to the locals as well Mr Sawyer. Don't hesitate to call us if this kind of thing happens again."

"You can count on it."

I finally went and got my shower, called Karl, and headed back to the apartment after checking the car over.

"You're extra late tonight lover."

"Had a bit of trouble."

"Now what?"

"I took a little precaution when I went for my workout. Set the combination on my lock to zero. When I got back it was on 17. I got Coach to call security over. There was another package inside."

"This is starting to get ridiculous. Nobody is going to believe anything that happens at this rate."

"It could be somebody just pissing with me for the aggravation value, but it doesn't feel like it. There are other ways than to keep planting phony packages."

"True enough Den, but you get nonchalant about these packages and they slip a real one in and then the damage is done."

"So I have to treat all of them as real. This is going to get to be a real pain. Let's eat."

After we ate and got things cleaned up, it was the hitting-the-books pretty much until we crashed for the night.

Sunday morning and we were up and out to campus, but not before checking the car. The guys were all waiting for us when we got there.

All the guys from the team were still jogging with us and they had all seen me hanging around after the practice yesterday.

"Ok Dennis, what gives?"

"With what Eddie?"

"With you hanging back in the locker room yesterday."

"Did you hear about what happened with the car the other day?"

"There was some talk yeah."

"Well, the same thing happened with my locker yesterday. These are the same tactics that were used against Karl and me a few years back in high school. So far we haven't been able to establish a link between that and anybody on campus."

"I vaguely remember that whole thing Den. So you think that somebody doing it to you again is working to show some kind of smoke-and-fire relationship and see you trashed?"

"That's as good a theory as any Eddie. The Dean of Men is aware of the situation as are the campus security and I'm sure the local cops by this time. Whoever is behind this has to see it isn't going to go anywhere pretty soon."

"Hope to hell you're right Den."

"Me too, now let's get this run in."

Our laps were done without any problems and once I checked the car over Karl and I were back to the apartment.

"So, what are we going to do today?"

"I don't know about you Karl, but I'm going to try to just relax before this whole thing drives me round the bend."

"I hear the words lover, but I'm not buying it."

"Said I was going to try, which doesn't necessarily mean I will succeed."

I turned on the TV and found a channel that was playing old movies that I could zone out to. I didn't even bother with lunch today so when I heard the gate open at 6, my stomach growled at me.

"Sounds like that time Karl."

"Yeah, it is."

We headed downstairs and helped get the table set. It was just general conversation tonight, which was fine by me. I didn't really want to be discussing my problems in front of the Castanzas.

Soon enough supper was over and we had helped clear the table. Karl and I were back upstairs and Cam and Paul had headed back to campus.

"So, you in any better frame of mind Den?"

"Not really. If I could just figure out the why then the who would probably be obvious."

"You're not convinced that it's either Hastings or Grandise?"

"I'll admit they are the most likely suspects at this time, but somebody could well be playing either one or both of them to get to me."

"I'm thinking that's a long shot."

"It probably is, but not completely out of the question."

It was TV for a couple of hours before we crashed for the night.

Monday morning and we were at it again. The laps were run and the car checked once again before Karl and I headed back to the apartment.

Then it was off to classes once again. English and Public speaking out of the way, I headed over to get my lunch and bench time.

Pete stopped by today.

"I hear things are getting crazy for you again."

"Yeah, just a little."

"Any idea who?"

"Ideas yes, proof none."

"Anything I can do to help?"

"I doubt it, Pete. I've got the Lawyers digging into people's pasts as well as my company's security, not to mention Bob Watson. There's no telling what resources Dean Evans might have in play."

"That's a lot of firepower looking at things. You should get some results soon I would think."

"I'm hoping so, Pete. I haven't seen you with Susan lately, you guys still together?"

"Yeah we are, our classes got scheduled differently this year. We all need to get together."

"I'll mention it to Karl and see what he thinks."

"Ok, later Den."

Shortly after that, I made my way over to the Logic class. It went easily today. I made my way to the car and checked it over but didn't find anything today.

I got back to the apartment without any trouble and checked to see what was out for supper and got it started. While that was cooking I went and checked my email. As usual, most of it was spam. There was one there from Jason Mouraue.

"Permits approved. Work begins Wednesday. No problems anticipated."

Some good news at least.

Karl showed up at his usual time.

"Anything happen today, Den?"

"Not as far as school, but I did get notice that the construction permits for the "Y" building came through."

"Well, some good news for a change. You have anything unusual to report?"

"Not a damn thing thank goodness."

"Pete stopped by at lunch today and wants us all to get together."

"I'm sure we can work something out."

We shortly sat down to supper and once things were cleaned up, hit the books for a couple of hours, and finally crashed out.

Tuesday and we were at it again. Laps were run, the car checked and Karl and I were back to the apartment and ready for the day. I waited until it was time to head to class and got a few things around the apartment taken care of.

Finally, it was into Creative Writing, and once that was taken care of over for my lunch once again.

Today, Bob Watson showed up again.

"Hey Den. Wish I had something solid to report to you today, but nothing I've turned up seems worth mentioning."

"Mention it anyway. Something that doesn't trip an alarm for you may very well mean something to me."

"Well, I really haven't found anything. Biggest skeleton I could find was that Grandise has a half-brother that he doesn't talk about much. Doesn't even use his name, just his initial D. C."
